Letter from the EditorAh yes, and yet another year of college has come to an end. But as we delightedlypack away our books and stuff our clothes haphazardly into suitcases in preparation forthat awesome <internship, vacation, job, insert your summer plans here>, we can't helpbut be a little nostalgic about leaving the Bryn Mawr campus, especially when it's finallygotten so warm and gorgeous. As for me, I won't be here in the fall for those joyous little reunions amongfriends― this year marks my graduation. I'll be trying my luck out in the corporate world, and have yet to discover what's out there. Meanwhile, I am proud to pass my editor-in-chief-dom to my two assistant editors, Sarah Bochicchio and Steffi Feldman, and amexcited to see what they come up with. I'm sure they have lots of ideas just waiting totake root and bloom. Best of luck to you, my dears. And to all of you readers, go outside, soak up a little Vitamin D (with proper SPFprotection, of course), and try to live every day with joy and no regrets.Adieu,Jessica TanEditor-in-Chief

Project Runway:Design & InspirationWritten by Tirsa Delate

Even if you are someone whodoes not actively participate in fashion, weare all part of a culture that is constantlyimmersed in it on the daily. Fashion is inmagazines, on the streets, on television, andon the internet. Project Runway, a show onthe Lifetime channel, is the epitome ofprograms featuring fashion design. It is oneof the many ways that fashion iscommunicated and modernized with thelatest trends and avant-garde styles and ishosted by the chic and sophisticated pair,Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. ProjectRunway is all about taking risks, creating

something new, and giving it your all to winthe ultimate prize.Project Runway is not onlyentertaining, seeing contestants going ateach other’s throats and presenting never-before-seen looks, but educational as well―educational in the art of fashion, that is. Onthe show, it’s sink or swim, and the othercompetitors are the sharks that smell blood. These contestants have to keep their sanityand use what resources are available tothem. In line with the metaphor for roomdraw this year (“May the odds ever be inyour favor”), Project Runway is arguablythe fashion version of The Hunger Games.Only one person can win, and it is do ordie. The fashion industry is cutthroat andcompetitive and only the best and mostdetermined upcoming designers get on theshow and succeed. Project Runwayexemplifies the indomitable and resilientnature of designers needed to succeed inthe fashion business.

In case you have never watched PR,as I have obsessively for the past two years,it is more interesting and fun to know theway the show works and how thecontestants are judged. PR takes place atParsons New School for Design in NewYork City. The show starts with sixteencontestants, and progressively eliminatesone (sometimes two!) designer per weekuntil after the final challenge, there are threedesigners left to show at New York FashionWeek. This is a monumental opportunityand honor for the designers, and they haveto create a twelve-piece collection in twelveweeks using a budget of $8000. Eachchallenge consists of a different theme, such as the unconventional challenge ofmaking a prom dress out of duct tape[check out how Mawrters fared at this taskon page 52] or a more mainstreamchallenge such as designing a prêt-à-porterdress for Lord & Taylor. For each challenge, which constitutesone episode, the designers receive a budgettypically around $150 but get up to $500depending on the challenge. The designersonly have thirty minutes to sketch a designand then go shopping at Mood DesignerFabrics store to buy the necessary fabricsfor their design without going over theirbudget. Tim Gunn oversees these trips toMood and gives his valuable advice to thedesigners as they bring their designs to life. The designers are provided with sewingmachines and accessories, but the rest ofthe success depends on raw and innovativetalent!

Designer: Michelle FranklinChallenge: Create a ready-to-wear design for Lord & Taylor. This winningdesign was featured at select Lord & Taylor locations.

Designer: Sonjia WilliamsChallenge: Make an outfit usingcandy and supplies from Dylan'sCandy Bar in Manhattan.

The show is for the toughest andmost focused designers as the maximumtime offered on the show for them to createan outfit (sometimes two!) is one to twodays. Here comes the fun part, but also themost crucial part of the challenge: thedesigners present their designs on modelsthat walk down the runway while the judgesrate their designs on a scale of one to five. The designers are almost always ecstatic tosee their outfits on the runway, but will thejudges feel the same way? These judgeshave high expectations and are hard toplease.

The judges are Heidi Klum (formersupermodel), Michael Kors (fashiondesigner), Zac Posen (fashion designer),and Nina Garcia (fashion director of MarieClaire magazine). After the designers’creations are sent down the runway, thebottom three designers and top threedesigners are announced. The winner ischosen out of the top three and is grantedimmunity for the following challenge andcannot be eliminated (this is only done forthe first few challenges so as not to grant aneasy pass to the final challenge). Thedesigner that goes home that week is

Designers: Michelle Franklin andAmanda ValentineChallenge: Working in teams of two, design and execute a prom dress madeentirely of Duck Brand duct tape.

