14.1 Introduction
High-performance steels (HPS) were developed through a cooperative research program between the US
Navy, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
At the time of this writing, two grades of HPS are available and have successfully been used in bridge
construction. Their ASTM designations are HPS50W and HPS70W (the equivalent metric designations
are HPS345W and HPS485W, respectively). A primary objective of developing HPS is to take advantage
of the higher strength offered by high-strength steels without compromising on weldability. Conven-
tional high-strength steels have a relatively high carbon content (approximately 19% by weight), and so
special attention is needed to obtain high quality welds. This typically requires preheating of the welded
parts, controlling the interpass temperature, controlling the energy input during passes, using special
electrodes, careful handling of the welding consumables, and if necessary applying postweld treatment
such as controlled cooling and feathering of the welds. When all operations are performed correctly and
all prescribed procedures are followed carefully, one can often obtain good quality welds in conventional
high-strength steels. Unfortunately, while these conditions can usually be met in a controlled envir-onment such as in a shop, difficulties may arise when such welding has to be done on the field. This is
particularly the case for bridge construction, when welding under less than optimal condition is often the
norm. HPS have a carbon content that is very comparable to low carbon steel, and they can be welded
under a variety of conditions without requiring the rather time consuming and often expensive pre- and
postweld treatments. In addition, it has been demonstrated experimentally that HPS exhibit good
toughness and satisfactory ductility values for use as an effective construction material.

14.2 Chemical Compositions
The chemical compositions for HPS50W (HPS345W) and HPS70W (HPS485W) are given in Table 14.1.
For purpose of comparison, the chemical compositions of a conventional high-strength steel commonly
used for bridge construction, A709-70W (A709-485W), are also given.It can be seen fromTable 14.1that the carbon level is much lower for HPS, thus enhancing weldability
and toughness. There is also a noticeable decrease in the amount of phosphorus, sulfur, and nickel, but
with the addition of molybdenum, aluminum, and nitrogen.
14.3 Mechanical Properties
HPS50W steel is produced by conventional hot-rolling or controlled rolling. Plates up to 4 in. (10.2 cm)
thick, similar to those of conventional Grade 50W steel, are available. The minimum yield and
tensile strengths of HPS50W (HPS345W) grade steel are 50 ksi (345 MPa) and 70 ksi (485 MPa),
respectively.
HPS70W steel is produced by either quenching and tempering (Q&T) or thermalmechanical con-
trolled processing (TMCP). Plates produced using Q&T are available up to 4 in. (10.2 cm) thick and 50 ft(15.25 m) long. Those produced using TMCP are available up to 2 in. (5.1 cm) thick and 125 ft (38 m)
long. The minimum yield and tensile strengths of HPS70W (HPS485W) grade steel are 70 ksi (485 MPa)
and 85 ksi (585 MPa), respectively.
In addition to strength, another important property of steel is fracture toughness. To avoid brittle
failure above an anticipated service temperature, steel use in bridge construction must satisfy an
AASHTO Charpy V-Notched (CVN) toughness requirements for a given temperature zone. There are
three temperature zones as shown in Table 14.2, with Zone 3 being the most severe.
It has been shown experimentally (Fisher and Wright 2000; Wright et al. 2001) that the two
HPS possess toughness not only higher than that of conventional bridge steel but exceeds the AASHTO
CVN Zone 3 requirements. Table 14.3 shows a comparison of the minimum CVN values between
HPS70W and the conventional Grade 70W steels. The enhanced fracture toughness of HPS is apparent.

The fatigue resistance of HPS, like conventional steels, is more of a function of the weld
details and the operating stress range. Tests on HPS have demonstrated that the detail categories for
load-induced fatigue given in AASHTO LRFD Section 6.6.1 (AASHTO 1998) for ordinary steels also
apply to HPS.
14.4 Ductility
Ductility is the ability of a material to undergo large inelastic deformation before failure. It is an
important material property because ductility allows for early warnings of incipient failure and permits
force redistribution to occur in statically indeterminate structures. One of the drawbacks of high-
strength steels is the reduction in ductility when compared to lower-strength steels, such as A36, A572,
and A992 structural steels. However, it has been reported that all HPS steels can achieve uniaxial
elongations in the range of 1830% (Bjorhovde 2004), which is more than adequate for engineering
applications. Moreover, tests on HPS wide-plate (8 0.75 in., or 20 2 cm) specimens with holes
(Dexter et al. 2002) under tension have shown that the tensile ductility capacity of HPS70W steels is well
within the required range for structural steel. The study also indicates that adequate ductility is achieved

Statistical analysis of the mill report tensile properties of more than 2400 heats of HPS70W has shown
thatFy/Fu 0.84, with a coefficient of variation of 0.06. This means in accordance with Equation 14.1,

Because the current American Institute of Steel and Concrete (AISC) and American Association for
State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) provisions for tension members with holes

designed according to code provisions.
Tests on full-sized girders made of HPS have also been performed (Dexter et al. 2002; Yakel et al.
2002). One objective of these tests was to determine the rotation ductility Rof these girders under

andEI is the flexure rigidity. To allow for moment redistribution, AASHTO implies an Rvalue of 3.
While the test of a simply supported hybrid girder (Dexter et al. 2002) with tension flange and web
made of HPS70W (HPS345W) steel and compression flange made of A572 Grade 50 under a three-
point bending test has indicated that an Rvalue exceeding 3 was achieved, anRvalue less than 3 was
reported for tests of compact and (web) noncompact girders (Yakel et al. 2002) made entirely of
HPS70W (HPS345W) steel. In addition, numerical studies on HPS girders under negative moment
(Barth et al. 2000) have shown that while HPS girders are able to develop their plastic moment
capacity, they are not able to provide the necessary rotation ductility for moment redistribution. As
a result, the 10% reduction in negative moments that is allowed for continuous girders to account for
moment redistribution should not be applied to HPS girders.
14.5 Weldability and Weathering Characteristics
14.5.1 Weldability
One advantage of HPS over conventional high-strength steels is its enhanced weldability due to the
lower carbon content in HPS. Because HPS can be welded under less stringent conditions when
compared to conventional high-strength steels, the recommended procedures for welding high-
strength steels outlined in Americal Welding Society (AWS) D1.5 Bridge Welding Code(AWS 2002) is
also applicable to welding HPS. In addition, an addendum is available (AASHTO 2000a) to provide
guidance to bridge engineers interested in using HPS in bridge design and construction.
One of the most common problems for bridge welds is hydrogen induced (cold) cracking in the
heat affected and fusion zones of the welds. Because hydrogen can come from many sources such as
atmosphere, water/moisture, grease, oxides, and contaminants, it is not an easy task to eliminate allhydrogen sources during the welding process. To reduce the likelihood of hydrogen induced cracking,
one needs to select the material carefully, exercise proper handling techniques for the consumables,
and follow established guidelines for welding procedures (AWS 2002). Specifying minimum preheat
and interpass temperature for welding also helps to minimize diffusible hydrogen during produc-
tion welding of HPS. High preheat temperature allows more time for hydrogen to diffuse from the
welds and it reduces the chance for the formation of brittle microstructures where cracks can initiate.
Table 14.4 shows the minimum preheat and interpass temperature for HPS70W using the two
recommended welding processes for HPS submerged arc welding (SAW) and shield metal arc

