Date/Time: Wednesday 16th January 2019 at 20:00 Event: Illustrated Talk: 'Cork Burning' Location: Kilmurry Independence Museum, Kilmurry, Co. Cork Additional Information: Cork Burning: A tale of arson, loot and murder’ was how one source described the events that would befall Cork city on the night of 11–12 December 1920. In a scene of almost unprecedented destruction, members of the British forces bent on revenge for the ambushes at Kilmichael and Dillon’s Cross set fire to both the commercial and the civic heart of the city. One side of Patrick Street and the area surrounding it were razed to the ground, while City Hall and the neighbouring Carnegie Library were gutted as Auxiliaries and Black and Tans shot at Cork’s firemen and cut their hoses in an effort to ensure maximum damage. Then, to add insult to injury, as the smoke cleared the British government tried to blame Cork’s own citizens for the devastation. Using eyewitness accounts and contemporary sources, and illustrated with exceptional images from the period, Cork Burning tells the story of the events before, during and after that infamous night. It covers such topics as Cork City before December 1920, the Black and Tans, Auxiliaries and K Company, Republican Cork, a timeline of events before the burning of Cork City, early fires and arson by crown forces in Cork, the Kilmichael Am- bush, the Dillon’s Cross Ambush, premises destroyed, official investigations into the causes, compensation and rebuilding. Michael Lenihan, author of ‘Cork Burning’ will give an illustrated talk in Kilmurry on January 16th. All welcome.

Date/Time: Monday 21st January 2019 from 11:00 to 12:00 Event: Cork County Council Special Meeting to Commemoration Centenary of First Dáil Location: Council Chamber, Floor 2, County Hall, Cork Additional Information: Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy is convening a special meeting on January 21st 2019 in Cork County Hall at 11 am to mark the centenary of the sitting of the very First Dáil. 1918 was a significant year in Irish history, both nationally and internationally. Democracy was coming to the fore following the ending of World War I. In Ireland, the elections of December 14th 1918 afforded all men over the age of 21 and, for the very first time, women over the age of 30, the right to vote and indeed stand for Parliament.Of the 105 seats available across the island of Ireland, those who stood behind an independent Ireland stood out in front when the results of the election were announced. 73 seats went to Sinn Féin, including nine from the County of Cork, represented by: Liam De Róiste; James J. Walsh, David Kent, Terence MacSwiney, Patrick O’Keeffe, Thomas Hunter, Michael Collins, Diarmuid Lynch and Seán Hayes. Rather than take their seats at Parliament in London, the elected men and sole woman, Countess Markievicz, established their own Government, Dáil Éireann meaning ‘the Assembly of Ireland’. This decision would set in train the Anglo-Irish War of Independence and subsequent Irish Civil War with County Cork playing a pivotal role in both. Dr. Neil Buttimer, Department Of Modern Irish, U.C.C., who has an in-depth knowledge of the era, will give a keynote address, entirely in Irish, fitting given that the First Dáil was itself held in Irish. Commenting on this milestone, Mayor Murphy is encouraging anyone interested to join him in marking this occasion, “On January 21st 2019, the country will witness the centenary of the sitting of the very First Dáil. We will hear from Dr. Buttimer and discuss the significance of the First Dáil; what it means to us today and reflect on those from Cork who had the courage and conviction for a new, free and democratic, Ireland.” This meeting is open to the public and anyone interested in attending is welcome to do so.

