This journal celebrates Kiwanis. Not just its ideals, but also the people whomake Kiwanis special, its members as well as the people who support our efforts. We thank everyone who contributed to this journal and to all our appeals and events. You have given of your hard earned cash; you have given of your time; you havegiven of your spirit… You lent a hand or an ear…If you were there for a Kiwanian, you were there for Kiwanis.
While this 75th Anniversary Journal commemorates a joyous milestone for theHicksville Club, we continue to live in a world which has become increasingly polarized; A world in which people are divided by race, ethnicity and socio-economicdifferences; a world in which violence sometimes triumphs over love and diplomacy; a world in which too many still struggle for food and shelter. While as individuals we may not be able to effect great change, together we can make miracles. That senseof community is what makes us whole. It is that very celebration of humanity, thatmakes us human.
It is in Kiwanis that we find our sense of community; our connection to that very special sense of selflessness… of caring for others as ourselves. Through our work in the community we can give to those less fortunate. Much our current efforts havefocused on supporting the Hicksville food pantries. We continue to work toward theday where no child will go to sleep hungry. The current Kiwanis global initiative isto eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus - an initiative we support and embrace.
As we look back over the seventy-five years of service, we applaud the fine work of years past and look forward to the challenges of our next seventy-five years. We know that with your support we will make this world a better place – one community, one child at a time.
The Kiwanis Internation Story
Kiwanis was founded in Detroit, Michigan, January 21, 1915 by professional organizer Allen
Browne. The first Kiwanian was a merchant tailor named Joseph Prance. The original name was
“The Benevolent Order of Brothers,”and its purpose was the mutual exchange of preferred treat-
ment in professional and business dealings. Within a year, the name had been changed to “Kiwa-
nis,” taken from a Native American term “Nun Keewanis” which loosely means “Self Expression.”
It had become obvious that the original purpose lacked appeal for many members. The purpose of
the organization thus became “community service,” a humanitarian concept from which Kiwanis
has never deviated.
In the Fall of 1936 , a group of true visionaries decided that the comunity of
Hicksvilledeserved a Kiwanis Club. That dream became a reality when the formal charter was is-
sued by Kiwanis International on June 20, 1937. It is because of their forsight and hard work that
today we are a thriving club. Each successive president, officers and directors have put their indeli-
ble stamp on this organization - helping it grow. In 1987 Kiwanis International recognized the valu-
able contribution that women make to our society, and while late in coming admitted women for
membership. The Hicksville Club was on the forfront in this area and we applaud, what was for Ki-
wanis a very bold step. We salute the visionaries who created Kiwanis International and those who
created the Hicksville Club - we are forever in your debt.

Past Presidents
On August 24, 1940, God smiled andNicholas J. Brigandi entered the world. Growingup on Bay Avenue in a loving family – with his par-ents, grocery store owners, Antoinette and Cono, his siblings – brothers, Anthony, Louis, and John;sisters Angie and Jane. His parents taught theirchildren well – he learned to deal honestly witheveryone and help neighbors in need. His school-ing at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic School rein-forced this concern for others.
Growing up in the 40s and 50s, Nick en-joyed the simple pleasures of his hometown - stick-ball in the street and playing on the grounds of the“Old Courthouse” – now the Hicksville GregoryMuseum. Nick would go on to serve on the mu-seum board of directors…a place that held so manymemories for him.
Family was very important to Nick and lifecentered on this love of family. He often taggedalong with his older siblings, especially his sisterAngie. His brother Anthony and his Uncle Augieinspired him to raise racing pigeons, which he diduntil 1971.
On September 27, 1959, Nick began hisservice in the Hicksville Fire Department - Depart-ment Sergeant of Arms (over 30 years); HonoraryChief of the Department; Honorary Captain of En-gine Company #7; Company #7 Trustee of Ex-
empts (since 1986); Chaplain of Exempt Benevo-lent Association (current); Past President of ExemptBenevolent Association (1984-85); Member of theNassau/Suffolk Exempt Association; Captain ofHICKS Racing Team (8 years) - raced 20 years;1999 Grand Marshall of the Labor Day Parade &Drill;, Honorable Grand Marshall of the Labor DayParade & Drill; Charter Member of Fire Police;Member of NYS Firemen’s Association; Memberof Southern NY Firemen’s Association; Member ofNassau County Firemen’s Association.
In 1960 Nick launched his career in theNassau County Department of Public Works. Hestarted as a laborer, advanced to foreman andHighway Maintenance Supervisor, receiving manyawards and certificates.
He married Veronica (Ronnie) in 1966 andthey lived in his childhood home until 1971. Ron-nie and Nick are blessed with two wonderful chil-dren – Theresa and Michael. The love of familyserved as a wonderful example – Theresa marriedLarry and they have two children, Larry (22) andVictoria (18). Michael married Corrinda and theirtwo children are Jason (11) and Halle (8).
Nick began his position as elected WaterCommissioner in 1980, currently serving as theDistrict Treasurer. This other “love of his life” is ev-idenced by his dedicated service. He holds mem-