welding (SMAW) with consumables having a diffusible hydrogen Hd measured in terms of
milliliter per 100 grams of deposited weld material not exceeding the values shown. If the diffusible
hydrogen level exceeds the indicated values, or if the consumables are not as speci fied in Table 14.4, or
for HPS50W, the minimum preheat and interpass temperatures should follow those in AWS D1.5
(AWS 2002), which are usually higher than those shown in Table 14.4. Note that the interpass
temperatures shown are the minimum values required based on test specimens. If satisfactory results
are not achieved, temperatures higher than those shown may be required. In any case, the maximum
interpass temperature for welding HPS70W steel should not exceed 450F (232C).
In welding HPS, consumables with matching weld strength are recommended for SAW complete
penetration groove welding of HPS70W plates. Consumables with undermatched weld strength are
strongly recommended for all fillet welding of HPS70W plates because of reduced likelihood of
hydrogen cracking. In any event, careful control of heat input is of particular importance in minimizing
base metal microstructure effects and thus ensuring the soundness of the welds. The AWS recommended
range of heat input is 40 kJ/in. (1.6 kJ/mm) to 90 kJ/in. (3.5 kJ/mm).
For hybrid designs, the minimum preheat and interpass temperature should be based on the higher
value required by AWS D1.5 (AWS 2002) and those shown in Table 14.4. Also, when Grade 50W and
HPS70W steels are joined, consumables satisfactory for Grade 50W base metals as listed in AWS D1.5
should be used. To minimize the potential for hydrogen induced cracking, it is recommended thatconsumables be conformed to the diffusible hydrogen requirements of the AWS Filler Metal Specifi-
cation with optional supplementary moisture-resistance designator of H4 (i.e., Hd 4 ml/100 g) for
SAW or H8 (i.e., Hd 8 ml/100 g) for SMAW.
14.5.2 Weathering Characteristics
Used in an engineering context, a material with good weathering characteristics is one that has an
improved resistance to physical breakdown and chemical alteration over time when subjected to normal
atmospheric conditions. For steel bridges, corrosion of the load carrying members is a primary cause of
structural deterioration. The service life of a bridge can be prolonged if a more corrosion resistant
material is used and a more vigorous maintenance program is followed. When compared to conven-
tional high-strength steels, HPS have slightly better corrosion resistance. Corrosion tests conducted in
accordance with ASTM G101 have indicated that the atmospheric corrosion resistance index (CI)calculated using the equation

is 6.5 for HPS70W steel, as compared to a CI of 6.0 for conventional Grade 70W high-strength steel.
A CI of 6.5 means HPS70W possesses the chemical compositions to be classified as a high-performance
weathering steel. A bridge designer has the discretion of using HPS70W in an unpainted condition.

The elimination of painting in selected areas may help reduce the life-cycle maintenance cost
of the bridge.
Like conventional steels, HPS can also be painted. The paint can act as a protective coat and serve as
a barrier to retard atmospheric corrosion. In exposed areas or when used in unpainted conditions, the
same guidelines and detailing practice as outlined for conventional weathering grade steels (FHWA1989) should be followed to assure the successful application and durability of HPS.
14.6 Current Usage
The first bridge that uses HPS70W steel in design and construction was the Snyder South Bridge on
State Rt. 79 in Dodge County, Nebraska (Figure 14.2). It is a 150-ft (45.7-m) long simple span bridge
that provides a 35.5 ft (10.8 m) clear roadway on a concrete deck supported by five 40600 (137 cm)
deep welded plate girders. The bridge was opened to traffic in October 1997. Since then, the number
of bridges designed and constructed using some HPS components is on the rise. As of 2003, some
35 States in the United States have over 160 HPS bridges in service, or under design, fabrication,
and construction. The bridges vary in length from under 100 ft (Rte 3 over Rte 110, MA) to over
5000 ft (I-55/I-64/I-70/US-40 Poplar Street Complex, IL), differ in the number of spans, andrepresent various bridge types although Plate or I-girder bridges are the most common. HPS have
been used on these bridges as truss gusset plates, to floor systems and main girders. When used as
main girders, a design that employs HPS70W steel in the negative moment regions, or a hybrid design
that uses HPS70W steel for all bottom flanges and negative moment topflanges but uses conventional
Grade 50W or HPS50W in other areas is often employed (see Figure 14.3 for a specific design of a
uniformly loaded girder) because it represents a good compromise for strength, weight savings, and
economy. Although the unit cost of HPS is higher than conventional steels, savings can often be
achieved (Barker and Schrage 2000; Horton et al. 2000, 2003; Price and Cassity 2000; Van Ooyen
2002; Clingenpeel and Barth 2003) because the use of HPS generally results in smaller/shallower
members and fewer girders (since greater girder spacing can be used due to the higher strength
offered by the high-strength steels), and thus fewer diaphragms, stiffeners, and welds are needed. The
resulting structure is also lighter, so savings in the construction of the piers and abutments may be
realized. However, in using HPS or other high-strength steels for bridge construction, the designers
need to pay more attention to the overall deformations of the structure, global instability of the

girders, and local buckling of the component elements. These design aspects will be briefly addressedin the following section.
14.7 Design Considerations
14.7.1 Overall Deformation
Because of the potential for using fewer girder lines or smaller-sized girders when HPS70W or other
high-strength steels are used in the design, the overall deformation of the bridge is likely to be higher. For
instance, the strong axis moment of inertia calculated using the following equation for an I-shaped cross-
section shown inFigure 14.4will be smaller than that of a similar strength girder made of lower-strength
steels:

