• Habitat for Humanity is a global, non-for-profit organization

seeking to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness

from the world. In India, Habitat for Humanity has built,

repaired and renovated more than 35,000 houses across 17

states.

• Habitat for Humanity has built 400,000 houses helping 2

million families live in decent homes.

• Habitat India has supported over 13,000 families affected

by the Tsunami, besides constructing around 300 houses

for families who lost their homes due to the floods in 2005

(Mahad & Kalyan in Maharashtra) and in 2008 (Bihar).

• HFH India operates through Resource Centres in Mumbai,

New Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai.

PROPOSAL – A BIKE EXPEDITION TO BUILD BACK BETTER• Habitat for Humanity India has partnered with Convoy Control Club led by Mr. Vinod Rawat;

a Jaipur Foot user on a unique motorbike expedition from Mumbai to Leh to help families

in need of shelter. The Club provides opportunities to differently abled individuals who

dare to challenge their physical disability , showcase their talents and demonstrate their

indomitable spirit. Against all odds, 5 riders from the club have come together to support

this project.

• The 5 riders will raise money to build 1 house with each house costing

Rs.300000/- for families belonging to the low income strata. The riders hope to spread

the message that all adversity can be conquered despite the odds.

• The Leh Disaster Response Project will help in rebuilding 24 homes which were completely

destroyed in the flood and mudslides in Leh, Ladakh last year. With support, the project

will provide these families safe, environmentally friendly, culturally relevant and disaster

resistant shelters. These new houses will enable the families to survive the extreme cold

weather they are faced with each winter.

• The 5 riders will ride on to Khardung La “ the world’s highest motorable pass” to

dispel stereotypes of being dependent and motivate other differently abled to explore

their own strengths and for the general public to recognize them as an equal counterpart.

• At Leh, the final stop, the 5 riders will hoist the Tri-colour on 15th August and build with the

families they have helped support.

• Each rider has pledged to raise Rs.300000/- to help build back better for a

THE RIDER


VINOD RAWAT

Vinod Rawat born and brought up in Mumbai. He belongs to a middle class family. At the age of six, on his way back from school he met with a truck accident. Due to lack of sufficient finances for the treatment the doctors had to amputate his left leg below the knee. Since then he has been moving with the help of crutches till he turned 22. During these years he faced rejection from his neighbors and friends. As a child Vinod was very active in sports and managed to play cricket with the help of his crutches. In 1994 he played cricket for the Mumbai Disabled Team, All India Institute of Physically Challenged. He received his artificial leg from Bhagwan Mahaveer Vikalang Sahayata Samiti, Jaipur Foot. With the help of Jaipur Foot he was able to lead a normal life. He worked for an NGO, as a counselor for street children, drug addicts and children of Commercial Sex Workers. Gradually he learnt to ride bicycles, motorbike & swimming. Vinod has participated in the 8th Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and Sunfeast World 10 K Marathon in Bangalore. He ran the half Marathon twice in Mumbai. In 2010, he trekked Darba Top, 18500 ft in Himalaya. For the last eight years he is been regularly participating in Motorbike & car races like Autocross, Drag race, Rallies and also trekking the Sahayadri range. He was an MTV Roadie in the MTV Roadies Season II. He aspires to climb Mount Everest in the near future.Vinod is working in the finance sector as a Sales Executive.

THE RIDER

MANOJ KUMAR

Manoj Kumar, aged 37, is a resident of Ranchi, Jharkhand. His legs were affected by gangrene after an accident. As a result both his legs had to be amputated below the knee. He received an artificial leg from Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS). He practiced to ride a two-wheeler with his amputated leg. Farming was Manoj’s only source of income before the accident. Being a father of three he had to find other means to earn a livelihood. Today Manoj goes on his bike in the nearby forests to collect firewood. Selling the firewood is his source of income. He has a desire to ride on his motorbike to distant places.

THE RIDER

SUBHASH CHIKANE

Subhash, aged 49, is a resident of Kalyan, Mumbai. He was born with deformity in his left hand. As a child he was never ashamed of his deformity, instead he actively participated in various sport activities like swimming, high jump, long jump, cycling and cricket. At the age of 12, he took great interest in cricket and developed his skills. He got an opportunity to play for Tata Power Company when he was 20.On seeing his performance on the field, he was offered a job at Tata Power. In 1987 he played for All India Institute of Physically Challenged and later became the National Team captain. In his captainship he won two matches out of four. In 2002, he was the Man of the Match & Man of the Series in an International match for the physically challenged. For the last 24 years he rides motorbikes overcoming his deformity. Subhash is married and has four children.

THE RIDER

DANNY VITTHAL

Danny, aged 32, is a resident of Jaipur city. Due to responsibilities at home, he started working as a child and never got a chance to attend school. To earn an income, he sold dry fruits in the train. One tiring afternoon he was selling dry fruits on an outbound train from Delhi. An argument broke out between a group of youngsters and Danny on the train. In a fit one of them pushed Danny out of the moving train. At the age of 17 he lost his left leg below the knee.He got an artificial leg from Bhagwan Mahavir Vikalang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS) at Jaipur, who also supported him for his livelihood. Today Danny is working for BMVSS. He has always been hardworking. Though he lost his leg, he still continues running, cycling and riding. He actively participates in 100 meter races, Javelin Throw and discuss throw.Danny is married and has three children.

THE RIDER

SANTOSH G DHUMAL

Santosh , aged 34, is a resident of Wadala, Mumbai. At the age of two he was affected by Polio in his left leg. He was active in running, Kabbadi & swimming in his school. He is passionate about riding and driving. He bagged a bronze medal in the National power lifting championship for Handicap in 2010. He runs his own travel business. He is married with three children.
