Hiatal Hernia Symptoms: Do You Have It?

Do you ignore simple heartburn? You might think that this discomfort is nothing because most of the time it is temporary and resolves on its own. Please have second thoughts, because this heartburn might be telling you something that you often ignore, it can be a hiatal hernia symptom.A hernia is defined as bulging of an organ or in some cases only a part of an organ through the cavity that contains it. There are many kinds of hernia; it can develop anywhere in the body but in most cases it is found in the abdominal cavity. One of the most common types is the Hiatal Hernia. It is a condition in which the opening in the diaphragm to which there is an enlargement of the oesophagus and then what

happens also is that a part of the upper gastric potion tends to move up into the lower portion of the chest cavity. The incidence of Hiatal hernia is higher in women than in men.The two types of Hiatal hernia are the sliding and paraesophageal. The sliding type occurs because the upper stomach and the junction between the esophagus and stomach are being displaced upward, the result is it slides in and slides out of the thorax, the other type of Hiatal hernia which is paraesophageal occurs when parts of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm.

Hiatal HerniaHiatal Hernia symptoms vary. If it is the sliding type then the patient may experience heartburn, regurgitation or back flow of food from the stomach and dyspepsia or difficulty of swallowing. According to clinical experts 50 percent of patient with the sliding type Hiatal hernia symptoms may be absent or the patient is asymptomatic.In patients with para esophageal type hiatal hernia symptoms are feeling of fullness after eating and sometimes also are asymptomatic. In this type of Hiatal hernia also there is an absence of reflux of stomach contents and the sphincter between the oesophagus and stomach is intact compared to the sliding hiatal hernia which is opposite.Hiatal hernias vary in size; the small ones don’t usually cause any problems or discomfort to the patient and always remain undiagnosed but a large hiatal hernia manifest different signs and symptoms that tend to become worst when the patient lies down, strain or even lift heavy objects. There are rare cases wherein patients with hiatal hernia experiences severe chest pain and obstruction in the oesophagus because it is possible that the part of the stomach that protrudes into the chest cavity becomes strangulated or twisted cutting off the blood supply in that area.Our body communicates to us that we are developing an illness through manifesting different signs and symptoms. It is up to us on how to deal with it, whether we ignore it or consult a doctor. A hiatal hernia can be symptomatic and asymptomatic, therefore a regular visit to the doctor will help us a lot to live a quality life, absence of any discomfort and early detection of any underlying illness.