A smaller moment of inertia means the deflection of the girder will be larger. Consequently, if the
optional live load deflection criteria of Span/800 (for general vehicular load) or Span/1000 (for vehicularand pedestrian loads) as per AASHTO 2.5.2.6.2 is imposed, there is a possibility that de flection may
control the design of the bridge.
14.7.2 Global Instability
The smaller sized cross-section that results in a HPS70W design also means the girder is more susceptible
to lateral torsional instability. To prevent lateral torsional instability from occurring prematurely,
sufficient compression flange bracing should be provided as per AASHTO (AASHTO 1998)

Tests on noncomposite bridge girders made of HPS70W steel (Yakel et al. 2002) have demonstrated
that while noncompact and compact plate girders could provide the first yield and plastic moment
capacities, respectively, the compact plate girders were not able to provide an inelastic rotational
ductility of 3, as implied by the AASHTO Specification for compact sections. As a result, the 10%

14.7.4 Load-Induced Fatigue
According to a parametric study reported by Horton et al. (2000, 2003), the design of welded plate
girders made entirely from HPS70W or hybrid HPS70W and conventional (Grade 50W) steel is more
likely to be controlled by load-induced fatigue when compared to those made entirely of conventional
steel (Grade 50W). Using detail category C0 and C (AASHTO 2000b), and assuming full composite
action in both positive and negative bending regions as well as a lower bound (conservative) fatigue limit
equal to one-half the constant amplitude fatigue threshold value for all designs, Horton et al. concluded
that load-induced fatigue often governed the design of HPS welded girders that were less than 150 ft
(45.8 m) in length. For span length equal to or exceeding 200 ft (61 m), the effect of load-induced fatigue
becomes negligible. The reason load-induced fatigue governs the design of shorter span but not longer
span girders is because dead-load to total stress ratio increases with span length. As the dead-load to
total stress ratio increases, the corresponding live-load to total stress ratio will decrease, thus renderinga lower stress range for live-load stress and less pronounced fatigue effects. It should be pointed out that
the study reported by Horton et al. was conducted using a rather conservative fatigue limit that ignored
the effect of average daily truck traffic on the value of the fatigue limit. The actual volume of truck traffic
used for the design of a particular bridge may result in an increase in the allowable fatigue limit and thus
reduce or even eliminate the effect of load-induced fatigue on the design of the bridge.
14.7.5 Tension Field Action
Tensionfield action is a design consideration that allows a designer to make use of the postbuckling web
strength of a plate girder in computing its shear capacity when certain conditions are met. These
conditions are: the girder is homogeneous (i.e., the component elements of the cross-section are made
from the same material), the panel in which tensionfield action is considered in the design is an interior
web panel, there is a sufficient number of transverse stiffeners along the length of the girder to act asanchors for the tension stress band (Basler 1961a) after web buckling, and the web panel under con-
sideration must not be subjected to simultaneous high shear and moment (Basler 1961b). As of this
writing, the use of tensionfield action for hybrid girders isnotallowed. The reason for this is that the web
of a hybrid girder is usually fabricated from a lower-strength steel when compared to the flanges. As
a result, the web is likely to experience yielding when the nominal girder flexural strength is reached. It is
believed that this yielding would compromise the webs ability to act effectively as a tension strut in the
Pratt truss model used in the derivation of the postbuckling panel shear strength. Based on Basler s work,
Hurst (2000), Aydemir (2000), and Barker et al. (2002) have developed theoretical models that take into

consideration this web yielding in calculating the postbuckling panel shear strength of hybrid girders.
Modified shear strength and momentshear interaction equations have also been proposed. The validity
of these equations will be checked against numerical and experimental studies to determine if they are
appropriate for use in design. The allowance for tension field action in the design of hybrid girders is
likely to reduce benefits such as shallower girder depth, fewer transverse stiffeners, lower fabrication cost,lighter structure, etc.
14.7.6 Heat Curving
Tests conducted in a FHWA demonstration project have shown that localized short term application
of heat up to 1250F (677C) for purposes of heat curving, camber/sweep correction has no noticeable
adverse effect on the ultimate strength, yield strength, ductility, and CVN toughness of HPS70W steel.
However, as a conservative measure, the Guide (AASHTO 2000a) only allows limited application of
heat up to only 1100F (593C).
14.7.7 Ultrasonic Testing of HPS Welds
When tested according to current codes and recommended procedures, no problems have been reportedin regard to qualifying HPS welds using ultrasonic testing. Like any tests, the accuracy of the test is only
as good as the instrumentation used and the person who conducts the test. It is therefore recommended
that the test should only be performed by certified engineers/technicians using established procedures
(Birks et al. 1991; AWS 2002).
14.8 Summary
High-performance steels offer many advantages over conventional steels in bridge design and
construction. Some of the major benefits are
Improved weldability and lower preheat temperature. Enhanced weathering characteristics and durability.
Higher fracture toughness and crack tolerance. Wider girder spacing may help lower fabrication and construction cost. Shallower members may help solve or alleviate vertical clearance problem. Increased span lengths may help reduce the number of piers needed to support the superstructure. Lighter structure. Lower initial, or perhaps even life-cycle, costs.
Despite these advantages, the use of smaller/shallower and fewer girders in a HPS bridge means the
possibility of excessive deformations, global/local buckling, and increased load-induced fatigue. Care
must be exercised to ensure that both strength and serviceability limit states are satisfied. In addition, it
has been reported that difficulties were encountered in the drilling (Wasserman et al. 1998) and
reaming of HPS70W plates. The use of a larger quantity of lubricant in the holes and on the drill
bits and reamers may be needed. Moreover, there have been reports that show HPS70W steel has
a tendency to leave tiny pitting residue after blast cleaning, and mill scale removal by descaler is notparticularly effective. Finally, if HPS70W steel plates fabricated using the Q&T process are used, its
limited length (50 ft or 15 m) means more splice plates are needed to build a long girder. The increase
in the number of beam splices, the more expensive flux, and the higher material cost mean the unit cost
of a girder made of HPS70W steel is likely to be higher. However, a higher unit cost does not
necessarily translate to a higher overall cost because of the benefits outlined above for using HPS70W
steel in bridge construction.
The AASHTO load and resistance factor design (LRFD) Specifications (AASHTO 1998) have been
updated (AASHTO 2000a, 2000b) to allow for the use of HPS70W steel in bridge design. Studies have

shown that these specifications are adequate for use with HPS70W steel provided that the issues of
girder deformations, global and local buckling, and tension field action are properly addressed in the
design.

