IN BLOOM SUCCESSThis year saw more successes for the area both in the local Bath in Bloom Competition and South West in Bloom.

Bath in Bloom Local Awards

Bath in Bloom is a local competition, organised by Bath and North East Somerset Council and the Bath in Bloom Committee.

It is open to all residents, businesses, schools, institutions or

community groups within the boundary of Bath & North East Somerset.

Its aim is to encourage the community to take a pride in Bath & North East Somerset, making it attractive with flowers, landscaping or an environmental project.

The Awards were presented at the Guildhall in Bath on Monday 23rd August by the Chairman of the Council, Cllr Sarah Bevan and the Mayor of Bath Cllr Shaun McGall.

South West in Bloom

South West in Bloom is part of Britain in Bloom and organised by the Royal Horticultural Society. Towns compete in different categories depending on population size on a regional basis. The judges choose winners of the categories to go through to the Britain in Bloom final and compete with towns of similar size on a national basis.

Midsomer Norton and Radstock have been entering the competition since 2005 and 2006 respectively. Each year, a different town plays host to the awards ceremony. This year, they took place in the Assembly Rooms in Bath on 16th September.

YourNews & Reviews

St Johns awardsAt the start of the new academic year we gained two prestigious national awards. We were awarded the Basic Skills Quality Mark for the fourth time. The award celebrates the successes and attainment of children in literacy and numeracy. The award is valid for 3 years and covers ten elements which highlight good practice within the area of basic skills.

The school has also been awarded the InternationalSchool Award for the third time, recognising the school’s outstanding provision and work carried out in terms of the global community. At St John’s we work hard to include an awareness of international issues in the pupils lessons. The school has forged several links with schools around the world and these include Indonesia, Tanzania, Ghana and France. We also have links with a school in Newport, Gwent. We have shared a particular focus this year to demonstrate how the whole school and local community can be involved in fostering a greater understanding of the wider world.

The staff and children at Trinity Primary School in Radstock worked exceptionally hard to make their school grounds burst with colour and variety for the judges at this year’s Bath in Bloom competition. The gardening club work hard to grow their own fruit and vegetables in their garden and these are used by the children in cookery at school and also purchased by parents. The grounds of the school show cased each classes creativity and exciting approach to the display of fl owers and plants. These could be found in wheel barrows decorated as dinosaurs, hanging baskets, in brick displays and decorated planters. The Bath in Bloom judges were so impressed that they awarded a GOLD to the Trinity team. South West in Bloom also awarded the team ‘outstanding’.

What a surprise it was for the children of the gardening club at St Mary’s Primary school in Writhlington when they were awarded with silver at Bath in Bloom. The gardening club is run by Kim Buchan who is also the site supervisor for the school. Kim says ‘ the pupils love it and it has given them all a chance to get outside and appreciate their surroundings. The children have developed since the beginning of the project and the commitment to making the school environment look amazing and developing pride in their school and surroundings.’St Mary’s decided that it would be great to open the challenge up as a community project and parents and local people all got involved in helping the school with its vision.Cathy Lampert, deputy head said ‘ We are a Eco friendly school and we compost all food waste, save energy and soon we will be growing and cooking our own food and the children will be able to enjoy the food they have grown.’St Mary’s Primary school have set themselves even more goals that include new allotments, maintaining their beautiful gardens, growing many plants and bulbs to sell, developing their conservation area and of course entering the Bath in Bloom and South West in Bloom competitions in 2011.

They had to choose a recipe from one of the 3 supplied. Cook the meal at home and then take photographs of the meal and bring them into school where the school displayed them for all to see. The judges then visited each school and invited families along to the Guildhall where the winners were presented with their prizes.Alex and Lydia won a huge £250 of shopping vouchers for their family with their fantastic meal, well done to you both and I am sure you will be allowed a few treats now!

