With more than 33 million Le Pliage bags sold since they were introduced in 1993, the nylon canvas bag, available in a rainbow of colours, is a continued success story. Inspired by the art of origami, it is the bag of choice for travelling fashion editors and book-laden students alike – its appeal lying in its strength, accessible price point and practicality (it folds to the size of a paperback book). The company’s origins, however, lie not in luxury handbags, but in leather accessories. Founder Jean Cassegrain started Longchamp in 1948, producing the world’s first luxury leather coverings for pipes – a sell-out, with the likes of Elvis a fan. By 1955, Longchamp was making a name for its finely crafted leather goods and opened its first boutique in Paris. Longchamp is still family run, with Cassegrain’s granddaughter leading the way as creative director. Her current range of trend-led leather wallets, handbags and variations of the leather-trimmed Le Pliage are a fitting nod to the brand’s roots. LEATHER TREASURES Its nylon handbags may be a runaway success, but

it is leather that is Longchamp’s first love

Celebrating its 70th birthday this year, Longchamp has much to boast about – not least the design of one

of the world’s best-selling bags. With more than 33 million Le Pliage bags sold since they were introduced in 1993, the nylon canvas bag, available in a rainbow of

colours, is a continued success story. Inspired by the art of origami, it is the bag of choice for travelling

fashion editors and book-laden students alike – its appeal lying in its strength, accessible price point and practicality (it folds to the size of a paperback book).

The company’s origins, however, lie not in luxury handbags, but in leather accessories. Founder Jean Cassegrain started Longchamp in 1948, producing

the world’s first luxury leather coverings for pipes – a sell-out, with the likes of Elvis a fan. By 1955,

Longchamp was making a name for its finely crafted leather goods and opened its first boutique in Paris.

Longchamp is still family run, with Cassegrain’s granddaughter leading the way as creative director.

MULBERRY: ‘IT’ BAGS From its iconic Bayswater to the must-have Amberley, Mulberry bags boast both fashion flair and practicality. Founded in 1971 by Roger Saul at his kitchen table, early inspiration was drawn from rural England. The brand is now global – yet still produces out of its Somerset HQ. ASPINAL OF LONDON: LEATHER GOODS

The appeal of Aspinal lies in its artisanal leather goods

with quintessentially English style. Its roots are in luxury

stationery, which founder Iain Burton started handcrafting
