HYDAC is a provider of fluid power solutions to OEM’s, manufacturers and end users for a variety of heavy-duty mobile and industrial equipment.

Executives at HYDAC’s Bethlehem, Pennsylvania location were looking to expand the company’s production workspace. The plan was to convert a 14,000 square foot area of their building, previously used for storage, to production space. Before the conversion could happen, significant issues with the concrete flooring had to be resolved. HYDAC reached out to Hi-Tech Concrete Coatings and its URETEK ICR Northeast division to manage the flooring repairs and ensure that the new production space had durable concrete flooring that would provide optimal performance and maximum efficiency for years to come.

Challenge

The flooring area that was to be converted to production space had previously undergone shot blasting service, with disastrous results. Another provider had performed the shot blasting which, when done properly, removes contamination and soft concrete particles to prep the surface for improved bonding of floor coatings. The shot blast service, however, was done improperly and left huge pores in the concrete – causing the floor surface to turn to powder and deteriorate.

The condition of the concrete floor worsened, as problems with cracks, joints and settlement soon ensued. Hi-Tech Concrete Coatings was contacted by HYDAC to assess the overall damage and provide an effective, long-term solution that would optimize floor performance and prepare it for its new use in a production environment.

Solution

After evaluating the condition of the concrete flooring and assessing the damage caused by the shot blasting process, Hi-Tech recommended a series of steps that would 1) repair the concrete by concrete cracks and settlement issues 2) properly resurface the floor, and 3) add high-performance coatings to create a new floor with extreme durability, optimal performance and ease of maintenance.

To tackle HYDAC’s challenges, the specialized services of URETEK ICR Northeast were utilized. URETEK ICR Northeast is a division of Hi-Tech Concrete Coatings that specializes in concrete lifting and stabilization applications. The use of their revolutionary URETEK polymer and unique application process provides a fast, effective and economical solution for lifting and stabilization challenges. URETEK’s specialties, when combined with Hi-Tech’s 25+ years of experience in high-performance coatings and resurfacers, provides customers with the best solutions for both surface and substrate challenges that are common in industrial, commercial and even residential environments.

To begin the road to floor recovery, Hi-Tech utilized the following repair steps:

➢ A cleaning process was first completed to rid the floor surface of dirt, stains and heavy oil areas.

➢ Using the unique application process, the URETEK polymer was then injected into void areas around the concrete joints. (How it works: using a small, skilled team of operators, the polymer is injected through small 5/8” penny-sized holes, where it quickly expands and densifies to fill the voids and keep joints in place. This process is significantly cleaner, quicker and more economical than other traditional concrete repair methods.)

➢ The URETEK injection process was also used to lift two areas of sunken concrete that arose from settlement issues.

➢ Random cracks and holes that were present were also repaired.

➢ A series of surface preparation steps were then executed. These steps are a critical ingredient to ensuring a well-bonded, smooth floor, and it is a step that is often ignored – ultimately resulting in floor failure.

➢ As a final step, Hi-Tech applied a topcoat with highly reflective attributes. The high reflectivity surface contributes to more efficient lighting needs of the area, and provides a very clean appearance and more comfortable work environment.

Results

The final results of the HYDAC project were impressive, and the benefits that the company continues to experience are many:

➢ Easier floor cleanup and maintenance – as a result of decreased concrete dusting, dirt and liquid build-up.
