WHY INERTIA?
Aristotle postulated the connection between force and motion in 350 B.C. Galileo furthered theseviews some 2000 years later. Sir Isaac Newton formalized the concept in 1687. The first of thethree laws of motion is the Law of Inertia. The law of inertia states that a body, or mass in motionwill continue in that motion until an outside force acts upon it to cause a reaction. Likewise, anobject at rest will remain at rest without an external influential force.
Perspective is the key to inertia. Which force is being acted upon, and which is causing thereaction, the inertia of both bodies is changed by their contact with one another. Inertia Engineeringand Machine Works strives to be the force of change while reacting to industry needs. We trustthat our products will change and improve technology that will make positive impacts on theelectrical power distribution industry.

LineBOSS™
AIR-BREAK DISCONNECT SWITCHATTACHMENT SELECTION INFORMATION
The Inertia AmpRupter utilizes expulsion tube interrupter technologyto break current loads up to 900 amps at 27 kV. It is used for load-break, loop break, line charging and cable charging switchingoperations. The AmpRupter was tested to IEEE 1247-1998 IEEEStandard for Interrupting Switches for Alternating Current Rated Above1000 Volts. The mechanical life of the AmpRupter is 2,500operations. The electrical life of the AmpRupter is dependant on theamount of load interrupted.
AmpRupter load interruption occurs as the switch blade leaves the contact clip; making contact with the catcharm. At this point, current is shunted through the actuator arm, through the contacts to the load side. As theblade continues towards its open position, the internal spring powered mechanism trips; breaking the internalcontacts. This action evolves a pressurized non-conductive gas that extinguishes the arc. This process occurswithin one half cycle (first zero crossing), and will not “chop” the current upon circuit interruption. The speed ofthe AmpRupter mechanism is not dependent on the switch operating speed, insuring that the load breakingcapabilities are consistent regardless of switch opening speed. The AmpRupter automatically resets for thenext operation. The AmpRupter is not in the current path during the switch closing operation, and has no faultclosing capabilities. The AmpRupter is in the current path during the switch opening operation only.

V2 (2-gap vacuum Interrupter)V3 (3-gap vacuum Interrupter)
The V2 and V3 vacuum Interrupters are two-gap and three-gap load-breaking devices, that utilize vacuum bottle technology. V2 vacuuminterrupters, with two vacuum bottles in series, can break loads upto 2000 Amps at 48 kV. V3 vacuum interrupters, with three vacuumbottles in series, can break loads up to 2000 Amps at 69 kV. Vacuumbottle interrupters are not in the current path during the switch closingoperation, and have no fault closing capabilities. The mechanicaland electrical life of the V3, 3-Gap vacuum interrupter is 5000operations at full load.

The AmpVac is an enclosed vacuum bottle interrupter where nogases are vented to the atmosphere. The AmpVac interrupter hasmuch higher interruption capabilities than other load break devices.Single contact AmpVac interrupters break loads up to 1500 amps at35 kV. Single vacuum bottle interrupters may be used at increasedvoltages for parallel or loop switching applications as long as thepeak recovery voltage does not exceed 38 kV. The mechanical andelectrical life of the AmpVac is 5000 operations at full load. TheAmpRupter was tested to IEEE 1247-1998 .AmpVac™

ArcChute (Delrin “Clapper”)
The ArcChute Interrupter is a minimal load-breaking device thatutilizes air break technology. The arc is quenched as the two Delrinarc chute plates close and the arc whip breaks away establishingthe required metal-to-metal open gap. Arc Chute interrupters arewidely used for line charging and magnetizing current interrupting.Full loadbreak and parallel breaking currents up to 150 amps at21kV or 20 amps at 34.5kV are common applications. Arc Chuteinterrupters are only in the current path during the opening processand have an average life of 150 operations.
LineBOSS™ Selection Guide suffix “H”
The ArcWhip has a small interrupting rating of between 10 and 20amps. ArcWhips can clear arcs from residual energy stored incapacitor banks, transformers or conductors. ArcWhips are only inthe current path during switch opening operations, and have anaverage life of 150 open operations.
The Arc Horn is not an interrupter and has no ratings. It is used asan arc deflecting mechanism to save the life of switch blades andcontact clips. The ArcHorn, also known as “sacrificial arcing horn”,is the first point of contact during switch closing operations. Theinitial making current during a closing operation creates small arcs;pitting the arc horns. This “sacrificial” mechanism helps preventdegradation of the main contacts. The Arc Horn is used to redirectthe arc resulting from residual or stored charge left after a down-linecircuit is opened. Arc Horns will not prevent damage from theinadvertent opening of a loaded switch.
* Recovery voltage between source and load must be less than 38 kV, immediately.** Higher current rating available with use of a voltage limiter; Consult the factory for details.

