HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 2016-2017 As part of its 2016-17 Dream Big – Making a Difference initiative, the Foundation entered into a partnership with the Robotics Club at Lake Park High School. The goal of this partnership is to provide the financial support to grow the robotics program and support classroom STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts while fostering the lifelong skills of teamwork, leadership, communication, computer programming and more. To compete in a VEX Robotics Competition, students use VEX robotics components to design and build their robots. The VEX competition, operated by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation, has inspired students worldwide to pursue STEM- related education and career paths. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April. The VEX state-of-the art robotics system takes the inspiration from these competitions to nurture STEM education and creativity in the classroom. Lake Park has already seen the benefits of participation in this program. In its first year, the Lake Park Robotics Team took 2nd Place at the Nequa Valley Tournament and received the prestigious Judges Award at the Illinois State Tournament. Club membership has grown as has participation in Lake Park Technology and Engineering Classes. “I am honored to be a recipient of a Foundation

scholarship. Because of your support, I am the first in my family to attend college. While growing up in a less privileged family has presented certain financial challenges, it has also helped me realize the value of a college education. My educational pursuits would not have been possible without your generous support.”

“I am honored to have received a Foundation scholarship. I hope to one day give back to Lake Park through service and generosity. Again, I greatly appreciate the opportunity to receive this scholarship.”

“It is because of your scholarship that I am one step closer to fulfilling a dream. Your scholarship will relieve some of the financial pressure in going to college. I cannot wait to see where this journey will take me.”

Lake Park High School Educational Foundation // 2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION BOARD This year the Foundation

awarded 28 scholarships to help students pursuing their education after graduation from high

school. Since 2010 the Foundation has awarded 154

scholarships totaling $129,350. The number of scholarships offered this year was enhanced by a $7,500 grant from the Gene Haas Foundation that enabled the Foundation to award four $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors pursuing training on computer numerical control (CNC) machines to close the skills gap in U.S. manufacturing jobs. Funds from this grant will be used to offer scholarships again in 2017-18 and a new Alumni Scholarship will also be offered to students next year. Individuals can support the Foundation’s scholarship efforts by donating directly to one of five Foundation scholarships, or they can create an annual scholarship in honor or memory of a loved one. The Foundation will publicize, administer, and work with the donor to determine selection criteria. The benefit of the Foundation’s scholarship program may best be expressed by three recent scholarship recipients:

FUNDS FOR EXCELLENCE GRANTS INFORMATION

The Funds for Excellence program continues to be an important means to help teachers obtain support, materials, and equipment for innovative ideas and instructional approaches that are beyond the means of the regular school district budget. This year, the Foundation awarded teacher-developed grants to purchase 45 wrist-based heart-

rate monitors for classroom use by physical education students, to purchase speakers and amplifiers for the jazz band, to purchase television monitors for use in advanced mathematics classrooms, and to support student attendance in a leadership skill-development program sponsored by Rotary International. Since 2011, the Foundation has awarded over $80,500 in grants to directly aid teachers and students.

Physical Education students view progress in meeting their heart-rate target area and use feedback stored by their teacher to monitor cardio training progress. The heart-rate monitors and teacher iPads were purchased through a Foundation grant.

The Emergency Need and Support Fund provides assistance for school- related expenses to Lake Park students in financial need. The Fund also provides free breakfast and lunch coupons for students whose families are facing financial

challenges but do not qualify for the federal free/reduced lunch program.

By also assisting students in need with field trip, SAT prep class, and Advanced Placement exam costs, the Emergency Need and Support Fund exemplifies the Foundation goals of making a difference for students and helping them dream of doing things that would be financially difficult for them to achieve without support of the fund.

Recent thank you notes from three students and a parent illustrate the impact of the program:

“I greatly appreciate the Foundation for providing me with the opportunity to take the SAT prep class. I learned all the important strategies and techniques

and what to expect on the test. As a result, I felt more prepared to take the SAT…and my final score went up from the practice tests.”

“I want to thank the Lake Park Educational Foundation for providing AP test scholarships. By taking the AP tests I now have more opportunities for going forward with my college education. I was given an incredible opportunity to succeed.”

“Thank you so much for the opportunity to take the AP exams! I would not have been able to take them without your help. My scores on the AP exams will help me when I get to college because I will receive credit for some classes before I begin.”

“I want to thank the Foundation for helping my daughter take the SAT class. It was clearly obvious that it helped her. Her score was raised 160 points from when she took the practice SAT earlier in the year.”

Each year the Foundation recognizes students and a faculty and classified staff member for their excellence, leadership, and achievement in a Spirit of Excellence banquet program that also honors alumni who have gone on to achieve distinction in their careers. The senior students recognized at this annual program for demonstrating the Characteristics of the Ideal Lake Park Graduate were nominated for consideration by teachers, counselors, and parents. This year’s three distinguished alums, Sam Bettis, Director of Laboratory Operations at

Tempus, a medical technology company; Dr. Brian Kalish, Research and Clinical Fellow in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Harvard Medical School; and Dr. Joseph Sterbis, Program Director for the Urology Residency at Tripler Army Medical Center, spent the day with students reflecting on their high school years and sharing insights on what allowed them to achieve success in their lives. The Spirit of Excellence program continues to be a major community event showcasing the quality of the Lake Park educational experience both past and present.

Annual Golf OutingThe Foundation held its annual golf outing on June 19 at picturesque Bloomingdale Golf Club. Thirty-six golfers participated in this year’s outing

On December 9, 2016, the East Campus cafeteria was transformed into a magical place where parents and community members could sample from an elegant menu of winter tasting delights prepared by Lake Park culinary arts students. Prior to attending the drama production of “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” evening guests had an opportunity to participate in a silent auction that raised more than $5,580 to support various Foundation projects. Mark your calendars for this year’s Night of Fine Dining and Theatre on December 15, 2017. As part of the dinner package, guests will receive reserved seating to the winter play, “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Foundation Members and Volunteers Assist at the Northern Illinois Food Bank

In an effort to reach out to those in need and to provide community support, members of the Lake Park Educational Foundation and volunteers assisted at the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Through their efforts, they were able to pack 805 backpacks and 3,500 pounds of food which would provide 10,967 meals for needy northern Illinois families.

Members of the Foundation also participated in Lake Park’s Make A Difference Day by volunteering with Phil’s Friends, an organization that provides support and hope to those affected by cancer.
