Parent/Caregiver Below is part of the Principal’s address at our Graduation Ceremony held at the school on October 27.

Firstly, can I express the school’s appreciation that Jay Weatherill, our newly appointed Premier of SA, John Rau, Paul Caica and Steve Georganas have agreed to attend tonight. It is a huge compliment to the local school community and sends a strong message about your support for Public Education in this state.

Almost 200 young men and women will tonight celebrate the completion of 12 years of schooling and the beginning of a very new life.

However, we want to spend a short time first in sharing some highlights of the past year.

Ahn Pham achieved our best individual 2010 SACE result – and was subsequently presented as the 2010 Dux at our first assembly. All students intending to complete their SACE were successful. There was significant improvement in our Stage 1 results.

The retention of our year 12s at school was over 100% - few left during the year – and we gained more than we lost!

More recently we have received our NAPLAN results. We are pleased with our literacy results, happy to see improvement in our numeracy data and growth in student improvement from year 7 to 9 that was above the National benchmark.

Marshall Tearle, a year 11 student and a recipient of a HHS Council Scholarship won a Royal Adelaide show award for his robots and will travel to Malaysia next year as part of his prize - he is currently being mentored by staff from Uni SA.

Victoria Langton, also a HHS Scholarship holder, and year 10 student, won a model hovercraft for her Research Project through Flinders University’s Project 21.

Chris Harrison, a year 12 student in our Supported Learning Centre, has completed his secondary schooling at HHS against all possible odds.

Mark White has established a chess club at Henley which enabled him to successfully complete his Research Project.

Corbyn Johnson won a federally funded Defence Scholarship for 2011.

In August, Henley and St Michael's College competed in a range of sports for the inaugural Caica Cup. Henley won, of course. A big thank you to Paul for his ongoing support for both schools.

A week later, Henley again won – this time against a strong team of 60 athletes from the Hunter Sports School in Newcastle, during our annual exchange.

Henley continues to be blessed with outstanding drama, music and dance students and each term we are privileged to be able to attend quality performances.

Our Creative Industries students have been working with a mentor from the ABC to establish our Recording Studio.

Our Trade Training Centre has gained 3 mini Stobie poles from ETSA for our Certificate 2 electrical engineering students. Two Certificate 2 Metal engineering students have won apprenticeships. Chris Houltby, our Apprenticeship Broker has supported Kyle Adcock to convert from a school-based apprenticeship in carpentry into a full time apprenticeship with his employer, Goode Quality Constructions. Henley now has 17 active school based apprentices.

Our canteen won a prize from our local Council for exemplary hygiene and food preparation and we have just announced Hambour as our new uniform supplier, for our new uniform shop.

Henley High School

News From the Principal

The students in our Supported Learning Centre are very much part of our school and the performance of Alyssa Pupolo at our last whole school assembly brought tears to the eyes of our most hardened adolescents.

The commercial kitchen in our Home Economics Centre continues to produce outstanding coffee – and beautifully presented and very tasty food for a wide range of school events.

Our Middle School students are involved in a range of Innovation Projects within their subschools.

Middle School staff have represented the school in presentations for the Advanced Technologies Project. Henley is a lead school for our region in the implementation of this federally funded program aimed at improving retention and performance in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Significant increases in enrolments into Renewable Energies are just one example of success so far.

Professor Robert Hill, the Dean of Science at Adelaide University, and an old scholar, and our Scientist in Residence, Tara Pukala, continue to provide outstanding support to our students. Rob was the inspirational speaker at our inaugural G&T forum for 50 highly gifted STEM students from the region, including 15 from Henley. Adelaide University also provides 12-15 interns each year – these 4th year trainee teachers spend 6-8 months in the school.

All 4 of our 2010 aboriginal graduates completed their SACE. Two are now in full time employment – with Qantas and the local council. The other two have been drafted to play AFL football.

Our International Student program continues to grow despite the economic downturn. There has been significant growth in short stays – from Korea, Japan,

Indonesia and Thailand, and the introduction of study tours for teachers- from Indonesia, Korea and Thailand. Middle School students are now communicating via email with their peers from a SMART school in Malaysia and the number of Henley buddies has grown significantly as students look to completing the Citizenship component of their Personal Learning Plan.