Busbar gradecopper contactcomponents.
Busbar grade copper contact components are structurally superiorwith greater conductivity than cast contact material. Cast alumi-num and copper bronze contact castings are 34-36% conductiveand often contain unseen surface irregularities and voids that cre-ate ‘hot spots’. Busbar grade C110 copper is 99% conductive andis many times smoother to provide better terminal connection sur-faces and is not subject to unseen porosity. With this contact sys-tem, the LineBOSS has achieved the highest momentary and faultclose ratings in the industry. Momentary: to 70 kA for 10 cycles and44 kA for 3 seconds. Fault close: 30 kA (2X)
FEAFEAFEAFEAFEATURETURETURETURETURE BENEFITSBENEFITSBENEFITSBENEFITSBENEFITSMany manufacturers use 7 gauge (3/16”) steel bases that can flexduring normal operation, causing blade-to-clip misalignment. Some rotating insulator spindles and bearings are supported solelyon the 3/16” thick phase base surface. The spindle and its bearingshould be supported at both the phase base surface and the end ofthe spindle opposite the blade. A 1/4” thick base supporting therotating stack at two points assures a robust construction that main-tains the blade to contact alignment throughout the life of the switch. Some rotating insulator spindles are made of zinc chromate platedsteel which can rust. Others use cast aluminum which is inexpen-sive, but has poor wear characteristics and does not have thestrength of steel. Switches can come out of contact adjustment if aspindle bearing fails. The added benefit of stainless steel and brassensures a long reliable switch life.Bearings in the bellcrank reduce the force required to operate theswitch and eliminate corrosion due to plated metal-to-metal wear.

These insulators have superior mechanical characteristics over 2¼”BC insulators. Silicone insulators have additional BIL, leakage andweatherabilty ratings over either porcelain or epoxy insulators.
Often, switch manufacturers use cast clamps to connect the inter-phase rod to the rotating stacks. This clamping method has onefixed side and only one open side to pinch the interphase rod. Theinterphase rod clamp is the device that assures uniform operationof the three switch phases. Any slippage results in an improperlyadjusted switch, with not all phases fully closed into the contacts. The LineBOSS uses formed two-piece clamps to compress the in-terphase rod surface with significantly more distributed pressure. This helps to maintain uniform operation of all three phases through-out the life of the switch.

The Inertia hookstick operated switch eliminates the need for a control rod, sothere is no need for any field adjustment of the switch. Compression of theblades into the clips and interrupter timing are factory set. Without lower con-trols; pole clutter is reduced.
Hookstick operating mechanisms are available on Horizontal, Underarm hori-zontal, Riser, Vertical (phase over phase) and Delta (triangular) configurations.
The Inertia Hookstick safety features include:1.) Hookstick mechanism is located below the xarm, away from hot parts.2.) No springs that could be effected by ice.3.) The switch bellcrank has built-in toggle-over in both the open and closedpositions, which in conjunction to the lock-out bar feature, prevents inadvertent operation of the switch from either position by perching wildlife.4.) For night and inclement weather operation, the “hook” positions are high-lighted with a high visibility, yellow reflective surface.
The Inertia Hookstick bellcrank and rotating stacks have stainless steel-to-brassshaft bearings. Consider the savings in restrictive losses when the controlrods, guides and handle are no longer a factor! This makes the Inertia Hookstickoperated switch the easiest switch to operate. High leverage cam actionensures properly closed switch and reduced operating force.