Witch’s HatHalloween wouldn’t be Halloween without a witch’s hat to wear - and this one is quickly made with a piece of black card. Of course you can add embellishments of all sorts, or adapt the craft to make a wizard’s hat (with a bigger brim and perhaps using purple card).

You will need:A large sheet of black cardSticky tape Green crepe paper (or yellow or black wool/yarn)A piece of string and a pencil to draw your arc - optional

Instructions:Draw an arc, either freehand or using your pencil and string, from one corner of the black card to part way along the opposite long side, to form a quarter of a circle. Cut along the line. Roll this quarter circle into a cone big enough to fi t on the witch’s head and tape together.Stand the hat on the remaining card and draw around the base (circle 1). Decide on the width of the brim you would like, and draw another bigger circle around circle 1 to make the brim (circle 2). Cut out circle 2.Draw a third circle (circle 3) about 2cm (1 inch) inside circle 1. Cut along this line.Cut small slits at approximately 2cm (1 inch) intervals between circle 3 and circle 1 to form fl aps. Crease them along the line of circle 1. Now stand the cone onto the brim, and fold the fl aps up inside the hat, taping them in place.Cut the crepe paper into strips and tape these inside the hat so that they hang down to form hair.

Skeleton MobileMake this gorgeous skeleton out of your old cardboard boxes - fun and recycling all in one!

You will need:A collection of boxes and cardboard tubesBlack and white paint¾ inch thick elasticStrong sticky tape or glue

Handprint And Footprint GhostsThese handprint and footprint ghosts are so effective and, if you remember to date them, a great way of ‘capturing’ a memory of your child. They make great invitations for a Halloween party, too!

You will need:Black paperWhite paintBlack pen

Instructions:Print a white handprint onto the black paper, keeping your fi ngers together. Leave some space and print a white footprint. When the paint is dry, draw on some ghostly faces. The fi ngers/toes form the bottom of your ghost.Cut out the ghosts, leaving a thin rim of black paper around the edge. Why not punch a hole through the top, tie through some string and hang them as decorations this Halloween?

Paper Plate Spider WebThis paper plate spider web is just the thing when you have a pompom spider which needs a spooky perch! Younger children in particular will enjoy the lacing activity

You will need:A paper plateBlack paintString or woolHole punch

Instructions:Paint the back of the plate black and leave to dry, then cut out the middle of the plate. Punch holes evenly all around the edge. Cut a length of wool. Tie to one of the holes and then weave through others to make a pattern. When you are close to the end, tie to a hole and cut of the excess. Tie on a new piece of wool and repeat until you are happy with your web. It is easier to use several smaller pieces of wool so the ends will not fray.

Orange Jelly PumpkinsOur orange jelly pumpkins are a Halloween craft which you can eat! Adult supervision required.

You will need:OrangesJelly (jello) - we used blackcurrantA sharp knife (and an adult)

Instructions:Cut off the top of the oranges, and scoop the middle. Mix up your jelly mix following the instructions on the packet. Pour carefully into the orange shells. Leave in the fridge to set.Using a sharp knife, carefully cut out a face. Yum!

pompom spiderDon’t you love this funny spider? Despite his googly eyes, I’m not sure I’d like to meet him in the dark on Halloween! These pompom spiders can be hung around your room or simply left on windowsills, mantelpieces and nooks and crannies to surprise and delight!

You will need:2 black pipe cleaners (chenille stems)A black pompomA pair of wiggle eyesGlue

Instructions:Cut the two pipe cleaners in half. Lay the four halves of pipe cleaner side by side, then twist them together in the middle.Glue the pompom to the middle of the pipe cleaners.Stick the eyes to the pompom. When you are sure the glue is dry, bend the pipe cleaners so your spider’s legs are spread out. Now put him on display!

Science!

Materials you will need:• Food Colouring• Liquid Dish Soap• Shallow Pan/Dish• Whole Milk (Room Temperature)

Steps:1. Pour some milk into the pan.