15.1 Introduction
15.1.1 Historical Development
Since the 1990s, the expression high-performance concrete and the acronym HPC have become verypopular and very fashionable in civil engineering. At a first glance, it sounds like advertising a new
product but, in most respects, HPC is not fundamentally different from the concrete that we have been
using all along, as it does not contain any new ingredient and does not involve new practices on site.
No single person invented HPC, and no single country pioneered its use. The development of HPC
materials in use today was an incremental and combined effort involving many individuals, companies,
government agencies, and countries, particularly in Asia, Europe, and North America.

The full development of HPC took quite a long time. Initially, HPC was mainly related to high-
strength concrete. Specified concrete strength for buildings steadily increased from 35 MPa in the 1950s
to 100 MPa by the end of the 1980s. During this period, the term high-strength concrete was frequently
used. However, when the high range water reducer orsuperplastizerwas invented and began to be used
to decrease the water/cement(w/c) or water/binder(w/b) ratios rather than being exclusively used asfluid modifiers for normal-strength concretes, it was found that in addition to improvement in strength,
concretes with very low w/c or w/b ratios also demonstrated other improved characteristics, such as
higher fluidity, higher elastic modulus, higher flexural strength, lower permeability, improved abrasion
resistance, and better durability. Today, the definition of HPC has expanded to encompass both
durability and strength.
The term high-performance concrete originally comes from French. It was coined in 1980 by Roger
Lacroix and Yves Malier [1]. In 1986, the French project New Ways for Concrete brought together 36
researchers from France, Switzerland, and Canada. The research, findings, and field applications of all the
members of this group formed the contents of the first book published that was solely devoted to HPC [2].
By the end of 1988, Pierre-Claude Atcin, assisted by Denis Mitchell and Michael Collins, wrote the
successful proposal for the Network of Centres of Excellence on High Performance Concrete, funded
under the Federal Government Centres of Excellence Programme. This research program started in
1990, and in its second phase, starting in 1994, the Network became known as Concrete Canada. The
researchers who comprised Concrete Canada were not the only Canadians researching and using HPC;
however, they were the preeminent and most active group in this field. By virtue of many publications in
scientific journals, a Newsletter sent to 7000 persons world-wide, the organization of technology transfer
days and seminars, and the construction of demonstration projects, Concrete Canada played the major
role in establishing HPC as a widely accepted construction material in Canada.
In the United States, starting from 1989, a 4-year investigation on the mechanical behavior of HPC was
initiated by the researchers at North Carolina State University under the support of the Strategic
Highway Research Program (SHRP) [3]. The research complied most of the publications in the HPC
area and provided very useful information for HPC studies.
Since the publication of these two documents, there has been a phenomenal increase in the devel-
opment and use of HPC. So a need exists to update the earlier documents and summarize the significant
developments during the past several years. This volume is a sequel to the earlier state-of-the-art reportand covers the 6-year period from 1989 to 1994. A second annotated bibliography containing 776
references for the 6-year period has also been compiled by the authors as a separate document [3].
In the decade 19902000, numerous research programs have been carried out in many countries in
Europe, Asia, Australasia, Japan, and North America. Meanwhile, thousands of papers on HPC have also
been published [4]. At present, the use of HPC has spread throughout the world.
15.1.2 Definition of HPC
Until now, it is not possible to provide a unique definition of HPC without considering the performance
requirements of the intended use of the concrete. Generally, HPC can be defined as a concrete composed
of the same raw materials as normal concrete with additional admixtures and engineered to achieve
enhanced workability, durability, or strength characteristics to meet the specific demands of a con-
struction project. Hence, any concrete that satisfies certain criteria proposed to overcome limitations of
conventional concretes may be called HPC.
In addition to various definitions given by different concrete researchers, many very respected insti-
tutitons have regulated the definitions according to their experiences and requirements. Some good
examples are given in the following list:
1. Definition from Strategic Highway Research Program. Based on the results of SHRP C-205, Zia et al.
[5] summarized the requirements for HPC as shown in Table 15.1.It should be noted that the
requirements include strength, w/b ratio, and durability factor.

2. Definition from FHWA. According to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), HPC is defined
as a concrete that has been designed to be more durable and, if necessary, stronger than con-
ventional concrete. Concrete so designated should meet significantly more stringent criteria than
those required for normal structural concrete. It should give optimized performance char-
acteristics and should have high workability, very high fluidity, and minimum or negligible
permeability. Serviceability as determined by crack control and deflection control, as well as long-
term environmental effects, is equally important as durability parameters. In 1996, the FHWA
proposed additional criteria for four different performance grades of HPC as shown in Table 15.2.
3. Definition from ACI. In 1993, the American Concrete Institute (ACI) published a broad
definition for HPC:
High-performance concrete (HPC) is defined as concrete which meets special performance
and uniformity requirements that cannot always be achieved by using only the conventional
materials and mixing, placing and curing practices. The performance requirements may
involve enhancements of placement and compaction without segregation, long-term
mechanical properties, early age strength, toughness, volume stability, or service life in severe
environments.
Based on the HPC definitions, it can be seen that HPC performance characteristics consist of two
categories: durability and strength. The durability and strength parameters divide field conditions into
three categories: climate, exposure effects, and load. To achieve the strength and durability requirements,
a lower w/b ratio is necessary. For most application of HPCs, the w/b ratio is less than 0.4. Furthermore,
some admixtures (both chemical and mineral) are usually needed to produce HPC.
In general, HPC is not one product but includes a range of materials with special properties beyond
conventional concrete and routine construction methods at that time. It only can be made by appro-
priate materials, suitable mix design and properly mixed, transported, placed, consolidated, and cured so
that the resulting concrete will give excellent performance in the structure in which it will be placed, in
the environment to which it will be exposed, and with loads to which it will be subjected to during its
design life. Presently, the primary characteristics of HPC can be summarized as easy placement, high
early age strength, toughness, superior long-term mechanical properties, and prolonged service life in
severe environment. Of course, some HPC applied in special fields and occasions possess some otherchacteristics, and these characteristics of HPC will change with time.
Herein, an important point must be emphasized. HPC is different from high-strength concrete:
a high-strength concrete is usually a HPC, but a HPC is not always a high-strength concrete because
HPC stresses concrete durability behavior, not excessively showing indication of high strength.
A high-strength concrete does not ensure that a durable concrete will be achieved. Given that the
required durability characteristics are more difficult to define than strength characteristics, specifica-
tions often use a combination of performance and prescriptive requirements, such as permeability
and a maximum watercementitious material ratio to achieve a durable concrete. The end result may