46 kV & 69 kV Sidebreak Type,Gang Operated Air-break Switch
INERTIA Engineering and Machine Works, Inc.adapted the industry leading design features of its dis-tribution class G.O.A.B. switches, to produce an ex-tremely high quality and cost effective, unitized side-break style transmission switch.
The ease of installation that unitized distribution classswitches provide is now available for transmissionclass switches. The phase units are shipped as com-pletely factory assembled and adjusted units. Theactual configuration is delivered fully unitized or modu-larized for fast, simple and easy field installation.
The LineBOSS 46 kV-69 kV sidebreak switches are thelowest “cost to own” switches available today. Fullyunitized or modular switches are hung on the pole inhours, not days. These switches also provide loweroperating costs. Unbalanced conductor load or sea-sonal temperature changes can create line sag lead-ing to contact misalignment on other style switches. This maintenance headache is eliminated by theLineBOSS sidebreak switch. Custom phase bases areavailable for installation on a wide variety of structures.
STANDARD FEATURES
• Unitized or modular construction on aluminum or steelcrossarms for fast and easy installations
• Factory adjusted, ready to mount with minimal, if any, field assembly required
• Available with silicone (std.) or porcelain insulators• Reverse loop, silver plated copper jaw contacts• Maintenance-free, sealed, stainless steel ball bearings• Meets all applicable NEMA and ANSI standards• All ferrous components are hot dip galvanized• Tinned copper two-hole and four-hole terminal pads

AIR-BREAK DISCONNECT SWITCHATTACHMENT SELECTION INFORMATION
LineBOSS™ Selection Guide suffix “V”
3.30
The AmpVac is an enclosed vacuum bottle interrupter where no gasesare vented to the atmosphere. The AmpVac interrupter has muchhigher interruption capabilities than other load break devices. Singlecontact AmpVac interrupters break loads up to 1500 amps at 35 kV.Single vacuum bottle interrupters may be used at reduced voltagesfor parallel or loop switching applications as long as the peak recoveryvoltage does not exceed 38 kV. The mechanical and electrical life ofthe AmpVac is 5000 operations at full load. The AmpRupter wastested to IEEE 1247-1998 .AmpVac™
ArcWhip
LineBOSS™ Selection Guide suffix “Q”
ArcHorn (not an interrupter)
ArcChute (Delrin “Clapper”)
LineBOSS™ Selection Guide suffix “A”
The Arc Horn is not an interrupter and has no ratings. This “sacrificial” mechanism preventsdegradation of the main contacts. The Arc Horn is used to redirectthe arc resulting from residual or stored charge left in a line after adown-line circuit is opened. Arc Horns will not prevent damage fromthe inadvertent opening of a loaded switch.
The ArcWhip is similar to an Arc Horn, but unlike Arc Horns, theArcWhip has a small interrupting rating between 10 and 20 amps.ArcWhips can clear arcs from residual energy stored in capacitorbanks, transformers or conductors. ArcWhips are only in the currentpath during switch opening operations. They have an average life of150 open operations.
The ArcChute Interrupter is a minimal load-breaking device thatutilizes air break technology. The arc is quenched as the two Delrinarc chute plates close and the arc whip breaks away establishingthe required metal-to-metal open gap. Arc Chute interrupters arewidely used for line charging and magnetizing current interrupting.Full loadbreak and parallel breaking currents up to 150 amps at21 kV or 20 amps at 34.5kV are common applications. Arc Chuteinterrupters are only in the current path during the opening processand have an average life of 150 operations.

The V2 and V3 vacuum Interrupters are a two-gap and three-gapload-breaking devices, respectively that utilize vacuum bottletechnology. V2 vacuum interrupters with two vacuum bottles inseries can break loads up to 2000 Amps at 48 kV. V3 vacuuminterrupters with three vacuum bottles in series can break loadsup to 2000 Amps at 72.5 kV. Vacuum bottle interrupters are not inthe current path during the switch closing operation, and have nofault closing capabilities. The mechanical and electrical life of theV3, 3-Gap vacuum interrupter is 5000 operations at full load.

