Female Terminology

Fallopian Tubes- Trumpet shaped tubes in which the egg moves from the ovary to the uterus

Ligaments- Fibrous connective tissue that connects the fallopian tubes to the ovaries

Ovaries- Female sex glands. The eggs are stored there and hormones such as estrogen is secreted there as well.

Uterus- Large pear shaped strong elastic organ that holds the baby during pregnancy

Inner Labia– Inner layer of skin at the opening of the vagina, it covers the clitoris and protects against bacteria entering the reproductive system

Hymen—thin membrane that stretches across the vaginal opening. It is present at birth, but soon broken in modern day society.

Perineum- Small area of skin between the anus and the vaginal opening. This area is surgical cut to allow the fetus to pass through during child birth.

Vaginal opening- Connects the vagina to the outside of the body

Urethra- very short tube leading from the bladder to the outside of the body. Bladder infections are common among females.

Clitoris- A small area of tissue on the front of the vaginal opening, the only known function is sexual arousal

Outer Labia- Outer fold of skin around the vaginal opening, it provided protection from bacteria entering the reproductive system.

Endometrium- Inner lining of the uterus, rich in blood vessels. It provided nutrients for the fetus. It pulls away and it expelled during menstruation.

The Perineum is sometimes cut during child birth to prevent tearing of the tissue, it is called an episotomy

Bartholin Glands– Glands that provide lubrication during sexual arousal

Vagina- (Birth canal) Elastic passageway to the uterus. The vagina expands for child birth and for penis insertion during intercourse.

Cervix-Neck of the uterus. The cervix is critical during child birth, it must dilate10 cms to allow the fetus to travel out of the birth canal. The cervix is also tested for cancer cells during a PAP smear test done yearly on sexual active females or females over the age of 18.

Female Physiology

Erection- Involuntary process that occurs when the clitoris fills with blood as a result of stimulation to the sensory nerves in the clitoris.(See the clitoris)

Orgasm– Release of neuro-muscular tension through contractions of the clitoris.