berships in American Water Works Association,Long Island Water Conference, Nassau-SuffolkWater Commissioners Association, and Nassau-Suffolk Water Commissioners Association.
Whenever he gets the chance, Nick lovesfishing with his best friend, Tom. He also enjoysthe morning “breakfast club” at the HicksvilleSweet Shop with Tom, Bill, and Doug. That iswhere he meets all his lifelong friends.
When Nick retired from Nassau County in1980, he continued and increased his commitmentto serving Hicksville through his community work- Hicksville Chamber of Commerce where he wasrecognized as the 2010 Citizen of the Year; as aboard member of the Hicksville Community Coun-cil and recipient of the 2004 President’s Award;4th degree Knight and Outside Guard in the Knightsof Columbus Joseph Barry Council, a Director ofthe Kiwanis Club/Kiwanis Foundation ofHicksville, a Charter member of Sons of ItalyGalileo Galilei Lodge; Eucharistic Minister andAdult Altar Server for Holy Family Parish; and amember of the Northwest and Gardens Civic As-sociations.
Nick truly believes that in giving we receiveand feels blessed in many ways – wonderful friends, wonderful family and the opportunity to improvethe lives of others.
While this array of service is impressive andnoteworthy, The NICHOLAS J.BRIGANDI SPIRITOF GIVING AWARD created in Nicky’s name, symbolizes the very special way in which he servesour community. No matter what the request, Nicknever says, “No.” Rather he responds, “Let mesee what I can do.” He checks his “magic” calen-dar and figures about how he can help all of us,never judging any request less important or lesscompelling than another - like a ministry where herespects everyone and celebrates the humanity ineach of us. There is never a complaint or harshword. Kiwanis is truly blessed to have our own “St.Nicholas.” Indeed, the spirit in which he works, orperhaps through which he works, is both extraor-dinary and heroic. It our good fortune to have Nickin our Kiwanis Club and naming the award for him,is our way of celebrating our dear friend. We alsorecognize that without the support of his wonderfulwife, Ronnie and his entire family, Nick would notbe able to do the fine works that he does. We thankyou for sharing Nick with us and the entireHicksville Community.

75 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE
On occasions such as this, it is both appropriate and important to give thanks…
First, we thank everyone here this evening for joining in the celebration. Milestone celebrations are even
more special when they are shared with the people we care about and who care about us.
We also must thank those who were able to take journal ads. Since this is our only fall fund raising event,
your generosity will allow us to continue serving our local and global communities.
Family and friends, whether here or not, must be thanked for providing the often needed financial,
physical/logistical and the all-important emotional support we need.
Of course, a thank you to all the members of the Hicksville Club, past and present, and all our friends
throughout Kiwanis for believing that we can, and do, make a difference and that we can change the
world, one child, one community at a time…
A special thank you must go the Nick Brigandi for reminding us that there is a higher call to service.
We must also applaud his wife Ronnie and the entire family for supporting Nick’s extraordinary
kindness and caring.
The last thank you must go to the wonderful members of the anniversary committee -
Dori Breitfeller
Beth Dalton Costello
Douglas Lake
Kathleen Matykiewicz
Phillip Tornatore, DDS
Elaine Westerman
Without your hard work and dedication to this event, we would not be here tonight. We are truly blessed
to count you among our friends.
AS YOU THINK ABOUT ALL THINGS YOU ARE THANKFUL FOR, PLEASE THINK ABOUT
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO PAY IT FORWARD…IF KIWANIS IS THE ANSWER, WE WELCOME
YOU WITH OPEN ARMS AND HEARTS.
Yours in Kiwanis,