Busbar gradecopper contactcomponents.
Inertia uses busbar grade copper contact components as they arestructurally and electrically superior to cast contact materials. Castaluminum and copper bronze contact castings are 34-36% con-ductive and often contain unseen surface irregularities and voidsthat create ‘hot spots’. Busbar grade C110 copper is 99% conduc-tive and is many times smoother to provide better connection sur-faces and is not subject to porosity.Benefit: Reduced operating cost due to a cooler running switch.Longer service life with reduced energy loss.

ANSI TR2xx series,3” (46kV) & 5”(69kV)bolt circle stationpost insulators areprovided in siliconeor porcelain.
The LBS switches are offered with silicone or porcelain, three inch(3”) and five inch (5”) bolt circle station post insulators. Siliconeinsulators are standard, with porcelain available as a lower costalternate.Benefit: Silicone insulated switches are lighter and easier to installwith minimal chance of damage when uncrating and erecting.Porcelain insulators provide a lower cost option.
The rotating insulators pivot on double sealed stainless steel ballbearings at both the top and bottom of the phase base providingsmooth maintenance-free operation of the switch throughout its life.Benefit: Total operating cost of the switch is reduced as less sitevisits are required for maintenance.
Interlocking phasebase design withthrough-holemounting bolts.

Unitized/ModularSwitches
The LineBOSS™ 46 kV and 69 kV switches come from the factorywith each phase unit completely unitized and adjusted. When theswitch configuration calls for partial assembly, the LBS switch isbroken down into easily assembled modules. The locations of themodules are fixed, requiring very little, if any, adjustment.Benefit: Greatly reduced installed cost with minimal field assemblyand adjustment of the switch.
Sealed stainlesssteel ball bearingson rotating stacks
The LBS 46 kV and 69 kV phase units have an interlocking designthat securely clamps and locates each phase unit on the crossarm.Secure phase bases result in minimal movement over the life of theswitch. Adjustments to the switch are virtually eliminated. Thethrough-bolt fastening assures that user specified phase spacing ismet without additional field measurements or adjustments.Benefit: Reduced installed cost due to minimal assembly
Reduced maintenance cost through secure clamping
Stainless steel/brass bearings inthe bellcrank
Bearings in the bellcrank mechanism reduce the force required tooperate the switch and eliminate corrosion caused by plated metal-to-metal abrasion and wear.Benefit: The ease of operation reduces risk of injury to personneloperating the switch and also translates into greater switch life.
Unitized transmission switches install with the speed and ease of distributionswitches and provide years of maintenance-free operation.
Specify these features for the lowest installed, lowest operating cost switch.

LineBOSS™NBSNBS, 5 kV - 38 kV Non-InterruptingRegulator/Bypass, Overhead Switch
NBS, Single-pole unitized; shown in the Cut-in position.
re-wiring the buswork. The NBS-2D is not requiredon multi-step regulators.
The LineBOSS™ NBS, Nielsen Bypass Switch, wasoriginally designed in 1972 by Carl Nielsen, P.E. toallow non-interrupting bypassing and energizing (cut-in or cut-out) fixed booster transformers. The NBSswitch now provides continuous power to load-sidecustomers when energizing or de-energizing one, two,or three phase fixed booster, auto-booster andregulator transformers as required by voltageconditions or for routine maintenance or replacement.
The conventional combination bypass-disconnectswitch used for de-energizing multi-step regulators; firstrequires the regulator be placed in the neutral position. As the switch opens, a shorting bar is inserted acrossthe main line leads and the regulator series winding. If the regulator tap changing mechanism or the positionindicator has malfunctioned and the regulator is not inthe neutral position, attempting a by-pass operationcan result in excessively high circulating current in theseries winding which can damage or destroy the seriestap changer mechanism, the switchgear, bus work andendanger personnel.
The NBS bypass switch eliminates this safety hazardby controlling the series winding circulating current byuse of a current limiting resistor, while providinguninterrupted service to load side customers. Thetransfer series resistor assembly permits bypassingmulti-step regulators in the buck or boost position (referto application calculations).
TYPICAL APPLICATION:
Cut in a 762 kVA (7620 V, 100 A), single-phase regulatorto boost the voltage. The regulator indicates that it is inneutral, but it is actually at step one. The circulatingcurrent could be as high as 31 kA during the switchingoperation using a standard combination bypassdisconnect switch. The NBS switch, with its currentlimiting series resistor assembly, limits the circulatingcurrent to less than 24 A without interruption of service.
THE TWIN FEED NBS:
The NBS-2D is designed for use on fixed boosters andauto-boosters that are on circuits that have preferredand alternate source directions. The NBS-2D allowsthe booster or auto-booster to boost in the direction ofthe load when the alternate source is being utilized. The NBS-2D provides a switching method for re-routingthe source feed to the booster transformer without

