Project Capabilities

Our more than 40 years of experience in the rail industry stands as a testament to the quality of our work and the corresponding satisfaction of our customers. We are the source for public and private entities when it comes to building their rail systems. The comprehensive staff of designers and engineers we mobilize for a project offers maximum resource allocation and can navigate any project from the conceptual phase into the construction, and clear through to revenue service.

Our experience extends to self performing all critical path work required to build commuter rail, light rail transit, streetcar, and freight system lines. Using the most modern fleet of equipment in the industry and our highly trained construction specialists, we have the skills to build a wide range of transit systems. We can handle every phase of a rail project. The tracks, the stations, grade crossings, ballasting, and earthwork are all integrated into our list of capabilities. We are ever aware of the importance of costs and time to a project. Therefor we operate in a manner that mitigates delays and extra costs, passing the savings on to our customers.

Herzog was a lead member of the joint venture group that completed the $370 million, 12.1 mile West Rail Line light rail transit (LRT) project. The project was a Construction Manager/General Contractor service which allowed us to be involved in the early design stages of the project. The LRT system called for 13 bridges, 2 tunnels, 115 retaining walls, and 12 stations leading us to construct a multifaceted set of infrastructure systems. Much of the LRT route was through heavy urban areas requiring extensive utility relocation and road rerouting. We brought our years of urban LRT construction experience to this LRT system making it a highly successful and multi-award winning project.

Heavy/Highway Construction

Herzog was founded to provide specialized heavy/highway construction services, and to this day, it remains a vital part of our operations. We continuously pursue a path of innovation ensuring cutting-edge delivery systems, materials, and products for our clients.

Our work capabilities allow us to conduct all phases of work from the design, the management and to the construction of the project. Our construction services extend well beyond the traditional municipal, governmental and state agencies to commercial and private developments. We provide customers with a safe and sound road surface through new construction and asphalt resurfacing jobs.

A part of our asphalt program incorporates many environmentally friendly alternatives. Shingles, tires, and recycled pavements are reused in new asphalt mixes. The asphalt is as equally durable and long-lasting as traditional mixes. This recycled asphalt is the sustainable choice for tomorrow’s industry.

In our pursuit of delivering top quality products to customers, we are certified and accredited to conduct numerous quality control tests in-house at our first-class materials testing lab in Elwood, Kansas. Our range of testing extends from aggregate, hot mix asphalt, asphalt binder, soils and concrete. Using the most technologically advanced procedures and equipment, materials used in our work are subject to the highest quality control testing. Through our high standards of quality and workmanship, we are a recipient of numerous awards from governmental and industry entities.

We are confident we can deliver a product of excellence that is safe, durable, reliable, and meets or exceeds the expectations of our costumers.

Herzog is one of only two contractors to have their testing lab AASHTO accredited in the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. We are permitted to conduct special testing on construction materials at our Elwood, Kansas testing lab. Such elite accreditation ensures our testing services are of the highest quality and are of the highest standard possible in the industry.

Railroad Construction Our railroad construction division is as dynamic and diverse as our portfolio of railroad projects across North America. The diversity of our portfolio represents our adaptability to meet the needs of each unique project. The design, management, quality control, safety, and construction of projects are molded into a seamless program of execution. This ensures the smooth delivery of a product in a safe and economical manner.

We recognize the necessity to work closely with our clients, stakeholders, and the communities being impacted by our work, not only to meet their needs, but to ensure we realize their expectations and visions. This allows us to deliver a more personalized service. We take a pro-active approach offering engineering ideas that will enhance design aspects for the community while also devising ways to reduce the over all cost of the project for our clients.

The nature of transit project funding by local, state, and federal agencies is changing. This change, along with other contributing economic factors, are making the traditional design, bid, build process for rail projects dated.

We have responded by using alternative delivery methods: Construction Manager/General Contractor Service (CM/GC), Design Build Guaranteed Maximum Price, and Best value where the proposing contractors are “graded” on a stated set of metrics such as technical expertise, schedule, quality, and price, with the selection going to the team with the highest score.

The CM/GC delivery method allows us to partner with the owner and project designer providing preconstruction and scheduling services, constructibility reviews, value engineering, and budgeting. We then act as the general contractor during construction providing overall management of the project. This delivery method accellerates the construction process and allows greater cost-benefit decisions saving the owner valuable time and money, while guaranteeing a quality product. Our thorough understanding of this delivery method is demonstrated in the more than $2 billion worth of CM/GC projects we have constructed.

The uniqueness of these delivery methods have allowed us to meet the challenges of today’s evolving construction market by reducing costs, improving construction designs, and conserving valuable time.

Our experience extends to self-performing all critical path work required to build commuter rail, light rail transit, streetcar, and freight system lines. Using the most modern fleet of equipment in the industry and our highly trained construction specialists, we have the skills to build a wide range of transit systems. We can handle every phase of a rail project. The tracks, stations, grade crossings, ballasting, and earthwork are all integrated into our list of capabilities. We are ever aware of the importance of costs and time to a project. Therefore, we operate in a manner that mitigates delays and extra costs, passing the savings on to our customers.

In our pursuit of delivering top quality products to customers, we are certified and accredited to conduct numerous quality control tests in-house at our first-class materials testing lab in Elwood, Kansas. Our range of testing extends from aggregate, hot-mix asphalt, asphalt binder, soils, and concrete. Materials used in our work are subject to the highest quality control testing. Through our high standards of quality and workmanship, we are the recipient of numerous awards from governmental and industry entities.

We are confident we can deliver a product of excellence that is safe, durable, reliable, and meets or exceeds the expectations of our customers.

Herzog is one of only two contractors with a testing lab to have the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) accreditation in the four-state area of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska.
