ABB has all the experience necessary orsuccessul development o power transmissiontechnology. We introduced our rst innovationsover a hundred years ago. We see our greatestchallenge in maintaining our world-leadingposition in research and development o highvoltage technology.
This brochure concerns one o our truespecialty areas high voltage circuit breakers an area in which we are constantly striving toimprove product perormance that delivers realcustomer value. What has pushed developmentorward has been the capability to increaseavailability at our customers installations bysupplying reliable high voltage equipment. To
attain this, we have worked to simpliy ourproducts as much as possible. One way odoing this has been to reduce the number omoving parts in our circuit breakers. Simplicityentails reliability; ewer parts mean lower riskor ailures. The best example o this is ournew operating mechanism, Motor Drive. Thenumber o moving parts has been reduced to justone, while perormance and precision have beenimproved.
Tomorrows technology is based on todays experiences
Even i we are world-leading with todaystechnology, we are going to make tomorrowshigh voltage circuit breakers even better, toensure the best perormance, reliability and valueor our customers.

Todays ABB circuit breakers have been renedor decades through innovative development atABBs high voltage center in Ludvika, Sweden. When it comes to interrupting media, compressed
air and oil have been replaced by SF6 gas, whichwas introduced back in the 1960s. SF6 gassisolating and heat conducting properties have, among other things, enabled reduction in thetotal number o breaking units in comparison toair and oil circuit breakers. While a compressedair circuit breaker needed ten breaking units perphase or 400 kV, and an oil minimum circuitbreaker needed our, it is now enough with twobreaker units on an SF6 circuit breaker. Thismeans that operational reliability and availabilityhave increased at the same time as the circuitbreaker design has become more compactand hence requiring less installation space andmaterials.
Even when it comes to operating mechanisms, development has taken tremendous stepsorward. To reduce both ailure rates andmaintenance requirements, spring operatingmechanisms are used instead o compressedair or hydraulic technology on our SF6 circuitbreakers. The latest step in development isMotor Drive, a digitally controlled unit that canalready be supplied or our LTB circuit breakers.Motor Drive entails major improvements in
controlling circuit breakers opening and closingoperations, and in monitoring circuit breakerstatus.
Development is a team effort
Our development team consists o highlyqualied and experienced technicians with expertknowledge in, or example, plasma physics, materials physics, gas dynamics, mechanics andhigh voltage technology. We also collaboratewith others with expert knowledge and skills, both at ABB and externally. An important aspecto development work is our close dialog with
customers, which enables us to nd out abouttheir experiences. Customers who demand moreo our products give us the best platorms torealize new innovations.
The environment is becoming more
important
A large portion o development work ispresently guided by environmental aspects, andABB has a careully prepared environmentalpolicy or minimizing all negative eects onthe environment. Demands rom the worldat large and our customers or reducing the

The environmental approach is apparentthroughout the lie cycle o our circuit breakers rom the earliest design stages, through ourproduct development processes, all the way tobeing taken out o service or being replaced. Inour eorts to develop simple products, materialdemands are reduced and the materials used arerecyclable. Examples o this are our innovativewithdrawable and disconnecting circuit breakers. These provide opportunities or compactsubstation solutions that require less space, eweroundation elements and less amount o material.ABB supports programs or reducing the release

guidelines or the use o SF6.
New technology requires careful testing
ABBs high power lab in Ludvika, Sweden is oneo the worlds most modern and best equippedlabs or switchgear technology, with acilities ortesting circuit breakers with rated voltages o upto 800 kV and breaking currents o up to 80 kA.We constantly improve measurement methodsand equipment or meeting the demands o
tomorrow. The lab is accredited by SWEDAC andis a part o the collaborative organizations SATSand STL.
Also STRI, specialized in high voltage testing, issituated in Ludvika. These two labs can perormall standardized type tests or circuit breakers.

