Hershey Felder, Beethoven. What a glorious way to end TheatreWorksSilicon Valley’s 47th season. And what a spectacular season it’s been! Our mainstage has been home to a diverse array of plays and musicals, while our New Works Festival delighted and engaged audiences withprofessional readings of outstanding new works in progress.
Throughout the year our education programs helped K–12 students build critical thinking skills and an appreciation for the arts intheir schools, at our theatres, at the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital,
and throughout the community. I’m always amazed at the reach of TheatreWorks’ programs and how much they accomplish each year.
And now, it’s on to our 48th season, beginning with July’s world premiere of TheFour Immigrants: An American Musical Manga, a favorite at last year’s New WorksFestival. This year’s Festival has been announced, our summer camps have begunenrollments, and our subscription campaign is well underway. We’re off to a great start, but we still have much work to do.
Subscriptions are the lifeblood of TheatreWorks, allowing us to attract remarkableplaywrights, build glorious sets and costumes, and hire professional directors and performers, all before an audience ever enters the theatre. We offer four- to eight-playsubscription packages and, when friends ask, I always suggest purchasing the full eight-play season. Not only is it the best value, it’s also difficult to decide which shows not tochoose. This year is no exception with shows that run the gamut of experiences andemotions, from provocative dramas to soaring musicals to another masterpiece by thealways brilliant Hershey Felder. And let’s not forget our new bonus production of DavidSedaris’ funny and irreverent The Santaland Diaries, which will complement the family-friendly Around the World in 80 Days during the holiday season.
Regardless of which subscription package you choose, you’ll be guaranteed greatseats for the season and also have priority access to additional single tickets. Parking is easy and free at both the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto and the Mountain ViewCenter for the Performing Arts. And if you can’t make it to the theatre on your desig-nated day, no worries. TheatreWorks’ free ticket exchange capabilities on the web or by phone will easily accommodate changes to your schedule.
So, if you haven’t done so already, wait no longer! Subscribe today and treat your-self to another outstanding season of unforgettable theatre at TheatreWorks.

GENIUS AT WORKOn January 1, 2016, I was celebrating! The revival of our musical Jane Austen’s EMMA had just reachedthe top of TheatreWorks’ list of hit shows. Three weeks later it was replaced by a show that hadn’t evenopened yet: the regional premiere of Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin. Something extraordinary was aboutto happen at TheatreWorks and I was thrilled, enchanted with a play that showcased a great Americancomposer’s brilliant work, complex history, and lasting impact. But there was something more. HersheyFelder became Irving Berlin before our eyes. I found it a riveting, insightful, and completely transformative
performance and it was clear that thousands of others in the TheatreWorks family did too.TheatreWorks has always celebrated the intersection of music and drama on our stage. Over the years, we’ve featured
shows about musicians, such as 2 Pianos, 4 Hands (the training of two young pianists), and Opus (a string quartet at work);revues of popular composers like Stephen Schwartz in Snapshots, Carole King in Tapestry, Fats Waller in Ain’t Misbehavin’,and many more; and dramas about classical composers such as Mozart in Amadeus and Beethoven in 33 Variations. But in the world of music theatre, Hershey Felder’s work is unique, offering both the work of a genius played live and thegenius himself. It is an experience I find both inspiring and irresistible, a chance to imagine talking, playing, living beforeyou someone you have loved and listened to all your life.
After one preview of Irving Berlin I asked Hershey if he had other shows that had not been seen in the Bay Area. Oneimmediately stood out for him because of the proximity of an important library and research facility just a few miles downthe road, The Ira F. Brilliant Beethoven Center at San Jose State University. Hershey hadn’t performed his Beethoven showfor a number of years and had been considering a rewrite and redesign of the show—would we be interested in bringing it to TheatreWorks? A superb concert pianist, a charismatic actor, a consummate showman bringing life to one of thegreatest composers of all time? A chance to launch a new version of a show never before seen in the Bay Area? Yes, wewere interested! And soon, Hershey Felder BEETHOVEN was on its way to today.
I’m delighted you could be here for this thrilling conclusion to TheatreWorks’ 47th season. And delighted that anotherastonishing musical genius awaits us in Season 48, when Hershey Felder returns in the regional premiere of Our GreatTchaikovsky. I know I’ll see you there.

performance and it was clear that thousands of others in the TheatreWorks family did too.TheatreWorks has always celebrated the intersection of music and drama on our stage.

I’m delighted to be returning to TheatreWorks, with a newly revised musical-theatrical storyabout the composer Ludwig van Beethoven. For any young pianist, Beethoven’s “Für Elise”is a staple, an ordering of notes and harmonies that result in music so entirely memorablethat every child attempting the keyboard ‘wants’ to play it. And yet, where did such a piececome from? The circumstances surrounding this most beloved little “Bagatelle” is curious tobegin with but how does such a piece or, in fact, any of the great works of Beethoven—beit the Symphonies, the Concerti, the Chamber Music, The Piano Sonatas—make their wayinto the ear and imagination and stay for good? There is magic in all of it, and attempts toexplain tend to result in the individual listener’s response to the music. And therein is thesecret. The music means something different and special to each listener—but where cansuch music come from? Perhaps to begin with the man himself.
Several years after I became aware of Beethoven when I was nine, I was introduced to his “Heiligenstadt Testament.”Not really a testament per se, but a letter to his younger brothers Karl and Johann, written when he was residing inthe Viennese suburb of Heiligenstadt. It was written when Beethoven was 31 years old, and it has haunted me since I first encountered it. Ever since, I have tried to imagine the man from whom the music came, and have tried to reconcile the music with that very individual. This piece forms the basis of this new presentation of Beethoven.
Thank you for attending this new work, and thank you for having me back to TheatreWorks.
