Small Town TreasuresBy Mary Chavoustie
Highway 290 to Austin is a busy thoroughfare the first two weekends ofApril and October as antique lovers reconnect with their favorite dealers.Smart shoppers know the back roads and which small towns offer greatfinds every week of the year.
For over 50 years, Frazier’s in Hempstead has satisfied yearnings foreverything concrete. Elegant fountains to whimsical pigs are spread acrosseight acres, making it hard to choose a favorite.
Burton is famous for it’s annual Cotton Gin Festival but owner/designerHeidi Matthies-Jaster has her own following with The Nesting Company.Customers can select the perfect nature-themed gift to go with one ofMatthies-Jaster’s fresh floral arrangements.
The magnificent Festival Concert Hall at the Round Top Festival Instituteis acclaimed as one of the world’s leading performance and learning cen-ters for music. The 200+ acre venue is equally a delight for plant loverswith its ten gardens, exhibiting a collection of botanical specimens fromaround the world.
Round Top’s Henkel Square is experiencing a rebirth, thanks to Austin-based MLD Holdings. Enhancements to existing buildings, dating fromthe 1830s to 1900, will bring a welcoming village atmosphere to thetown. Copper Shade Tree will share the new address with the works ofover 90 Texas artisans, as will artist Beth Anderson, famous for her signa-ture Painted Churches. Across the street, Bybee Square remains home togreat pizza, cool music and one-of-a-kind shops. For example, at TheGallery at Round Top, you’ll find a wide variety of artworks. At Comforts, check out the selection of decorative doorknockers and colorfully pat-terned lamps, just to name a few.
“Kitchy and vibrant” best describes Carmine’s Texas Trash and Treasures.Richard and Linda Hamilton repurpose 50- to 100-year-old roofing tinfrom old tobacco barns to create treasures that brighten the home and gar-den. Next door, artist Diane Tovey uses old-world techniques at her cus-tom stained glass and mosaic art studio, The Glass Anvil.
Hunting SeasonAntlers and animal hides aren’t just for the gun-toting guys in camouflage – thefall is full of antiques events from here to the hill country.
We’ve scoped out the best antiques events around and gathered all the goodsfor avid antiquers and nervous newbies. Here’s a chronological list of what’s notto be missed, but please note that there are dozens of additional shows this fall.
