3-1. INTRODUCTION.

3-2. The Modela 331.4 aad 332A DtstortionAnalyzers have two mcdes of operation. the distortion mode and the voltmetcr mode. Total harmonic distortion mca- surements from 5 cps to 600 Kc are possible and harmonice are indlcated up to 3 Mc when thc instru-. mente are used in the dlstortion mode. Dietortlon measurement accuracy 1s determined by the ovcrall effect of harmonic Irequency meaeurement accuracy, eliminatlon chrtracterletics, dlstortion introduced by the Instrument, and meter accuracy (refer to Table 1-1, Specificatlons). In the voltmeter mode. the translstorized voltmeter provides a ful1 scale sensltlvity of 300 MV rme (residual noise < 25 pv). The voltmeter frequency range 1s 5 cps to 3 Mc (20 cpe to 500 Kc on the 300 MV range).

3-3. The distortion measurement accuracy oí the 331A and 332A la a result of the sharp eliminatlon characteristic of the retjection amplifier circuit and the low leve1 oí distortion lntroduced by the instru- mcnt. The fundamental rejectlon 1s at Icast 80 db. whlch is small compred to the dlstortion lntroduced

3-g. INPUT CONNECTIONS.

3-10. A elgnal source can be connectsd to the 331A and 332A through twlsted palr leads or a shlelded cable wlth banana plug connectore. Keep al1 test leads as short as possible to avoldextraneous pickup from stray ac flelds. When measurlng low-lcvpl sig- nale. avoid ground loop currente by connectlng only one instrument in a test eetup directly to power-llne ground through a NEMA (three-prong) connector.

,.Connect al1 other instrumente to the power Bource through a three-prong to two-prnngadapterandleave the pigtaildieconnected. Both the 331A and 332A have a dc Ieolatlon of *400 vdc from the externa1 chassls.

3-11. VOLTMETER CHARACTEFUSTICS.

3-12. The RMS VOLTS mnrklngu on the meter fare are based on the ratlo between the average and effec- tlve (rms) valuee of a pure sine wave. The ratlo of avrrage to effectlve values in a true elne wave 1s ap- proxlmately 0. fl tu 1. When the meter LS used to mesure complex waves. the voltnge lndlcnted may tmt be the rms value of the q tgnal applled. This de- viation of meter indication exista because the ratlos of ave-e to effectlvs values are usually not the same ln a complex wave ae In a sine wave. The amount of devtatton depende on mngnltudeandphase relatlon be- tween harmonics and fundamental frequency of the elg- nal applled. Table 3-l showe the devlatlon of the meter indicntlon of a sine wave partly distorted by hnrmonice. 4-1. OVERA11 DESCRIPTION.

4-2. Models 331A and 332A Dlstortlon Analyser ln- clude an lmpechnce converter clrcult, 0 re]ecttonam- pllfler, a meterlng clrcult, and a bcnaer aupply clr- cult. Inaddltlon to these fax circults, the Model 332A contalns M AM detector clrcult. A block dls- grsm of the lnstrumsnt 1s shmn in Ftgure 4-l. Tbe lmpe&nce converter provldes a luw noise input clr- cult nlth a hlgh sourcc lmpsdance lndependent of slg- nallmpeckmce placed at tbe ln@ termlnals. The re- jectlua ampllller relects the funamental Irequency dan lnplt signa1 nnd passes the remslning frequency componente on to the meterlng clrcult for measurlng dlstortlon. The meterlng clrcult provldes vlsusl ln- dlcatlons of dlstortlon and voltage levels on the front panel meter Ml. The AM detector clrcult (Mcdel 332A only) detecto the modulatlng signa1 from the RF carrler and fllters any RF components Irom the mtilatlng slgnaibefore lt 1s applled tothe lmpedance converter clrcult.

4-3. BLOCK DIAORAM DESCRIPTION.

4-4. DISTORTION MEASURINC MODE.

4-5. In the distortlon messurlng mode of cperatlon, the input signa1 la applled to the 1mpecBnce converter circult, Assembly A2, through the FUNCTION selector Sl and a one megohm attenustor. The attemtator is a voltage dlvlder network whlch provides 50 dbattenua- llon In 10 db steps. The deslred leve1 of attenuatlon la selected by the HENSITIVITY selector 82. The lm- pedence converter clrcult provldes an lmpedance con- verslon and unlty galn between tbe lnstrument lnplt termhmls and the lrqut of the rejectlonampllfler clr- cult, Assembly A3. Ths rejectlon amplifler conslsts of a preampllfler, a Wlen bridge, ond a brl*e am- pltfler clrcult. Ths SENSITIVITY VERNIER control, at the lnplt of the preampllfler clrcult, provldes a set levelslgnal to obtaln full scale readlngs on meter Ml for any voltage leve1 at lnput of the lnstrument. Wlth the FUNCTIONselector in the SET LEVEL posltlon, a grcund la applled to the Wlen bridge clrcult to al- lrrw a sl@lreference leve1 to be set up on the meter Ml In themeterlng clrcult. W1t.h the FUNCTION selector lnthe DISTORTION~ltlon, the Wlen brldge la usedas an Merstage ccupllng network between the preampllfler and brldge ampllfler círcults. The Wlen bridge la tuned and balanced to reject the fundamental frequency d the applled lnprt slgrtal. The remainlng frequency componen18 are lasacd on to Ihe IhAgc am- plífier circult and are measured as dlstortlon by the meterlng clrcult. Negatlve feedback from the bridge amplUler to the preampllfler narrows the rejectlon response d the Wlen bridge clrcult. Wlth the bridge c!rcu!t dtsabled, the rejectlon ampllfier clrcuit provides one db of gain for the functa- mental frequency, the harmcmics, andfor the reelduals to establish the set levelreference hr theSET LEVEL mode of operation. 4-19. BRIDGE AMPUFIEX CIRCUfT. The bridge aniphfler circult consiete of three stages of anipl!f!- cat!on,A3Q4 thrcugh A3Q6. The first stage d amplt- flcation A3Q4 !saf!eldeffecttrans!etor wh!champlif!es the dlfference signa1 between the gate and the scIIIrce. The field effect transistor 1s selected for maximum nolse performance with the hlgh lmpectances of the Wten bridge circuit. The signa1 from the draln 1s app!!ed to the two stag feedback amphfler A3Q5 ond A3Q8. The b!ae pc&ent!al at test pint TP2 ta set for max!mum d!stort!on performance for each indlvl- dual instrument and should not be changcd from the setvalue unlessthefleld effect tranststor h3Q4 la rc- placed. The outplt of A3Q8 la coupled to the meter circult througb the post attenuator S3Rl thr<ugh S3Rll. Negative fesdback from the output of the bridge am- pl.!f!er le appl!ed to the preampltfler circult to nar- rowthefrequency rejectlon characteristlc. It can be noted from the rejection clmrncter!st!c (refer to Fig- ure4-2) for the brtdge that the rejection al harmonic voltages le not constant. Typically the second itar- monlc le attemrated severa1 db more than the third barmonlc and the thtrd more thanthe fourth. Thc re- sult of the negative fe-k 1s illustrated by the re- jection characterietic shown in ctashed lines on the amphtude and pbase c!mracter!stic of Figure 4-2. Refer to Figure 4-%Randwi&h versus N-uU Depth for further detall on the rejectlon characterlstic. I-20. METER CIRCUIT.

