There are of course lots of opportunities to be creative in the Visual Arts, Music and Writing sections (please refer to our Visual Arts section from page 46 to 61 to see some of our new courses). If you are looking for a creative outlet that combines art and technology, you should also look in the Digital Media section. We introduced Digital Photography last year and the beautiful photographs that head up the Digital Media section are the work of students from the Digital Saturday course.
We have added to the Anthropology and Archaeology courses as they proved to be very popular last year. Our range of dance classes has also grown and now includes such varied styles as Lindy Hop and Bhangra! So there is something for you whether you want to exercise your mind or your body.
We have expanded our Business and Management section by adding to the range of qualifications we offer to help you get into work or move ahead with your career. Take a look at our Short Business courses on page 16.
We want to help you make the right choice, so if you are thinking about a new career direction we are planning some Information and Advice sessions on career change in the autumn - look out for details in the Centre or on the website www.marywardcentre.ac.uk
We look forward to welcoming you in the new academic year and hope you enjoy your time at the Mary Ward Centre.

Welcome to the Mary Ward Centre, the friendly place to learn
GENERAL INFORMATION
We are looking forward to another exciting and stimulating year at the Mary Ward Centre. As you browse through this year’s prospectus you will find lots of new courses, alongside those subjects that are known and loved by so many of our students.
2
Our Buildings. We hold our classes in two buildings:
42 Queen SquareOur much loved home at 42 Queen Square, a Grade II listed Georgian building fronting a leafy square in Bloomsbury, houses our Art and Sculpture studios, various classrooms all with modern technology as well as original Georgian features, and a hall for music practice and performances. Here you will also find our very popular vegetarian café. There is even a pleasant roof garden with stunning roof-top views.
10 Great TurnstileAt 10 Great Turnstile there is classroom space and offices for our sister organisation, the Mary Ward Legal Centre. The building is located close to the business sector of Holborn, and benefits from the bustle and buzz of local shops, banks and offices.
EnrolmentYou can enrol in person, on-line, by telephone or post. Postal and online enrolment will start from 17th June 2013. You can enrol in person or via the phone from 24th June 2013. Enrolment in person is at 42 Queen Square.
We are open to receive enrolments during the summer vacation, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 10.00-16.30, Wednesday 10.00-20.00 and Friday 10.00-13.00. In term time, we are open for enrolments, Monday-Friday 10.00-20.00 and Saturday 10.00-16.00.
Please enrol early to avoid disappointment, as many of our courses are over-subscribed. A small number of courses may be cancelled because they don’t have sufficient students to make them financially viable. Signing up early will secure your place and help to ensure the course you want will run. Once a class is full, we will put your name on a waiting list and contact you if a place becomes available before the start date.
Please note:• Please use the enrolment form for
all enrolments.• Online, postal, and fax enrolments are
available to full fee-payers only.• You can pay with a credit/debit card,
cheque (or by cash in the case of personal enrolments).
• Classes marked have an approval or interview process. Please follow the guidance given for the course in the prospectus
• If seeking a concessionary fee, proof of entitlement must be provided before you can enrol. Your proof must be dated within the last six months. Personal enrolment is advised when seeking a concessionary fee.

Our modern language courses concentrate on communication for practical, social and cultural purposes and are taught predominantly in the target language. Speaking and listening skills are developed mainly through conversation. Reading and some writing are also included. Tutors are native speakers or have an equivalent facility in the language.
Students may join courses in any term, space permitting. We are unable to keep places for those wishing to progress from one term to the next and you are therefore strongly advised to enrol as early as possible.
In addition to the modern foreign language courses, we have specialist courses in Community Interpreting and Community Translation.
Course descriptions are available from Reception and on our website: www.marywardcentre.ac.uk If you are still in doubt about the right course for you, visit the website for a self-assessment sheet or speak to Mandy or Jane, 020 7269 6023. If there are spaces, students may transfer to a different level after enrolment.
Please note: you need to seek guidance for courses marked before enrolling.
Community Interpreting, Community Translation & Bilingual AdvocacyThese courses are all accredited through portfolio presentation and assessment is based on course work. There is no external exam.