BYPASS POSITION
1. The NBS bypass switch is shownhere in the Cut-out or bypassposition. The current path is indicatedby the dotted line. The regulator isout of the circuit. The actual switchposition is shown to the immediateleft, while the schematic shows theNBS in the top left of the schematic.
BRIDGING POSITION
2. The NBS bypass switch is shownhere in the bridging position. Noticethat the blade is in contact with thebridging contact before breakingcontact with the female clip. Theimpedance of the series winding andthe NBS current limiting resistorseliminate the high circulating currentin the series winding. The bridgedconnnection between bridgingcontact and the female clip insuresuninterrupted service.
INTERMEDIATE POSITION
3. The NBS bypass switch is shownhere in the intermediate position.Notice that the blade is in contactwith the bridging contact, only. Theimpedance of the NBS currentlimiting resistors solely eliminates thehigh circulating current in the serieswinding. These resistors are lab andfield proven to withstand 600 Ampsduring the transfer operation.
CUT-IN POSITION
4. The NBS bypass switch is shownhere with the regulator now inservice. The blade contacts thefemale clip while still on the bridgingcontact. This provides uninterruptedservice to the customer. Interruptionof voltage can cause magnecticcontactors in large motors to dropout, thus requiring restarts.

LineBOSS™ NBS Selection Guide
LineBOSS™ NBS Switch Application GuidelinesUsing a standard combination bypass disconnectswitch, the voltage differential across the series windingin the regulator is shorted out during the switchingsequence. This produces an extremely high circulatingcurrent when in the lower tap positions (not in neutral). The INERTIA NBS eliminates this high current by placingresistance in series with the regulator series winding. The maximum boost or buck voltage differential is limitedto 1200 volts (600 A rating x 2 ohms).
The maximum switching position for a given regulatorcan be determined by the calculations shown:
1. Determine the voltage change per step of theregulator or booster transformer:
Voltage change/step =Number of tap positions
(Line voltage) x (Max. boost or buck %)
2. Determine maximum boost or buck tap position:
Maximum tap position =Voltage change per tap
1200 volts
Example: Line voltage is 13,800 volts, 10% max. boostor buck with 16 positions boost or 16 positions buck.
= 86.25 voltage change per tap position
= 13.9 tap positions
= 43.1 A max. circulating current
Conclusion: The NBS will safely switch this 13,800 Vregulator at tap position 13. At step one, where thecirculating could be as high as 43,125 Amps based on0.002 ohms series winding impedance, the current ismitigated to 43.1 amps while switching.
13,800 V x 0.1016 tap positions
1,200 volts86.25 Volts/tap position
4.12
NOTE: Always attempt to return the regulator toneutral before switching. This device is not intendedto change the safety or standard operating practiceof switching regulators.
The NBS switch allows an added margin of safetywhen switching regulators. When neutral position cannot be definitely confirmed, the NBS will allow safeswitching in the “off-neutral” position as long as thedifferential voltage across the transformer serieswinding does not exceed 1200 V.
INERTIA’s NBS noninterrupting bypass switch, protectspersonnel and equipment, and eliminates the downtimeand other costs associated with taking an outage toswitch regulators, fixed or auto-booster transformers. It provides additional personnel and equipment safetyin line distribution and substation applications.
3. Determine maximum current at tap position 1:
Max. Circulating Current =NBS switched series resistance
Voltage change/step x # tap positions
86.25 Volts x 1 tap position2 ohms (NBS resistance)

