The seniors on theChapin football squad feelas though they finally havereached dry land.

After wading throughthree coaches in three sea-sons, the Eagles expect togain ground in their second

    campaign under coach Jus-tin Gentry.

Its the first time wevehad the same playbook fortwo seasons, and I feel like

were in a much better statethan last year, senior wide-out Matthew Hite said.Last year, coach Gentry

wasnt able to spend the fullspring and summer withus, but this year it has beeneasier to get ready knowing

what to expect and know-ing that hes got our back.

Gentry said earning theplayers trust is crucial toimproving the teams re-sults.

This group of seniorsare fine leaders and prettygood football players, butits been hard for them withall the changes they havegone through, Gentrysaid. We spent a lot of lastseason working to gain that

trust, and by now there is a

sense of identity. And wevecreated a bond that makesthis season much differentthan the last.

Though they have con-sistency in the coachingstaff and with the system, the Eagles lost plenty of tal-ented players to gradua-tion. But several key play-ers return, including lead-ing tacklers Ryan Mooreand Devin Lawrence andoffensive lineman MasonZandi.

We lost a lot of weap-ons, Gentry said. Wevegot a lot coming back, buttheyre young. Our youth is

going to show early, butonce we get the game expe-rience, well be as good asanybody in our region.

Last season, the Eaglesstarted region play withthree losses. But they fin-ished tied for second in Re-

    gion 3-3A and wound up

with the No. 3 playoff seed;they lost in the first round. This year, Gentry is tryingto get the Eagles in positionto capitalize on a wide-open region.

There is no clear-cutNo. 1right now, and it couldbe us, he said. The Clin-ton game, thats going to bea key game for us, how werespond to that first regiongame.

Gentry said he has notspoken to the team aboutgoals, but the objective isclear to the players.

I dont strap on mycleats for any reason but to

go for the state champion-ship, Zandi said. I expectus to play our best every

week, and we are workinghard to put it together.

Coach Kemper Amickcould not ask for muchmore.

His 2011Columbia Cap-itals return firepowerfrom last seasons offense, plus stronger, faster line-men. They have confi-dence and consistencyand should be one of thetop teams in Region 3-2A.

Quarterback Ky Tyler, running back Justin Mull-er and wide receiver CaseyGladney are the corner-stones of an offense thataveraged 32 points per

game last season. The of-fensive front has changed, but for the better, Amickbelieves.

Senior William Harrismoved from guard to cen-

ter, and juniors James Works and Michael Har-riot are new on the line.

Were younger upfront, but bigger and prob-ably more athletic, Amicksaid. Because of that, this

year well be more spreadthan we have been on of-fense before.

Amick looks forward toseeing what Tyler, Muller

and Gladney can do. Thethree, who have beenstarting intermittentlysince 2008, worked hardin offseason conditioning,

    Amick said.

Anybody we play hasbeen impressed with thoseguys, and they have justgotten better, he said.

    Tyler is excited aboutthe possibilities.

We are so much moreathletic this season, Iknow well make moreplays, said Tyler, who al-so will see playing time atdefensive end.

The Capitals fell onetouchdown short of theUpper State final in 2010and finished 8-5.

Thinking about thatWoodruff game, the heart-breaker, and going out inthe third round (of theplayoffs), that makes us

want to do better, Glad-ney said.

But there is one thing Amick would add to his wish list: good health.Staying injury-free is keyfor the Capitals, who have

seen their postseason ef-forts mired by injuries toplaymakers.

    Everybody feels fresh

and ready to go, Amicksaid. Weve done OK inour scrimmages, and wefeel pretty good right

    now.

After losing five startersfrom its offensive line, Ir-mo will have a high hurdleto clear this season if it isto make another playoffrun.

Weve got some goodkids up there, said coachBob Hanna, whose teamaveraged more than 400yards of offense per gamelast season. They areyoung and they got someexperience last year, butthey are still learning.

