RICKY JOINESAssistant Coach

Ricky Joines is in his twelfth sea-son as an assistant with the Catawbawomen’s basketball team. He is a2002 Catawba graduate with a degreein physical education and recreation.He also serves as an assistant to theAthletic Director at Catawba and isassistant director of the Cat-U Basketball Camps.

Joines came to Catawba after serving as head coach of thejunior varsity girls basketball team at West Wilkes HighSchool. During those three years he also assisted with thegirls varsity program. In 1990-91, he assisted with the boysvarsity team that won the Northwest 2A Conference title.Joines earned an associate arts degree in 1996 at WilkesCommunity College where he played basketball for two seasons.

He resides in Salisbury.

Angie Morton - Head Coach

Angie Morton beginsher eighth seasonat the helm of

the Catawba Collegewomen’s basketball pro-gram. Catawba has com-piled a 111-89 mark in herprevious seasons.

In her first season, sheled Catawba to a 22-9record and to both theSouth Atlantic conferenceregular-season and tourna-ment titles. The LadyIndians also qualified forthe NCAA II Regional. Morton, a 1984 Catawba graduate,returned to her alma mater after serving as head coach atPfeiffer University for seven seasons where she compiled a98-91 record.

During her seven years at Pfeiffer, Morton guided theLady Falcons to a pair of Carolinas-Virginia Conference titlesand the school’s first NCAA II playoff berth in 2002-03. Theback-to-back 20 win campaigns, including a 24-5 mark in2002-03, earned Morton consecutive CVAC Coach of the Yearhonors. Morton was also a CVAC Coach of the Year in soft-

ball in 2000 as she led Pfeiffer to the league crown. Prior to her stint at Pfeiffer, Morton was the girls head

coach at West Stanly High School for eight years. She guid-ed the school to playoff appearances in all eight seasons andwas RRC Coach of the Year in 1992. She also served as coachat Locust Elementary School and Knox Middle School.

Graduating from Catawba in 1984, Morton earned a bach-elor of arts degree in elementary education. At Catawba asAngie Crayton, she earned 10 letters, playing basketball, soft-ball and field hockey. In basketball, Morton played in 86games and averaged 5.5points, netting a careerhigh 26 in a loss toWingate as a senior.She added 163rebounds and 107assists. Morton was a.367 career hitter insoftball with nine homeruns and 74 RBI.

Morton resides inAlbemarle with her hus-band, Randy. They havefour children, Matt,Keri, Krista and Tad.

DORTHELL LITTLEAssistant Coach

Dorthell Little begins her eighthseason as an assistant coach with theCatawba women’s basketball pro-gram. She is a 2003 graduate ofCatawba, earning a bachelor of sci-ence degree in business.

Little played three seasons withthe Lady Indians after transferring from Armstrong Atlantic.She was a two-time All-South Atlantic Conference selectionand earned all-region honors as a junior. Little ranks thirdall-time with 95 blocked shots and fourth with 223 steals.

Over her four collegiate seasons, Little scored 1,132 pointswith 948 coming in three years at Catawba. She ranks ninthall-time at Catawba with 677 rebounds. Her career shootingpercentage of 57% is second best all-time. Little was a stand-out at Richmond Senior High School, helping the Raiders tothree conference titles.

She resides in Salisbury.

Abernethy Physical Education Center

The Julius W. Abernethy Physical Education Center, home of Catawba’s basketball teams, is one of the finest on-campus athleticfacilities in the state of North Carolina. It was named after the late Julius W. Abernethy of Newton, N.C., and was dedicated onSeptember 26, 1970. Basketball games are played in the center’s Goodman Gymnasium, named in honor of Enoch A. Goodman ofSalisbury. The Lady Indians are 209-75 (73.6%) at home since beginning SAC competition in 1989-90. In October of 2002, the floorwas named in honor of former men’s basketball coach, Sam Moir.

The building, which cost more than $1.8 million to build, has a seating capacity of 3,500 for basketball, and now has a value ofabout $5 million. A beautiful maple hardwood playing surface was installed in December 1990. The facility is also used extensive-ly for intercollegiate volleyball, student activities, civic events, concerts and various athletic camps during the summer months.

The College’s Athletic and Physical Education offices, as well as classrooms, are located on the upper level. Situated on the lowerlevel is the Allen S. Johnson Jr. Swimming Pool, three racquetball courts, the Meyer Auxiliary Gym complete with an indoor bat-ting cage, various student and athletic dressing accommodations, and the Lofland Strength Training Center.

Athletic Training

CHRISTY ARMSTRONGChristy Armstrong arrived at

Catawba College in 2007 as assistantathletic trainer and instructor. She pro-vides the medical coverage for Men’s andWomen’s Cross Country, Men’s andWomen’s Golf, Men’s and Women’sTennis, Men’s and Women’s Basketballand Cheerleading. Armstrong also trav-els with both basketball teams.

Along with head athletic trainerRobert Casmus, Armstrong and fellow

assistant athletic trainers Rob Dingle, Michael Eden and TravisArmstrong, instruct approximately 20 student athletic training stu-dents in the various educational components of athletic training. Theyalso supervise the students in the clinical aspects as they care for

Catawba’s athletes.Armstrong earned a mater’s degree in sports health care from A.T.

Still University, The Arizona School of Health Sciences in Mesa,Arizona in 2007. While in Arizona, Armstrong worked one year as agraduate assistant for Mesquite High School, the largest 5A high schoolin Arizona. She also worked one year as a graduate assistant for GrandCanyon University, a NCAA Divison II college in Phoenix.

In 2005, Armstrong earned a bachelor’s degree in athletic trainingand graduated cum laude from The University of North Carolina atCharlotte. While at UNC Charlotte, she completed a variety of intern-ships in athletic training and orthopedic clinical settings. Armstrongwon the Dr. Harvey F. Murphy academic excellence award, given to theathletic training student with the highest GPA.

Armstrong and her husband, Travis, who is also an assistant ath-letic trainer at Catawba, reside in Salisbury.
