We are almost at the end of Term 1. It just seems like yesterday that the school year began. Ten weeks of classwork has flown by. In that time, Stage 5 students have been working very hard in the classroom.

Stage 5 is a vitally important time as it can, to a large degree, determine the level of success a student is able to achieve in Years 11 and 12. Adopting effective work habits both in the classroom and at home in Years 9 and 10, assists students in achieving their goals in the senior years. All Stage 5 students need to be completing work in class and submitting assessment tasks by the due date. In addition to being a compulsory part of the assessment program, this will help them improve their understanding and level of knowledge. It also means that when they start Year 11, they do not have to start working in new ways as they are already organising their lifestyle around a pattern of home study. Remember that if your child is having difficulty in any class, there are a number of strategies they can use; They should talk to their teacher and ask for assistance. Teachers at Kanahooka High School are

happy to assist students who are having difficulty understanding the work.

They can attend the After School Tutorial Centre. This program runs every Tuesday and Wednesday in the School Library from 2.30 to 3.30pm. Staff from all faculties willingly give up their time to assist students in completing assessment tasks and homework. Staff can help students improve or consolidate the understanding of work completed in class.

YEAR 10 2016 ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE All Year 10 students have received a Year 10 Assessment Schedule for 2016. They were issued in a Year Meeting by Mr Walton, Mr Panecasio and Ms Toohey. This is a vital document as it outlines the assessment program for each Year 10 subject. It gives both students and their parents an indication of what tasks will be given and when students will be required to do them. Students will be able to list all the tasks and their due dates and put a plan in place to assist them in completing all tasks in an effective manner. This will help them avoid the last minute rush to complete a task. Taking the appropriate time and care when completing tasks, allows students to effectively demonstrate their understanding which in turn, enables them to achieve a greater level of success in their subjects. Please ask your child for this document if they have not already shown you. Mr P Kipp Relieving Stage 5 Deputy Principal

YOUNG WOMAN’S PROGRAM

Young Women's Program aims to support the establishment of friendships between young women from Kanahooka High School and Dapto High School. They aim to support young women to gain knowledge and skills regarding issues relevant to them; sexual health and contraception, healthy relationships, domestic violence, drugs and alcohol, job and career pathways, resume writing and job interview skills, mental health and body image. Message from the girls attending the program: "The Young Women's Program is a program we have attended every Wednesday for the past term. Carly and Steph run this program and have introduced us to many different organisations such as; Head space, Women's Health Centre and Uni Help Guide just to mention a few. Carly and Steph have helped us with a whole range of issues and concerns that we have had (oh and they are great cooks!). We have met other girls from Dapto High School and have become good friends with them. These girls have also helped us through a number of different situations. This program has been a great experience for all of us and we appreciate the opportunity. Thank you Carly and Steph :) Toni-Ann L, Jessica C, Caitlin B, Shannon M and Georgia W

STRONG GIRLS PROGRAM The Strong Girls Program is a program that allows young women to speak among their peers about issues they wish to discuss. The group is empowering and helps build confidence. The group offers support and kindness to its members. This term and Term 4, 2015 we have seen spectacular results among our girls and we’ve had fun. Strong Girls Program members

As many of you are aware, this year has seen the introduction of Sancho into Team HSIE.

Sancho is a Labrador puppy who is a Guide Dog in training. Ms Hoyn and her family are looking after Sancho for the year, raising and caring for him and getting him ready for his future Guide Dog training. Puppy Raising for Guide Dogs NSW involves toilet training, basic obedience training, grooming, feeding and socialisation. At 14 months of age Sancho will go back to Guide Dogs NSW and begin his training to become a Guide Dog. Not all pups make the graduation stage, but if this is the case, Sancho will then be trained to become an Assistance Dog, which are allocated to people across NSW with special needs. The staff and students at KHS have accepted Sancho into the school with open arms and smiles, and he is currently contributing to an enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere in Ms Hoyn’s language classes. MUSIC

On Tuesday 22 March, as part of my Music Technical Production TVET course, where I learn how to record, produce and mix music, as well as how to set up for live music events, I invited Bethany B of Year 8 to come into our recording studio at the Illawarra iTec. We got to record 5 songs to create a CD of our own. The songs we recorded were “Good Riddance” by Green Day, “Riptide” by Vance Joy, “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5 (Boyce Avenue Version), “Stitches” by Shawn Mendes, and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” also by Green Day. I played the acoustic guitar and Bethany sang. When we had finished recording our songs, we still had around 40 minutes left , so we decided to re-record any songs that needed fixing. Three of the other boys decided they would sneak into the back of the studio and “sing” as backups to “improve” our performance. It ended up sounding really bad, but it was a lot of fun and we now have “bonus” tracks for our CD. Being able to have the experience to record our own CD through the iTec was a really rewarding and fun experience. In a few weeks when the final mix has been created, we will have our own CD’s to share with our families and friends. We hope to go back and record a few more songs throughout the year. This week 20 students attended the Defence Force recruiting talk at Kanahooka High School. Warrant Officer Class 2 David Rose, gave an excellent talk, explaining options for employment, pathways to ADFA, Gap Year program and that a career in the ADF is very achievable for many of our students. He answered questions about the selection process and how to improve your chances of success. One tip he gave, was that students in Year 11 or 12 considering training with ADFA, should be starting their applications now, as the process has many steps. David stressed the importance of science and maths for many pathways in the ADF. The Defence Force also has an excellent Work Experience Program with our closest program offered in Nowra. If your child is interested in the Work Experience Program at Nowra, parents and carers are encouraged to phone Ms Phelan to discuss transport options. Ms A Phelan Careers Adviser