But Hanna is confidentthat the offense, especiallythe running game, will re-main strong while twoquarterbacks vie for thestarting position.

Most importantly, hesaid, were not going todrop off at all in the run-ning back position. Theline may be a challenge atfirst, but I still think Mar-cus (Smith) will put up

some good numbers andkeep the running gamemoving.

Smith, a senior, madethree starts and notchedover 600 yards last seasonsubbing for injured starterDawan Scott. The latest ina long line of strong backsat Irmo, Scott neared the2,000-yard mark despitehis missed time. Smith isconfident he can sustainthat level of production.

Were really trying tomatch last year, and eventhough the line is new, Ijust keep motivating themand encouraging them,Smith said. They are get-ting stronger already, andthe better they get at their

job, the more I am going tobe able to do.

We are working hardin practice, and I think Illbe able to find room (torun) even if we have prob-lems early.

Hanna said the key forIrmo early is getting coverfrom an experienced de-fense.

Weve got to be theones that set the bar, notlet the other team score, sothat our offense can play with a cushion, seniorlinebacker Matt Dickertsaid. Weve just got to work that much harder, but its OK, because welldo whatever we need to doto help us win.

Though the YellowJackets are a fixture in thepostseason, defensive

lineman Kendrick Minessaid they are not takinganything for granted.

We like to win, and wehave that expectation, but we know that we canttake any team for grant-ed, he said. We are goingto have to be prepared forevery game.

The Yellow Jacketshave a tough early slatefollowing a competitivescrimmage schedule.

August is a difficultmonth with the teams were going to face, but weve just got to learnfrom our mistakes without

    dropping our heads,Hanna said.

    Irmo is not without mo-tivation.

Our goal is always tobe the best football teamin the state, Hanna said. Were a long way fromthat now, and I think thekids realize that. Thatswhy they are working sohard out here.

Dutch Fork could seethe mountaintop in its firstseason under coach TomKnotts. The next step isreaching it.

The Silver Foxes re-bounded from a 2-9 outingin 2009 to post a 10-3 rec-ord in 2010 that included atrip to the second round ofthe Class 4A Division Iplayoffs.

It was a difficult loss toByrnes; we really felt like we could compete withthem and win, saidKnotts, whose team fell to

the eventual state-champi-on Rebels in the postsea-son.

After that turnaround, the Silver Foxes offensetook some big hits. DutchFork lost dual-threat quar-terback Justin Suber, whoaccounted for 1,500 pass-ing yardsand nearly 1,000rushing yards. C.J. Can-non, a tight end/wide re-ceiver who provided op-tions in the passing game, also is gone.

Brandon Quattlebaumwas slated to start at run-ning back after topping1,200 yards rushing and

scoring 21 touchdownslast season. But he was in- jured in a preseason out-ing and might be out untilregion play begins.

Thats tough, becauseeverything was going torun through him, Knottssaid.

Instead, Dutch Fork is working with an offensewith a lot of potential, butit has a ways to go.

On the line, seniorChase Williams leads amostly new crew, andClayton Little and DerekOlinchuk are dueling forthe quarterback position.Little gained starting ex-perience last season whenSuber was out with inju-ries, but Olinchuk has hadstrong performances inscrimmages during camp.

Jordan Berry and ShaqPrice will be the primaryreceiving targets, andKnotts said he is lookingfor Chad Geter to becomea versatile tight end in themold of Cannon.

But the best news for theSilver Foxes is on defense, where the linebackingcrew and backfield remainsturdy. Top performers

Paul Bynoe, Jared Pryorand Brett Shore return. Our defense is basical-

ly intact, Knotts said. Imnot sure why it isnt click-ing yet, but maybe it willall come together on Fri-day (for the opener againstIrmo).

We had a great offsea-son, our summer workwas great, but we haventhad a great preseason onoffense or defense. Theencouraging thing is we

look good on paper. Wejust have to get it to be on

the field as good as it lookslike we should be onpaper.
