Letter from the Principal
Dear Walker Parents and Students,
I am so fortunate to have been the principal of Walker
Intermediate School for the past four school years. I would like to
express my gratitude to the wonderful staff members, parents and
parent organizations that have worked with me to challenge our
Walker students to grow and learn. We worked together
successfully to move our children forward academically, socially
and physically.
I wish all the best for our children as they grow and learn. I will
think of you often, and will miss you very much. Thank you for
opening your arms and hearts, and letting me be a part of your
school community.
Most sincerely,
Jan Zevkovich, Principal (2008-2012)
Special thanks to Walker Assistant Principals, Mrs. Christine
Hudziak (2008-2011) and Mr. Jeff Libowitz (2011-2012) for their
service to Ms. Zevkovich, our Walker staff and students. Thank
you!

Walker Artists
The 5th
and 6th
Grade Walker Artists have answered Tinley Park’s
call to all artists and have created a Broadway Bench. The 39
Walker students received the bench March 1st and have been
working hard the last two months to create a bench that captures
the spirit of Broadway musicals. Broadway has always been a
magical place. Young performers aspire to be on the stage acting
out their favorite scene. This bench portrays those characters so
desperately wanted. The following students took part in this
astounding project; Madison Baird, Yolanda Botello, Paige
Candelaria, Kelsey Cappel, Kelly Collopy, Emma Dickenscheidt,
Franchesca Garcia, Jessica Giraldi, Penelope Janicki, Angela
Juskie, Mia LaMantia, Danya Mohamed, Sydney Nekola, Megan
Potaczek, Madeline Romero, Elyse Skolek, Grace Vavrik,
Courtney Williams, Bessie Zhang, Nicole Zralka, Grace Arnold,
Jack Cassidy, Veronica Cervantes, Evan Curatolo, Sarah
Dababneh, Madilyn Diaz, Ayana Esparza, Hannah Gray, Allison
Hefner, Julia Lederer, Amanda Logan, Matthew Fritsch, Lauren
Ostrowski, Carlie Parrish, Amanda Pohrte, Vanessa Soliz, Richard
Stiglic, Melaney Struttmann, Tara Tischer, and Tyler Win. Ms.
McCarthy is proud of their effort and can not wait to see the bench
on Oak Park Avenue.
Sixth Grade Reptile Assembly
On April 4, 2012, the sixth grade was treated to a lively assembly
presented by Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles. Thanks
to the Walker SCO, our Multi-Purpose Room was filled with witty
presenters showing us giant pythons, alligators, tarantulas, a giant
tortoise, lizards, etc. Mr. Di Naso discussed the natural habitats,
feeding habits, and many other aspects of each reptile’s life.
Children got to pet the snakes and one student even got to ride on
the giant tortoise!! It was an entertaining and informative
assembly that was enjoyed by all.

Veterans’ Day Ceremony
Mrs. Tucker and the Walker School Community would like to
announce that their annual Veterans Day Ceremony is tentatively
scheduled for Friday, November 9th
2012. Please remember
veterans, even though your child might be moving to the junior
high school you will always be welcomed at our ceremony. Just
keep the date in mind and drop us line or give us a call in October
to let us know that you would like to attend. We look forward to
welcoming back “old friends” and getting to know the new
veterans next year.
Hilda Walker News p4 HEALTH AND DENTAL REQUIREMENTS
For the 2012/13 school year, all students entering 6th
grade are
required to have a physical and be current on their immunizations.
This is to be completed before the first day of 6th
grade. This
physical can also be used to meet the sports physical requirement
if they choose to participate in intramural or sports activities.
6th
grade students are also required to have a dental examination.
This is due May 15, 2013. It is valid for any dental exam within
18 months before that date.
Students entering 5th
grade do not have any health or dental
requirements, BUT if they choose to try out or participate in sports
or intramurals, they will need a sports physical. The sports
physicals are good for 1 year, and will be required every year
through high school if your child participates in any sports or
intramural activities.
If any student requires medication at school, please have a
Medication Authorization Form completed by your doctor and
yourself. This is needed for any prescription, over the counter
medication, inhalers, etc.
All the required forms are available on the district website, under
the tab “For Parents and Students” and then under “Forms”.

