Questions Concerns from MembersIn an effort to help address any questions or concerns that some of our memberphysicians have we would like to start a new series where we answer yourquestions Why am I not on call more often PCN physician members have the opportunity to participate in the on-call service forPCN patients We now have over 64 physician members to share the 52 weeks ofon-call That means that each member will be on call less than once a year If a physician is not available when their turn comes up there is always the option ofswitching the week with another member or requesting coverage from anothermember To make this an ongoing series we would like to invite any PCN members toforward questions that you have to communicationhpcnca

pphysicians can consult providing information on diagnosis and treatment options forpatients with gastrointestinal issues The guidelines help the physician determine if the patientsrsquo issue is significantenough to warrant an urgent referral to a gastroenterologist or if it would be betterserved within the family doctorrsquos practice Dr Mark Swain head of Gastroenterology and Hepatology for Alberta HealthServicesrsquo Calgary Zone said the vast majority of those who were stuck waiting longtimes to see a specialist two years ago had non-urgent conditions like heartburnor chronic constipation which could be treated much sooner by a primary careprovider This program helps ensure patients ldquodonrsquot get lost in the systemrdquo he said ldquoWhat itrsquos doing is actually using the healthcare system more effectivelyrdquo said SwainldquoWhen patients come to the specialist itrsquos quite intimidating and people are quitenervous It actually just moves patients I think to an environment where theyrsquore inthe right environment with the care they needrdquo Itrsquos a system that saved patients like Hayley Clarke the stress of endlessly waiting fora specialistsrsquo appointment ldquoWhen you hear the words lsquoappointment with a specialistrsquo you know generally thatitrsquos going to be four to six months (and it) could be longerrdquo Clarke said ldquo(Myphysician) probably asked a lot better questions than I would have asked thespecialist I left the doctorrsquos office feeling great that my wait-time was done Thestress was gonerdquo Swain said access to gastrointestinal care has historically been a challenge bothlocally and nationally resulting in ldquounacceptably longrdquo wait-times ldquoThis partnership is really a true shared partnership that allows for strategic thinkingto address this issuerdquo he said ldquoThis success isnrsquot just a local success I think itrsquos asuccess that has to be spreadrdquo Hoffman said the province has a plan to expand it beyond Calgary She added thatAlberta Health has come up with an alternate payment plan to compensatephysicians for the amount of care they provide instead of just the number of

Questions Concerns from MembersIn an effort to help address any questions or concerns that some of our memberphysicians have we would like to start a new series where we answer yourquestions Why am I not on call more often PCN physician members have the opportunity to participate in the on-call service forPCN patients We now have over 64 physician members to share the 52 weeks ofon-call That means that each member will be on call less than once a year If a physician is not available when their turn comes up there is always the option ofswitching the week with another member or requesting coverage from anothermember To make this an ongoing series we would like to invite any PCN members toforward questions that you have to communicationhpcnca