Allow the milk to come to room temperature.2. Add a few drops of different coloured food colouring into

the pan of milk.3. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap into the pan of milk.4. Watch to see what happens.

The fat in the milk is broken down by the liquid soap. This causes the food colouring to swirl and make some really neat designs.

Swirled Milk

Materials you will need:• Water• Blotting paper (letter size or smaller) • Bread Baking tin (small) or a dish with an edge • 4-8 different coloured felt tip pens• Tape

This is a colour changing experiment!

Steps:1. Line up your blotting paper and the lids of the marker pens

which you will use this experiment. 2. Leaving around half a inch from the bottom of the blotting paper

press each color marker pen down on the blotting paper gently so a dot has formed.

3. Tape your blotting paper to the top of your baking tin making surethere is a bit of space left at the bottom so you can pour some water in. Leave about half an inch from the bottom edge of the tin.

4. Slowly pour in some water until it just reaches the bottom of theblotting paper - making sure the colored markings (dots) do not dip into the water.

5. Watch to see what happens to all the colours as the water is beingabsorbed by the blotting paper.

6. Keep an eye on the circles you coloured to see what happens as the water travels up the blotting paper and reaches your markings.

How many different colours can you see? You may think your marker is green, but when you see the break down you can actually see the different colors which make up the colour green. Which colour marker has the most colours in it?This is also called Chromatography. Chromatography is to seperate the components of a mixture or the separation of mixtures.

Easy Chicken Quesadillas

Ingredients

8 tortillas1 chicken breast (or chicken leftovers)1 tablespoon oilButter or more oil for frying1 package taco seasoning mix1 can pinto beans, rinsed and drained1 small package of Mexican rice cooked (or leftover rice)2 cups shredded (grated) cheese - we use CheddarAny vegetables your children like - red pepper, broccoli etcTo serve:Sour creamChopped spring onions

Heat the oil in a large frying pan (skillet) and add the chicken. Sprinkle over the taco seasoning mix and add water according to the package directions. Cook for a few minutes until the chicken is warmed through and the sauce is well blended and slightly thickened. You can either cook your quesadillas on an electric griddle or on a large clean frying pan or griddle on the hob. Turn on the heat and add a small amount of butter or oil to the griddle. Place a tortilla into the griddle and top with chicken, beans, rice and cheese. Don’t put too much fi lling on, and keep it in the middle of the tortilla or you will end up with an oozy mess at the next stage! Cover with a second tortilla. Fry gently until browned on the bottom, and then carefully fl ip to the other side and continue to fry, every so often pressing the tortilla together with a spatula. Slide out of the pan and slice into triangles. Serve with sour cream and onions.

In today’s busy world, many parents have lost the art of telling their stories to their children. Here are some reasons why these stories are so benefi cial; to all of you.

1. Use them to teach lessons about life. Stories will stimulate conversations more effectively. There are a lot of issues happening for your children these days, and stories give them a chance to refl ect on them.

2. Stories connect your children with previous generations. In a society which seems to have families spread out all over, it’s vital they have ways to feel connected to their extended families.

3. Stories stimulate imagination. One of the best ways to prepare your children for the world is to engage them in vivid stories which stir their imagination. Children who are exposed to these kinds of stories will be the creative problem-solvers of the future.

4. Children who are exposed to stories will continue the tradition with their own families. Knowing your family traditions, and stories, will be carried on by future generations is very comforting, as well as a great benefi t for your children’s children.

5. Stories can encourage your children when they’re discouraged. Childhood can get pretty discouraging sometimes. Children are encouraged when they know Mum or Dad have experienced the same kinds of things, and they’ve survived.6. Telling your stories helps you remember your own childhood. Talking about your childhood is a great way for you to remember and refl ect on what was important about your past.

7. Telling stories helps to create depth and soul. In a TV and media-crazy culture, telling stories can capture and hold attention, and convey real meaning.

