contents About Highly IllegalHighly Illegal aims to publish an online magazine, jam packed with quality stuff you just HAVE to find interesting. Highly Illegal aims for quality, not quantity. The magazine will often be short, but will be filled with loads of cool stuff. Just read on. There will be clothes, music, art, photography, concert info and much more, fly ing out o f the magazines pages. Highly Illegal just wants to be a central place for quality info, that you can find EVERYTHING you need without needed to go to different zines and different websites. Highly Illegal began as a school assignment, but has been developed into something that will hopefully become regular. Highly Illegal likes many things you do. Street stickers, paper warm out of the printer, sunny boys, beach hair, clean undies, loosing your house keys...then finding them, cookies and cream ice cream, cotteeʼs cordial, slouch jersey pants, saving japans dolphins, double beds, spelling mistakes, crispy m&mʼs and orange juice. Oh we love orange juice! Thereʼs not much more I can say about Highly Illegal. Just enjoy it. Feel free to comment on ISSUU about the zine. Have as much fun reading it as it was to compile. Peace.

We had been sitting in that alley for a while. We had already met a couple of interesting people, like Charles. ʻHey guys...look! Itʼs Charlesʼ. He had a cool mustache matching his orange hair. He gave a wave and walked over to us. ʻSo. Did you guys bring the couch with you?ʼ Charles asked. ʻNah we just found it. Waiting for you guys to start playingʼ. This would be an appropriate time to tell you we were sitting on a blue couch we found in the alley behind the Oxford Art Factory waiting for Yves Klein Blue to start. Charles plays the guitar for Yves. So we continued to sit and talk until it was time to head in. The show was amazing. Thereʼs actually no other way to put it. But it was what happened afterwards that was interesting. We befriended two kids roughly our own age. They continued to tell us how they were drunk. Anyway, after the show, frontman Michael Tomlinson comes out and greets some fans that were left behind. Everyone walks up to him and begins to talk to him. In saying that, the two guys were a couple of metres behind us yelling, ʻWASHINGTON! HEY GUYS ITʼS WASHINGTON!ʼThey continued to talk to her, fascinated by her in general. It took us a while to work out who Washington was. Actually, probably a couple of days. That night, we didnʼt know what was so special about her. We now do. The guys added lines like

Page 6: highlyillegal issue 2

ʻHey can we have your cigerette?ʼShe promptly denied them.ʻOkay, weʼll settle with a kissʼ they guys replied, moving in on her to peck each cheek. Washington just laughed and slowly walked off. These guys though, were absolutely captivated by her. And itʼs now easy to see why. Washingtonʼs CD, I Believe You Liar, is an absolute masterpiece. Every single song is a hit, with 1997, Underground, Rich Kids, Sunday Best and How to Tame Lions being stand out hits. There is absolutely nothing that I wouldnʼt listen to over and over. Washington has risen to fame through many popular television shows such as Spicks and Specks and Good News Week. She personally feels these shows help with the success of her album. One captivating performance is her cover of Radioheads Creep. It jut blows you away. Find it at the link below. She reduces fellow contestants of Spicks and Specks to tears. In general, Washington is just one cool person. Some see ʻcoolʼ as being wearing ʻcoolʼ clothes, ʻcoolʼ glasses and doing ʻcoolʼ things. Here is her response (thanks to The Vine). remember "Hey Arnold?"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b0X4agZqp0

W: I'm not going to pretend like I make cool music. I'm not fucking Tame Impala. I don't make cool tunes. I write songs that I like. It doesn't make them cool.

TV: There's thousands of people who would disagree with you, though.

W: Well yeah sure, but I never set out to make this band a fashion band or a lifestyle band or a scene band or anything like that. It's funny that people say I'm a hipster because I wear glasses. I wear glasses because I have a stigmatism, and my eyes are shaped like footballs and I can't wear contact lenses. That's why I wear glasses. I can't wear contacts. It's not like a fucking statement.

TV: You can't wear contacts?

W: No, because my eyes are shaped like footballs.

TV: So it will misshape your eyes if you wear contacts? Iʼm fascinated, because I wear contacts.

W:No, they don't fit because – I asked my optometrists and they were like "You can't wear contacts because your eyes are shaped like footballs." They're not like basketballs, which is kind of funny. I'm like Arnold; remember "Hey Arnold?" HIGHLY ILLEGAL

Pete Versus TobyExcerpt from their website. ʻWe are Pete Versus Toby, honest creative spiritual people. We take pride in our organic approach to life, our design and art is a reflection of ourselves. We are a cultural mash-up of psychedelic futuristic hippy lifestyles and our intention is to share this with the world.ʼ Pete Versus Toby is more than a clothing label. Their clothes define those who wear them. The clothes each have their own meaning. They put the meaning into clothes, something society seems to have missed these last few years/decades. There are now clothes, other than the nerdy phrase shirts, that mean something. The Dreaming design (left) is a standout design. ʻLife is given to us, just to do the right thing. I used textas for 6 hours drawing this on the inside of an Hellsong T. Thatʼs what probably made me draw “fuck religion” on the bottom left. Antoine was driving our car towards Alice Springs, we had just been in Tenant Creek, and all the lads there trusted me more than I knew. This was a monumental part of my personal life and I know it will be a positive step to bridge the black and white canyon.ʼ I guess it makes you think about what you wear. There is more to every design. These days people donʼt choose their clothes because of what it means, or how it makes them feel. They choose their clothes because of the way it looks. Now, I know that sounds hypercritical and obnoxious. But it has a level of depth. Yeah you look at a T and say ʻHey, that looks goodʼ. Thats what originally gets your attention. But you buy a T because of the way it makes you feel, and the way you perceive itʼs meaning. I know to some, that doesnʼt make sense, but heck, its the truth. Pete Versus Toby know what theyʼre doing. Their shirts can that level of depth to sustain those beliefs. It makes you feel something, every single time you put it on. HIGHLY ILLEGAL 8.

Little Red - The Metro Little Red - Friday 8th October 2010, The MetroThere is something infectious about Little Red. Their music weaves its way inside of you and makes you start dancing. You just canʼt stop. It will make your heart race and the hair on the back of your neck stand on its end. You canʼt escape their infectious tunes. They recently released an amazing second album Midnight Remember that is just as good, if not better, than their first album Listen To Little Red. Little Red are amazing live. You only need to check out some videos on youtube to see why. Here is a little excerpt from fasterlouder.com that truly outlines their live shows. ʻYouʼd expect new single Rock It to receive the most enthusiastic response. Well thatʼs exactly what the audience gave, and proceeded to dance their butts off with the cheesiest of grins on their faces. With a catchy melody and lyrics to go with, there was nothing but wall to wall hands in the air; even the staircase was covered as security frantically tried to move everyone along without disrupting the happy times.ʼ In saying that, Little Red are playing an all ages show at the Metro Theatre on George Street in the city. Itʼs only $35.10. Why not go!