Sixth Grade Field Trip
Sixth grade students will go on a field trip this year to the Big
Wolf Run Ranch on April 30th
-May 3rd
. The Ranch is a non-
profit, federally licensed, educational program which specializes
in education and conservation of North American
wildlife. Many of the animals at Big Run have been rescued
wherein the only other alternative was euthanasia. Although
they have rescued many animals, Big Run's primary objective is
education. Currently, they are unable to comfortably house any
additional wildlife. They are in the preliminary stages of
planning out a larger facility, where they will be able to provide
homes for orphaned wildlife. The plans include an on-site rehab
medical facility as well as an 1800 sq. ft. on-site education
center. With the continued generous support of the public, the
facility will expand as funds allow. Big Run offers outdoor
group presentations for children and adults of all ages. Big Run
also hosts family day/open house events. Frequent visitors to
Big Run include school groups, scouts, church organizations,
photography clubs and home school groups. Thank you to the
HWSCO for sponsoring this field trip.
For more information on the Ranch you can visit their website:

Safety Patrol
Although, Walker’s Safety Patrol was small, they were a faithful
group of students headed by Kevin Riofski and Dylan Wolcott.
The safety patrol will be meeting with 5th
graders during the
month of May collecting names of possible candidates for the
2012-2013 school year. There is no charge for being a safety
patrol member, but students must be willing to give of their time,
stay academically eligible, and follow guidelines. The safety patrol
meets on the 3rd
Thursday of the month and does various activities
through out the year. Being a member of the patrol will not
interfere with after school activities and you are not required to
change the way you travel home at the end of the day. In the past
the patrol has had hat and mitten drives, “goodie” collections to
send overseas to American serviceman, and have written letters
and cards for veterans. The departing patrol is challenging the new
patrol to have a fund raiser to raise money to purchase vests for
police dogs. If Walker students raise enough money and
permission is obtained the dog that is going to receive the vest will
be brought to Walker for a “Vesting” Ceremony. Mrs. Tucker is
looking forward to working with the new patrol members and
would like to thank the current patrol for all their faithful hours.
Good luck at the junior high school.

Hilda Walker Math Club Sponsors Illinois Math League
Contest
This year the Hilda Walker Math Club sponsored the Illinois Math
League math contests for Honors/Gifted math students in grades
five and six. The Math League has math contests for grades 4
through 8, high school students, and Algebra 1 students. Over 1
million students from the United States and Canada participate in
Math League contests each year. Every contest has questions from
different areas of mathematics. The goal is to encourage student
interest and confidence in mathematics through solving
worthwhile problems. Many students first develop an interest in
mathematics through problem-solving activities such as these
contests.
The 5th Grade Contest
The Math League fifth grade contest added interest and
excitement to our mathematics program. The contest took place
in April of this year. All of the questions covered basic 5th grade
topics, including: properties of addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division, time and calendar questions, shapes,
perimeter, money, basic ratio and percent, rounding numbers,
remainders, integers, and more. This contest challenged students
to show their understanding of basic principles through numerical
and word problems that encourage an open, flexible approach to
problem solving. This contest provided for intraschool
competition and certificates of merit for the top three high scoring
students. The top three high scoring students were: Alex
Witkowski, Andy Kim, and Josh Bonovich.
The 6th
Grade Contest
The 6th
grade contest was completed in February of this year. The
contest's questions covered material appropriate for sixth grade.
Questions may have covered: basic topics, plus exponents,
fractions, reciprocals, decimals, rates, ratios, percents, angle
measurement, perimeter, area, circumference, basic roots,
patterns, sequences, integers, triangles and right triangles, and
other topics. This contest encouraged a variety of problem-solving
skills and methods, to improve students' abilities and
understanding of mathematical connections, while having fun!
The top three high scoring students were: Tara Tischer, Catherine
Yuan, and Xavier Sevcik.

D.A.R.E.
Throughout this school year, our fifth grade classes participated in
the D.A.R.E. program with the Tinley Park Police Department.
Officer Adamski came once a week for eight weeks to work with
students on topics related to Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
Students learned of the dangers related to alcohol, tobacco, and
drugs. They also learned about peer pressure and appropriate
ways to respond in situations involving others. Ask your child
about the DARE method for making decisions: Define, Assess,
Respond, and Evaluate. Working through the decision making
process will help guide them in making good choices while being
respectful, responsible, and safe.
On Thursday, April 5th
, our fifth grade students concluded the
D.A.R.E. program with an informal graduation ceremony. All
students who completed the program received a certificate and t-
shirt. We also recognized the classroom winners who wrote
outstanding essays relating what they learned. Essay winners
pictured below are Abby Aguirre and Ricci Quinones.

Grade Field Trip
The fifth grade is going on a field trip to the Graue Mill. This is a
great opportunity for students to see first-hand how people lived in
the1800’s. The biggest machine in the mill is a water-powered
corn mill. The children will see how water powers all the wooden
mechanisms to grind corn or any grain. Students will also get a
glimpse of how women made cloth. There are many real tools,
clothes, toys, and furniture that will be used for to picture what life
was like for those people. The basement was used as an actual
hide-out for run-away slaves in the Underground Railroad! The
Graue Mill lets the children appreciate the ease of their electronic
lifestyle. Thank you to the HWSCO for sponsoring this field trip.

