High School Biology EOCPlanning and Updates
December 4, 2012
Welcome- Networking and Coffee Door Prizes Contest Entry Task
Goals
• Teachers will learn strategies to prepare students for the Biology EOC so that all students have the opportunity to be successful.
• Teachers will understand the history and direction of high stakes assessments in science.
• Teachers will identify ALL resources that are available to support Biology EOC prep through assessment, instruction and curriculum.
• Teams of teachers will begin to prepare tools to use in the classroom, which will provide students with multiple opportunities to practice.
• Teachers will identify the strengths and limitations of existing data tools that can provide information about student learning.
Exploring Item Specs
Review the cards Align the cards with the EOC released
items. Predict student performance on each
item. What opportunities did students have
to practice this in class?

EALRs 1-3Crosscutting Concepts and Abilities
EALR 4 Domains of Science
EALR 1 Systems Physical Science
…is a way of thinking that makes it possible to analyze and understand complex phenomena.
Force and MotionMatter: Properties and ChangeEnergy: Transfer, Transformation and Conservation
EALR 2 Inquiry Earth and Space Science
…is a process of asking and answering questions about the natural world that forms the bedrock of science.
Earth and SpaceEarth Systems, Structures and ProcessesEarth History
EALR 3 Application Life Science
…is about the interaction between science and technology, and how both can help solve real-world problems.

Big Ideas in Science Standards
Systems Inquiry Application• Diagram of a system and
some text about a specific system.
• May include systematic observations, models, or open-ended explorations of a system.
• Documentation of the steps of a controlled experiment or field study.
• Data table with the results.
• Documentation of the use of the technological design process to solve a problem.
• Table with test results.
Types of Scenarios
• Scenarios provide context for sets of items.– Biology EOC Life Science
• The items associated with a scenario cover a range of standards & range of cognitive complexity.
• Items not connected to a scenario are called “Stand Alone” items.
