communities along the hudson River, upstream
from glens falls and west of lake george, have joined together to celebrate their shared history along the earliest route into the heart of the adirondack wilderness.
from the great falls of the hudson, upriver to the dramatic hudson River gorge, the stream tumbles over falls and rapids, past dramatic cliffs of magnificent marble impregnated with sharp chunks of gneiss, then slows to flow easily through ice meadows, kept perpetually open by the annual scouring of spring ice floes. the adirondacks were the first area to be recognized by NYS legislation as being “forever Wilderness”.

from
high in the adirondack m
ountains of New York at lake tear of the clouds the m
ighty hudson River begins as a swam
py slow trickle. then grows to winding flows and rapids while gathering strength and width as she travels southward 315 m
iles to meet the
atlantic ocean near New York city.
as a legacy project from the hudson,
fulton champlain Quadricentennial
celebration, this first edition depicts the waterfront com
munities along
150 miles of the hudson River
from essex county to albany county. Support and highlights are
enhanced by the first Wilderness heritage corridor from
tahawus to Saratoga. the W
arren county planning and comm
unity development
department has acted as the coordinating m
anager of this first edition with assistance from
the town of chester, North Warren
chamber of com
merce and the hudson valley tourism
association.
financial support is credited to the towns of bolton, chester, corinth, hadley, hague, horicon, Johnsburg, lake george, lake luzerne, Queensbury, Stony creek, thurm
an, Warrensburg, city of glens falls
and the village of lake george. one of the goals in preparing this map
has been to create a teaching tool for local comm
unities, schools, libraries, m
unicipalities, visiting guests and watersports lovers in hopes that they will share and enjoy all the am
enities of the hudson while giving credit to those who have adventured before us.
We hope you enjoy the m
ap and we’d love to have your comm
ents. Send to pam

munities along the hudson River,
upstream from
glens falls and west of lake george have joined
together to celebrate their shared history along the earliest route into the heart of the adirondack wilderness. from
the great falls of the hudson, upriver to the dram
atic hudson gorge, the river tumbles
over falls and rapids, past dramatic cliffs
of magnificent m
arble impregnated with
sharp chinks of gneiss, then slows to flow easily through ice m
eadows, kept perpetually open by the annual spring ice flows. established in 1999 as a way to boost tourism
, the first Wilderness corridor was designed
to highlight attractions, events, outdoor activities and businesses along the river rail corridor between Saratoga and tahawus.
the Saratoga and North creek Railway spans both Saratoga and W
arren counties and follows the hudson River as it did in 1871 when thom
as durant‘s adirondack Railroad was first established. for m
ore information about tickets and
excursions contact the railway at sncrr.com

included in the inspiration for this project is our wish to extend a sincere appreciation for the contributions and achievem
ents by henry hudson (1565-1611), Seneca Ray Stoddard (1843-1917) and verplanck colvin (1847-1920). Stoddard and colvin both travelled extensively through the adirondack W
ilderness, documented their findings
through landscape photography and survey m
apping and then shared them with the world.
these visual records were instrumental
in shaping public opinion about tourism
, leading to the 1892 “forever W
ild” clause in the New York State constitution which created the forest preserve and the adirondack park.
to all those who continue to travel and explore the river, photograph its beauty, stroll the waterfronts, hike the neighborhoods or sim
ply stop to enjoy the natural and historic surroundings, we welcom
e you and hope this teaching tool will bring you back for another visit to the upper hudson River com