All staff and all students in years 8 – 10 currently have their own laptop to support their teaching and learning. We are preparing to expand this program in 2012 to include all students and staff. From 2012 we will have a Virtual Library and we are negotiating with publishers to replace text books with e-books. I am keen to provide an e-book to all staff as their Christmas present. In almost all aspects, we are becoming a paperless school.

And we are indeed a very proud,

comprehensive, local and 21st century

Government School Now, to our graduates.

Thank you from us all for your contribution to HHS over the past 5 years.

We do wish you all the best – for your exams and completion of assignments – and for whatever pathway you take next.

We hope you will one day return – as old scholars - possibly with equally prestigious occupations as our 3 guests tonight.

Middle School News

On the 19th October, 8FL2 were involved in a Mapping Walk around the suburb of Henley Beach. With the sun shining and a gentle breeze blowing, we could not have asked for a better day to complete the walk. The aim of the walk was for students to use the mapping skills that they had learnt throughout Term 3 to guide themselves around the suburb to checkpoints, using nothing but grid points and a street directory map of the suburb. At each of the checkpoints that they had to find, students took a photo of their group in front of the landmark to prove that that they had found the checkpoint.

Overall, the students found it rewarding navigating their way around Henley Beach as well as enjoying being able to interact with some of the local community on the walk. It was a great success with all students completing the walk successfully and identifying all of the checkpoints along the way.

It is hard to believe that in a few weeks time our Year 9 students will leave the Middle School environment and commence the next stage to their educational journey. On behalf of their teachers we wish them all the very best for their future years at Henley and thank them for the contribution they have made to their Sub School and the Middle School overall.

Their place in the Middle School will be taken by 225 new Year 8 students who will have their two Transition Days on Thursday and Friday, 1st and 2nd December. These days will also provide opportunities for our current Year 8 students to work with these students as part of the Peer Support Program.

In the meantime there is a substantial amount of work to be completed for all students in the Middle School and we expect standards to be maintained right through to the end of the year. Punctuality, attendance, uniform and engagement in learning will continue to be a focus of the Middle School team and teachers for the remainder of this term.

I would also like to remind students of their responsibilities as Independent Learners that if they are absent from school due to illness, holidays or other commitments (sport, excursions, etc) then it is their responsibility to find out what work they have missed, due dates, etc. We also encourage them to negotiate and discuss timelines and issues with their respective teachers if they are having difficulty with completing tasks and meeting deadlines.

Congratulations to all students on their term 3 results. Students who have achieved “Outstanding Academic Achievement” and “Academic

Achievement” will be awarded their certificates at a morning tea in week 5 and

we look forward to seeing parents/caregivers at this assembly. A list of award winners will be published in the next newsletter. In 2102 we will be introducing “Improvement Awards” to those students who make significant improvement in their assessments as the year progresses.

This term will see all sub schools involved in an “Innovative Activity”. The aim of this activity is to have all students in the Sub School participate in an activity or learning experience together that involves collaboration and cooperation, mixed vertically grouped (8/9) classes and different teachers. The activity will, amongst other things, provide opportunities for leadership, public speaking, mentoring and presentation skills and will focus on either curriculum of PLP capabilities. Two of the Sub Schools have trialled their activity in term 3 with outstanding success and there will be a further report in the next newsletter on innovation in the Middle School.

Finally we look forward to seeing a number of Middle School students and their families at our “8-11 Presentation Day” on Wednesday 30th November. This is a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge the efforts, performances and achievements of our Middle School students.

Applications close on the 21st Nov, 2011.

In Term 3, the Mawson Sub School have participated in two innovative activities, a sub-school quiz and the ‘Tides of Change’ integrated unit of work.

The quiz groups were made up of both Year 8’s and 9’s and showed that they could work well together. It was enjoyable to work with different people and to do something different on a Friday afternoon. The quiz included questions from all different subjects such as Maths, English, Science, SOSE and Music. We are looking forward to doing more activities like this as a sub school.

Another innovative activity Mawson is completing is the ‘Tides of Change’ unit which has integrated SOSE and Science curriculum areas. Some of the topics include food chains and webs, environmental influences, respiration and biodiversity. Each group of students has a group leader and 3 or 4 other people. Each group has taken the responsibility for researching a topic and planning different ways to teach it to the rest of the class, to engage the different learning styles (visual, oral, hands on etc.) All the students have really enjoyed taking responsibility for their own learning and working with other students to design and teach their topic to the class.