be a high-strength concrete, but this only comes as a by-product in the process of preparing
a durable concrete.
15.1.3 Types of HPC
Fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) Concrete with sufficient fiber reinforcement to provide ductility or
toughness equal to at least five times the area under the stressstrain curve for the same concrete mixture
without fiber reinforcement. FRC is normally associated with toughness, that is, the ability to absorb energy.
This energy absorption occurs primarily after the ultimate strength of the concrete has been attained.
High-durability concrete Concrete with a minimum durability factor (freezing and thawing) of
80%, as measured by AASHTO T 161 (Method A) (or ASTM C 666), and a w/c ratio of 0.35 or less.
A maximum w/c of 0.35 will provide a paste with a discontinuous capillary system after a relatively short
curing period (normally about a day). This provides improved resistance to moisture penetration and
chemical attack from the environment.
High-strength lightweight concrete concrete produced by using lightweight aggregates, such as
expanded clay, shale, and slate aggregates, so as to reduce the mass from 20 to 25% below that of
conventional concrete. Some lightweight concrete can attain compressive strengths greater than 69 MPa
(10,000 psi). This type of HPC is desirable in applications where reduction of dead load is a significantconsideration.
Self-consolidation concrete It is also called self-compaction concrete. In fresh stage, such a concrete
has the ability to fill formwork and encapsulate reinforcing bars only through the action of gravity, and
with maintained homogeneity.
15.1.4 Benefits to Construction
Many advantages have been brought to construction with the application of HPC. The following
highlights the primary construction-related benefits:
1. High strength. HPC, generally speaking, has high compressive strength. The high-strength
property, on the one hand, can increase the load carrying capacity of the structural members such
as steel bar reinforced concrete columns and shells, resulting in less reinforcing steel and labor
consumption, and materials costs saving. On the other hand, by keeping the same load, the cross-section size of the primary structural members can be considerably diminished. The benefit to
flexural strength of construction components can also be improved due to high strength.
Although high strength cannot enhance the flexural strength too much, the compressed region
depth can be greatly decreased for the bended members and the corresponding ductility is
markedly improved. Meanwhile, higher steel bar ratio can be allowed for, which further increases
the flexural strength or reduces the cross-section size.
2. Improved workability. Due to the addition of water reducing admixtures, especially super-
plasticizer, and the increased cement content in HPC, the workability of HPC, including fluidity
and cohesiveness, is generally improved. For self-compacting concrete, a type of HPC, the
concrete can flow in mold without compaction.
3. Low volume change. The lower volume deformation of HPC brings about an increase in stiffness,
which is very beneficial to those beams and plates whose cross-section sizes are controlled by
deformation. As with prestressed enforcement concrete members, three advances can be obtained:higher prestress gain, earlier applied prestress, and less loss in prestress.
4. HPC has a special significance for these constructions whose loads primarily come from the self-
weight. There can be a great improvement in reducing the bearing load of foundations by using
HPC. Furthermore, more space can be effectively utilized for housing constructions caused by the
smaller cross-section size using HPC. For bridge constructions, more net space below the bridge
decks and the lower roadbed can be obtained. For underground engineering, the use of HPC may
reduce the excavation mass. In addition, the construction modules can be adjusted into identical
sizes, resulting in a lower production cost of modules.

5. Enhanced durabilities. Greatly enhanced durability properties of HPC allow the overall life of the
structure to be significantly extended. The period of time until maintenance is needed is much
longer than conventional concrete, therefore, there is less disruption to the public due to repairs
and less maintenance costs. In addition, HPC is less permeable than conventional concrete, which
makes it more resistant to salts in seawater, freezethaw cycles, and damage caused by chemicaldeicing, which is very attractive in environments where ordinary concrete would not suffice such
as marine, high rate running water, or easily collision engineering.
15.1.5 Future Development
Significant evolutions relating to HPC have been taking place in the past two decades. These evolutions
have been facilitated considerably by increased knowledge of the atomic and molecular structure, studies
of long-term durability, development of more powerful instruments and monitoring techniques, and the
need for stronger, higher-performance materials suitable for larger structures, long span, and more
ductility. The last two decades can be described as the decades of HPC.
Despite these tremendous advances in concrete technology and development of HPC, there is still
much scope for new mineral and chemical admixtures, microstructure studies, better material selection
proportioning, placement techniques, long-term performance, and new structural design formulationscompatible with the behavior and potential of HPC.
The present state of the art in concrete materials research has demonstrated that the use of mineral
admixtures as cementitious materials used together with Portland cement in concrete not only con-
tributes to high-performance gain of HPC but also to energy saving and a solution to the disposal of
industrial by-products. Recent progress in the use of fly ash, slag, silica fume, and natural pozzolans are
noteworthy. The development of new cements such macrodefect-free cement and densified small particle
(DSP) cement, and the advances in HPC-based composites such as slurry-infiltrated fiber concrete or
slurry-infiltrated fiber mesh concrete, and reactive powder concrete (RPC) have all reached compressive
strength levels of 300 MPa, particularly, for RPC, 800 MPa compressive strength can be obtained. Since
self-consolidation concrete has the advantages of high performance in both fresh and hardened states,
cost competitive, improved working and living environments, and enhancement towards automation of
construction process, its applications will become broader and broader in the whole world.
Deterioration of the infrastructure governs replacement or rehabilitation. Rehabilitation often requiresnew materials and techniques compatible with the parent system. In all these, concrete in various forms
and compositions is the only suitable material. Adding the factor of rapid population growth, parti-
cularly in the underdeveloped parts of the world, and the continuous increased urbanization and
industrialization, it is clear that the 21st century will still be the golden age of HPC.
15.2 Materials
15.2.1 Portland Cement
HPCs have been produced successfully using Types I, II, and III Portland cements that meet the ASTM
Standard Specification C 150. Unfortunately, ASTM C 150 is very imprecise in its chemical and physical
requirements, and so cements that meet these rather loose specifications can vary quite widely in their
fineness and chemical composition. Consequently, the same type of cements have quite differentrheological and mechanical characteristics, particularly when used in combination with chemical
admixtures and mineral admixtures. Therefore, when choosing Portland cements for producing HPC
three requirements should be satisfied: (1) it can develop the appropriate strength at given ages; (2) it
exhibits good rheological behavior, particularly when chemical admixtures are incorporated; and (3) it
should not generate too much hydration heat.
The strength of the cement has a strong influence on the properties of HPC. If the cement cannot
develop reasonable strength at given ages, it is impossible to achieve the mechanical and durability
requirements of HPC.

