PROGRAMME OF EVENTS AUTUMN 2015
22nd – 30th August 2015
LEABHARLANNA POIBLÍ CHATHAIR BHAILE ÁTHA CLIATH
DUBLIN CITY PUBLIC LIBRARIES
HeritageWeek
Foreword
Dublin City Libraries and Archives is delighted to present its programme of events for Autumn 2015.
Each year, throughout all our services, we aim to deliver programmes that contribute to the educational, cultural and heritage life of our City, and I am pleased to say that our plans for Heritage Week do exactly that.
Among the many interesting talks, walks and workshops we’ll bring you back to Mount Street Bridge to examine the momentous events of 1916; we’ll go back in time to the Dublin suburbs looking at how Dubliners earned their crust; we’ll take to the stage with Jimmy O’Dea, and we’ll learn of the horrors of the 1915 Western Front through the words of Dubliners themselves.
National Heritage Week is part of Europe Heritage Days and Ireland participates with 40 other countries in celebrating industrial and design heritage.
This year is also ID2015 – Year of celebrating Irish Design. The library programme has a strong strand looking at design – industrial, graphic, architectural, and fashion, celebrating design now and in the past.
This is a diverse programme, with something for children, for lovers of music and drama, for those looking to develop their own business and for those who are interested in the business of the past - I’m sure we have something for everyone throughout the City – enjoy!

Music is a language which expresses emotion and feelings. In this series of three talks, Michael Grant will trace the development of this language, from the musical notation system in the 9th century (written down for the first time through the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods) to the present day. The Press Photographers Association of Ireland, is a not-for-profit, volunteer lead organisation comprised of the best photographers in Ireland. It is dedicated to the encouragement of members and promotion of press photography, and seeks to engage the public in the work of Ireland’s photographers.
With over 2,000 entries from press photographers across the country to consider, all of a very high standard, difficult decisions have to be made by the judging panel each year. The judges award first, second and third place in each of nine picture categories which are: Arts and Entertainment, Nature and the Environment, News, People and Daily Life, Politics, Reportage, Sports Action and Sports Feature. Of the 27 category winners, one photographer is chosen as the overall winner and named ‘Press Photographer of the Year’.