Mr. Dukes in replying to our invitation said he was delighted to be invited to deliver this year’s oration and looked forward to visiting the site. On 20th. February 1921 during an action in Clonmult, seven miles northeast of Midleton, County Cork the IRA suffered its greatest loss of volunteers in conflict. Almost the entire East Cork flying column was wiped out in a single defensive action. Twelve men were shot dead and eight men were taken prisoner. Two of the prisoners were subsequently executed. It was at once a deadly blow to the IRA and a battle of terrible cruelty; several of the volunteers were callously shot following their surrender and only the arrival of a British Army officer prevented the killing of the injured and remaining volunteers. The Clonmult Ambush Commemoration Committee is drawn from the local community who have come together to commemorate this tragic event of the War of Independence. The Commemoration includes a cross laying ceremony on behalf of each of the 24 men who had been in the house on that fateful day. We would like to see as many as possible attend the event and family relatives of the men involved. Ample parking adjacent to the site will be available on the day. Email: [email protected]. Date/Time: Thursday 28th February 2019 at 20:00 Event: Illustrated Talk: From Ardfield to Santiago de Compostella/Finisterre Location: The Parish Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork Additional Information: Pilgrims from West Cork have been travelling to Santiago de Compostella since the 10th century AD, either by ship to La Corunna, or on foot across England, France and Spain to Santiago, braving attacks by bandits and wolves along the way. Traolach Ó Donnabháin had been intrigued by this tradition for some time and between 2007 and 2011, sometimes alone, sometimes with colleagues, he undertook the Camino Frances/Camino de Santiago, from Le Puy-en-Velay in France to Santiago de Compostella, and onwards to Finisterre on the west coast of Spain, having initially walked from St James Well in Ardfield to Cork Airport – a total distance of 2,000km. His reasons for undertaking the Camino were twofold: to experience, at first hand, this spiritual and historical tradition and secondly to undergo the physical challenge of 500km sections of continuous walking, carrying one’s worldly possessions on one’s back! An important step in commemorating this tradition of pilgrimage between Ardfield and Santiago de Compostella was taken in 2009, when Traolach purchased a locally carved, wooden statue of Naomh Séamus/Santiago/St James, in Santiago de Compostela, which was later positioned in a specially constructed grotto at St James’ Well. In this lecture, Traolach will give an account of his experiences on the Camino.

Date/Time: Wednesday 6th March 2019 at 20:00 Event: Illustrated Talk: 'Visions and Revisions: Langdale Axes, rock art and the Neolithic of Britain and Ireland' Location: Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place, Cork Additional Information: ‘Visions and revisions’: Langdale axes, rock art and the Neolithic of Britain and Ireland - a lecture by Professor Richard Bradley (held in conjunction with the Prehistoric Society) and organised by the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society will take place in the Crawford Art Gallery, Emmet Place, Cork on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, 8pm. The links connecting Britain and Ireland stretch far back into the past and some of the earliest of these connections will be detailed in this lecture. The speaker, Richard Bradley, Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of Reading, has excavated, written and researched extensively on the prehistoric period, and is one of the leading scholars in prehistoric archaeology. It is easy to think of Ireland being an isolated island during the Neolithic (4,000-2,500 BC) and Bronze Age (2,500-500BC) periods. This was not the case, however, as there were trade and cultural links to our near neighbour and to continental Europe. These links can be seen in the ‘exotic’ items such as the Langdale stone axes from Cumbria found across Britain, Ireland and beyond. Likewise the Tievebulliagh axes from Co. Antrim found in Britain. There were cultural connections, as evidenced by the presence of identical monument types such as henges, barrows and stone circles. Our links to Britain extend far into the past and, in part of our shared history where there are no written records, archaeology can play an important part in uncovering and appreciating the shared bonds between our islands and continental Europe. This free event takes place at Crawford Art Gallery in Emmet Place, Cork, at 8pm on Wednesday, March 6. It is the latest in the 2018-2019 programme of lectures, field trips and other events organised by Cork Historical and Archaeological Society. Established in 1891, Cork Historical and Archaeological Society is one of the longest-running organisations of its kind in the country. It has produced an annual journal since 1892, and membership is open to anybody interested in the history and archaeology of Cork city and county. Cork Additional Information: Blarney & District Historical Society presents an illustrated lecture titled: ‘Death on the Pier’ The Cobh Pier Head Shooting of 1924 and The Search for the Moon Car. On 21st March 1924 a group of men wearing Irish army uniforms pulled up at the main pier in Cobh, Co. Cork. Seated in a yellow Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, they watched around 50 British soldiers disembark from a ferry from Spike Island. Suddenly the men in the Rolls Royce produced machine guns and fired on the British soldiers. One soldier was killed while eighteen others and six civilians were injured. Driving away at speed, the Rolls Royce stopped briefly to fire on a British warship in the harbour. An hour later armed British soldiers returned to Cobh and more shots were fired. There followed one of the biggest manhunts in modern Irish history, making front-page news throughout the world. The Rolls Royce and its occupants seemed to have vanished into thin air. The car was not seen again for 57 years. This evening, Guest Speaker historian and author, John Jefferies, unravels fact from myth surrounding the Pier Head shooting and the amazing story behind the mysterious Rolls Royce known as the Moon Car. All welcome and see www.blarneyhistory.ie for more information.