These innovative activities have meant that we can use the open sub-school classrooms in a different way and learn about things with other people who we don’t usually work with. We are looking forward to more activities like these in 2012!

Middle School News

On the 31st of October Mr LeCornu and a group of year 9 students went to The University of Adelaide to celebrate the international year of chemistry by watching the ‘Chemistry Spectacular’. The show contained demonstrations of spectacular chemical reactions.

They had different scientists for each experiment. In the first experiment Flaming Metals, Dr Natalie Williamson showed us how the flame test is used to visually determine the identity of an unknown metal based on the colour of its flame. We learned that compounds of these metals provide the beautiful colours in a fireworks display.

The third experiment was called Shrinking Balloons by Dr Peter Hoffmann & Dr Stephen Bell and as the name suggests, when a blown up balloon comes in contact with liquid nitrogen the balloon will shrink. This happens because the liquid nitrogen has the ability to slow down the movement of air molecules inside the balloon, reducing the pressure and resulting in a smaller volume. There were 10 other experiments called Barking Dogs, Glow in the Dark, Gun Cotton & Flash Powder, Burning Gummy Bear, Tyndall Effect, Clock reactions, Elephant’s Toothpaste & Candle, Exploding Balloons, Burning Carbon Dioxide and Thermite reaction.

My favourite experiment would have to be Burning Gummy Bear. Gummy bears are made of gelatine and sugar. This demonstration showed how much energy is present in one gummy bear. When heated, sodium chlorate decomposes to give NaCl (salt) and oxygen. The oxygen then oxidises the sugar in the gummy bear to produce carbon dioxide, water and releases a lot of energy. The flames looked spectacular and it also smelt really nice.

During the show, we also learned about the history of Adelaide University and about the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the well-being of humankind.

This year coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awarded to Marie Curie for the discovery of radium and polonium. 2011 is also the 100th anniversary of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies providing a chance to highlight the benefits of international scientific collaboration.

Overall I think all of the experiments were great and we all learned a great deal about chemistry.

All Senior School students completed their subject selections for 2012 at the Course Confirmation Days in Term 3. Now the timetable grid for subjects has been completed and the final grid reflects 96% of the students 1st preferences. So a small number of students needed to be re-counselled and this was done by appointment on 11th November. There still may be a few adjustments to timetables once placements in VET courses have been finalised. Students will be contacted if further recounselling is needed.

The Year 8-11 Presentation will be held on Wednesday November 23rd at 1.00pm in the Main Hall. This will be for all parents and students in Years 8-11. Furniture as they can use all the skills learnt in previous years to make an item of furniture of their choice. The most popular choice this year is the “slimline” style of entertainment unit. Pictured with this article are some examples of student work.

Iain Burns Design and Technology Coordinator

As you are aware Henley has had a significant rollout of laptops to students and staff over the last few years.

For 2012 we now wish to offer our yr 12s three options:-

1) Bring to school a private laptop (recommended configuration attached) and be provided access to most HHS software or

2) Students purchase ACER option through ACER website – links and process TBA when available or

3) Receive a recycled school machine (re-imaged staff or senior trolley machine) for a modest security fee of $50 (fully refundable on the return of the machine in working order).

Further points of clarification;

All year 12s will be provided a combination lock and the locker will be the only secure storage location for all year 12 laptops.

Charging facilities will be provided in the senior centre.

They will be able to take their allocated recycled machine home after hours, if they wish.

Privately used machines will not be covered for insurance while on school property.

HELPDESK can only provide limited support to private machines.

The school will provide technical support to private machines to allow access to a range of online resources, that will enable students to successfully complete SACE assessment tasks with ICT components using their private device.

Allocated recycled machines may be taken off site.

A standard school user agreement must be signed by all participants.

To assist planning during wek 7 (yr 11 Transition Days) students will be asked to advise the school of its preference, private use or recycled laptop.

Student’s responsibilities;

Given that students will have responsibility for an expensive electronic device it’s expected that when not in use it will be locked securely in the locker.

School accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage of a private device.

Charging: limited charging will be available to students in the senior study centre. The students are expected to fully supervise this charging process.

