Yo-Yo Ma, cello

Rachmaninoff: Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini

Jon Kimura parker

Programming a season is always a joy and a struggle, but this season was well worth it. What a season! As usual, there is something for every taste, I promise! There are soloists of international caliber: Dame Evelyn Glennie, percussion, Jon Kimura Parker, piano, and the return of the simply amazing Time for Three. And I'd be crazy not to mention whom we're presenting in collaboration with the UT Tyler Cowan Center: Yo-Yo Ma!

As for repertoire, I'm looking forward to Beethoven's monumental 9th Symphony - the Choral Symphony, Bruckner's magisterial 7th, and a percussion concerto by American composer Jennifer Higdon. Our Veterans Day concert features both patriotic and contemplative music, inspired by or written during times of war.

The ETSO concludes its Brahms cycle this season, and you'll once again hear very new, very old and very "American" music. But I'm even more excited about the number of works that will be performed for the first time ever by the ETSO. These pieces are indicated in the brochure ̵ I invite you to count them for yourself!

Please order your subscription soon, so that you can get the best seats in the house for all concerts, including Yo-Yo Ma!

dameevelyn glennieConsidered the preeminent percussionist in the world, Dame Evelyn Glennie brings her prodigious talent to Tyler. She is the master of over 1,000 percussion instruments, usually playing at least 50 on every performance. Profoundly deaf, Dame Glennie feels the vibrations of her instruments through her entire body. She engages audiences through her immersive performances, often with sets, costumes, and lighting. For her Tyler appearance, Glennie performs the ETSO premiere of Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto. The concert concludes with Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 (also an ETSO premiere).

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this acclaimed and unique artist live in concert.

The ETSO season comes to a close with Beethoven’s monumental Symphony No. 9. The orchestra is joined by the ETSO Chorus, UT Tyler Concert Chorale and Patriot Singers, and a quartet of soloists for Beethoven's masterpiece, culminating in the towering Ode to Joy. Most musical scholars and critics still consider Beethoven's 9th Symphony to be one of the greatest symphonies ever written. The concert also features the ETSO premieres of Handel’s Zadok the Priest and Brahms’ Nänie.

It’s a grand evening of choral music ending the season on a high note.

The ETSO brings you more than the subscription series concerts performed at the Cowan Center. Each year, ETSO engages you in a variety of performances and educational offerings, community events and social media conversations designed to enrich the cultural lives of everyone in our community.

Diverse offerings at Liberty Hall in Downtown Tyler provide audiences a chance to experience a variety of concerts in a more intimate setting. Programs include the annual Jazz Spectacular, presented in collaboration with Tyler Junior College; entertaining family programming; chamber performances featuring ETSO musicians and much more.

Education is also a primary mission of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. The annual ETSO School Concerts reach fourth and fifth grade students throughout the East Texas region providing a unique music experience that is often a first for these children. In 2017-2018, ETSO continues as a partner orchestra with Carnegie Hall in their Link Up series. This year-long program includes classroom curriculum provided by the education experts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute. Preparation culminates in a participatory concert for the students. ETSO also encourages learning opportunities for patrons of all ages through pre-subscription series concert programs such as the Opening Notes lectures, community appearances by Music Director Richard Lee, and other unique offerings throughout the year.

eTSo and you

you make the difference

To realize the mission of the East Texas Symphony Orchestra, ETSO relies on financial support from the community. Ticket sales account for only a small percentage of the ETSO’s annual budget. Tax-deductible donations from businesses, foundations, and individuals – such as you – are needed to sustain and grow enriching performances and community engagements.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. Call the ETSO office at 903-526-3876 or visit ETSO.org. Gifts of any amount make a difference. Thank you.
