HAnnr, WADHAMS MILLS.—Oun MmsiosAivrm March lo\ 1872.—Doubtless, tho read- ers of your paper will be interested in news concerning Mr, and Mrs. Whitney, who went from this place last May, under nppointment of tho A, B. C. F. M M to Micronesia. Letters wero received from them a few days ngo, bringing the ilrst news from them, sinco their departure from the Sandwich Islands. They sailed from Honolulu, 8. t,, in tho Morning Star, July 22, 1871, and reached their station, Ebon, Marshall Islands, Micron* ebia, A u g , 2 8 . They Buffered severely for a timo from sea-sickness, witnessed the burial at sea, of a Micronesian, visit- ed several mission stations before reach- ing their destination, and just escaped shipwreck when almost at their journey's end. Ebon i s a coral island. I t i s a cir- cular strip of land, one mile in width ant 25 miles in circumference, encircling a lagoon or lako. The danger they experi- enced in entering this lagoon is portrayed by t h e p e n of Mrs. Whitney, as follows. "It was decided to outer tho lagoon. Tt is a rare chance to have a wind in tho right direction for coming in, and we were very thankful for a favoring wind, as it would be hard to land BO many things from the rough sea outside. But our j o y w a s Boon turned to anxiety and terror. That channel is a fearful place. The wonder to mo is that any vessel over did get through. Where we first e n t e r e d , it is perhaps ninety fathoms from land to land. B u t t h o reef extends out under the water, making a channel perhaps a third of a milo long and twice tho length of tho ship in width, and crooked at that. Tho tido was setting in, making quito a current in tho direction wo wero going. The vessel moved on nil right until, in trying to keep well u p t o tho windward, they turned her a little too far so that the b o w g o t o u t of tho current. So, in- stead of minding her helm, tho current took the stern around so that sho stood square across tho passage. To get out of thiH "pilikea" ( a s t h e Hawaiians would call it), they turned tho ship back again toward the entrance and took a fresh start, This time BIIO d i d n o t g e t head- way enough for Bteerago, and in spite of all tho efforts made, she kept working more and more to tho leeward side of the passage. T was o n t h e deck in an out-of- the-way Corner, watching the scone. All tho w a y T could help was by Bilent prayer. And I could not believe that God would let another Morning Star bo lost BO soon, even when I heard Mr. Snow from aloft cry out 'Hero w e a r e o n t h o rocks f and tho next moment felt the jar of tho Vessel as she struck. Everybody looked at each other in dismay for a moment, then tho order to haul down the Bails WUB prompt- ly obeyed. Tho passengers wero all at work with the Bcamen* Preparations were made to g e t o u t t h e hedge-anchor and try to pull her off with that; b u t b e - fore that could be done, tho joyful an- nouncement was made'She's all niloat!' Never sails went up quicker, and with thankful hearts Wo flaw the «hip once moro under way. Tho incoming tide had been our deliverer, The danger w a s n o t all over, and we felt tho grating against the rocks once more in passing around a corner o f t h e crooked channel, but not enough this time to stop the progress of tho ship, a n d w o wero safely at anchor near the mission, about two o'clock in tho afternoon." Their first impressions of Micronesia are very oncouraging. A pleasant home and climate, a deep interest o n t h e part of the christian natives, in their welfare, and the cause of Christ cheer them. Pickerel will never thrive in but very few of the Ad- rondack lakes. The water 1B too clear anil cold, and but very few natural places foj them to spawn, And as for their catching trout, I believe one large trout will catch ten young pickerel where ten pickerel will catch one young trout, if they would live In the same waters. Pickerel did thrive In Lake Sanford, at Adirondack, while the) had it flowed, but when the dam went off, the pickerel went off with it 5 or in othci i words, flopped breeding. Thirty five ycai> ago lake trout were getting scarce in Sehroon Lake, and some twenty-five to twenty-eight years ugo they stocked the lake with pick- erel, They multiplied quite rapid, as it hap- pened to be a favorable season for them to breed, I suppose, aud a great mauy have been caught there since. But of late they aro growing scarce, I suppose, from what 1 can learn from the best authority, and lake trout have beeu gradually Increasing ever since pickerel were first put In, Bass are flm that are strangers to me, and as I don't trouble straugers, I will say nothing about them, But the worst enemies of trout arc mtn- ows, that eat the spawn aud young trout before they are able to take care of them- sleves. Probably there is not a place on the continent, according to the water, equal to Edmonds Ponds for trout, and there is not a ghost o f a fish there but trout. JohnB Brook is the same, only running Water in- stead of lake. No lack of fish there till the ministers came here with their little minow hooks aud caught whole baskets full of trout not more than two inches long. But there are a good many streams that are properly trout streams, that have no fish of any kind that ougtit to bo stocked, and a few lakes that I hope to live to see stocked with trout. By a most kindly aud generous dUposlUou, by a constant overflow of genial spirits, euUvencd with a brilliant, but a lways chastened humor, and more than all, by a strong and deep under* current of serious, carnert, and manly feeling! he endeared himself to all classes, y o u n g and old, grave, thoughtful and gay alLke. day evening, March 4, 1S72, at ? o'clock, the

door bell of the M. K. Parsonage at Dannemo-

ra rung a* though some ono was more than

usually anxious to find shelter from the wind

and cold. On opening the door t w o ladles ol

Dnnnetnora, w h o owed us a call, first appeared.

then followed men, women and children with

tamps and chairs, laughing at the storm, or

something else, you may guess what . But there

appoared to be uo guess work with them, they

understood their business, and gave us lo un

derstand that they hud Bomcthlng more Impor

tant on hand than eat ing and drinking. Said

they had enough to eat and drink at homo We,

therefore, being in the minority, were obliged

to surrender.

As soon a* the intruders and the surprised be

came reconciled, all but the latter were invited

up stairs to boar "a speech.'* The result w a s

that another speech was made, which wc were

permitted to hear. The prominent point was

•HiO.41, presented a* an expression of regard

for us, and the work lu which wc arc engaged.

Others have raised the amount to 1174.10 cash.

At about 9 o'clock the company dispersed, ap

parently BB well pleased as we were with the

character and result of their unexpected call at

the parsonage, not a tovrd concerning il having

reached us before tho bell rung. When all w a s quiet, wife and I went up stairs

to lake a look flt things there. On the study table wc found a paper contalng tho names of our benefactors and the amount contributed by each, also a number of good things which, with other favors in the line of surprises previously received, make It fitting for us gratefully to acknowledge the receipt of over #200, all as good as the green back*. Persons knowing all the circumstances agree with mo in say lug, the whole affair was , in more than one sense, a genuine surprise, I mention no names, but shall remember them, aud shall pray that the friend* of truth and true religion at Danncinora aud Cadyvtlle may be abundantly rewarded for their kindness t o ' t h e i r unworthy servant and his family. *S.