The strength of cement paste is the result of the process of hydration. The hydration process results in
the formation of crystal phases such as Ca(OH) 2, AFt/AFm, and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) gel
phase. The crystal phases interlock each other and construct the bone of the harden paste. For CSH
gels, it fills in the cavities among the bone. Table 15.3 shows the relative contribution of each component
of the cement toward the rate of gain in strength. The early strength of portland cement is mainly
controlled by the percentages of C3S. C3S contributes most to the strength developed during the first day
after placing the concrete.
In general, no special compressive strength criterion is specified for cement used for the manufacture of
HPC; however, Portland cement is preferable with 52.5 MPa or greater compressive strength at 28 days.
Increasing the fineness of the Portland cement will, on the one hand, increase the early strength of theconcrete. On the other hand, higher fineness will lead to a more rapid release of hydration heat and a big
rheological problem, which are attributed to the rapid reaction and the great amount of ettringite
formation at early ages. Early work by Perenchio [7] indicated that fine cements produced higher early
strengths, though at later ages the strength differences of different fineness cement concrete were not
significant. Most cements now used to produce HPC have Blaine finenesses that are in the range of 300
to 400 m2/kg.
The work of Perenchio [7] indicates that cements with higher C3A contents lead to higher strengths.
However, subsequent work [8] has shown that high C3A contents generally leads to rapid loss of flow for
fresh concrete. Therefore, cements with high C3A contents should be avoided for the production of
HPC. Atcin [9] has shown that C3A should be primarily in its cubic, rather than its orthorhombic, form.
Further, Atcin suggests that attention must also be paid not only to the total amount of SO3 in the
cement but also to the amount of soluble sulfates. Thus, the degree of sulfurization of the clinker is an
important parameter. In addition to commercially available cements conforming to ASTM Types I, II,and III, a number of cements have been formulated specifically for HPC.
Generally, HPC typically contains higher cement content than normal concrete in order to develop
good workability, high strength, low permeability, and excellent durability. Thus, much attention should
be paid on hydration heat for HPC, particularly for massive HPC structures.
Since different types of cement generate different amounts of hydration heat at different rates, the type
of structure governs the type of cement to be used. The bulkier and the heavier in cross-section the
structure is, the less generation of heat of hydration is desired. In massive HPC structures such as
transferring floor, type IV cement is a good candidate to use. In addition, the reduction in hydration heat
can also be accomplished in the presence of mineral admixture, ASTM type II cements, or moderate-heat
blended cements. From this discussion it is seen that the type of structure, the weather, and other
conditions under which the structure is built and that will exist during its life span are the governing
factors in the choice of the type of cement that should be used.
15.2.2 Aggregate
The aggregate, including coarse and fine aggregates, consists of about 70 to 80% of the total concrete by
volume; thus, it is very important in the production of HPC. The main factors affecting the development
of high performance of concrete are: particle shape, particle size distribution, strength of the aggregate,
and possible chemical reaction between the aggregate and the paste. Unlike their use in normal concrete,
where we rarely consider the strength of the coarse aggregate, in high-strength concrete the aggregates
may well become one important strength limiting factor. Also, since it is necessary to maintain a low w/c

ratio to achieve high strength, the shape and grading of the aggregate, including fine and coarse
aggregates, must also be very tightly controlled.
15.2.2.1 Coarse Aggregate
For HPC, the coarse aggregate particles themselves must be strong. A number of different rock types
used to make HPC include: limestone, dolomite, granite, andesite, and diabase. It has been suggested
that in most cases the bond strength between the cement matrix and the aggregate is not usually the
limiting factor in HPC; rather, it is the aggregate strength itself. In addition, aggregates that may be
susceptible to alkaliaggregate reaction or D-cracking, should be avoided if possible, even though the
low w/c ratios used will tend to reduce the severity of these types of reaction.
From both concrete strength and fresh concrete mixture rheological considerations, the coarse
aggregate particles should be roughly equidimensional: either crushed rock or natural gravels are sui-
table. Flat or elongated particles must be avoided at all costs. They are inherently weak, and lead to harsh
mixes. In addition, it is important to ensure that the aggregate is clean, since a layer of silt or clay may
reduce the cementaggregate bond strength and increase the water demand. Thus, the coarse aggregate
should be washed if there is too much fine powder. Finally, the aggregates should not be highly polished
(as is sometimes the case with river-run gravels), because this will reduce the cementaggregate bond.Not much work has been carried out on the effects of aggregate mineralogy on the properties of HPC.
However, a detailed study by Atcin and Methta [10], involving four hard strong aggregates (diabase,
limestone, granite, natural siliceous gravel), revealed that the granite and the gravel yielded much lower
strengths andE-values than the other two aggregates. This phenomenon appeared to be related both to
aggregate strength and to the strength of the cementaggregate transition zone. Cook [11] had also
pointed out the effect of the elasticity modulus of the coarse aggregate on that of the concrete. However,
much work remains to be done to establish the relationship between the mechanical and mineralogical
properties of the aggregate and those of the resulting HPC.
It is commonly assumed that a smaller maximum size of coarse aggregate will lead to a more
homogenous concrete and higher strengths. The maximum particle size of 20 mm coarse aggregate is
commonly recommended for the production of HPC.
15.2.2.2 Fine AggregateThe fine aggregate should consist of smooth rounded particles to improve the workability of fresh
concrete. Normally, the fine aggregate grading should conform to the limits established by the American
Concrete Institute [12] for normal-strength concrete. However, for HPC the gradings of fine aggregate
should lie on the coarser side of these limits. A fineness modulus of 3.0 or greater is recommended
[13,14] for HPC to decrease the water demand and to improve the workability of these paste-rich mixes.
Of course, the sand too must be free of silt or clay particles.
15.2.3 Mineral Admixtures (Silica Fume, Fly Ash, Slag, Metakaoline)
As indicated above, most modern HPCs contain at least one type of mineral admixture: silica fume, fly
ash, blast-furnace slag, or metakaoline. Very often, the fly ash or slag is used in conjunction with silica
fume or metakaoline. In the United States, fly ash is specified in ASTM C 618.1 and blast-furnace slag inASTM C 989. There is, as yet, no US standard for silica fume and metakaoline. These materials are
described in detail in Supplementary Cementing Materials for Concrete.
15.2.3.1 Silica Fume
Silica fume (seeFigure 15.1)is a by-product of the induction arc furnaces in the silicon metal and ferro-
silicon alloy industries. Reduction of quartz to silicon at temperature up to 2000C produces SiO vapors,
which oxidize and condense in the low-temperature zone to tiny spherical particles consisting of non-
crystalline silica. The material is removed by filtering the outgoing gases in bag filters. A size distribution of

