Kia ora koutou,
As the end of the second term draws near, we are provided with an ideal opportunity to reflect upon the last three months. It would be accurate to say that what we have experienced as a community is totally unprecedented
in the modern era. An abrupt end to term 1 introduced many of our students to near total physical isolation and their first experience of remote learning. For many of our students, this experience was far from ideal.
Despite these challenges, many of our students found new ways to interact and connect with each other, either by Zoom, Google Meet, or even the once forgotten trusty landline phone. This “new normal” provided opportunities for our students to showcase their strengths in new and creative ways. Hearing and seeing the various endeavours of our students made me proud to be part of such an amazing community. Listening to the amazing vocal talents of students like Beka Clark, or the outstanding musical ability of students like Lucy Barge and Isa Creba, who perform in the Lucky Chops Band, was truly inspiring to experience. Seeing our English students recreate their favourite TV, Movie, or Comic book characters, using only their household belongings, highlighted the creativity that exists within our community.
It is also important that we recognise the hundreds of students who worked tirelessly on their learning during the weeks we were in lockdown; they showed incredible determination to succeed.
Determination is a value often overlooked in the world. It is, however, the most common trait of successful people. The world is full of dreamers, but too many lack the drive to turn their dreams into reality. It is important that we recognise and mihi this characteristic in our learners by acknowledging their perseverance and desire to succeed.
Term 3, and a new semester, brings a whole new set of challenges. As NCEA exams approach, our senior students will need to find a renewed focus and push themselves to succeed once again. As our junior students settle into their new courses they will experience new opportunities to thrive. To be successful they will need to commit themselves to their studies and strive to achieve their full potential.

DAY ONE COACHINGHopefully you have all been able to book a time with your child's Group teacher on the 20th of July. The first day interviews are a perfect opportunity for families to meet with the appropriate staff and discuss each students individual goals and plans for the coming term. It is also a chance to catch up with the results in the current report going out at the end of this term. Term 3 will be a critical period for students to consolidate their efforts from the interruptions of the first semester and to ensure that the correct subjects and learning streams are being taken to be ready for 2021. If you have not already made a time, please contact your child's group teacher before the end of term.
HI VIZ VESTS Just a reminder that from the start of Term 3, all secondary school students who use the country bus service will be required to wear a Hi Viz vest, this is compulsory. It was deemed a Health and Safety issue.
It will be a standard rule to apply to everyone. If a student chooses not to wear the vest, then they ran the risk of not getting ‘picked up’. The school has purchased a variety of sizes in the vests and students will be asked to collect one from the front office before the end of term. When they cease to use the bus they are to return the vest to the front office.
TERM 3
On the 11th of June, our class OED went to Mt Nimrod. We had to be in school by 8.30am for our gear check. We departed school at 9am and the journey estimated around 50 minutes. When we arrived at our destination, we hopped off the bus and got put into 2 groups. We were given maps, compass, and directions on which tracks we were going on. So then the two groups split and began walking from point A to point B, which were both different tracks. Our tracking started off easy but the more we walked uphill, the more difficult it
became as most of us were not prepared physically. At the end it was all worth it since we got to see beautiful landscapes, streams where the water runs gentle, the air so pure, we also had lunch and took some scenery photos. Once we accomplished our mission, we all returned to our starting point, it was much easier going down hill. Then we reached the car park, waited for the other group to join us. As soon as they arrived we learned how to make a small fire, packed our gear, checked if everyone was there and headed back to school.

Encounters at the end of the world (Encount) moduleEncounters at the end of the world (Encount) moduleThe Encounters at the end of the world (Encount) module visited the International Antarctic Centre in Christchurch on Tuesday 23 June. The students experienced the snow room where the temperature got down to a chilly -23C, viewed penguins, and saw a short film in the 4D theatre where they experienced wind and mist in their faces as well as being wobbled in their seats. The trip was a chance for the students to reinforce the learning that has been happening this semester.
On the 23rd of June our "Encounters" class travelled to Christchurch on a trip to explore the International Antarctic Centre. First we experienced the 4D theatre, we put on special glasses and sat down on comfy chairs to enjoy the movie. The chairs rocked, our hearts jumped, we were covered in fake snow and surrounded by bubbles. Some of us were even sprayed with water. Sometimes it looked like we were actually in Antarctica and going to get hit by ice or squashed by seals. I couldn't stop giggling and Miss Campbell screamed.
After that we looked at displays and I completed a worksheet on Antarctic whales. Then it was time to wrap up warm for the cold room. The temperature dropped to -18 degrees but the wind chill was much colder. We learnt about the specific clothing Antarctic explorers have to wear. We also learnt about the different types of penguin and their lifestyles, we even got to see the penguin rescue enclosure and saw how their water was filtered.
Before we drove back to Timaru we watched a video on climate change and were encouraged to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to protect our precious planet. It was a great experience and enjoyed by all.
Annabel Barge
Some of the water around Antarctica is below -2C but is not ice - how is this so? When salt is added to water it lowers the freezing point making it colder. The Encount module got to experience this first hand this week when they made ice cream. The ingredients of cream milk and sugar were placed in a plastic bag and then sealed.
This bag was then placed in a bag which had ice and salt. The students sealed the bag and then shook the bag until the ingredients froze. They then made an ice cream sundae with a choice of toppings.
Jayne McNaught
Enjoying their ice cream are Joe Cao, Daniel Chernetski, and Kawend Kuang
For each group of 4:

Step 9. Now - shake, shake, shake. When your arms get tired, pass to the next person in your group. (It will take at least 5 mins of non-stop shaking)
Step 10. Give the bag a squeeze and check to see that it has changed into ice-cream. If not...keep shaking!
Step 11. Eat and enjoy.

On Tuesday 16th June, the Year 12 Geography class along with Mr and Mrs Barge and Mr Kuperus drove to Mount Cook as part of our study of the South Island High Country.
At Mount Cook we were given a talk about glaciation from DOC before heading out for a walk to the Tasman Glacier. We were able to see many of the glaciation features that we had been studying about in class. After lunch, we then walked part way up the Hooker Track before making our way back to Timaru.
It was a stunningly beautiful day, and everyone enjoyed it - especially the ice creams on the way back at Tekapo!