High voltage circuit breakers must complywith extremely high demands or operationalreliability to be able to contribute to sae powertransmission. To attain good operating economyand maximum availability, long intervals withoutmaintenance are required. For this reason, state-based maintenance is replacing periodic service toan ever-increasing degree.
The long-term objective is to develop entirely
maintenance-free solutions. Todays modern SF6
circuit breaker equipped with the latest generation
of spring operating mechanism entails a big step
towards that objective. The interval before mainte-
nance for these circuit breakers is about 15 years
and the failure rate is very low. With our newly
developed control unit Motor Drive, the failurerate will be further reduced.
Electrical energy instead of spring power
Motor Drive is a digitally controlled servomotorsystem that precisely controls circuit breakerscontact operations when opening and closing. Asopposed to a spring operated mechanism, wherethe requisite control energy is stored in springs,Motor Drive utilizes electrical energy stored incapacitors. The only moving part in the controlunit is the motors rotor.
Switchsync Controller increases power
quality
Switching transients, which or instance occurwhen switching capacitor banks, shunt reactors, power transormers and lines, degrade powerquality in the network. The transients candamage high voltage equipment and causedisturbances in, or example, substation control, protective systems, computers, processors andtelecommunications. To minimize these problems,ABBs circuit breakers can be equipped withthe Switchsync Controller. In this way, circuitbreaker contacts can be controlled so that they
open or close at the exact moment to give thelowest voltage transient levels.
Circuit breakers are key components in all
power networks
A complete range of circuit breakers
ABBs range o high voltage circuit breakers
consists o the LTB auto-puer and HPL puercircuit breakers. Together, they cover voltages upto 800 kV. In the present generations, the circuitbreakers have been supplied in more than 40,000units to installations all over the world. Both theLTB and HPL are well-suited or sae and reliableoperation in all kinds o climates, rom tropicalheat with extreme humidity to arctic cold. Withspecial gas mixtures, sae operation can beguaranteed to 55 C. As standard, the circuitbreakers are designed to withstand earthquakestresses, and can or extreme requirements be
supplied in specially adapted congurations.
Disconnecting and withdrawable circuit
breakers
As a complement to the basic versions o ourcircuit breakers, which are primarily designedor conventional substation solutions, there isa disconnecting circuit breaker congurationwith the disconnecting unction integratedinto the breaking chamber. A sae interlockingsystem, composite insulators and a motor-drivengrounding switch provide personal saety.
We have also developed modules with
withdrawable circuit breakers with thedisconnecting unction attained bythe circuit breaker being moved.
Both o these congurations replacethe conventional combination circuitbreaker and separate disconnectors.A complete bay o our modulesconsists o a steel ramework, busbar and disconnecting orwithdrawable circuit breaker. Thebay can be complemented with otherhigh voltage devices and is type-tested inits entirety.
Composite insulators
All ABB circuit breakers can be delivered withcomposite insulators. The composite insulatorshave superior perormance in comparison withporcelain. The Composite insulators increasesoverall saety with its non ragile and explosionproo designs. The leakage currents along theinsulator surace are suppressed by the hydro-phobic surace o the silicon sheds and therebythe risk o fashovers will be reduced.

Alongside renements o puer technologyduring the 1980s, ABBs well-known Auto-puer technology was developed. Thedierence with auto-puer technology, ascompared to conventional puer technology,is that at higher currents, the circuit breaker
utilizes the overpressure rom the arc orthe interruption process. At lower currents,an Auto-puer works in principle like aconventional puer circuit breaker.Auto-puer technology entails, among other
things, that lower mechanical energy is requiredor contact movement during the switchingprocess. This thereby reduces stress on thecircuit breaker, as well as on the ramework andoundation. Even wear on the circuit breaker isreduced while reliability increases.
LTB Auto-puffer utilizes arc energy in switching
For maximum operational reliability, the LTBcircuit breakers have either the BLK, FSA orBLG spring operating mechanisms, or the latestinnovation, Motor Drive.
The LTB is supplied or applications in voltageranges up to 800 kV or conventional substationlayouts with disconnectors. For substationsolutions without conventional disconnectors, disconnecting circuit breakers or withdrawablecircuit breakers are used. These three alternativesenable an optimal solution to be chosen, basedon specic demands or data, substation layoutand availability. The LTB can be delivered withporcelain or composite insulators.
The LTB has been installed or line, transormer,
reactor and capacitor switching in thousands osubstations.

In many users opinions, the HPL is the worldsbest SF6 puer circuit breaker and it has beeninstalled or line, transormer, reactor andcapacitor switching at installations all over theworld.
The puer chamber in the HPL has beencontinually rened since the technology was rstintroduced by ABB at the beginning o the 1970s.The HPL now provides unbeatable switchingperormance or all network data, and eectivelyswitches everything rom small inductive currentsto 80 kA short-circuit currents with a maximumbreak time o two cycles.
The HPL has recently been veried, by typetests, to handle 420 and 550 kV without grading
capacitors. The bennet is a reliable circuitbreaker with less components and less requiredmaintenance.
HPL a circuit breaker with unbeatable performance
The BLG spring operating mechanism has beenconstantly rened or more than 30 years andsignicantly contributes to the circuit breakershigh operational reliability and availability. Theminimal maintenance requirements with intervalso 15 years entail low maintenance costs, whichalso reduces total lie-cycle costs.
The HPL is supplied or applications involtage range 72.5 kV 800 kV or conventionalsubstation layouts with disconnectors. Forsubstation layouts without conventionaldisconnectors, there are disconnecting circuitbreakers and withdrawable circuit breakers. Thisenables an optimal solution to be chosen, basedon specic demands or data, substation layout
and availability. The HPL can be delivered with porcelain or
