Western Nugget Sale Averages $4,502The Western Nugget Hereford Sale in Reno Dec. 6 proved to be a popular event. As Colonel Butch Booker silenced the gavel, 20 lots of cattle had made their way across John Ascuaga’s Nugget stage, averaging $4,502.

Leading the high sellers was an added lot from the show. A flush on the champion female, C Chanel ET, calved March 6, 2007, and sired by DM BR L1 Domino 146, gathered $15,500. The flush from this great female owned by Taylor Schrick, Sayre, Okla., went to Stallings Polled Herefords, Eugene, Ore.

Another flush offered on BF Flirtatious 713T ET, a Feb. 14, 2007, daughter of BR Moler ET, was purchased by George Sprague, Eugene, Ore., for $12,000. This popular lot was consigned by Kari Brumley, Orovada, Nev.

LBH 003K She’s A Deal 834, a Feb. 1, 2008, daughter of H Easy Deal 609 ET, was the high-selling live lot in the sale at $9,800. This show heifer deluxe was consigned by Hoffman Herefords, McArthur, Calif., and Lee & Dianne Hutchens Family Trust, Fallon, Nev., and was selected by Dylan Hafer, Martell, Neb.

A couple of picks from two powerful Western Hereford operations rounded out the high sellers at $7,700 and $5,500.

Genoa Livestock LLC, Glenbrook, Nev., bid for the privilege of picking its choice of heifer calves from the Pedretti Herefords herd of El Nido, Calif. This pick includes a selection from either the Pedretti fall 2007 or spring 2008 heifer calves.

Bobby Mickelson, Santa Rosa, Calif., is well aware of the Shaw cow herd power and bid $5,500 to claim ownership of this lot. Mickelson now owns the opportunity to pick from the fall 2008 heifer calves of Shaw Cattle Co., Caldwell, Idaho.

Congratulations go to Matt Macfarlane Marketing for successfully managing this show and sale.

During the 2008 Western Nugget National Hereford Show in Reno, Nev., Bruneau Cattle Co., Bruneau, Idaho, was honored by the Western States Hereford Association as the commercial producer of the year.

The Davis family of Bruneau Cattle Co. has lived in Owyhee County, Idaho, since 1949. They moved to the area to grow alfalfa seed, but in the early ’50s, there was a major flood that wiped out the alkali bees (no leaf cutter bees then). That lack of pollinators put the kibosh on growing alfalfa seed.

Encouraged by good neighbors, the Davises entered the cow business in 1952, with additional support and a loan from Roland Hawes, who owned the Bruneau State Bank. In 1959 Bruneau Cattle Co. was formed with the combination of assets between William I. Turner & Sons and Perle Davis & Sons.

The Davises were the minority shareholders and the managers, with the agreed upon goal that, eventually, the Davis family would acquire the Turner family’s interests in Bruneau Cattle Co. That event happened in 1972. The Turners put in their range rights and private lands on Battle Creek, plus cows and horses. The Davises put in everything they had. The cows were all Herefords or Hereford-Shorthorn crosses.

Bruneau Cattle Co. expanded its range beef cow operation, later adding a commercial feedlot. The Davises started feeding their own calves in the early ‘60s and shortly thereafter began taking in neighbors’ calves.

Currently, the families of Don and Gene Davis own Bruneau Cattle Co. Gene just turned 84 and Don will soon turn 86. Bill McBride (Don’s son-in-law) and Eric Davis (Gene’s son) round out the current management team.

Today the family operation is supported by a commercial operation of 1,200 Hereford-based cows and a 7,000-head feedlot. Most calves are fed to finish, with 80% being custom-fed cattle.

According to the Davises, “We’re pretty proud of our outfit, just like everybody is. Today, we have a three-legged stool — cow-calf, feedlot and farm — it’s pretty well balanced, we think.”

Eric had a fellow ask him a few years ago if he was still breeding Hereford cows and he answered, “Yes.” The fellow asked, “Why?” And Eric says he told him, “When those Herefords quit working for Bruneau Cattle, we will look at something different — we haven’t seen a need to do that yet.”

Family members have been actively involved in local, state, and national organizations. All four members of today’s management team have served as Owyhee County Cattlemen’s Association president. Don served 20-plus years as an Owyhee County commissioner. Don and Gene both have their 50-year recognition as members of the American Legion (WWII veterans with purple hearts, a bronze star and a silver star). Bill is coming up on 40-year recognition of Legion membership and has served as adjutant for Bruneau American Legion Post No. 83 for nearly 30 years. Gene and Eric have both served as Idaho Cattle Association and Cattle-Fax presidents. Eric was honored to serve as National Cattlemen’s Beef Association president in 2003 and is currently a member of the National Cattlemen’s Foundation board.

The owners of Bruneau Cattle Co. said, “We are honored by this recognition by Western States Hereford Association and accept it with humbleness and thanks. There are probably plenty of others who deserved it more, but we’re grateful to all of you and for this industry in which we make our living.” HW