Date/Time: Saturday 16th March 2019 at 12:00 noon (Exhibition running from March 9th to April 10th 2019) Event: Casting Light on our Coastal Past (Discussion as part of ongoing exhibition) Location: West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen, Co. Cork Additional Information: West Cork artist Geraldine O’Sullivan’s exhibition Light Keepers is on show at the West Cork Arts Centre in Skibbereen from March 9th until April 10th. Light Keepers is a collection of 25 artworks capturing the unique world of Irish lighthouses. Geraldine’s paintings describe the physical structures of Ireland’s lighthouses and the dramatic settings in which they are placed, while also capturing the echo of the lives lived by the lighthouse keepers and their families. In these “Lifescapes” Geraldine uses stories, old family photographs and memorabilia given to her by Keeper’s families. It is these stories that influence her choice of locations to paint. Geraldine, commenting on her work, explains; “I live under the sweep of the Galley Head lighthouse beam and my curiosity as to what it must have been like to live and rear a family in these remote structures led to this exhibition. A journey that brought me around the coast of Ireland to some of the most desolate and beautiful headlands and offshore lighthouse stations.“Today, there are no longer any full-time lighthouse keepers in Ireland, attendant keepers are employed in a caretaker capacity. Families no longer live in keepers cottages; their histories are confined to archives, anecdote and a diminishing number of first hand narratives.” “Alongside this change is the modernisation of the lighthouses themselves. In July 2018, the existing light at the Fastnet was replaced with a LED light, placed on the roof of the old lantern. Nevertheless, the sweeping beams of light will still be visible at night from the balcony of the Galley Head lighthouse, as has been the case for the past 125 years. Time is bringing change to lighthouses and the keepers, and their families, will soon be gone, confined to the world of memory.” In 2017, Geraldine received an artist’s bursary from Cork County Council to enable her to undertake this project. Commenting on the exhibition, Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Patrick Gerard Murphy highlighted the inspiration taken from Cork’s unique geography, “With our magnificent Coastline, it’s no wonder that there is so much artistic talent in County Cork. I’m very proud of how Cork County Council supports artists and helps them bring their projects to completion. Their work enriches our communities.” As part of the exhibition, Geraldine O’Sullivan and Light Keeper Gerard Butler will be in conversation with Art Critic Gemma Tipton at the West Cork Arts Centre on Saturday March 16th at 12 noon.

Cork Additional Information: On 20th March 2020 there will be a large commemoration to remember the centenary of the Death of Cork Lord Mayor and Mourneabbey man, Tomás MacCurtain. U.C.C. is hoping that the meeting will bring a diverse, representative range of local institutions and individuals on board the commemorative process, and ensure that in 2020 a knowledge of the man, and former First Citizen of the city, and his contribution to the life of the rebel city and county will be widely dispersed among Corkonians locally, nationally and internationally. The meeting begins at 8pm in the G1 lecture theatre of the Kane Building on the main UCC campus and it is anticipated that it will have finished by 10pm the latest. All most welcome to attend.

