College Credit Plus

What is College Credit Plus?

How does it benefit my student? Are there risks?

When can my student start taking college courses?

How do credits transfer to colleges & universities in state and out of state?

College Credit Plus

● New dual enrollment program 2015-2016

● Tuition and books paid by school district (if public IHE)

● Must first meet admission requirements of college/university

● Placement into college courses by exam (COMPASS or Accuplacer)

● Most students begin college courses in junior year

● Student is building college and high school transcripts

● College courses = weighted high school grades

● Fail or drop too late = F/WD on college and high school transcripts

● College courses at MECHS, online or on college campus


College Credit Plus

Cannot exceed 30 credit hours in one year Max Credit Hour Formula

#high school credits for the school year X 3 = A

30-A = max college credit hours in one school year

Example

7 high school year long courses X 3 = 21

30- 21 high school credits = 9 max college credit hours


College Credit Plus

● New - Students may take college courses in the summer.

● The summer courses count as the 1st semester of the new school year.

● Summer credits count toward the max credit hours.

● Students exceeding the max credit hours must pay for tuition and books.


Ready for college courses??

● College placement test - “college ready” scores

● English 1100 (reading 69+) - gateway course

● Test into specific math courses or complete Algebra 2

● Student characteristics: good time management, motivated, strong in subject area, independent

● Other considerations: school - life balance, maturity, interest, post-secondary goals, teacher recommendation

● Not ready? Take high school credit courses.

Scheduling

● Mid-February: students complete 4 year course planning document with Nucleus teachers. Share with parents.

● February 22-26: Individual appointments available with Mrs. Chapman & Mrs. McKinniss.

● February 29 - March 7: COMPASS Testing for those who wish to retest.

● March 14: Final student course requests due.

● Nucleus teachers enter students’ requests.

● Search by distance, majors, ACT/SAT scores, athletics, living arrangements, etc.