YEAR 12 FURNITURE CONSTRUCTION

Mr. Scott Polkinghorne and I have taken the 2 classes this year and we have used the new SACE Board’s program. This was challenging for teachers and students as the work output and expectations are higher than in previous years.

The students have just completed their major piece of furniture that they have designed themselves. The designing and manufacture began in Term 2 after the students completed 2 Skills tasks, a Materials Application task and a Minor Product being a mini cabinet. About 70% of the work assessed in this course is of a practical nature. The Design work is externally moderated and accounts for the other 30%.

Many students who do our Design and Technology courses look forward to year 12

Electronics Peer Mentoring

Throughout weeks 1 and 2 of term 4, students from Mr Brooks’ and Mr Piantadosi’s Year 10/11 Electronics classes have been fortunate enough to be involved in a Peer mentoring program with the School of Electrical and Information Engineering from The University of South Australia - Mawson Lakes campus. In collaboration with Mr David Chan (Project Officer) from UniSA, Henley High School was able to deliver this project based platform, raising confidence and enhancing pathways in Engineering, Science and Technology. Guided by mentors, Koi, Lock and Viet (4th.

Year engineering graduates), students were introduced to programming microcontrollers for the purpose of constructing a reaction game, named Penguin-Pong. Students used specialised software called Great Cow – Basic to develop and exploit the power of the Microchip.

This special project aims to bring together leading edge technology, university and secondary students and teachers to explore Engineering, Science and Information and Communication Technology in practical manner.

We hope to continue this partnership with UniSA – Mawson Lakes campus and run this program on a yearly basis.

Further to our update Term 3 the Advanced Technology Project (ATP) continues to evolve. Professional Development at Henley and also regionally continues this term plus planning to move forward our various strategies/activities.

There are two student activities this term at Henley that have occurred as a result of the ATP support

1. Concept 2 Creation Expo Nov 9th Two trial teams will be presenting at a state expo two science presentations to a very prestigious audience that includes his Excellency, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce, Governor of South Australia. These two year 10 groups presenting are part of a year 10 trial to evaluate new engagement strategies such as C2C. The teams will provide reports in the next newsletter later this term.

2. Gifted and Talented Forum The other student highlight supported by the ATP was a regional Gifted and Talented forum held at the school on Wednesday October 19th, with visiting students from Woodville, Underdale and Seaton. Adelaide University Dean of Science Mr Robert Hill and Associate Professor Karin Barovich, were the two invited guest presenters. The school was very grateful for giving up their time and their support of groups of students. Below are two comments from very detailed reports provided by Victoria Langton and Michael Rescke.

“Last Wednesday on the 19th of October Henley High School hosted the Advanced Technologies Project Gifted Students Forum. 45 Students from Year 8-11 in the Western Area Secondary Network (Henley High School, Seaton High School, Underdale

High School and Woodville High School) attended to meet others with similar interests, to hear about opportunities and to plan future activities in the Maths, Sciences and Technology Areas.

The group was addressed by Professor Robert Hill, who is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Adelaide and a Henley High old scholar. He talked to us about the value of science, probability, and science in the real world. Students were able to complete a practical experiment involving coin tosses, and then plot the results and analyse them. Karin Barovich, Associate Professor at Adelaide University, also spoke about the possibilities for future study. She mentioned the various courses available and which prerequisites were important in high school.“

Victoria Langton “The forum then held a discussion on the issues concerning the attending students. Overall, the main issues identified by the group were their future study options, including finding their dream job and university course, along with several global issues, especially poverty, hunger and climate change.

Before the forum closed, the group conferred about what future events and support they would like. Some of the main ideas that resulted from this discussion were having a forum meeting every term, with interesting guest speakers who could talk about their careers and how to get involved in them. They also wanted to have trips to Adelaide’s universities, where they could be involved in interactive presentations on the courses offered. The final idea that the group decided on was an interschool competition that involves both academic and sporting events.

Every year the School of Mechanical Engineering at Adelaide University holds an exhibition of student projects. Each final year student is involved with a project and participation in the exhibition is an assessment item. The projects undertaken are of extremely high quality, representing the cutting edge of engineering. This year’s exhibition, held in the Goyder Pavilion at the Wayville Showgrounds, showcased 68 exhibits covering a wide range of engineering applications.

Two groups of students from Henley High School visited the exhibition on Thursday October 27th. One was a small group of year 10 students who have been involved in the c2c project and will be presenting their own projects at the c2c Expo on November 9th.