Cork Additional Information: A book launch will take place in Douglas GAA club, at 7pm on the evening of Friday 22 March, to mark the release of a new study of ‘The Invincibles’ – the radical off-shoot of the nineteenth century Fenian movement perhaps most famous (or notorious) for carrying out the assassination of Lord Frederick Cavendish, the newly appointed Chief Secretary for Ireland, and Thomas Henry Burke, the Under-Secretary for Ireland, in Dublin’s Phoenix Park on 6 May 1882. The author, Shane Kenna, was one of the finest young historians of his generation, having established himself within the space of a very few years as the pre-eminent authority on the Fenian movement, with several full-length works on the subject to his name, including the first full-length English language biography of Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. Tragically, Shane passed away on 11 March 2017, aged only 33 years. At the time of his death Shane had nearly competed yet another book (on the topic of the Invincibles) and his family and fiancée, working with historian friends of his, have ensured that this volume has now been seen through to publication. It is hoped that as many people as possible can make the launch and all welcome.

Talks and walks are on offer over the weekend, and there’ll be music in Durrus village’s pubs each evening. At each day’s workshop, you’ll get the chance to learn stone carving or dry stone wall building for yourself. These are practical workshops where you learn by doing, with helpful advice from our experienced tutors who’ve worked across the world on heritage restoration projects as well as contemporary designs. Our first two West Cork Stone Symposiums saw artists working alongside building contractors, and trained stone wallers striving alongside people wanting to pick up tips for their garden project. The atmosphere was fantastic as everyone shared ideas and insights throughout creative and friendly sold-out festival weekends. Date/Time: Thursday 28th March 2019 at 20:00 Event: Illustrated Talk: The Underwater Cultural History of West Cork - by Julianna O'Donoghue and Dr. Connie Kelleher Location: The Parish Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork Additional Information: With the second longest coastline in Ireland, the County of Cork has borne witness to extensive maritime activity throughout time. The preponderance of shipping that passed by or utilised the many ports, harbours and hidden havens along its jagged coastal edge has left its cultural mark in the form of shipwrecks on the seabed. The record for the large quantity of wrecks off Cork's coast is growing all the time as new discoveries are made. The talk will begin by providing an overview of this underwater cultural heritage and how underwater archaeology is identifying, surveying, recording and preserving this finite resource, including detailing the legal requirements that are in place to protect these important wreck sites. It will then focus on a time when piracy and smuggling was in its heyday along the southwest coast, in the early part of the seventeenth century, and provide evidence from two shipwreck sites that may have possible direct links to a time that is only recently revealing its secrets. Underwater archaeologist Julianna O'Donoghue is director of Mizen Archaeology Ltd., based in Clonakilty in West Cork. Mizen has undertaken a multitude of high profile underwater archaeological surveys and excavations, and has made several important underwater archaeological discoveries. These include the 17th-century Colla Wreck located off Leamcon near Schull in West Cork that could be the possible remains of one of Dutch pirate Captain Claus Campaen's prizes from 1625. Dr Connie Kelleher is a member of the Underwater Archaeology Unit (UAU), National Monuments Service in the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. As part of her work she has carried out several shipwreck excavations that has included the remains of a Spanish Armada wreck, a 17th-century possible Cromwellian flagship and a wreck in Dunworley Bay in West Cork that could be directly associated with the Algerine raid on Baltimore in 1631.

Date/Time: Thursday 25th April 2019 at 20:30 Event: Illustrated Talk: The Story of Clonakilty Agriculture Show Society - by Fachtna McCarthy Location: The Parish Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork Additional Information:

Clonakilty Agricultural Show was first held in 1901 in the Fair Green, exhibiting a large number of horses, cattle, sheep and pigs. A prestigious event, it was reported that the three horse-jumping competitions attracted a crowd of almost two thousand people. Also very popular was ‘the novel feature’ of a Gaelic festival, in which Irish step dancing, solo and chorus singing, oratory and storytelling competitions were held in front of a newly erected Irish thatched cottage. Lord Carbery’s flying exhibition in 1914 attracted enormous excitement and although there was a lapse for a decade the show was again revived in 1924 and went on to become one of the foremost agricultural shows in Munster by the late 1920s. Local historian Fachtna McCarthy who has attended the shows for over half a century, is writing a history of Clonakilty Agricultural Show Society. This lecture will give a foretaste of the publication and bring to life the principal figures behind the formation and revival of the society as well as the history of the showgrounds. All welcome.

