High Performance Alloys Profile

Formed in 1984, to specialize in quick deliveries and small quantities. We also offer our services toquantities that are larger (around 1000 pounds,) and will estimate for deliveries through our large network ofmills for even larger needs. HPA represents several fine mills throughout the world, such as: HaynesInternational, Krupp VDM, Teledyne Allegheny Ludlum/Jessop, Special Metals, Huntington Alloys, CarpenterTechnology, Bohler, Deutsche Nickel, Foroni, Valbruna, Crucible, Dunkirk, Universal and Electralloy.

HPA is also a secondary producer of these alloys, as well as a number of other alloys. Most to all of theproduction is performed at our Tipton facility. From forging to rolling, and finishing. Our concentration hasbeen on production or toll processing of Alloys that contain a high concentration of Nickel, Cobalt,Molybdenum, Chromium, Tantalum, or Titanium.

In general, we supply NITRONIC, HASTELLOY, INCONEL, STELLITE, and MONEL in various sizes of bar, wire, sheet, plate and fasteners.

Metals Service Center  Multiple saw types available to readily cut bars to multiple lengths (MULTS). A piece can be cut from thesheet or plate using a shear or CNC plasma. We also offer secondary processes such as rough machining, and even light fabricating. Our lead times for machining and grinding are dependant on how much materialis being quoted. Small to medium orders are welcome. Special size or temper required? We have productioncapabilities in-house to produce bars, plates, sheets and forgings to many tempers, and sizes – all on an asneeded basis.

Secondary Producer   A GFM 412 Rotary Forge was installed in 1995. A 2 high rolling mill was installed in 2001, and a 750 tonforge press has been installed in 2007. We specialize in making available the sizes and alloys that are notcommon, not produced yet, or too small of a quantity that a larger mill will not produce! We use out 2 high rolling mill to produce small bars, hex, narrow flats, and rectangular. These products areprimarily cold finished, and hot or warm rolled when necessary. The 750 ton forging press makes squares, rounds, upsets and planished forgings. Working bed is 14” x 36”wide, allowing many possibilities of products from under 50 lbs up to 3000 lb piece weights.

Production of Special Metals  As a secondary producer, we also specialize in small quantities. By serving this niche market, we help our

mills with developmental alloys and also our customers - by making that size or alloy available in a shortamount of time, without having to purchase a heat lot quantity. Many projects only require a small amount toevaluate a material for process / application suitability.

NITRONIC 60® (Alloy 218) Fe 63, Cr 17, Mn 8, Ni 8.5, Si 4, N 0.13 (UNS S21800)

 Austenitic Stainless

Nitronic 60 is truly an all purpose metal. This fully austenitic alloy was originally designed as a wear alloy, and subsequently has good high temperature properties for temperatures around 1800ºF. The oxidationresistance of Nitronic 60 is similar to Type 309 S.S., and far superior to Type 304S.S.

The additions of Silicon and Manganese have given this alloy a matrix to inhibit wear, galling, and fretting

even in the annealed condition. Higher strengths are attainable through cold working the material and arestill fully austenitic after severe cold-working. This working does not enhance the anti-galling properties as isnormal for carbon steels and some stainless steels. The benefit to the cold or hot work put into the materialis added strength and hardness, and the wear resistance does not decrease noticeably. Chromium andNickel additions give it comparable corrosion to 304 and 316 stainless steels, while having approximatelytwice the yield strength. The high mechanical strength in annealed parts permits use of reduced crosssections for weight, and cost reductions through the use of thinner stock.

Several data sheets are available on the wear compatibility of this alloy with dissimilar couples, as well asself-mated coupled results. Call or email for your own booklet!

If you’re galling problem occurs at less than 1500ºF, then you should think about switching to this alloy.Nitronic 60 has a better cost advantage than any other alloy available. Other materials require an additionalamount of heat treating to raise their hardness, where NITRONIC 60 is excellent in the annealed condition.

Characteristics

Corrosion Properties The corrosion resistance of Armco NITRONIC 60 Stainless Steel falls between that of types 304 and 316.However, experience shows that in a wear system, a galling or seizure failure occurs first, followed bydimensional loss due to wear, and finally corrosion. Galling and wear must be the first concerns of thedesign engineer. Although the general corrosion resistance of NITRONIC 60 is not quite as good as Type316, it does offer better chloride pitting resistance, stress corrosion cracking resistance and crevice

corrosion resistance than Type 316 in laboratory conditions. Corrosion tests are not normally performed withNITRONIC 60 High Strength.

Corrosion Resistance Nitronic 60’s uniform corrosion resistance is better than 304 stainless in most environments. The yieldstrength of Nitronic 60 is nearly twice that of 304 and 316 stainless steels. Chloride pitting resistance issuperior to that of type 316 stainless; Nitronic 60 provides excellent high temperature oxidation resistance

and low temperature impact. Applications using Nitronic 60 are valve stems, seats, and trim, fastening systems, screening, pins, bushingsand roller bearings, pump shafts and rings. Other uses include wear plates, rails guides, and bridge pins.