The INERTIA MSO, motorized switchoperator, meets or exceeds ANSI cer-tification standards for substation, transmission and distribution Super-visory Control And Data Acquisition(SCADA). It works as a stand alone, locally controlled device, or it can befit with a wide variety of SCADA com-munication equipment including yourchoice of RTU, modem, radio, an-tenna, cabling, and analog insulatorswith current, voltage and fault sens-ing capabilities.
Two MSO models available:• MSOD- reciprocating output fordistribution switches 15 kV-35 kV• MSOT- reciprocating output fortransmission switches 46 kV-72.5 kV.
The INERTIA MSO is built with inter-changeable communication controlmodules for upgrading on the shopbench instead of in the field. A basicpushbutton operating device can beupgraded with a variety of SCADAsystems in the future. A new or modi-fied module, with your choice of re-mote control features, can be easilybench tested on an existing MSO se-ries and quickly apply the upgrade inthe field.
The INERTIA MSO gives the flexibil-ity needed for your changing remoteswitching requirements. Inertia’s in-terchangeable modules allow foreasy upgrades on the shop bench;not up on the pole.
Physical CharacteristicsThe INERTIA MSO is light enough tobe installed with any lifting equipmentcapable of 225 lbs. The nominal cabi-net measurements are 15 ½” W x19½” H x 23”D. Manual switch op-eration capability is provided on theback of the unit. No synchronizing isrequired after a manual operation asis the case with some equipment.

• Perpetual Position AlignmentThe patented clutch assembly inthe INERTIA MSO provides factoryadjusted output travel that neverneeds resetting in the field. Oncethe MSO has been installed andthe switch rod adjusted, the opera-tor never requires realignment.
• Modular ConstructionThe slide-in control modules areup-gradable and easily inter-changeable in the field. If the RTUor radio needs replacement, thebench work can be done in the shopand the control module exchangedin the field by the troubleman.
• Unitized ConstructionThe drive mechanism is isolatedfrom the main cabinet by a sealedbulkhead, providing isolation of themechanical drive components fromthe electronic components.
• Operating SpeedThese reciprocating units operate in0.5 to 0.7 seconds.
• Front panel/Local IntelligenceThe front panel of the MSO providesboth on-site and remote information, and prevents inadvertant contactwith the electrified components.
• Clearance Point SafetyThere are four clearance points:1.) The toggle switch is moved tothe local position to disable remotecontrol. 2.) the patented clutch sys-tem is decoupled disengaging themotor from the drive mechanism. 3.)the interlock pin is removed to breakthe circuit to the drive motor. 4.) theinterlock pin is placed through thedrive shaft and encompassed by acollar that secures the drive shaftwith the switch in either the open orclosed position. If all prior steps aredefeated, the switch position can-not change.
The inside panel isolates the user from the ener-gized components during a routine maintenancecheck and during normal local operation.
Power Supply Lamp indicates a functioningpower supply that charges the 24 VDC battery pack.
Low Battery Lockout Lamp illuminates when thevoltage monitor has detected a voltage too low toproperly operate the switch. If low voltage is de-tected, the battery successfully pass a deep drawdischarge test either locally, remotely, or automati-cally prior to operation. There is no override.
Battery Test/Reset Toggle Switch is a momen-tary switch that initiates a 5 second battery test. Thebattery voltage must be sufficient to allow a reset.
Door Sensor turns off lamps when the door isclosed and initiates an alarm status when open.
• Lamp Test Pushbutton energizes all lamps whendepressed to check for burned out lamps.
• Cycle Counter counts each closing cycle.
Interlock Pin lamp illuminates whenever theinterlock pin is removed from its control panellocation. The motor circuit cannot be energizedwhen the interlock pin lamp is illuminated (pin isremoved). This is the first clearance point step.
Decoupled Lamp illuminates whenever the motoris decoupled from the output linkage via thedecoupling handle. The second clearance pointstep.
Remote/Local Toggle Switch allows control tobe initiated from the control panel, only when in thelocal position; or remotely, only when in the remoteposition. This is a third clearance point step.
Open & Close Pushbuttons are covered toprevent inadvertent contact and are illuminated to