8. Telling stories to your children tells them they’re worth the time. Is there anything more important than showing them you want to spend intimate time with them? They’ll remember it forever.

9. Telling stories is a great chance to convey your values. Your children will be getting quite a few messages from their friends, and from popular culture. Stories are a great opportunity to sneak in a few of your cherished values for your family to hear.

10. Well-crafted stories create a wonderful mind-set for your children before they fall asleep. Children will fall asleep faster, and with healthier images, when you tell them your stories.

Creating a ritual of telling your stories will create a lifetime of memories for your children. It will deepen your relationship, and show them how much you care.

News from MIDSOMER NORTON KUMON STUDY CENTRE:The Study Centre, which runs from Somervale School on Mondays and Wednesdays 3.30 - 5.45pm, continues to thrive as more families take the opportunity to either try the Kumon method through our Free Trial, or come in on recommendation from the success of existing students. The Centre is run by Janet Russell, and offers a personalised learning programme to suit the needs of all ages and abilities, from 4 to 19 years of age. We even have some adult learners, who wished to revisit either Maths or English skills. It’s never too late to learn!

What is Kumon? It started over 50 years ago in Japan, with a move towards teaching children to become independent learners by learning through example and the practice of basic skills. To develop potential, a student must study work they don’t already know and the longer a student studies new work, the more they develop self-learning skills, and the greater their potential becomes.

How does it work? Kumon allows study skills to develop, by completing a little work every day and this in turn allows development of ability, not just academic ability. These become life skills and enable the student to overcome challenges not only at school or work, but in life. The student’s Kumon journey begins with familiar work, (the Easy Start) so a child quickly gains confi dence and works with ease. Everyone likes to start a new venture in their ‘comfort zone’. The discovery stage introduces the student to new work, learning from examples and applying their new found knowledge to new problems. They also learn from corrections, which play a hugely important role in the learning process. The enrichment stage develops ownership of learning, the enjoyment of learning new topics and an ‘I can’ attitude.

Janet says: “Over 50% of our students achieve their Bronze ASR award (Advanced Student Roll) in their fi rst year of study. We also have a high number of students who have just achieved their Silver Awards. These awards recognise students have achieved the Discovery Stage of learning. Many local schools support the Kumon Way and our work dovetails into National Curriculum.”

Why not take the opportunity to fi nd out for yourself? Janet is offering a FREE TRIAL period, enabling students to trial the method for two weeks, between 21st August and 20th October. If you are interested in enrolling for either the Free Trial, or Kumon Study, give her a ring on 01761 453720 or email her at [email protected] to discuss your needs.

The Ice Bear Jackie MorrisBack in a time when people and animals lived together in harmony, a bear-child is stolen away from his mother. A hunter and his wife fi nd the child and, wrapping him in sealskin, they sing him songs of the ice, the wind and the great white bears. One day the child wanders off and a bear comes to take him back to his mother. But by now the hunter is on the trail, determined to kill the creature that has taken his child! Set in the pristine polar regions of the Arctic, Jackie Morris’s beautiful story reminds us we are caretakers of these wild creatures and our actions directly affect their future.

Honey is a Sweet Treat for Tired Skin

Recipes courtesy of the The National Honey Board. Visit www.honey.com for more tips on how honey can sweeten your daily routine.

Winter is rough on skin. There’s the normal double whammy of freezing temperatures and drying winter winds that take a heavy toll on skin’s natural moisture content. This year, typically exhausted bank accounts will be under even closer scrutiny, placing a rejuvenating trip to the spa out of reach for many.Yet there are a few simple and affordable things you can do for your skin at home that mimic those costly spa treatments. The basis of these treatments is 100 percent pure and natural honey. Honey is so effective in beauty treatments because it’s a humectant, which means it helps to attract and retain moisture. As the National Honey Board notes, honey is used as an all-natural moisturizing ingredient in many skin and hair-care products. Honey also acts as an anti-irritant, making it suitable for sensitive skin. Here are some economical ways to make honey an essential part of your home beauty regimen.