silica fume is shown in Figure 15.2. More accurately, the size distribution of a typical silica fume product
is provided as
20% below 0.05 mm
70% below 0.10 mm
95% below 0.20 mm
99% below 0.50 mm
Microsilica has surface area around 20 m2/g and its average bulk density is 586 kg/m3. Compared with
normal Portland cement and typical fly ashes, silica fume sizes are two orders of magnitude finer. Thus,
the material is highly pozzolanic and reacts very quickly with calcium hydroxide caused by hydration of
cement to form high-strength calcium silicate hydrates (CSH). However, it creates problems of
handling and increases the water requirement in concrete appreciably unless superplasticizer is used.
The typical chemical composition of silica fume is shown in Table 15.4. It can be seen that silica is
dominant (>92%) in the material.

It is possible to make HPC with compressive strengths of up to about 98 MPa without silica fume.
Beyond that strength level, however, silica fume becomes essential, and even at lower strengths of 63 to
98 MPa. It is easier to make HPC with silica fume than without it. Thus, when it is available at a
reasonable price, it should generally be a component of the HPC mix.
15.2.3.2 Fly Ash
Fly ash (pulverized fuel ash; see Figure 15.3) is a by-product of electricity generating plants using coal as
fuel. During combustion of powdered coal in modern power plants, as coal passes through the high-temperature zone in the furnace, the volatile matter and carbon are burned off, whereas most of the
mineral impurities, such as clays, quartz, and feldspar, will melt at the high temperature. The fused matter
is quickly transported to lower-temperature zones, where it solidifies as spherical particles of glass. Some
of the mineral matter agglomerates forming bottom ash, but most of it flies out with the flue gas stream
and thus is called fly ash. This ash is subsequently removed from the gas by electrostatic precipitators.
Fly ash can be divided into two categories according to the calcium content. The ash containing less
than 10% CaO (from bituminous coal) is called low-calcium fly ash (Class F) and the ash typically
containing 15 to 30% of CaO (from lignite coal) is called high-calcium fly ash (Class C). Usually, the

high-calcium fly ash is more reactive because it contains most of the calcium in the form of reactive
crystalline compounds, such as C3A and CS.
Micrographic evidence presented inFigure 15.3shows that most of the particles in fly ash occurs as
solid spheres of glass, but sometimes a small number of hollow spheres, which are called cenospheres
(completely empty), and plerospheres (packed with numerous small spheres), present. The size dis-tribution of fly ash is slightly smaller than those of Portland cement with more than 50% under 20 mm.
It was found from the researches carried out in past 40 years or so that the incorporation of fly ash into
concrete has certain advantages and some disadvantages. The major advantages of fly ash concrete are
low cost, low energy demand, and low hydration heat. The disadvantages of fly ash concrete are low
early-age strength, longer initial setting time, and the variability in its physical and chemical char-
acteristics. Thus, for high strengthhigh performance concrete, silica fume must be used in conjunction
with the fly ash, though this practice has not been common in the past.
In general, for high strengthhigh performance concrete applications, fly ash is used at dosage rates of
about 15% of the cement content. Because of the variability of the fly ash produced even from a single
plant, however, quality control is particularly important. This involves determinations of the Blaine
specific surface area, as well as the chemical composition. And, as with silica fume, it is important to
check the degree of crystallinity. The more glassy the fly ash, the better.
15.2.3.3 Blast-Furnace Slag
Blast-furnace slag (see Figure 15.4) is a glassy material that is made by rapidly quenching molten blast-
furnace slag and grinding the resulting material into a fine powder. It is composed essentially of silicates
and aluminosilicates of calcium. When it is ground to cement fineness, it is referred to as ground
granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBFS), and it is commonly used in HPC mixtures. GGBFS is classified
by ASTM C 989 (AASHTO M 302) according to its level of reactivity. Depending on the desired
properties, the amount of GGBFS can be as high as 80% of the total cementitious materials content.
The use of GGBFS reduces the permeability of the mature concrete. It is believed that this
improvement is a result of the reaction of the GGBFS with the calcium hydroxide and alkalis released
during hydration of the Portland cement. The reaction products fill the pore spaces in the paste and
result in a denser microstructure. In addition to reducing the permeability of concrete, GGBFS also
improves resistance to sulfate attack because of the low calcium hydroxide content. Like fly ash, GGBFSis also used to reduce the temperature rise in mass concrete. GGBFS improves the workability of fresh
concrete. It is believed that the smooth, dense surfaces of the slag particles (Figure 15.4) result in very
little water absorption during the mixing process.

In North America, slag is not as widely available as in Europe and Asia, and hence there is not much
information available as to its performance in high-strength concrete. However, the indications are that,
as with fly ash, slags that perform well in ordinary concrete are suitable for use in high-strength concrete,
at dosage rates between 15 and 30%. The lower dosage rates should be used in the winter, so that the
concrete develops strength rapidly enough for efficient form removal. For very high strengths in excess of96 MPa, it will likely be necessary to use the slag in conjunction with silica fume.
The chemical composition of slag does not generally vary very much. Therefore, routine quality
control is generally confined to Blaine specific surface area tests, and x-ray diffraction studies to check on
the degree of crystallinity (which should be low).
15.2.3.4 Metakaoline
Metakaoline, generally called calcined clay, is a reactive aluminosilicate pozzolan produced by heating
kaolinite at a specific temperature regime. It may react with calcium hydroxide to form calcium silicate
and calcium aluminate hydrates. The type of mineral admixture conforms to ASTM C618 class N
pozzolan specifications. Metakaoline (Figure 15.5) typically has an average particle size of about 1.5 mm
in diameter, which is between silica fume (0.1 to 0.12 mm) and Portland cement (15 to 20 mm).
As a new mineral admixture for producing HPC, metakaolinite can produce HPC of compressivestrengths in excess of 110 MPa through replacing part of the cement in the mixture. Tests have shown
that use of 5 to 10% by mass of metakaoline can produce HPC with performance characteristics
comparable to those of silica fume concretes with respect to strength development, chloride ion
penetration, drying shrinkage, and resistance to freezethaw cycles and scaling. Further tests are required
to confirm these findings.
15.2.4 Chemical Admixtures (Superplasticizer)
Chemical admixtures are important and necessary components for the preparation of HPC. The
concrete properties, both in fresh and hardened states, can be significantly modified or improved by
chemical admixtures. In some countries, 70 to 80% of concrete contains one or more admixtures (88%
in Canada, 85% in Australia, and 71% in the United States). It is thus important for civil engineersto be familiar with commonly used admixtures. Presently, many types of chemical admixtures are
being used in HPC. The following will only discuss the most commonly used chemical admixture
superplasticizer.