The C2C Program was developed by the NAMIG (Northern Advanced Manufacturing Industry Group) Inc to provide a way for schools and industry to work together to provide students with industry experience and assistance as they create their own C2C projects. C2C introduces a “product life cycle” approach to science, maths and technology education helping schools and students to develop the knowledge, understanding and appreciation of advanced manufacturing processes and possibilities through a problem based learning approach. The Mechanical Engineering Expo provided the opportunity for these students to experience the expo format as well as to view the exhibits. While at the Expo they were involved in an exercise which encouraged them to look closely at the processes involved in project design and display preparation. Working in small groups, the students had to interview those responsible for one of the projects, film the interview and produce a video clip.

The Hall saw a newfound use this week with FREE afterschool fitness sessions run by Miss Rieger and Miss Wright. Approximately 40 female students from Year8-11 took part in a Bootcamp session on Wednesday and approximately 20 staff on Thursday. Participants were put under the pump with a series of exercises involving testing in sit-ups, push-ups, step-ups, lap running around the hall and fun fitness and strength games with weights and ropes. The music was very upbeat and all participants exercised with a smile and had fun with their friends. This program will be running until Week 8 with a variety of fitness classes on offer such as Aerobics, Pilates and Abs Blast. All participants will receive a FREE healthy recipe idea at the end of each session to help promote a healthy balance between exercise and diet, as well as a FREE drink bottle upon signing up.

Hope to see more of you there next week!

Henley High School raised a total of

$6,204.40 in the fight against GLOBAL

HUNGER

Henley High School students and staff joined together and raised a massive $6,204.40 for the people of East Timor.

We would especially like to acknowledge the following students, who were the top 3 fundraisers in each of their year levels:

Yr 10: Olivia May, Carlo Forner, Meg Bourne. Year 9: Melissa Fletcher, Jess Gibbons, Georgie Evangelistis, Jayne Arnold. Year 8: Shona Akbar, Ashlee Gowing and Kealyn Madden.

The top fundraising class was 10 Mitchell 2 and they did an awesome job raising over $720 for Global Hunger.

The money that we raised can feed 155 families of 5 for a month or approx. 13 families of 5 for a year, which is an amazing effort and will make a huge difference in the lives of so many people.

Thank you again to everyone who participated, supported, and gave money to support Global Hunger for the 40 hour famine.

Many blessings,

As their final task for the Personal Learning Plan students in Years 8 & 9 will participate in a Round Table presentation. The Round Table Presentation is an opportunity for students to articulate their learning and goals for the future to their teachers, parents and peers.

Year 8 and 9 students will be involved in Round Table presentations on Monday Week 8 of Term 4. Students will be required to attend school for their Presentation time only. Presentations will begin at 8.45am and run through until 5.00pm. Students have been allocated a 15 minute time slot for their presentation and discussion. Their presentation should go for a minimum of 5 minutes to a maximum 10 minutes.

This is the final assessment task and opportunity to demonstrate further evidence of the level to which the Performance Standards have been met. The presentation will be given to a panel consisting of your child’s Mentor teacher, a school representative (Teacher, Administration, SSO, Western Futures, School Council, Old Scholar), Parent, Caregiver and Peer. Supervision will be provided in the Resource Centre for those students requiring study supervision during the day. Students will be expected at school 10 minutes before their allocated time and are expected to wear full school uniform. Students will be assessed against the Personal Learning Plan Performances Standards. At the end of their presentation students will be required to hand their Portfolio up for Assessment.

These presentations will not only allow students to articulate their learning but also help to prepare students for their entry into Year 10 and completion of the SACE in Senior School.

Our year 12 students attended their Graduation Ceremony last Thursday night and the ceremony was a real celebration of the achievements of all the year 12’s.The contribution that our SLC year 12’s have made and continue to make in the life of the school was a significant part of our Principal, Liz Schneyder’s speech. Special mention was made of Alyssa Puopolo’s wonderful performance of her favourite song at the Whole School Assembly last term. Throughout the ceremony it was evident that the courage and resilience of our students have the capacity to inspire their peers as well as the whole school community. Two of our students received special awards from Lyn Wright who is a former Principal of HHS. Ms Wright had a strong commitment to the establishment and success of the unit in the early years. The Lyn Wright Award for “Commitment to Learning” went to Chris Harrison and the award for “Participation in School Life” went to Carly Lopian. They are very worthy recipients and they received some of the loudest applause of the evening. Congratulations to all our year 12 students. We are very proud of all of them!