PE News
During the month of May students will complete the Fitnessgram
Tests. These tested were designed by the Cooper Institute to
provide parents and students with the best information on physical
health. This is not the only tool used to measure physical health,
but provides information on a person's health related physical
fitness.
Just a reminder, that the Hilda Walker PE Department is collecting
Box Tops for Education. The box tops given help to enhance the
physical education department at Hilda Walker. Thank you to those
families that have contributed.
Parents please help your student remember to complete their PE
homework. It is due every Tuesday in their homeroom's PE box.
Homework is worth 15% of their overall grade. Downloads to the
weekly homework are available on Mr. Acevedo's webpage
through the Hilda Walker School website.
Please help remind your students to bring gym shoes on their PE
days. The goal of the Walker PE program is to have maximum
participation every day.

Hilda Walker Garden Club Spring News
The Garden Club is back for the second session this year. We
are in need of used gym shoes. If you have gym shoes that you
no longer use, have grown out of, or are ready to throw out –
please donate them to our club. They will be recycled into
materials used on play grounds and athletic fields in the Will
County area. All pairs of shoes need to be rubber banded
together and dropped off in the box outside of Mrs. Pfeiffer’s
classroom, room 140 before May 8. Thank you for your help in
this recycling endeavor.
Also – Garden Club members are working steadfastly on
beautifying the walk way in the front of the building, making
bird feeders and plant holders using recycled cans, pinecones
and twigs, and are creating paper weights with rocks painted to
resemble our theme insect: the lady bug. We will be planting
native species for our butterfly garden near the Mary Drew
Garden at the rear entrance of the school.
Parent volunteers Mrs. Karen Stevens, Mrs. RexAnne Coad,
Mrs. Brenda Leppert and Mrs. Susan Pohrte are helping out
with the students for the second session. Also, we will earn our
fourth Earth Day Award at a ceremony at the Bi-Centennial
Park in Joliet on Wednesday, May 9. WAY TO GO GARDEN
CLUB! You really earned this field trip!
Mrs. Pfeiffer, Garden/Horticulture Club Sponsor
L to R: Tyler Kilmartin-Radtke, Nathan Miranda, Paige Doyle,
Mrs. Karen Stevens, Madelyn Schafer, Camille Vitiritti, AJ Pulido,
John Tijerina.
Butterfly Alert: When you begin to see Monarch butterflies on
the school property this month, remember that many of these
butterflies are sixth and seventh generation species whose parents
were released from our property in August and September two
years ago. It’s a marvel of nature to see them return!
If you have any questions about the Garden Club, please contact
Mrs. Pfeiffer.

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
(Keep Me In A Safe Seat – KISS)
Effective January 1, 2012, all passengers, regardless of age or location
in the vehicle, will be required to be secured in a seat belt or an
appropriately approved child restraint system.
The parent/legal guardian of a child under age 8 is responsible for
providing a child safety seat to anyone who transports his or her child.
Violators of the passenger restraint laws are subject to a $75 fine for a
first offense, and are eligible for court supervision if documented proof
from a child safety seat technician of a properly installed child restraint
system and completion of an instructional course on installation of said
restraint system is provided to the court. A subsequent violation is a
petty offense with a $200 fine and not eligible for court supervision.
Children with physical disabilities that prevent the use of standard
safety seats are exempt from the provisions of the Child Passenger
Protection Act if the disability is duly certified by a licensed physician.
Children must be secured as follows:
Infants: birth to at least 1 year and at least 20 pounds: Rear-facing
infant seat or convertible seat used rear-facing. Less than 1 year and
20-35 pounds: Rear-facing convertible seat – select one recommended
for heavier infants.
Never use in a front seat where an airbag is present;
Tightly install child seat in back seat, facing the rear;
Child seat should recline at approximately a 45 degree angle;
Harness straps/slots at or below shoulder level;
Harness straps snug on child; harness clip at armpit level;
Preschoolers/Toddlers: 1 to 4 years and at least 20 pounds up to
approximately 40 pounds: Convertible seat used forward-facing,
forward-facing only seat, or high-back booster with internal harness.
Tightly install child seat in rear seat, facing forward;
Harness straps/slots at or above shoulder level;
Harness straps snug on child; harness clip at armpit level;
Young Children: 4 to 8 years, approximately 40-80 pounds, and under
4 feet, 9 inches (57 inches) tall: Belt-positioning booster seat (no
back), or high-back, belt-positioning booster seat.
Belt-positioning booster seats are always used with a
vehicle’s lap and shoulder belts. Never use with lap-only
belts;
Booster seats should be used with adult lap and shoulder
belts in the back seat;
Belt should rest snugly across the chest, rests on shoulder;
belt should NEVER be placed under the arm or behind the
back;
Lap-belt should rest low across the lap/upper thigh area – not
across the stomach;
Children weighing more than 40 pounds may be transported
in the back seat of a motor vehicle while wearing only a lap
belt if the back seat is not equipped with a lap and shoulder
belt system.
Older Children: 8 to 15 years: properly adjusted safety belt in any
position in the vehicle.
Drivers age 16 or 17 must follow all passenger restraint
requirements for all passengers under age 19;
Child Passenger Safety Tips:
NEVER place a rear-facing safety seat in the front passenger
seat if the vehicle is equipped with a passenger airbag that
has not been shut off with a switch;
When installing a child safety seat, secure the seat tightly
with the vehicle safety belt or by the LATCH system.
Always read the vehicle owner’s manual.
Be sure your child is in the appropriate seat for his or her size.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for height and weight
guidelines;
All child safety seats must meet the Federal Motor Vehicle
Safety Standard 213, which governs performance standards for
child safety devices. Make sure the safety seat is clearly marked
“Meets FMVSS 213”;
To be notified of any recalls, register a child safety seat by
sending the registration card to the manufacturer;
NEVER hold a child on your lap while the vehicle is moving.
In a collision, the child is not protected from injury;
A pre-owned child safety seat should not be used unless you are
certain it has never been involved in a crash, has all the pieces
(including instructions), and has been checked for recalls;
Do not use a child safety seat that is more than six years old, or
one that has been involved in a crash;
Always use your safety belt. Parents who buckle up usually
buckle up their children.

