After eighteen full issues the Town Herald has come to a close, at least for the time being. This is due to falling ad revenues. The paper was completely dependent on advertising to cover costs and it couldn't raise enough for the printing of the February issue. This small pamphlet enables us to thank all readers, contributors and advertisers who have supported us to date. Joe Cassels, editor said: “This doesn't have to be the final end. I believe that small community news has a bright future in many places. It's merely a matter of working out the funding. In the present format, [that of full colour 16 page A5 booklet] and assuming printing prices don't rise significantly, it's possible to produce the Town Herald for approximately £5000 per year. Advertising might meet some of that total and it's well within the means of a community group to raise the remainder. Unfortunately, I'm not of independent means so can't fund this myself, but I'd be delighted to support or work with anyone who could! “I would like to thank everyone who has supported the Town Herald over the past couple of years, especially regular contributors Suzy Powling, Belinda Moore, Karen White, Rob Cawley and David Lee from Saxmundham Free School, Dr Therese Coffey MP, who has contributed to every issue and Penny Robertson, formerly of the Town Telegraph who offered continued advice and support. Our generous advertisers have been hugely supportive but some have gone over and above in their help. Notable patrons include, but are not limited to, Jackey L Jewellers, Patmore Softeners and Waitrose Saxmundham. They deserve special thanks. Bob Foyers of Bistro @thedeli has helped and supported above all. “No publication could exist without readers. I am most grateful to each and every one of ours.” After a recent visit to Snape, which was hit particularly hard by the recent flooding along with lower level flooding in Aldeburgh and Iken, I raised the issue of internal drainage boards with the Environment Secretary, Owen Patterson MP. Drainage boards have powers to secure water level management in specific locations up and down the country. The Secretary of State gave me assurances that their role will continued to be enhanced to ensure waterways are freed up and don’t become blocked. By continuing to allow drainage boards to make local decisions work will continue apace. In a debate in Parliament before Christmas I pressed the Minister to help the Council by fully funding of any urgent works that need to be carried out to repair any damage caused.  The Bellwin Scheme which enables Government to reimburse councils for costs incurred will be looked at by the Department  for  Communities  and  Local Government and it will be discussing with councils. I recently attended the Alde Valley School presentation evening. It was great to see success being celebrated for those pupils still at the school and those who had gone on to university. Sticking with the education theme, Suffolk schools will receive an extra £13m from the Government to help them meet the demand for school places. It is essential we ensure that every child has the chance to fulfil their potential and this funding is part of the long term plan to create an education system that gives our young people the skills they require to get on in life. I was delighted to attend the recent Rail Conference hosted by Suffolk County Council, where we heard from the Rail Minister, Stephen Hammond MP, on the task force that has been set up to improve the speed of trains from London to Suffolk. This builds on the work already underway to increase capacity on the line. The Minister really understands the need to improve rail services to our part of the Country and as one of the UKs leading growth areas top quality transport infrastructure is essential. I was delighted with the Chancellor’s recent pledge to reduce business rate liabilities. High street businesses with a rateable value up to £50,000 a year will receive a £1,000 reduction key for  businesses. Due to my previous landlords selling up I have just moved in to a new office in Felixstowe by the Triangle. I will publicise address and contact details shortly. www.townherald.co.uk Free! Cats Protection

Framlingham and Saxmundham Cats  Protectionsometimes has cats in care that are hard to home.These include those with an illness or disability;more mature felines and more surprisingly blackcats. These may spend many months in care beforefinding an ideal home. However, we never give uphope that there is a perfect home for all of them.

During   2013   we   had   two   particularly   difficultcases   of   cats   with   medical   problems.   Biscuit,   alarge, cuddly ginger male, came into CP care as hehad been living rough at a local factory. In poorcondition, a vet checkup, found he has the felineaids virus. This condition is not a death sentenceand FIV cats can live long lives, but it is best tohome them where they do not come into contactwith other cats. After several months of searchingBiscuit is now enjoying a wonderful home wherehe is the king of the castle with no other cats inthe household.

If  you are thinking of  homing a cat  in the nearfuture,   please   consider   a   cat   like   this.   Theadvantages and rewards are many;  older cats canmake wonderful companions and a black cat maynot be colourful but is just as likely to bring youthe   luck   and   joy   of   sharing   your   home   with   aloving feline.

For   more   details   about   the   cats   in   our   care, forthcoming  events   or   to   find   information  aboutthe   work   we   do   see   our   websitewww.framandsax.cats.org.uk   or telephone 01728723499  and   please   remember   to   mention  whereyou heard of us.