Anthropology
Introduction to Anthropology
A famous social anthropologist once described his job as being a sort of cross-cultural private eye, spying into people’s cultures instead of their bedrooms! Anthropologists look at very different societies, often finding different solutions to common human problems. Discovering these differences is fascinating, and makes us stand back and question our own assumptions. It shows that perhaps no element of human behaviour is either ‘natural’ or ‘inevitable’. On this course we will examine some of the ways people think and act in different cultures, including our own.401 ......................................... 24 Sep-3 DecTue 13.30-15.30, 11 meetings

NEW: Looking at Art - An Anthropological Perspective
What does ‘art’ mean to us? What does it mean to people in other cultures? Pablo Picasso said: “We all know that art is not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.” How useful is this observation in helping us understand and enjoy the diverse forms of ‘art’ found in different cultures, including our own? The emphasis will be on discussion, sharing ideas based on cross-cultural material provided in class and on our own individual observations.402 ....................................... 14 Jan-25 MarTue 13.30-15.30, 11 meetings

Does ‘health’ mean the same thing to all of us? What about ‘healing’? We will look at some different approaches to health and healing in traditional societies. How does culture influence the experience of illness and the process of healing? World Archaeology
Stonehenge, the gigantic Easter Island sculptures, the prehistoric cave art of Lascaux, such creations have fascinated people for thousands of years. Why were they created? What drove the people that produced them? And why do they continue to enthral us today? The captivating study of archaeology uses material remains to learn about how people lived in the past. In this course we will dig into human origins, investigate the development of art and symbolism, track the spread of agriculture across the globe, explore the first uses and exchange of metals, and discover the strange habits associated with ancient ritual and burial sites. 405 ....................................... 13 Jan-24 MarMon 18.00-20.00, 11 meetings

NEW: You Can’t Step In The Same River Twice: Introduction to the Counter-Tradition
The history of Western thought is the history of the Tradition, whose other name is rationalism: the belief that the world is an orderly cosmos, with human reason as an integral part. It has been the dominant mode of thought and it promises to overcome the contingencies of existence and achieve a science (and a technology) that will help us master our destiny. But there has also been a steady current of thought and practice in western philosophy which reminds us of human limitations and of the ungraspable nature of the world. This is the Counter-Tradition, whose diverse manifestations include humanism, scepticism, and the opening of philosophy to poetry and art.We will look at the work of several philosophers, including Protagoras, Heraclitus, Montaigne, Nietzsche, Merleau-Ponty, post-structuralism and radical empiricism.419 ......................................... 23 Sep-2 Dec Mon 15.30-17.30, 11 meetings

NEW: Zen & the Art of Deconstruction
A comparative course bridging Zen Buddhist philosophy and practice with post-structuralism, with a particular emphasis on Shakyamuni (the historical Buddha), on Nagarjuna, Dōgen, Blanchot, Derrida and Gendun Chopel. Common to both approaches is their radical inquiry, their encouragement of doubt and perplexity, and the uncompromising alliance to the emergence of the ‘sacred’, conceived outside the restrictive canons of institutionalized religion and spirituality. What these two disparate perspectives also share is a dissemination of philosophy into art and literature, and a closer look at lived life and experience outside the metaphysics of presence.420............................................. 13 Jan-24 Mar Mon 15.30-17.30, 11 meetings

NEW: Unconditional Hospitality
What is identity? What is its relation to otherness? For some contemporary philosophy, identity is born through hospitality. Summoned by another, called to respond, the response creates me. Called to be a host to the other, I recognize that autonomous existence is an illusion. Hospitality is xenophilia (love of strangers), a revolution in perception with profound ethical, aesthetical and political implications. We will explore notions of identity and otherness and their links to themes such as homeland and exile, revisiting and drawing inspiration from Nietzsche, Arendt, Adorno, Levinas, Derrida, Cixous, Jankélévitch, Blanchot and Butler. 421...............................................28 Apr-14 Jul Mon 15.30-17.30, 10 meetings