Date/Time: Saturday 27th April 2019 at 15:00 and display running up until May 15th 2019 Event: One Here Now: The Brian O'Doherty/Patrick Ireland Project Book Launch and Mural Display Location: Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork Additional Information: In the Centre Gallery of Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, County Cork, lay, until recently, behind layers of liner paper and white emulsion, a very well-kept secret: a nine-part series of floor-to-ceiling paintings by the New York–based Irish artist Brian O’Doherty, created under his pseudonym Patrick Ireland. The brightly coloured abstract wall paintings, titled One Here Now: The Ogham Cycle, were completed in 1996 using the system of codes and inherent structures of the ogham language, an early Irish alphabet. After their initial display, the paintings were covered over. For the next twenty-two years they went unseen. In 2018 Sirius Arts Centre Director Miranda Driscoll organised an ambitious project to uncover and temporarily restore the paintings, with the expertise of the conservator Don Knox. To coincide with this restoration, she also commissioned a year-long programme of artworks, compositions, performances, and talks that would respond to O’Doherty/Ireland’s work. One Here Now: The Brian O’Doherty/Patrick Ireland Project, co-published by Sirius Arts Centre and Paper Visual Art, comprises essays on O’Doherty’s wall murals and on each of the exhibitions and events that took place at Sirius Arts Centre from 2018 to 2019. The contributions in this book re-examine and re-interrogate the wall paintings and reflect on a project intended to preserve the legacy of these important artworks for future generations. Contributions by Alexander Alberro, Chris Clarke, Miranda Driscoll, Emma Dwyer, Luke Gibbons, Francis Halsall, Sarah Hayden, Kathleen James-Chakraborty, Sarah Kelleher, Prem Krishnamurthy, Eoghan MacIntyre, Ian Maleney, Brenda Moore-McCann, Peter Murray, Kirstie North, Brian O’Doherty, Nathan O’Donnell, Jenny Roche and Mary-Ruth Walsh. The book will be launched by Frances Morris, Director of Tate Modern on Saturday 27 April at 3 p.m. The murals will be on display until Wednesday 15 May. Cork Additional Information: This exhibition features a selection of photographs submitted by schools and former pupils from Cobh and Great Island, documenting shared and individual experiences of learning, friendship and play. The project, facilitated by Brian Mac Domhnaill, was conceived in association with This Must Be The Place | The Great Island (2nd-12th May) and See you tomorrow, a project and exhibition by Elizabeth Woods and Kevin Leong. Many people say their days at school were their best, citing fond memories of camaraderie, learning, sport and play. Others had a tougher time of it for one reason or another and so they are glad to see their school days come to an end. School memories are often recounted in conversation but rarely recorded. It is often a contemporary situation that triggers recall in a school veteran. The children of today sometimes need reminding of how good they have it! Read more.

Date/Time: Friday 10th May 2019 at 12:30 Event: Launch of Publication: The Much Maligned Mary Pike - by Kieran Groeger Location: Crawford ARt Gallery, Emmet Place, Cork Additional Information: The book launch will be on Friday 10th May at 12.30 in the Crawford Art Gallery, Cork, hosted by the Friends of the Crawford. Mary Pike, a young, wealthy Quaker heiress, was kidnapped, in July 1797, by a widowed knight, Sir Henry Brown Hayes, intent on forcing her into marriage and getting his hands on her money. She was rescued. He fled the country but then decided public opinion was in his favour and challenged her to face him in court. He was shocked when Mary Pike won the case and he was soon sentenced to transportation for life in Australia where the governor was a certain Captain Bligh, lately of the Bounty. Sadly, the history books tell us, the ordeal was too much for Mary Pike, she suffered a nervous breakdown and died in a mental hospital. But that is not quite what happened. The author, Dr. Kieran Groeger, delights in stripping away the layers of documentation, analysing legends, old newspaper accounts, piecing together the clues to reveal an astonishing story. All welcome to the launch.