Decoupling Handle physically disengages themotor from the output mechanism. The motor can berun in the local mode by pressing either the open orclose pushbutton without operating the switch.
Interlock Pin: The interlock pin is the “Key” to theunit. It must be fully inserted into its position on thecontrol panel for the motor to operate. It is the samepin required for using the manual handle. In aclearance, it creates a physical stop/fourth clearancepoint step, if other clearance steps are breached.

Behind The Panel . . . . . . . . . . . . Modularity
Control Modules
The slide-in battery and control modules provide easy ac-cess for upgrades. Battery-pack changeouts are madequickly and easily by separating the power plug and remov-ing it. The INERTIA control module is custom tailored forthe customer’s requirements. No field wiring of the operator isrequired. The control modules are interchangeable, so if anupgrade is desired, a backup unit can be programmed andtested in the shop and sent out to the site for replacement. The replaced module can then be returned to the shop forbench testing. There is no need to troubleshoot the moduleon the pole. Since the modules are interchangeable, the op-erator never becomes obsolete. As your requirements change,an upgraded module with different capabilities can be insertedwith the same ease without the need to take a clearance.
5.12
MSO control modules are designed with “openarchitecture” and are adaptable to customerselected specifications for power input, SCADAstatus and control, and communication and faultsensing devices.
Substation applications:The control module can be a “hard-wired” unitwithout RTU or communicatiions device for sub-station applications.
Field applications:The control module can be supplied with factorymounted and wired RTU, communication deviceor both. When customer supplied, the factory willpredrill the control module frame to accept theform factor of the device(s) to be customer in-stalled. The RTU and/or communication device(s)can also be installed external to the MSO in fac-tory supplied weatherproof boxes or it can be sup-plied with an umbilical cord (instrumentation/con-trol cable) with customer specified connectors.
Control module input, control and status point information:
• External power requirement: 720 watts minimum• Supply voltage input: 120/240 VAC or 24-125 VDC• Control and drive power: 24 VDC• Auxiliary power: 12 VDC, 4.5 A• Control points* (24 VDC Form-A “wetted relays)• Status points** (24 VDC Form-A “wetted relays)
* Form-A “dry“ contact relays are available.** Status points can be grouped for “Condition Alarm” as requested.
The Inertia MSO’s mechanical and electro-mechanical drivecomponents are designed to last for decades. It is not likelythat any technological or material advances will improve thisdrive system. Battery, RTU and communications technolo-gies are very likely to change in the future. The removablebattery pack and control module systems allow easy up-grades without field wiring. Future upgrades of the RTU orcommunications device will be done in the shop on replace-ment modules. Pretested, pre-programmed modules canthen be hot-swapped in the field without taking a clearance.
Selection: Select the operator antenna connection and the control rod type.

Torque-limiting Shear Nut, 1/2-13
Shear Nut Construction Material Shear PointSize
1/2-13 304 Stainless steel 45-55 lbs1/2-13 Zinc, Die Cast 25-30 lbs
The above sizes are used for field connections to electrical equipment where specifictorque values are required to compress Belleville washers and ensure a good electricalconnection without the need for torque wrenches and the associated calibration of thattool. Other sizes, materials and torque-limits are available. Consult the factory for yourspecific needs.
Stainless steel shear-nuts make repeatable and reliable electricalconnections to electrical apparatus. Zinc, die cast shear nuts canbe used for lower torque requirements. Installing rod guides, stepsand other hardware to fiberglass poles or crossarms can damagethe fiberglass pole or crossarm when excessive torque is applied.Shear nuts mitigate this problem.