SANFL Grand Final 2011

In the school holidays I had the privilege of accompanying 6 of our students who were representing Henley High School at the SANFL Grand Final.

The students were part of the pre-game celebrations to recognise the SANFL involvement in the “Yes I Can Program”. We were given the opportunity to greet the crowd in a lap around Footy Park. As you can see from the photos, the students really enjoyed the experience and were wonderful ambassadors for our school.

Hunter – Henley Sports Exchange

In week 9 of last term approximately 80 students were involved in the third annual Hunter-Henley Sports Exchange with Hunter Sports High School from Newcastle. Hunter Sports run a program very similar to our own Specialist Sport Program and offer elite students a sporting pathway within a schooling environment. They brought over a travelling party of 60 students and 6 staff to compete over two days in 5 sports. Golf, netball and football made their first appearances in the exchange, adding to soccer and basketball, and after the school from Newcastle had taken out the previous two exchanges we were very keen to do well.

The competition was very tight yet played in a very good spirit throughout the entire event. The adding of football gave our students an opportunity to mentor the other school as their program is just starting up with AFL not being as popular as rugby over in the eastern states. In doing so, the Hunter staff and students went away with a greater understanding of the sport and could see the direction they now wanted to go in. The results were neck and neck in both days and the quality on display was extremely high. In the soccer, HSHS snuck through winning both games whilst in the netball we came out on top in the matches played. Basketball ended up one match a piece, meaning it came down to the final rounds of golf played late on the second day. Luckily we were able to remain calm and came away with a narrow victory.

The competition was an outstanding success and gave our students a great opportunity to compete against other high level athletes. Next year sees us off to Newcastle to defend the shield.

to play against highly organised and fast- moving teams. All performed well but were over-run in the second halves conceding some goals from defensive errors. A highlight was meeting Nigel Boegard, a former Hunter student and current Adelaide United player.

Twilight Cup Henley entered an Open Boys’ team in an inaugural Twilight Cup tournament against CBC, Gleeson, Underdale, Blackfriars, St Michael’s. Each team played the others twice in the group stage and the two teams on top played in the final. Henley enjoyed solid campaign and won through to the final against CBC. Again we were narrowly beaten 3-2 in the final despite a fantastic team performance in cold and wet conditions. To sweeten the loss was the fact that Josh Harding was awarded Player of the Tournament and Scott Leonard, Top Goalscorer. This competition enabled the students to play on a weekly basis and against some of the stronger colleges.

Individual Success Adding to the success of former students Ben Garuccio and Stefan Mauk who obtained scholarships with the AIS and representing Australia at the U/17 World Cup in 2011. Ebony Philcox a current year 10 student has been selected to represent Australia in a tour of China (November) and has signed to the Adelaide W-League team for 2011/12 season. Another success has been the selection of Alex Dimas a current year 9 student into the SASI squad for 2012.

I congratulate these individuals on their hard work and success as well as all the students that have made soccer at Henley High School a force in 2011.

Mr Jason Keep, Soccer Coordinator

Specialist Soccer Program 2011 has been another fantastic year with the Specialist Soccer program. Students have benefited from the coaching sessions delivered by Geoff Hargreaves and Cristiano from the FFSA working closely with the students on movement, passing and positioning. We have also conducted units in Fitness, Match analysis, Coaching and Technique Analysis. These units exposed the students to Coaching at the local primary school (Fulham North), using a software program (Dartfish) to analyse their own technique and studying game formations and strategies in a Match analysis task.

Knockout Soccer The school has again achieved success and maintained solid performances in the Statewide Knockout Soccer tournament. The Year 8/9 boys performed well in their early game easily accounting for Windsor Gardens but unfortunately narrowly going down to Charles Campbell 4-3 in a game in which a slow start was the issue. The year 10 team also found the knockout Tournament heavy going with a first round exit to Cardign College despite beating Seaview 10-0 in the round robin round 1 fixture. The Open boys enjoyed a second year of making the finals early rounds against Thomas Moore, Norwood Morialta and CBC. The team then accounted for Prince Alfred and Woodcroft before the finals. Unfortunately the team was narrowly defeated by Rostrevor in the Semi Final. This was a great year with majority on the team eligible to play next year.