Event: 'The Brigade' - A living History Documentary exploring the War of Independence in

West Cork Location: RTÉ One

Additional Information: The Brigade, a living history documentary exploring the lives of the

ordinary West Cork men and women who fought for Irish freedom during the War of Independence

will air on RTÉ1 on Thursday June 13th and Thursday June 20th. In the documentary, a group of

12 Volunteers were chosen after an open day at Clonakilty GAA. These men then spent a week

training as a flying column in locations in Kilbrittain, Enniskeane and Kilmichael. The training

started at West Cork Secret, Kilbrittain before moving to locations directly associated with the

original flying column training, the week culminated in an ambush scenario at the Michael Collins

Centre in Castleview. Their role was to follow in the footsteps of the flying column and to gain an

understanding of what life would have been like for the men by being on the run, marching across

country and living in barns. In a secondary strand, a group of history students from the University

of Essex spent a week travelling around West Cork discovering the history by meeting local

historians and descendants of the original Brigade. They heard the stories of the brave men and

women from the area and the dangers they faced, they also heard about the notorious Essex

Regiment who were based in West Cork and the suffering they caused the local population,

something not taught in British schools. The documentary seeks to take a fresh approach in telling

the history and hopefully bring the stories to life in a way that will hopefully connect with people,

in particular a younger audience, and inspire them to discover more about the War of Independence

period in their local area. The documentary was the brainchild of Clonakilty man, Samuel Kingston

and produced by Abú Media with funding from Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, RTÉ and Cork

County Council through its Commemorations Committee and the Department of Culture, Heritage

and the Gaeltacht.

Event: Illustrated Talk: Unde the Starry Flag - by Lucy E. Salyer Location: The Parish Centre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork

Additional Information: In 1867 forty Irish American freedom fighters, outfitted with guns and

ammunition on Erin’s Hope, sailed to Ireland to join the effort to end British rule. Yet they never

got a chance to fight. British authorities arrested them for treason as soon as they landed, sparking

an international conflict that dragged the United States and Britain to the brink of war. John

Warren, born in Clonakilty, turned his trial for treason into a bold challenge to British authority.

The small ruckus created by these impassioned Irish Americans provoked an international human

rights revolution that is not, even now, fully realized. The Fenians claimed American citizenship.

British authorities disagreed, insisting that naturalized Irish-born Americans remained British

subjects. “Once a subject, always a subject,” they quipped. Whose vision would prevail? Since the

American Revolution, the United States had been on a collision course with European nations as

Page 43: HERITAGE / COMMEMORATIONS AND CREATIVE IRELAND … · Event: Cobh Commemoration of the Centenary of the First Dáil Location: Cobh Remembrance Garden, West View, Cobh, Co. Cork Additional

migrants poured out of Europe and into America. “Sending” states often refused to relinquish their

legal hold on emigrants. The Fenians stepped into an international controversy that had been

brewing for years over “whose was whose.” The crisis resulted in a dozen landmark treaties and

path-breaking domestic laws – in Britain, Germany, and the U.S. – acknowledging the right of exit

and the freedom of migration. Dr Lucy E. Salyer is Associate Professor of History at the

University of New Hampshire and author of Laws Harsh as Tigers: Chinese Immigrants and the

Shaping of Modern Immigration Law, which won the Theodore Saloutos Book Award for the best

book on immigration history. A former Constance E. Smith Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for

Advanced Study, Salyer received the Arthur K. Whitcomb Professorship for teaching excellence,

and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Science

Foundation, and the American Council of Learned Societies. Her latest book Under the Starry

Flag recovers a forgotten chapter in international history, a time when nations sought to tear down

walls preventing the free flow of people. Copies of the book will be on sale at the lecture.

fascinating competition open to all schools in the County of Cork took place. This was a song

competition with local heritage as the theme. From the middle of May, last month, Áine Brosnan,

Archaeologist on the panel for the Heritage in Schools Scheme, went to participating schools and

took the children on a fieldtrip to visit a local monument. Then it was back to the classroom where

the children wrote their ‘Odes to their local hero’ who may have lived at the monument. All kinds

of sites were visited from Castles to Stone Circles, Stone Rows, Abbeys, a martello tower on a

tropical island and a Clock Tower. The children’s ages varied from jnr and snr infants to 6 th class

students. Each Ode was absolutely fantastic in its own right so the job of choosing winners was

taken on by Cork Bard John Spillane - a really difficult task!!! On Wednesday 26th June, the

winners, who won a workshop with John Spillane to help them develop their Ode into a song, will

perform there songs following a short Concert with John Spillane himself. The event commences at