Annealing Temperature NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel can be supplied annealed at 1950 F to 2050 F (1066 C to 1121 C). For mostapplications, the 1950 F (1066 C) condition should be selected, as it provides a higher level of mechanicalproperties along with excellent corrosion resistance. When as-welded material is to be used in stronglycorrosive media, the 2050 F (1121 C) condition should be specified in order to minimize the possibility ofintergranular attack.

Corrosion Properties  Armco NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel provides outstanding corrosion resistance - superior to Types 316,316L, 317 and 317L in many media. For many applications the 1950 F (1066 C) annealed condition providesadequate corrosion resistance and a higher strength level. In very corrosive media or where material is to beused in the as-welded condition, the 2050 F (1121 C) annealed condition should be specified. High-Strength(HS) NITRONIC 50 bars are useful for applications such as shafting and bolting, but do not quite exhibit thecorrosion resistance of the annealed conditions in all environments.

Intergranular Attack The resistance to intergranular attack is excellent even when sensitized at 1250 F (675 C) for one hour tosimulate the heat-affected zone of heavy weldments. Material annealed at 1950 F (1066 C) has very goodresistance to intergranular attack for most applications. However, when thick sections are used in the as-welded condition in certain strongly corrosive media, the 2050 F (1121 C) condition gives optimum corrosionresistance.

Stress-Corrosion Cracking Resistance In common with most stainless steels, under certain conditions, Armco NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel maystress-corrosion crack in hot chloride environments. When tested in boiling 420/0 MgCI2 solution, a veryaccelerated test, NITRONIC 50 Stainless Steel is between types 304 and 316 stainless steels in resistanceto cracking. There is little difference in susceptibility to cracking whether in the annealed, high-strength (HS),or cold-drawn conditions.

Sulfide Stress Cracking Both laboratory tests and field service experience have shown that Armco NITRONIC 50 stainless hasexcellent resistance to sulfide stress cracking in air conditions. NITRONIC 50 in both the annealed and high-strength (hot rolled) conditions has been included in the 1996 revision of NACE Standard MR-01 -75'"Sulfide Stress Cracking Resistant Metallic Material for Oil Field Equipment," at hardness levels up to RC 35maximum. PLEASE NOTE:  Abrasive wear is NOT the same as metal-to-metal wear, or galling. Abrasive wear iscaused by objects that slide uncontinuously across a surface. Abrasion is tearing or shearing of the surface, and is best remedied using a low cost material. Corrosion is also a factor in abrasion, as it can lead to fasterfailure by allowing larger pieces to flake. If you are experiencing these types of failures, see NITRONIC 60, or  HPAlloys Cobalt 6B.

HPA COBALT al loy 6B (Co-Cr-W) Co 59.0, Cr 30.0, W 3.5, Ni 2.5, Mn 1.4, C 1.0 (UNS R30016)

Cobalt 6B is cobalt based chromium, tungsten alloy for wear environments where seizing, galling andabrasion are present. 6B is resistant to seizing and galling and with its low coefficient of friction, allowssliding contact with other metals without damage by metal pick up in many cases. Seizing and galling can beminimized in applications without lubrication or where lubrication is impractical. Metal seizing is similar toone metal piece building heat against another and they become "welded" together. Galling is when these"weld" areas break off and form abrasive debris which creates additional abrasion problems.

Alloy 6B has outstanding resistance to most types of wear. Its wear resistance is inherent and not the resultof cold working, heat treating or any other method. This inherent property reduces the amount of heattreating and post machining. 6B has outstanding resistance to cavitation erosion. Steam turbine erosionshields from 6B have protected the blades of turbines for years of continuous service. 6B has good impactand thermal shock resistance resists heat and oxidation, retains high hardness even at red heat (thencooled, recovers full original hardness) and has resistance to a variety of corrosive media. 6B is usefulwhere both wear and corrosion resistance is needed.

HPA COBALT al loy 6BH (Co-Cr-W) Co 59.0, Cr 30.0, W 3.5, Ni 2.5, Mn 1.4, C 1.0 (UNS R30016)

Cobalt 6BH is the same composition of Cobalt 6B, except the material is hot rolled and then age hardened. The direct age-hardening after hot rolling provides the maximum hardness and wear resistance. Theadvantages this creates are increased wear life, retained edge characteristics, and increased hardness. These properties are in addition to the galling and seizing resistance of the regular Cobalt 6B.

Cobalt 6BH is known in the industry as a metal that retains its cutting edge. The economic advantages are inits long wear time, less down time, and fewer replacements. This material surpasses 6K with better ductility, with the same good hardness.

INCONEL nickel-chromium-iron alloy 601 is a general-purpose engineering material for applications thatrequire resistance to heat and corrosion. The outstanding characteristic of INCONEL alloy 601 is itsresistance to high-temperature oxidation. The alloy also has good resistance to aqueous corrosion, has highmechanical strength, and is readily formed, machined, and welded.

The limiting chemical composition of INCONEL alloy 601 is listed in Table 1. The composition is a face-centered-cubic solid solution with a high degree of metallurgical stability. The alloy’s nickel base, inconjunction with substantial chromium content, provides resistance too many corrosive media and high-temperature environments. Oxidation resistance is further enhanced by the aluminum content.

Characteristics

•  The most important property of Alloy 601 is resistance to oxidation at very high temperatures up to1250C. Even under severe conditions such as, cyclical heating and cooling. This is possible due to
