Alphabet said on Thursday itsExecutive Chairman EricSchmidt will step down inJanuary, ending a 17-year-runin which he played a centralrole in building a promisingstartup called Google into aglobal technology powerhouse.

He will continue to serve onthe Alphabet’s board of direc-tors and act as an adviser onfocused on technical and sci-ence issues, the company said.“The time is right in Alphabet’sevolution for this transition,”Schmidt said in a statement.

“I’m incredibly excitedabout the progress our compa-nies are making and about thestrong leaders who are drivingthat innovation,” said ChiefExecutive Larry Page.

Schmidt, who was recruitedto the company by Google co-founders Page and Sergey Brin,served as chief executive from2001 through 2011, acting aswhat the three jokingly referredto as the “adult supervision.”

Schmidt then became exec-utive chairman, often travelingthe world touting the compa-ny’s accomplishments, negoti-ating with governments on reg-ulatory matters and speakingabout the state of the techindustry.

“He helped them matureinto the powerhouse business itis today without throwing awaythe uniqueness that was Googleduring those early days,” saidJoe Beda, chief technology offi-cer of Seattle start-up Heptioand a Google employee from2004 through 2014.

Among Schmidt’s accom-plishments were taking thecompany public in 2004, shep-herding critical product initia-tives like the Android mobileoperating system, and oversee-ing a massive 2015 corporate

restructuring in which Googlebecame a business unit of theholding company Alphabet.

Bismarck Lepe, CEO of SanFrancisco start-up Wizelineand a Google employee from2003 until 2007, said Page andBrin focused on the company’stechnology and the productstrategies, while Schmidtfocused on how to scale everyproduct to a global level.Schmidt “was incredibly smartand incredibly technical, whichmade him a perfect fit,” Lepeadded. Schmidt’s tenure wasnot without its problems.Google, Apple and several oth-ers were hit with a class actionlawsuit in 2011 alleging thatexecutives, including Schmidtand the late Apple CEO SteveJobs conspired to keep wagesdown by not hiring one anoth-ers’ employees. The suit wassettled for $415 million in 2015.

The company has also beenhit with lawsuits alleging that itpays women less than men. Italso faces a series of antitrustactions in Europe, thoughSchmidt was instrumental inconvincing the US FederalTrade Commission not to pur-sue antitrust actions in the US.

Schmidt spent more than adecade at Sun Microsystemsand ran the now-defunct net-working company Novellbefore joining Google in 2001.

The 2004 initial publicoffering (IPO) came at time theindustry was still reeling fromthe dot-com bust, but it helpedlay the groundwork for the cur-rent boom.

It capped a brutal weekthat had been touted as a newera of mainstream trading forthe volatile digital currencywhen bitcoin futuresdebuted on CME Group, theworld’s largest derivativesmarket on Sunday.

Friday’s steep fall bledinto the US stock market,where shares of companiesthat have recently lashedtheir fortunes to bitcoin orblockchain — its underlyingtechnology — took a hardknock in early trading.

The biggest and best-known cryptocurrency hadseen a staggering twentyfoldincrease since the start of theyear, climbing from less than$1,000 to as high as $19,666on the Luxembourg-basedBitstamp exchange onSunday and to over $20,000on other exchanges. Bitcoinhas fallen each day since, withlosses accelerating on Friday.

In the futures market, bit-coin one-month futures onCboe Global Markets werehalted due to the steep pricedrop, while those trading onthe CME hit the limit downthreshold. In the spot mar-ket, bitcoin fell to as low as$11,159, down more than 25per cent on the Luxembourg-based Bitstamp exchange, itslargest one-day drop in near-ly three years. For the week,it was down around a third— its worst performancesince April 2013.
