Saxmundham is an early adopter of the Stay Safe scheme, designed to make vulnerable people feel safer within the community. The scheme, which will eventually be rolled out across Suffolk, provides people with additional needs access to places that will offer them support. The idea is that anyone who may feel anxious or vulnerable when out and about in the community can easily find shops or businesses who will offer to help if they need it. Businesses taking part in the scheme display Stay Safe stickers in their windows so they can be easily found. They may offer a vulnerable person somewhere to sit down quietly or phone for someone they know to come and help. In an emergency they could contact the police on the person's behalf. Trawler's Catch

Beef dripping and Suffolk-grown potatoesare two of the most important ingredientsin the success of Trawler’s Catch, the fishand chip shop that opened onSaxmundham High Street 6 years ago.

“We buy our potatoes from a farmer atStratford St Andrew and do all thepreparation on site. It’s the only way toguarantee quality,” says Toby Basil, whohas been manager of Trawler’s Catch forthree years. You may also recognise himfrom the Trinity Café on the corner of theMarketplace.

“We fry in beef dripping that has beenpurified to remove any residual beefflavour and never use hydrogenated fat. Itmeans that we can fry at the hightemperatures needed to make sure thefish and chips taste their best. I alwayswarn vegetarians.”

The fish at Tawler’s Catch has beencaught and frozen at sea, which meansthat it’s as fresh as possible. “If we were tosell line-caught fish, I’d need to double ourprices,” explains Toby Basil.

The vast majority of what they sell is cod.“I’m sure that we’re seeing the last of thehaddock on the east coast,” he says. “It’sjust impossible to buy any decent sizesalthough in the North West of the UK, itseems to be the other way around, with

haddock being the standard choice.”

Trawler’s Catch fish bites are famous -small battered pieces of cod, about the sizeof a golf ball. They’re a really popular partof children’s meals. “Children enjoy eatingreal of fish, albeit in smaller pieces. Itmeans that they don’t have to have someover-processed option.”

OAP lunchtime deals are also verypopular, with one couple driving fromWalberswick every week for fish and chipsthat they eat in the car.

Toby Basil is very positive about theoutlook for the business. “I think thingsare definitely picking up, it’s much betterthis year than last and we gets lots ofcompliments about our food, which isalways a good thing.”

Seizmond Gallery

October saw the opening of a new venuewhere you can enjoy local art by localartists. Photographer Jason Averycreated the Seizmond Gallery in theheart of Saxmundham, which offersaffordable space for creative people inthe area.

Jason has refurbished the two floors ofthe gallery transforming what had beenoffices, a carpet showroom and even aphotographic studio many years ago. Onthe ground floor he is showing hisstunning landscape photographs, accompanied by a small selection ofChris Newson’s paintings.

Downstairs there is a breadth of art thatis astounding. Oil, acrylic andwatercolour paints meet with etching, photography, collage and sculpture, surrounding the visitor with colour andvibrancy. Artists exhibiting this monthinclude: Helen Armstrong Bland, MyrtleA Beale, Charmian Berry, KirstieBlackbenz, Hugh de Las Casas, ShelleyNott, Dawn Rosher, ChristinaTomkinson, Susan Whatling and JudithWilson. For some it is the first time theyhave exhibited their work, for others

The Seizmond Gallery offers anaffordable and flexible space unavailableelsewhere in the area.

Jason is organising “Meet the Artist”events during their tenure, where thoseexhibiting will be in the gallery to talkabout their work and their influences. His vision and enthusiasm is certainlyinfectious and judging the reaction bylocal artists this has certainly beenborne out, with a growing waiting listfor those wanting to show here.

The Seizmond Gallery in Market Place,Saxmundham is open Tuesday toSaturday between the hours of 10am to4pm, except for Thursday and Saturdaywhen it is open between 9am and 1pm.

The campaign to cancelthe proposed A14 tollcontinues and Irecently led a debate inParliament pressingthe case to the newroads minister. Let'sbe clear: the upgrade iswelcome and will go

ahead but the Government has singled outusers of the A14 for tolling while no othermajor road improvement includes such ascheme. This effectively means an extratax on Suffolk residents and businesses. The Transport Secretary has alreadypromised a meeting with the Chamber ofCommerce and local MPs and I am alsopushing for a meeting with the PrimeMinister. I have had hundreds ofresponses back to my petition that I willpresent to Parliament but I still wantmore people to back the campaign. You candownload a copy of the petition fromwww.theresecoffeymp.com/a14/ and send itback freepost.

Talking of protecting our growing economyhere in Suffolk, I recently addressed theSuffolk Coast Destination ManagementOrganisation Conference which has beenset up to try to extend the tourist seasonin our part of the world. Tim Rowan-Robinson, the DMO Chairman, spokeabout the need for businesses and

destinations to come together to helppromote themselves whilst Visit Englandtalked about what support they can give.

I was delighted to welcome AldeburghMusic and their guests to Downing Streetcelebrating the centenary year ofBenjamin Britten and Aldeburgh Music'sspecial singing project for schools - FridayAfternoons. It was a fantastic occasion aswe listened to some fabulous music fromthe Britten repertoire.

I am pleased that Leiston Football Clubhave received just under £12,000 toconstruct a new seating stand at LeistonTown Athletic Association Sports Ground. The money has come from the PremierLeague to help improve stadia at localclubs. It is so important our top leaguecontinues to help promote grass-rootssport.

Finally, the Equitable Life Paymentscheme has been now been extended to2015. I know many local people wereinvestors in Equitable Life and I am gladmost of them have now been paidcompensation. Due to the fact that someaddress information is over 20 years old ornon-existent not everybody that is entitledto compensation has come forward. If youthink you are eligible then I would urgeyou to contact the scheme.

Black Comedy

Friston Aldeburgh Players present PeterShaffer’s acclaimed farce, ‘Black Comedy’, atthe Jubilee Hall Aldeburgh on Thursday,Friday & Saturday, 5th, 6th & 7th December.

This is one of Shaffer’s masterpieces and isbased on the premise that when the stagelights are off and the audience can’t see, theactors can; and when the stage lights are on,the actors can’t see a thing! The result ishilarious.

Struggling artist Brindsley wants to impresshis fiancée’s visiting father, and a billionaireart collector so he dim-wittedly breaks into aneighbour’s flat and “borrows” the fancyfurniture.

But just as the last antique is set in place, afuse blows and the lights go out! A litany ofunexpected guests and mistaken identitiesthrow the evening into chaos—but thedarkness also sheds hilarious light oneveryone’s true character.

Friston Aldeburgh Players favourite’sSheena Griffiths, Derek Johnson GaryMoreland and Sebastian Allaby are joined bynewcomers Darren Scriven, Rebecca Han-de-Beaux and Natalie Barker for this evening ofmirth and merriment. The director is DavidCaddick.

The performances are at The Jubilee Hall,Aldeburgh on Thurs. 5, Fri. 6 & Sat. 7December 2013 at 7.30pm

Tickets are £8 and include wine & mince piesafter the show. The Box Office is: AldeburghMusic, High Street, Aldeburgh, 01728687110 (open Mon. to Sat., 10am–1pm and2pm–4pm)
