4.0 Arboricultural Implications Assessment Drawing THL-0199

5.0 Appendix B Tree Protection Barrier. 1. Introduction

1.1. I have been asked to look at the arboricultural impact of a revised layout for the Junior Course within the High Ropes Project the subject of NMA application Ref. NMA/015/30007.

1.2. The proposal is to extend the aerial rope course in order to include a “Zip-Wire” finish and other small changes proposed.

1.3. The courses will be based on poles with the ropes passing through the trees. None of the wires are actually fastened to the trees.

1.4. This report looks at any additional impact this will have on the woodland and

the trees within it. 2. Limitations of the report

2.1. The contents of this report relate to information gathered on the site survey on 1st August 2014 and our subsequent site visit on 20th April 2015.

2.2. This report should be read in conjunction with the original report ref. THR14-114 dated 21st November 2014.

2.3. This report deals solely with the issues that arise from the construction of the project and the protection of the trees during this process. In this respect the advice is based on BS 5837:2012.

2.4. The report does not include any discussion or reference to the safety aspects

of building rope courses within groups of trees. These issues should be dealt with by the company that constructs the course who should take advice from their own consultants.

3. Arboricultural Implications of the Revised Proposal

3.1. The revised scheme does not require any additional trees to be removed as the course has been specifically designed to fit within the existing trees.

3.2. The revised positions of the supporting poles have been selected to avoid the RPAs of the trees as much as possible.

3.3. Where it has been necessary to put a pole within a RPA then the excavation should be carefully hand dug to avoid damage to tree roots. The backfill will be crushed stone rather than concrete.

3.4. There will be some tree pruning required both to construct the course and

later to maintain a sensible distance from the tree canopies. This pruning will be kept to a minimum and will not be noticeable from outside the attraction.

4. Protection of the retained trees

4.1. It is essential to protect the retained trees during the proposed construction work from damage to the roots as well as the upper parts of the trees such as the branches and stems.

4.2. It is suggested that areas of the woodland that are not required for the project are clearly fenced off to prevent encroachment.

4.3. The fencing should be erected according to the drawing shown in BS

5837:2012 and included at the end of this report as Appendix B.

4.4. The construction of all footpaths along the route of the ropeway should be constructed using a “No-Dig” technique. This would involve minimal clearing of surface vegetation by hand and laying down a geotextile membrane. The path is then topped with either woodchip or bark and edged with timber saved from the trees removed earlier for safety reasons.

5 Conclusions

The proposed changes to the course will have no additional implications for the woodland, or individual trees within it, to the previously submitted scheme.