4-21. The meter clrcuit (refer to F!gure 8-3) consists of thepost attenuator, the meter amplificr circuit, and the meter rectifier circuit. 4-22. Poãr ATTENUATCR. The post attenuator,KiRl through S3RlLls a series of resietor networks which provide attenuation d input etgrmls !.n 10 db steps. The attenuator le ueed tn conjunction with elther the input sensitlvity attenuator or the 1000: 1 attenuator to limlt the s!grml leve1 to the meter ampl!f!er to 1 mv for fullscaledeflection on allranges from 1 MV to 300 V fullscals. The meter clrcuit senslttvlty le increased to 300 PV for ful1 scale deflectlon on the 300 p V range by swltching resistora A2R29 and A2R30 into the call- bration network Reslstor A2R41 andcapadtor A2C29 are also switched into the callbration nehvork cm the 300 !JV rsnge to extend the passband d the ampl!f!er.

4-23. METER AMPLJFIER CIRCUIT. The meter am- p!!f!er clrcult consiete of a flve stage ampltfier cir- cuit, A2Q5 through A2QBwhlch develops the current forfull scale meter deflectlon. Negative dc feedback from the emltter clrcult of A2Q8 1s appl!ed Lo the hase d A2Q5 to staW!zethe dc cperating point d the meter ampllfler circult and to mintmlze the tenciency for dc dr!ft dueto amblent temperature clmnges. Nega- tlve ac feedback le applied from the collector clrcuit ’ of A2QQ tothe emltter clrcult of A2Q5. Thls feedback íe used to lnsure a flat frequency response, to lm-

CnpacitorsA2C27and A2CZP are used ae cmpllng capacitora for thc ñr feedbarkloopnnd the output s!gnaltothe OUTPUT connector. Thc mechanl- cal inertla of the meter prevents the meter from respondtng to !nd!v!dual current pulses, therefore the meter polnter reading correspllnds tc~theavrmge value of the current pulses rathrr than the peak value. The meter caltbratlon la to the rms value of a sine wave. Reslstor A2R45 tmpresacs a Iixrd blas ucross diodes A2CR8 and A2CR7 (biasing them closc to the conlnct pc&ent!al) to make the meter circuit response linear to lorge varlatlons In sig~ral amplitude. The linearity of this type nf clrcult ts also increased hy cnclosing the meter clrcult In the overa11 feedback loop.

4-25. POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT.

4-26. The power supply circuit (refcr lo Flqre O-4) coneists of a +25 volt series regulated supply and a -25 volt series regulated supply which is thr relcrencr supply for the I 25 volt supply.

4-27. The -25 volt regulated supply 1s of the convcn- tlonal serles regulator type. Thc amplifier AlQ5 IR used lo increase the loop gal11 of the clrcuit, thus im- provlng voltage regulation. The positlve Ieetilxxk applled to the junctlon of Al111 1 nnd AlR12 1s used lo further improve the llne frequency suppression of thc ctrcutt.

4-28. The t25 volt rc!gu!ated supply 1s of the conven- tlonal series [email protected](Jr type and operates the same as the -25 volt regulated supply.

4-29. Dlodes AlCR5 and A lCRf3 are cnupllng and pro- tectlon dlodes for externa1 battery supplles. The dtcdes protect the series regulator circuits from ap- pllcatlon of Incorrect polarlty al the battery input terminals. The dtodes also protect externa1 bat- terles from belng charged in the wrong dlrectinn when the ac poner 1s being used wlth hattcrles connected to the battery terminals.

4-30. RF DETECTOR CIRCUIT (332A ONLY).

4-31. The RF detector circuit consiats nf a rectiflcr A4CRl andfllter clrcult shown on thc schematic dia&Tam of Figure 6-l. The RF signa1 1s applled to thc cir- cuit through the RF INFJUT connector on the rear panel. The recllfler diodeA4CRl recovers the modu- latlng signa1 from the RF carrler and the Iilter cir- cult removes any RF components hefore the signa1 1s applled to the Impedance converter circult through the NORM-RF DET swltch S7.