A Good Idea…….
Since some students don’t take activity buses often, there is
sometimes confusion when they need to. To put your child at ease,
a good idea would be to go over the Activity Bus list with your
son/daughter ahead of time and decide which activity bus your
child should take and what stop is closest to your home. Put the
information on a note card and place it in a small, zipped area of
his/her backpack. This way he/she will always have the
information on hand. This would also work well for work and cell
numbers.
Hilda Walker News p9
Reminders…..
Buses:
In order to provide safe transportation for all of our students,
children must ride the same bus to and from school each day.
They will not be able to switch buses without written
permission from the school office. Permission will only be
granted for emergencies, which do not include babysitting
arrangements or going to a friend’s house. Students also need
to use their designated bus stop for boarding and drop off each
day.
Car riders:
Please remember that the building is not open for students until
8:00 am each day. Please do not drop off your child before this
time. Our primary concern is the safety of your child.
All student pick-ups are in the front of the building at the
main entrance only.
All drivers picking up students must enter the parking lot using
the east entrance that is nearest the baseball field. Please follow
the driveway along the outside of the parking lot. Vehicles are
to form a single file line stopping at the sidewalk in front of the
main entrance to the school. Your student(s) may not cross the
parking lot to get into a vehicle. All vehicles must exit the
parking lot using the west exit. Vehicles are not to drive across
the parking lot to use the east exit for departure (as it is
designated a one-way entrance during school hours). If a
driver needs to enter the building to pick up their student(s),
please park in the middle of the lot and walk towards the main
entrance. During pick-up times, students are not permitted to
cross the parking lot without an adult. Drivers picking up
students (or absent work from the office) are asked not to park
in the spaces adjacent to the sidewalks. Parking in these spaces
poses a danger for a collision during this time. If your student
is not outside when your vehicle is the lead one, the driver will
need to pull around and go back through the pick-up line of
cars.
Visitors:
For the safety of our students and staff, all visitors must sign in
at the main office. This includes before, during, and after
school hours. Please have a picture ID available when you
check in. We understand that you will periodically need to talk
with your child’s teacher. You are always welcome to do, but
we do ask that you arrange for a date and time in advance with
your child’s teacher. This will ensure that they are available to
talk with you when you arrive.
____________________________________
Summer is around the corner….
Cell Phone Use:
The use of cell phones at school is detrimental to the academic
climate because it takes valuable time away from instruction and
creates disciplinary problems. Students’ cell phones should be
turned off and NOT JUST SILENCED while inside the building
before, during, and after the school day. Cell phones must be
stored in backpacks and not in student possession during the
school day. Students who violate this policy will have the cell
phone confiscated and will receive disciplinary consequences.
Dress Code reminder….
With winter weather upon us, please remind your child (ren) of the
appearance code as stated in the handbook.
Students’ dress for school must be appropriate.
Pants with excessive shredding or holes are not
appropriate.
Skirts and shorts must be to the fingertips regardless
of additional leg wear underneath.
Necklines must be 3” from the collarbone area.
Pajama pants (blanket fleece and flannel pants included)
may only be worn on designated spirit days.
Outerwear, such as coats, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, hats
and other head coverings may not be worn during the
school day unless the student is directly entering or
