Guest judges listened to each student's presentation and prov ided scores. Of the 48 projects, 24 receiv ed a "Superior Rating" and 13 receiv ed an "Excellent" rating. Second graders brav ed the cold weather and muddy trails last week to learn howsyrup is made at Narrows Reserv e Sugar Camp. Shawnee students took this samefield trip earlier in the month. The culmination of these educational opportunities isthe "Pancakes in the Park" ev ent hosted by Greene County Parks & Trails, takingplace March 2 at Russ Nature Preserv e. Ev eryone is inv ited to enjoy hot pancakeswith real maple syrup made from trees at the Narrows. Click here for details.

Ms. Thomas’ third grade class is studying simple and complex machines. Studentslearned about engineering prototypes by building sev eral different v ersions of acatapult to see which design worked best.

Students in Ms. Dav is' class read the story "Mr. Whit's Camping Trip" and thenplanned their own trip. Using pictures from v arious resources, they listed the itemsthey would need to go camping and created a packing checklist. From the list,they determined what they already had and what needed to be purchased forthe trip. Once all the items were gathered and checked off, they set off on theirtrip! They set up "camp" with a tent and sleeping bags, and they built a "campfire"after gathering wood. After reading a spooky story, they roasted hot dogs andmade s'mores.

Miss George's second grade classhas been working on comparingand contrasting different v ersions ofthe same story from either differentauthors or different cultures. Lastweek they read multiple v ersions ofthe "Little Red Riding Hood" story.Board of Education Member CherylMarcus v isited their class to read anew v ersion of the story - a v ersionfrom the wolf's point of v iew.Students were then challenged tothink critically about differentcharacteristics between thecharacters, then they used a VennDiagram to show what theylearned.

Students in McKinley's second grade classes finished up swim lessons at the newXenia YMCA last week. They were taught water safety and how to assist othersneeding help in the water. They practiced kicking, bobbing up and down underthe water, and learned how to use a life jacket. The students were well informedand had a lot of fun in the process.

The students selected are positiv e role models and they display theShawnee pillars of being responsible, respectful, cooperativ e, and problem solv ers.The honored students get to make a special guest appearance on the ShawneeBuccaneer Video Announcements, where a personal biography of the student isread to the whole school from their teacher. Xenia High School basketball players v isited sev eral of Mrs. Lane's PE classes lastweek. The high school girls and guys demonstrated basketball skills, gav e studentsfeedback on dribbling techniques, and explained what it takes to play basketballat the next lev el. Tecumseh students heard from the high schoolers that hard work,dedication, positiv e attitudes, sportsmanship, eating healthy, and maintaininggood grades in the classroom are all part of being a student athlete

Xenia High School has been celebrating Black History Month: during the morningannouncements students share information about the accomplishments of AfricanAmericans such as Booker T. Washington and Etta James. Classroom doors weredecorated, too, celebrating Louis Armstrong, Rosa Parks, Michael Jackson, andmany other influential black women.

Students competed in the Midwest Ohio HOSARegional Competition and came away with awards.HOSA stands for Health Occupations Students ofAmerica.