chosen out of the bottom three designers. The judges provide commentary on eachdesigner’s outfit and give constructivefeedback and praise (or in some cases, relentless displeasure or even horror). After the final three contestants show atFashion Week and the winner is chosen, the winning designer receives $100,000 tostart her own line, a fashion spread inMarie Claire Magazine, a 2013 Lexus,$50,000 technology suite by HP and Intel, and the opportunity to design and sell acollection at Lord & Taylor. With a prizelike that, there will always be contendingdesigners. As an avid and very biased fan, Ithink everyone should watch PR becauseof the phenomenal creations that comeout of this show. I love watching thecontestants, who regardless of how farthey make it, grow as designers andexpand their design aesthetics. Friendshipsblossom out of the chaos of theworkroom, contrasting personalities clash, miracles occur when an outfit magicallycomes together at the end of the worktime, and designers share their ambitiousvisions. There are hilarious moments in PR,like when Michelle Lesniak Franklin(season 11) mimicks Nina Garcia’scriticism in the workroom to a runwayshow of male stripper clients wearingclothes made by the designers, whichwould not come off for the surprisestriptease (season 11)! Having personallymet Dmitry Sholokhov (winner of season10) at a Japanese café in New York, watching these brilliant and future fashiondesigners showcase their personality, passion, and innovation is even moreexhilarating. ♠

HepClo editor Jessica Tan sits down with artistJocelyn Moye to learn more about her unique craft.

I've already had the chance to see some of yourone-of-a-kind creations, but for those whoaren't as familiar with what you do, could youtell us a little bit about it?I make various types of jewelry(earrings, bracelets, necklaces, rings)with mostly recycled material―usually, I

buy jewelry and old leather coats in thriftstores. Occasionally, I do buy strands ofbeads from craft stores. Found objects arealso important: panes of broken glass aremy new exciting venture, and I've alwayscollected interesting rocks. My mom is anart educator, so tools and materials have

always been available to me. I don't think Iwould have made my wire wrapped rings ifthere wasn't any wire laying around thehouse.I love leather and metal. JeffreySebelia and Stella were my favorite ProjectRunway designers. I see myself in thatvein. Kat Von D isone of my styleinspirations. I reallyadmire women withtough senses of stylethat are stillappreciative offemininity and thefemale body. LizzyHale, Shirley Manson, and Kat definitely.I think my piecesare a mixture of mylove of toughmaterials, appreciationfor craftsmanship ofthe past as far asleather, metal, andother natural materials, and my love ofwhimsy. Sometimespeople comment onthe amount of featherdesigns I make. Girlswho wear feathers area special breed. Lotsof girls will look at thefeather earrings, maybe try them on,but it's the one-of-a-kind girl who will buythem. Personally, Ithink wearing feathersis a liberatingexperience, and onethat every womanshould have.

What inspired you to start making jewelrywith this distinct style to it?It started when I was maybe 18because I wanted a spiked bracelet onbrown leather. So, I took apart someof my accessories from middle school(I was kind of a punk) and usedleather scraps to make my firstbracelet. The look that I wanted wasone that was natural, yet edgy andreflective of music that I like. Hardrock can be so beautiful melodicallyand lyrically while the music is stillreally tough. Appetite for Destructionis the epitome of this for me. It's analbum that is vulnerable and vulgarsimultaneously. Inspired by music likethis, I make pieces that embody aworking tension.Music is a huge part of my life.I listen to an eclectic array (JeffBuckley, Fiona Apple, Ryan Adams)and heavier stuff. I can listen to metalall day long, and typically do when Iam designing, right now Trivium, TheLetter Black, and Kamelot. In high school I had a fashionblog (realprettyinblack.blogspot.com)all about musicians and their style.Something about musicians and theirdress has always interested me,especially people who don't really careabout fashion, but have a signaturelook like Lemmy Kilmister(Motorhead). This has definitely hadan effect on my not chasing trends, but choosing pieces that fit myexisting style instead. I think I tend tolike things that look better and betteras they age. Metal, denim, and a goodpair of boots are key. What is your best-seller item?A lot of my pieces are one of akind. Of the few bulk items that Imake are my leather bracelets withvintage square medallions, and thesesell pretty well.

"I make pieces that embodya working tension."

"I make pieces that embodya working tension."

How would you describe your personal style?I would say it is reflective of mydesigns - edgy but appreciative of theelements and softer things. I think some ofmy key materials (leather, bones, wood, feathers) harbor both of these traits, while Icombine others to make that juxtapositioncome to life. As a teenager I began toadmire the simplicity of men's clothing. Most days I wear a long Fruit of the Loomtank top, leggings, and boots. I don't reallywear men's clothing in an androgynous way.I go for the working-tension of looking likea woman in men’s clothing. I really don'tlike pants, but I love tooled leather beltsand motorcycle vests worn over dresses andmy floral print hoodie. I also have a sicktutu collection and I love vintage slips. I'dsay my style is hard and soft.

What are your future plans for your jewelry?I would love to revive my Etsy shopand sell outside of local flea markets andcraft fairs. It would be great to makecustom pieces for musicians, like Lizzy Halefrom Halestorm. I can see her in mypieces. This summer, I hope to get intoblacksmithing. ♠