In the girls Henley tasted success with both the Open Girls and 8/9 girls winning the Statewide Knockout Tournaments. The Open Girls defeated Woodcroft, Cardign, Hallett

Cove, Marryatville and Trinity to achieve the title. This is also highlighted by the fact that the team has only one Year 12 students in the team. This adds to the girls’ impressive record of winning 4 of the past 5 Open Girls’ titles.

The best performance and team display came from the 8/9 girls this year who defeated St George, Marymount, Hallett Cove to make the finals. The girls easily won the Semi-final and that is when their team spirit and desire to win came through. In the final against Gleeson the girls trailed early 2-0 to a strong and fast Gleeson team. The Henley girls looked inside and found their fighting spirit. The girls levelled the game 2-2 and then suffered injuries reducing the battle to 8 V 11 on the field. Despite this the girls scored again to lead 3-2. Gleeson fought back late to score with a penalty in the last minute to take the game to extra time. Struggling with fatigue from having to cover extra ground due to only playing with 8 on the pitch the girls never looked defeated and in the first minute of extra time won a penalty and converted to achieve a truly remarkable victory against all odds.

Caica Cup Henley soccer teams also participated in the Caica Cup against St Michael’s with the Open girls winning 4-0, 8/9 Girls 3-0, 8/9 boys 2-1 and the Open boys unfortunately being defeated 2-1. These results were instrumental in Henley wining the overall Caica Cup.

Hunter sports Exchange Henley also hosted the Hunter Sports School for 2 games. Both the boys and girls’ teams found the Hunter teams to be too strong. This was a good experience for our students

CLARE VALLEY EXCHANGE

Yr 8, 9 and 10 Specialist Sport Netball Students travelled to the Clare Valley during Week 3 of Term 3 for the third exchange with Clare High School. The exchange was an excellent opportunity for the school to further develop the school’s Specialist Netball Program and to continue to form a bond with Clare High School.

Our program for the exchange was busy and involved a Specialist Coaching Session on our first day in which girls from both schools participated. On our second day was game day. We had a Year 8, 9 and 10 team, who all played a full match each and ended the day with a champions match. All games were extremely even which made it a very interesting and exciting day. The results: Yr 8 = Henley def Clare (but we lost due to injury and year nine have to fill in). Yr 9 =

Clare def Henley. Yr 10 = Henley def Clare. This meant overall Clare Valley won the Champions Trophy. The last match of the day was the Champions Match which was the best players selected from all 3 teams. Henley won this game very convincingly and won the All Stars Trophy.

In the evening we had dinner together which was an excellent way to finish the exchange. On our way home on Friday we visited a dairy farm and had some homemade scones made by the farmers wives for morning tea. Once again the exchange was a huge success and the girls who represented us were all wonderful ambassadors for our school.

8/9 Girls team with coach Elvis Dejanovic, Sarae Morella, Jami Wright, Tijana Dejanovic, Hannah Parr, Rhiannon Mullan, Hannah Leonard, Emily Carroll, Demity Bennett, Alicia Ianuzzi, Celeste Venditto, and Coach MS Wright.

Open Girls with players Emily Carroll, Courtney Dowling, Demity Ben-nett, Tess Fraser, Taryn Meth, Caitlin Carroll, Patty van Duijn, Marlee-Rose Chitty, Epril Nossent, Tijana dejanovic, Hannah Parr, Rhiannon Mullan, Ebony Philcox and Sarae Morella and Coach Ms Rieger.

The total tally of vouchers collected this year was a whopping 10,944. With these vouchers Coles is giving the school a 6x6 me-tre parachute for the SLC, 5 footballs, 15 Basketballs and two dozen tennis balls for students to use during their recess and lunch breaks. The sports equipment will be divided up and between classes.

So to all of you who helped the school collect vouchers we say....

Over the last 12 weeks Henley High School participated in the ‘Coles Sports for Schools 2011 Program’. During this time the community collected vouchers from Coles Supermarkets and brought them into the school. The idea of the program is that Coles is offering the school free sports equipment in exchange for vouchers collected, with the emphasis being the more vouchers the more sports equipment.
