(Heb.11:4)

Henry Ward Beecher

Died

8th March 1887

Every man should keep a fair-sized cemetery in which to bury

the faults of his friends.

Do not burn the barn to get rid of the rats.

I never knew how to worship until I knew how to love.

It's easier to go down a hill than up it but the view is much better

at the top.

L ove cannot endure indifference. It needs to be wanted. L ike a

lamp, it needs to be fed out of the oil of another's heart, or its

flame burns low.

I can forgive, but I cannot forget, is only another way of saying, I

will not forgive. Forgiveness ought to be like a cancelled note -

torn in two, and burned up, so that it never can be shown

against one.

T he most important thing a father can do for his children is to

love their mother.

Do not scold people for not attending meetings. I do not believe

that any amount of whips or of skill could drive a swarm of bees

into a field where there were not a dozen flowers. T hey won·t go!

And to get them into a field where there are a thousand flowers,

there is no need for whips or driving.

T here is no such thing as white lies; a lie is as black as a coalpit,

and twice as foul.

A proud man is seldom a grateful man, for he never thinks he

gets as much as he deserves.

Sink the Bible to the bottom of the ocean, and still man's

obligations to God would be unchanged. He would have the same

path to tread, only his lamp and guide would be gone; the same

voyage to make, but his chart and compass would be overboard!

Some men always seem to confess in a general way ² never the

special sins that his neighbors see in him, but always the

doctrine of sin, and not the practice.

We should not judge people by their peak of excellence; but by

the distance they have traveled from the point where they

started.

T he true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given

it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never

persist in trying to set people right.

It is not the going out of port, but the coming in, that determines

the success of a voyage.

T here are a hundred men hacking at the branches of evil to every

one who is striking at the roots of evil.

It is one of the severest tests of friendship to tell your friend his

faults. So to love a man that you cannot bear to see a stain upon

him, and to speak painful truth through loving words, that is

friendship.

God pardons like a mother, who kisses the offense into

everlasting forgiveness.

Heaven will be inherited by every man who has heaven in his

soul.

What we want more than anything else in the world is, that men

who would go to the stake for the doctrine of total depravity shall

admit that they have some of it themselves, and that they are

making a brave fight to overcome it.

Compassion will cure more sins than condemnation.   T he Church is not a gallery for the exhibition of eminent

Christians, but a school for the education of imperfect ones.   We steal if we touch tomorrow. It is God's.

¶Friend, remember that it is better to read 1 quote 10 times

(meditatively) than to read 10 quotes 1 time (superficially).·