Cucumber Honey Eye Nourisher(Makes 4 treatments)Ingredients:1 tablespoon aloe vera gel 2 teaspoons cucumber, peeled with seeds removed 1/2 teaspoon chamomile tea 1/2 teaspoon honey Directions:Steep chamomile tea in boiling water. Set aside to cool. In food processor or blender, combine cucumber, aloe vera and honey. Blend on low setting. Add chamomile tea. Blend until smooth. Apply gently under eyes using ring fi nger. Store in glass dish covered with plastic wrap in refrigerator for up to one week. Best applied chilled.

Hair ShineIngredients:1 teaspoon honey 4 cups warm water Squeeze of lemon (for blondes) Directions:Stir honey into warm water. Blondes may wish to add a squeeze of lemon. After shampooing, pour mixture through hair. Do not rinse out. Dry as normal.Honey and Oat ExfoliantIngredients:1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup oatmeal Directions:Mix and smooth over face. Massage and leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Moisture MaskIngredients:2 tablespoons honey 2 teaspoons milk Directions:Mix honey with milk. Smooth over face and throat. Leave on for 10 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

PETS

CORNER

My pet human asked me to tell you all about me and how I live.

I am a Mexican red knee tarantula and I live in a tank in my human’s house which has some peat on the bottom and also some wood and bark that I can use as a retreat. I come from South America where it is warm and moist so it is very important that my human keeps my tank at 70 – 80 degrees.

For my dinner, every 2 to 3 days, I like to eat crickets and other large insects that are still alive and sometimes on special occasions I might get a pinkymouse! My human keeps water in my tank for me to drink too.

For me to grow I have to molt, this is when I roll onto my back and shed the old exoskeleton (skin) and producing a new one. This can sometimes take up to a week.I can live up to 20 years so I really am a part of my humans family.

My human says he likes having me as a pet as I am very easy to look after. I don’t like being touched or moved so I am quite happy to stay in my home as long as the humidity and temperature is right for me.

A rainy day can be fun, with these indoor activities

Body LanguageDirections:Why are your kids rubbing their stomachs and tapping their heads? Because they’re speaking in a secret code (they’re actually concurring that it’s time for an ice-cream break). You can get in on the action, too, by helping your children devise a code language that can involve words, hand signs, and various types of body language. Start off simple, with a substitute for “yes” and “no.” Perhaps patting the head means “yes” and pointing to the nose means “no.” Ask a series of yes/no questions, such as, “Is your name Madeline?” “Do you like chocolate?” “Do we live on earth?” Rattle off the questions as quickly as you can, seeing if your kids can keep the hand signals straight. Next, up the challenge by substituting body language for common words. For instance, pointing to an elbow might mean “table,” and waving twice might mean “book.” So you might say, “Please pass the green [wave twice] on the [point to elbow].” See how many substitutions you and your kids can devise. When you’re done, you may be able to have a complete conversation without opening your mouths!

Touch TwisterDirections:Identify body parts with your child: knees, elbows, neck, fi ngers, toes, wrist, ankles, and nose. Choose a part and then try to touch another body part with it; hand to heel, nose to knee, or heel to bottom. Do this activity together. Touch a body part of yours with one of your child’s; head to back, elbow to elbow, ear to shoulder. Enjoy the touching, twisting, and learning.

Talent ShowDirections:Everybody in the family has to participate, even the family pet! If you have a small family, invite friends or relatives to participate. Talent comes in many forms: read a poem, play an instrument, do a dance, tell a joke, do a charade, act out an event from your week, sing a song, tell a personal story, stand on your head. Do anything you want to express yourself. Give everyone a few weeks notice to get their acts together. Someone might want to write a program when all the acts have been decided. Whoever organizes the show is in charge of refreshments to eat between acts.

Friendly professional instruction. Both Male and Female.
