Official Title: ASSISTANT PROFESSOR(C40NN)
Degree and area of specialization: A PhD in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, or related field is required for this position.
License/certification:
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: PhD required, postdoctoral experience is preferred.
Principal duties: This is a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the Department of Horticulture.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally-recognized program of
extension/outreach, research, and teaching in the area of fruit crop production. This position will
focus on fruit production, including cranberries, grapes, tree fruit (e.g., apple/cherry),
strawberries, and other crops. The successful candidate will address issues that limit production,
enhance sustainability, and facilitate value-added opportunities for producers.Examples of
research areas could include sustainable fruit production, mineral nutrition, photosynthesis and
carbon partitioning, cold-hardiness, adaptation of fruit crops to northern climates, development
of value-added products from fruit crops, plan growth regulation, and abiotic stress physiology.
Wisconsin fruit crop farmers and industries are important contributors to the overall agricultural
economy of the state and critical aspects of Wisconsin's food system. In 2011, Wisconsin
growers produced over four million barrels of cranberries, which represented more than 57% of
the U.S. cranberry crop. Wisconsin has ranked number one in cranberry production for the past
18 years. Farm value of the 2011 Wisconsin cranberry crop was more than $195 million.
Wisconsin also ranks near the top nationally for tart cherries (fourth), strawberries (sixth) and
apples (twelfth). Taken together, these crops make up more than $228 million in farm value for
Wisconsin. Additionally, fruit crop growers contribute to the vitality of rural Wisconsin
economies by stimulating popular agro-tourism ventures (such as wineries, "you-pick"
businesses, and Door county tourism) and hiring a significant number of seasonal and full time
employees.
Wisconsin fruit crops are poised for rapid industry growth. The Wisconsin Grape Growers
Association was recently formed to organize and promote this industry. Multiple wineries have
initiated over the past five years increasing the diversity of Wisconsin's agriculture and adding a
potential tourist destination within the state. While increases in crop transportation costs have
negatively impacted many agricultural industries, the associated attention toward local
procurement has stimulated renewed interest in local Wisconsin fruit production, particularly for
strawberries, raspberries, apples, and tart cherries.
Collaboration with peers in soil science, food science, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology
and other disciplines would be expected. The incumbent will successfully compete for external
funding on a state, regional and national basis and will develop an innovative extension and
research program. Leadership in, and communication with, fruit crop producer groups is
expected. Additional responsibilities include mentoring undergraduate and graduate students,
instruction of the fruit crops course (alternate years), and participation in the rest of the
department's teaching mission, university and community service as appropriate.
This position carries a commitment to the three functions of resident instruction, research, and
outreach/service, as well as professional and university service as appropriate to the position and
rank.
Additional Information:
Candidates must have a strong disciplinary foundation in horticultural production; effective oral
and written communication skills; ability to design and conduct interdisciplinary research
leading to advances in fruit crop production; the ability to attract extramural funding and publish
in peer-reviewed journals; and the ability to work collaboratively with individuals and
organizations from a wide range of public and private perspectives. Preference will be given to
candidates that present evidence of excellent outreach and teaching skills, a record of publishing
in peer-reviewed journals, and success attracting extramural funding.
A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