Often neglected figures in the philosophical canon, interest in Bergson and Whitehead has revived in recent years and for a number of reasons. NEW: Hegel
For such a decisive figure in philosophy and culture more generally, the reception of Hegel’s thought is too often reduced too little more than a caricature. This course will seek to counter this with a detailed exploration of a range of his work. We will aim to assess their original message and contemporary relevance and to seek to work through the stakes of any attempt to finally move beyond or past the ideas of one of the true giants of philosophy. 432CS ...........................................16 Jan-3 AprThu 18.00-20.00, 12 meetings

NEW: Philosophy and Cognitive Science
Is a truly scientific and materialist understanding of the mind becoming a reality? Is such a thing even possible? Attempting to work out answers to these questions leads us to encounter some genuinely hard problems which have important implications not only for the sciences but for our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. This course will provide an in-depth investigation of the philosophical aspects of the ‘cognitive revolution’, supporting this through case studies drawn from contemporary research within the cognitive sciences and research on artificial intelligence, robotics and evolutionary theory. 433CS ...........................................1 May-17 JulThu 18.00-20.00, 12 meetings

Learn the arts of communication as a novelist, journalist, poet or short-story writer. Build up your skills, discipline and knowledge to publish your own work. Whether you are just beginning to write or are already published, you will find a course here to suit you. These courses require a commitment to writing pieces of work, both in and outside of class time. Please note that these courses are not suitable for those learning to speak or write English. Full course descriptions are available in Reception and on our website: www.marywardcentre.ac.uk
Progression routes in Creative WritingWe offer a clear progression route from Beginners, through Improvers to Advanced. Most courses are split into 2 parts - it is advisable to do part 1 before part 2.
Depending on your skill level and experience you may wish to do a certain
level for a whole year or if you feel you are ready to move on, you can join a higher level course in the next term. Your tutor will be able to guide you. A general rule of thumb is that for Intermediate courses you need to have done at least 1 year in a writing group and for Advanced courses you need to have done at least 2 years in a writing group.
You don’t have to enrol on a new level course straight away and are able to attend any class as a visitor once to see what it’s like. If you would like to “spice up” your practice or try a specialist area, there are a number of standalone courses which can be taken at any time. These appear in the “Specialist & Inspirational Writing courses” section below and range in length from 12 weeks to one day!
If you would like some advice and guidance about which course to do, please speak to a member of the Creative Arts Department.

Choosing a courseWith the exception of accredited courses and some courses specifically for beginners or advanced levels, the majority of courses accommodate all levels of ability and experience.
This mix contributes to a rich learning environment where experienced and inexperienced students learn from each other and from the diversity of projects and activities. Beginners are welcome in all mixed level classes: have no fear – our job is to help you. Where classes are aimed at particular levels of experience, the levels are indicated to guide you. All our tutors are practising artists and performers.
With the exception of classes marked (T) which are held in the top-floor studio, all arts & craft classes are accessible for students in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility.
Materials, unless stated otherwise, are not provided. Please refer to your course description for material lists. Your tutor will advise you further on the first day of your course. Where classes have a life model, charges are incorporated into the course fee.
For courses marked ©, you will need to speak to the course tutor before enrolment to decide if the course is appropriate for you.
Please note: arts and crafts courses are very popular and frequently oversubscribed. Students who have enrolled on term one are not automatically reserved a place for terms two and three. Please enrol early to avoid disappointment.
If you require advice about the right course for your particular needs, please see the course descriptions on our website: www.marywardcentre.ac.uk, ask at Reception or speak to a member of the Creative Arts team.