Heritage Committee in partnership with the Irish Walled Towns Network. Youghal is still riding on the crest of a wave since ‘Ironman’ swept into the East Cork town in June of this year and it is all set to continue as the Youghal Medieval Festival delivers one of the largest, most successful free events of its nature in Ireland. Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Christopher O’ Sullivan praised organisers for their hard work: “I would like to congratulate Youghal Heritage Committee, who on behalf of Cork County Council have laboured to produce a fantastic festival programme which brings Youghal’s unique built heritage to life through a series of free events that the whole family can enjoy. Incredibly, Youghal is expected to welcome in the region of 10,000 visitors to the town, representing a substantial economic boost. The annual Medieval festivities not only generate economic gains, but also bring local businesses and the wider community together, strengthening the region’s rich sense of community and furthering the positioning of Youghal as growing tourism asset.” Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Tim Lucey said: “Cork County Council is firmly committed to the development of the East Cork region and we have been advancing significant projects for Youghal in particular. The restoration and re-opening of Youghal Clock Gate Tower, our role in securing investment for restoration and interpretative works at St Mary’s Collegiate Church, installation of Youghal’s eco-boardwalk and most recently the news of an €8 million commitment from Central Government enabling progression of our plans to develop and construct the Midleton-Youghal Greenway. These are but a few examples of our commitment to the development of Youghal as a sustainable and thriving tourism town. Youghal Medieval Festival is an ideal opportunity to showcase the excellent work that has been carried out in the town.” Highlights of this year’s event include: The White Horses Living Society and their 30 ‘medieval warriors’ who will set up their tented medieval village in the gardens. Their ‘battle re-enactments’ are now legendary and will take place throughout the afternoon. An ‘archaeological dig’ for kids will see children supervised by qualified archaeologists in 30 minute ‘workshops’. New for 2019 will see the award-winning petting zoo “Farmyard in Your Schoolyard”, with children taking the ‘alpacas for a stroll’ around the medieval gardens! All of the old favourites will return including ‘paint your shield’ and this year kids will paint their own fairy door! With balloon art, face painting, hair braiding, as well as a host of artisan food and craft producers all participating. The main event taking place on Sunday 4th August, a number of special talks will also take place in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church on Saturday 3rd August, including renowned Soloist Caroline Fraher performing in a free early evening concert in the venue. historians and history groups from across the West Cork district, details the unique part played by the men and women in the district a hundred years ago in the struggle for Irish Independence. In what’s hoped to be a precursor to a more permanent trail, the magazine sets out a number of important historical events, including the ambushes at Toureen, Crossbarry, Upton and Kilmichael as well as recording the story of those individuals who played such a pivotal part:Michael Collins, Tom Barry, Sean and Tom Hales, Sam Maguire and John (Flyer) Nyhan. In addition to County Mayor, Christopher O’ Sullivan set to attend the launch, Granddaughters of Michael Collins and Tom Hales, Helen Collins and Ann Hales will jointly launch the publication. Reflecting on Sunday’s launch JJ Hurley, who is a member of the organising group said: “Marking the centenary of those men and women who played a pivotal part in securing our Independence is really important, and ensuring their story is preserved for future generations has been our number one aim in promoting this project.” “In addition the project has significant potential for many rural areas in West Cork, attracting visitors who are fascinated by the exploits of those individuals from 100 years ago, but it needs to be developed and marketed and that’s the next objective of the group over the coming months, hopefully with the assistance of the local authority and government agencies.” In addition to the publication being available at Sunday’s launch, the magazine is set to be accessible at a number of tourist offices, libraries. hotels and visitor centres in West Cork. The public are reminded as this is a limited edition, with no fee, it is expected to be snapped up as a collector’s item.