15.2.4.1 Superplasticizers
In modern concrete practice, it is almost impossible to make HPC with adequate workability in the field
without superplasticizers. Unfortunately, different superplasticizers would behave quite differently with
different cements (even cements of nominally the same type). This is due in part to the variability in the
minor components of the cement (which are not generally specified), and in part to the fact that the
acceptance standards for superplasticizers themselves are not very rigorous. Thus, some cements will
simply be found to be incompatible with certain superplasticizers.
There are, basically, three common types of superplasticizer: (1) lignosulfonate based; (2) poly-
condensale of formaldehyde and melamine sulfonate (often referred to simply as melamine sulfonate);
and (3) polycondensate of formaldehyde and naphthalene sulfonate (often referred to as naphthalene
sulfonate).
In addition, a variety of other molecules might be mixed in with these basic formulations. It may thus
be very difficult to determine the precise chemical composition of most superplasticizers; certainly
manufacturers try to keep their formulations as closely guarded secrets.
It should be noted that much of what we know about superplasticizers comes from tests carried out on
normal strength concretes, at relatively low superplasticizer contents. This does not necessarily reflect
their performance at very low w/c ratios and very high superplasticizer dosage.
15.2.4.1.1 Lignosulfonate-Based Superplasticizers
In high strengthhigh performance concrete, lignosulfonate superplasticizers are generally used in
conjunction with either melamine or naphthalene superplasticizers. This tends not to be efficient enough
for the economic production of very high-strength concretes on their own. Sometimes, lignosulfonates
are used for initial slump control, with the melamines or naphthalenes used subsequently for slump
control in the field.
15.2.4.1.2 Melamine Sulfonate Superplasticizers
Until recently, only one melamine superplasticizer was available (trade name Melment), but now other
melamine-based superplasticizers are likely to become commercially available shortly.
Melamine superplasticizers are clear liquids, containing about 22% solid particles; they are generally in
the form of their sodium salt. These superplasticizers have been used for many years now with goodresults, and so they remain popular with high-strength concrete producers.
15.2.4.1.3 Naphthalene Sulfonate Superplasticizers
Naphthalene superplasticizers have been in use longer than any of the others, and are available under a
greater number of brand names. They are available as both a powder and a brown liquid; in the liquid
form they typically have a solids content of about 40%. They are generally available as either calcium
salts, or more commonly, sodium salts. (Calcium salts should be used in the case where a potentially
alkali-reactive aggregate is used.)
The particular advantages of naphthalene superplasticizers, apart from their being slightly less
expensive than the other types, appears to be that they make it easier to control the rheological properties
of high-strength concrete because of their slight retarding action.
For a superplasticizer, great concern should be paid on the superplasticizercement compatibility,
apart from the commonly considering water-reducing ratio. As is well known, the production of modernHPC typically requires a low w/b ratio. This means that high dosages of superplasticizers have to be
incorporated to improve workability. In conjunction with the relatively low water contents of modern
HPC, typically in the range of 125 to 145 L/m 3, this may lead to superplasticizercement compatibility
problems. In particular, the rapid rate of water consumption, which occurs during the formation of
ettringite (C3A 3CaSO4 32H2O), drastically reduces the already small amount of mixing water. This can
result in insufficient water available to provide proper workability, particularly when there is no opti-
mum content of calcium sulfate [15]. Recent work by Mokhtarzadeh and French [16] has highlighted the
care that must be taken in choosing an appropriate superplasticizer for any particular HPC mix; the

choice must be made by considering the superplasticizer effects on both workability and long-term
strength.
15.2.5 Polymers
The incorporation of a polymer into concrete can produce excellent HPC with compressive strength of
100 MPa or higher and tensile strength of 10 MPa or higher. The commonly used polymers for pro-
ducing HPC include: epoxy, methyl methacrylate, styrene, unsaturated polyster resins, vinyl esters, and
latex.
These polymers are incorporated into Portland cement pastes commonly in the form of water-soluble
or emulsified solutions. As the Portland cement hardens, the polymer simultaneously hardens forming a
continuous matrix of polymer that penetrates throughout the whole concrete specimen, thus facilitating
a rapid decrease in porosity of cement concrete.
15.3 Different Types of High-Performance Concrete
15.3.1 High-Strength Concrete
15.3.1.1 Definition
High-strength concrete is defined as the concrete made with a normal-weight aggregate with a com-
pressive strength higher than 50 MPa.
15.3.1.2 Differences from Normal-Strength Concrete
To make high-strength concrete, more stringent quality control and more care in the selection of
materials are needed. The microstructure and failure modes in compression of high-strength concrete
are quite different from the normal-strength concrete.
From a microstructure point of view, the behavior of high-strength concrete is more like a homo-
geneous material. The extent of porosity in the transition zone is greatly reduced and thus almost
eliminates the existence of the transition zone. Also, the amount of microcracking in high-strength
concrete associated with shrinkage, short-term loading, and sustained loading is significantly less than in
normal-strength concrete. As for the failure mode, high-strength concrete usually has a vertical crack
going through the aggregate and shows a more brittle mode of fracture and less volumetric dilation.
15.3.1.3 Materials for High-Strength Concrete
Usually, the materials used for normal-strength concrete can be used to make high-strength concrete.
However, for the aggregate to be used, it is better to choose a high-strength concrete if possible. The
composition of high-strength concrete is different from normal-strength concrete. The maximum size of
the aggregate is usually limited to 20 mm. The cement content is high (400 to 600 kg/m3). The limitation
on the maximum aggregate size is to reduce the strength of the transition zone and to get a more
homogeneous material. The higher cement content results from the limited maximum aggregate size and
the need for workability under the smaller w/c ratio condition.
15.3.1.4 Water/Cement Ratio and Abrams Law
Water/cement ratio is the most important factor influencing various kinds of concrete properties. Thebasic measure usually taken in making high-strength concrete is to reduce the w/c ratio from the values
for normal-strength concrete of about 0.5 or higher to about 0.3 or less. This result can be inferred from
Abrams law:
