Performance through designRevolutionary concept, consistent manufacturing02

Combining its technical expertise and knowledge ofmilitary engineering with its constant evaluation ofcustomer experience, HESCO Bastion has continuedto develop and refine the Concertainer concept andits production techniques since units were firstdeployed during the Gulf War in 1991.

Concertainer units are a prefabricated, multi-cellulardefense system. They are manufactured from weldedZinc-Aluminium coated mild steel wire mesh andvertical helical-coil joints, all of which conform toBritish and ISO Standards and provide unparalleledtensile strength and extended service life. Each unit islined with ISO Standard (and ASTM rated) 203g/m2

non-woven polypropylene geotextile.

Once erected, Concertainer units can be filled usingalmost any locally available material. By enhancingthe mass and characteristics of fill material,Concertainer units are able to withstand attack froma variety of weapons, significantly reducing primaryand secondary fragmentation blast and thepossibility of sympathetic detonation.

The range of Concertainer units comprises of anumber of different sizes, from the smallest (Mil® 2)to the largest unit (Mil 7), enabling the constructionof limitless lengths of structure in almost anycircumstance. A choice of two colours is available to suit different environments.

When Concertainer units were first adopted by the UK Ministry of Defence, tests were conducted by DRAFortification Section (now known as QinetiQ) and theBritish Army Infantry Trials Team. The aim of this testingwas to assess their viability for use as a replacement forthe more traditional sandbags.

Since then, over fifteen of the world’s leading authoritiesin blast mitigation and effects have performed testsusing a variety of weapons systems ranging from smallarms to grenades, mortars to shaped charges, artilleryto Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Devices (VBIED).

Concertainer units have been successfully tested in boththe UK and US for their suitability as a vehicle intrusionbarrier. As a result of testing in the US, Concertainer unitswere awarded K-12 Certification by the US Department ofState - a recognition only given to products that have theability to prevent a 15,000 lb truck, travelling at 50 mph, from penetrating more than one metre inside a barrier.

As new military and natural threats emerge, HESCOBastion continues to progressively test its products in a diverse range of environments across the world, keeping it at the forefront of engineered fortificationsand protecting civilians and those who serve alike.

“We used them to protect our IP Station. They took a lot of rounds and still went ahead and kept our IP Station safe.”Sgt. Sean J., US Army, Iraq

Proven in the fieldEssential defences in conflict areas04

While data gathered during testing is vitallyimportant, there is no greater endorsement of theprotection provided by the Concertainer units thanits impressive service record and the testimony ofthose who have relied on it for protection in areasof conflict.

Since their first deployment during the 1991 GulfWar, nations all over the world have recognisedthe capability of the Concertainer unit to protectpersonnel, facilities and equipment against attack– from Bosnia and Kosovo to East Timor, northernAfrica and Afghanistan to Iraq.

And since the bombing of the Khobar Towers in1996, the nature of terrorist and insurgent threathas evolved, particularly in the use of VBIED.

Now, to stop the determined terrorist willing tosacrifice their own life, forces must be ever moreaware of the threat posed by the entry orapproach of unauthorised vehicles towardspersonnel, facilities and equipment.

Concertainer units were quickly recognised asproviding the most efficient means of achieving asecure area. They are now used extensively tobuild structures, such as protective bunkers andrevetments, that protect from indirect fire, andperimeter walls that provide unparalleled securityor safe stand-off distances.

Rapid and easy constructionA proven design solution05

Step oneUnload the units and pull out inthe required direction.

Step twoJoin the units together using the supplied pins to create therequired configuration.

A 10m long wall can be built from a Mil 1Concertainer unit by two men with suitablematerial-handling equipment, in less than 20 minutes.

An equivalent wall of 1,500 sandbags would take 10 men seven hours to build.

HBL Mil Brochure 17_05_12_Layout 1 28/05/2012 16:42 Page 16

Page 19: Hesco Military Brochure

During any conflict the ability to build a defensive orprotective structure with speed and efficiency is ofparamount importance. The design of Concertainerunits enables fast and simple transportation anddeployment. Most units can be stacked on top of eachother and are delivered flat-packed on standard timberskids or pallets, or in the RAID™ format, shown later(section 07).

The units can be manually lifted off the pallet, placed in the desired location and connected in a variety of configurations using the supplied joining pins.

Perhaps the most recognised advantage ofConcertainer units over other force protection systems is that they can utilise almost any locallyavailable material, natural or engineered, from sand to gravel, soil to concrete – employing minimalmanpower and using wheeled front loaders, excavators or concrete skips attached to a crane.

Recoverable Mil units are deployed in exactly the sameway as the previous Mil products. Once the mission isover, efficient recovery for disposal can begin. The unitscan be recovered, flat-packed and transported forrecycling or disposal, providing substantial reduction inlogistical and environmental impact.

Step threeFill the units with the selectedmaterial using a front end loader.

Step fourManually compact the fill to ensure even and stabledistribution within the unit.

A flexible systemLimitless structural possibilities06

Manufactured in a number of different sizes, eachConcertainer unit is designed to adapt to almostany conceivable fortification requirement.

On their own or combined with other structuresor materials, Concertainer units can be configuredinto a wide range of installations. From a simplesingle-level vehicle barrier or a 10km perimeterwall to an entire ammunition compound or abunker complex, Concertainer units enable theconstruction of rapid and efficient engineeredfortification with dependable protectioncharacteristics.

For instance, a wall built from Concertainer Mil 1units can be erected and filled by two men with afront end loader in less than 20 minutes, while anequivalent wall of 1500 sandbags would take tenmen seven hours to build. And when time is of apremium, resources are at a minimum, andprotection is of the utmost importance, the choice is clear.

The supply of Concertainer units can besupported by in-theatre training from our team, which has experience of military and civilengineering across the globe and appreciates thedifficulties faced by those responsible for forceprotection.

The evolution of ConcertainerThe RAID delivery system07The desire to reduce the logistic burden forcustomers using Concertainer in theatre lednaturally to the development of the delivery system.RAID permits the loading of preconnected lengths of Concertainer units directly into a specially modifiedISO shipping container – doubling load-spaceefficiency. In a single, inventive step, this has thepotential to take 50% of traffic out of the forceprotection supply convoy and completely eliminatethe need for secondary packaging material.

RAID allows swift deployment of any number ofunits, ready for filling. RAID units break naturallyinto five cell lengths with the removal of two zippins, dispensing as many or as few units as required. For longer walls, leave the pins in place and hitch up a suitable towing vehicle; within minutes over1,000 feet of RAID 7 can be deployed, using only halfthe manpower needed to deploy the same amountof palletised Mil units. The range provides variouswidths and lengths as shown in the table below.

Whether used as a secure storage system forConcertainer units or a practical ‘magazine’ for fast, one-off deployment along straight or curvedboundaries, RAID is the next generation of forceprotection.

Other military applicationsAn integrated product range08Since its first deployment in the military field ofoperations, Concertainer units have been adapted tomeet a diverse range of military requirements, partlyin response to the experiences of our customers.

To meet the broad range of requirements andchallenges, HESCO has developed a variety ofproducts, each designed to protect against specificthreats, from small arms fire and RPG, to mortarbombs and rockets. Several designs using HESCOproducts have also been independently developedby military agencies such as the US Army’s ERDC(Engineer Research & Development Center), and theCanadian Army’s DRDC (Design & ResearchDevelopment Center).

Specifically designed and manufactured to integratewith any ISO container-building unit, EOPS™(Extended Overhead Protection System) providesoverhead protection against mortar bombs, rocketsand 155mm artillery shells.

Also developed in response to demands foroverhead protection, the HESCO bunker systemutilises a 20ft or 40ft ISO container with pre-configured lengths of reinforced Concertainer unitsforming the walls.

The HESCO Guard Post kit provides a smallemplacement to protect two personnel againstsmall arms fire and is ideal for vehicle checkpointsor access control.

Civil applicationsDefending against the forces of nature09

With every natural disaster, the demand for civilprotection becomes increasingly apparent. Thedesign pedigree and versatility of Concertainer unitsand their success in military operations has resultedin widespread recognition in a variety of civilenvironments, from flood containment and erosioncontrol to architecture.

Originally designed to protect shorelines againsterosion, Concertainer units are ideally suited forprotection against the effects of flooding and tidaldamage. Because the units arrive flat-packed on siteand are lined with a geotextile membrane, structures can be quickly and easily built withmaterials typically found at eroded sites, such assand, rocks and gravel. Where a more permanent,hard-wearing structure is required, Concertainerunits can be filled with concrete.

With its unparalleled success in all manner ofmilitary applications, Concertainer units are nowbeing adopted by governments and authorities toprotect sensitive civilian installations particularly atrisk from terrorist attack, such as embassies, consulates, government buildings, oil refineries, power stations, research facilities and sports stadia.

Encouraged by its success in military and civilianenvironments, HESCO is continually exploringpotential new markets and other customapplications such as humanitarian housing, industrial spill containment and noise abatement.