History is all around us. It’s alive. It’s continuously evolving. Since the dawning of time, humankind has been recording history on cave walls, rocks and wood for future generations and Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition, which is supported by the Cork City Council, Cork County Council, Cork Lions Club, is carrying on this grand tradition. This unique educational family exhibition was established in recognition of the importance of our history and the great need for heritage societies and organisations throughout Cork City and County to join forces and come together under one roof to showcase their own unique heritage. These heritage societies at the grass roots level are the bread and butter of our rich, colourful heritage, tradition and culture. A parish without a past is like a person without a memory.

At the 11th Annual Heritage Family Festival – Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition, Millennium Hall, City Hall, Cork, Saturday, September 28th next the great voluntary endeavour of these passionate heritage ambassadors who are the guardians of our rich inheritance will be showcased. You will be left with no doubt that they are proud and loud of their rich heritage and can rest assured that our beautiful Cork City and the picturesque beauty of County Cork is in safe hands as we pass the red and white flag of our heritage, tradition and culture onto the next generation.

The goal of Celebrating Cork Past Exhibition is to encourage parishes in Cork City and County to establish their own historical societies to promote our unique heritage locally, nationally and internationally. Admission is Free.

Date/Time: Thursday 3rd October 2019 at 18:00 Event: Illustrated Lecture: Home Grown Architects Who Shaped Cork: The Class of 1956 Location: CCAE Nano Nagle Place, Ground Floor Lecture Theatre, Cork Additional Information: In 1956, a class of fourteen students began to study architecture at the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork. They were the first class to enrol in the course, which lasted until the 1970s. This event will bring together half of the original class of 1956. The course was accredited by the RIBA, and drawings, referred to as Testimonies of Studies, were sent to London for examination. Some of these original drawings will be discussed by the architects. In the late 1960s, a number of these architects formed a group called the City 70 Planning Group. This was in response to a planned network of roads, many on raised concrete stilts, which would have dramatically altered the character of Cork City. Incredibly, through their drawings and documentation, these young architects managed to halt the construction of the scheme. The architects will speak about their ideas for Cork City, which they put forward in the 1960s, many of which are still valid today. These pioneering architects had varied and distinguished careers. This event will be an opportunity for Cork’s present generation of architects to meet the class of 1956 and to ask them questions. All most welcome.

WSest Cork Model Railway Village on the Inchydoney Road, Clonakilty, has continued to evolve

and expand and recently welcomed it’s one millionth visitor, making it one of Irelands greatest

tourist success stories. The Model Village itself, with it’s miniature West Cork towns and model

railways running between them, is not only a huge attraction for children, historians and tourists but

is a regular haunt for many local families at weekends and during school holidays. Over the last 25

years, the board of management and its loyal and dedicated staff have continued to add new

attractions. As well as the main attractions, the Model Village now boasts both indoor and outdoor

childrens' play areas; a café; remote control model boats in it's "lake"; a history room where footage

of the old West Cork Railway line is shown and of course the Choo Choo roadtrain, (commissioned

on the 10th birthday in 2004), takes passengers on guided tours around town. Now, as part of it’s

celebrations marking a quarter of a century since it’s opening in 1994, an open invitation is

extended to former and current staff members, friends and associates of the Model Village – as well

as the people of Clonakilty and beyond to attend an illustrated talk on the model village next

Thursday 10th October at 8pm at the Parish Centre. Billy Houlihan, former Cork County Architect

who was one of the people instrumental in the project from it’s inception - and who is still involved

as a board member, will give the talk with a selection of slides also on the night remembering the

development of the Model Village from it’s "green field site" (the former town dump!) to the

present day. The evening should be of great interest to locals, business people, those involved in the

tourism and hospitality sector and in particular the many people who worked in the village over the

last 25 years including those who were young students during their summer holidays. Clonakilty is

lucky to have Ireland’s only Model Village and next Thursdays celebratory evening is a tribute to

the many loyal people who supported the project by providing sponsorship, donating artefacts and

leadership and also the loyal staff who made it all possible. The event is free of charge and all are

welcome to attend. See great photos and videos
