International, and Microwave Foods. As many 4-Hers do, he began with Arts & Crafts and from that he moved on to computers and learned to design graphics for other projects. Alex also took the basics of sewing and made his own apron and chef’s hat among other things. He learned how to knit and took ‘Clothes You Buy’ which he competed in at state and placed in both categories. For the last several years Alex has participated in Shooting Sports including archery, .22 rifle, and shotgun. He has placed with his Country Cured hams at the State Fair and shown a steer for a number of years. Other projects Alex has taken include gardening, horticulture, leather working, hiking, health & fitness, first aid, entrepreneurship, public speaking, and leadership just to name a few. Of all these projects, Alex says he is able to choose a favorite. “I have always enjoyed taking cooking projects. I like to eat. I think I am a pretty good cook and know I will never go hungry because I can cook for myself and others. I am not afraid to try something new or create my own recipes. No one has ever gotten sick eating what I have made and I have even won a few cooking competitions as a 4-Her.” Leadership and character building are essential parts of 4-H and Alex has learned many lessons in both areas over the years. “As a West Central Regional Representative I have learned how to represent the interests of others. I have enjoyed my time on the State Council and look forward to serving one more year as I am running for a state officer position. I have enjoyed working with other council members to plan Teen Conference and State Congress. I hope to continue my involvement in these activities in the future as an adult chaperone,” he says. While all of these experiences will contribute to Alex’s future, he places the most importance on one area. “The most valuable lesson I have learned in 4-H is to be a good citizen and taking responsibility for myself. I have learned how to learn and how to learn from my mistakes. I think this will take me far in life as I continue into adulthood. I will be a lifelong learner and will be able to adapt to the changes life has to offer,” he says. Beyond teaching valuable lessons, 4-H also provides new experiences for members. “I have had many exciting experiences in 4-H so it is hard to name just one as the best,” says Alex. “I have attended National Congress in Atlanta, GA and enjoyed the tours of the city as well as meeting 4-H youth from all across the United States and Puerto Rico. I also enjoyed Legislative Academy in Jefferson City. I had the privilege of talking to legislators about the importance of 4-H in the lives of youth like myself. I was able to observe the legislators while they were on the floor filibustering and went behind the scenes for a night tour of the Capitol building including going out on the balcony. I gained a new respect for our legislators and the work they do.” Even with all of these great experiences, Alex isn’t done with 4-H yet. He has one more trip planned as a 4-H youth. In June he is going to attend the Citizenship Washington Focus Trip in Washington, D. C. and is looking forward to visiting the Nation’s capital. In the future, Alex plans to stay active as a 4-H volunteer. He still has younger siblings and Montrose Busy Beaver members to mentor and hopes to be

the caring mentor to them that others were to him. Someday, Alex foresees having his own children enrolled in 4-H and thinks the decision to join 4-H should be a simple one. “There are many excellent youth programs to be a part of but for me, I bleed 4-H green. I think everyone should give their child the opportunity to experience 4-H for themselves. For me, there was no better way to learn life skills, leadership, and citizenship. 4-H is for the entire family, not just the youth enrolled. I think 4-H grows stronger families,” says Alex. Alex’s club had a number of reasons for selecting him as the 4-Her of the month. “Alex Engeman was chosen to be the Montrose Busy Beavers outstanding 4-H member because he has been a contributing member of our club for over 13 years. He is has held membership in our club the longest and held every office and committee position in our club at one time or another. He has participated in all levels of 4-H; county, state, and national levels. He is an outstanding example to younger youth and we are proud to recognize him as our 4-Her of the Month. Alex has been recognized in 4-H as a Key Award recipient, Ronald Reagan Youth Leadership Award recipient, been awarded numerous Missouri Report Form Awards, Grand & Reserved Champion Country Cured Ham at the county level and premium money at the Missouri State Fair. He has achieved several Herdsmanship Awards and Rate of Gain Awards. He has competed in 4-H State Public Speaking, Fashion Revue, and Shooting Sports and placed. Alex has taken 4-H projects to the Missouri State Fair since he was 8 years old and participated in general, working and specialty demonstrations for which he was recognized. We wish him well in the future and remember once a Montrose Busy Beaver, always a Montrose Busy Beaver,” say the Busy Beavers.

Attendance Required Just a reminder as a 4-H member it is your responsibility to attend at least FOUR of your monthly club meetings in order to be a member in good standing. Only members in good standings can participate in the fair, livestock shows, state fair, horse shows, shooting sports activities, etc.

Presentation Day Presentation day is coming up sooner that you think! This year presentation day will be June 6, so now is a good time to start thinking about your demonstrations, public speaking, fashion revue, or table settings. There are numerous specialty demonstrations, each with special awards for the winner at the Missouri State Fair – and Henry County has had several 4-H members receive these awards! Let’s keep it up. Check out http://4h.missouri.edu/go/events/statefair/demoguidelines.htm for details about each of these demonstrations. There is also a chance to give a prepared speech, extemporaneous speech, video presentation, technology assisted speech, and interpretation. Public speaking offers an opportunity for everyone! Check out the guidelines at http://4h.missouri.edu/go/events/publicspeaking/categories.htm For more information about table settings visit the Extension Office website at extension.missouri.edu/henry. Start planning now. *There is no Specialty Horse Demo as previously advertised.*

Show-Me Wares at Henry County Fair Members are encouraged to apply to sell items during the Henry County Fair at the Show Me Wares event on Wednesday, July 15. Items sold should be raised or made by 4-Hers as part of a project. Baked goods are discouraged as this is not a bake sale and there will be a pie contest happening at the same time. Contact the Extension office by July 11 to sign up. Booths will be filled on a first come, first served basis.

Olde Glory Days Parade Henry County 4-H has been asked to help with the Sponsor Dinner at the Elks Lodge on July 2 from 4-7 pm. Sign up with the Extension Office. We will also have a float in the Olde Glory Days Parade this year. Please wear a 4-H shirt and be lined up in front of the Methodist Church on Wilson Street at 9:30. Taryn will need to see a parent drop off any 4-Her under 13 who is not accompanied by an older sibling and no 4-Her will exit the float until a parent meets them at the end of the parade. This is to protect the safety of our members. Please plan to attend!

Opportunity for Club Booths The Deepwater Labor Harvest Picnic on September 5, 6 and 7 is inviting 4-H Clubs to set up a game or craft booth at the event. Baked goods are welcome as well as raised food items and preserved items. Booth cost is $10-30.day. Call Bessie Thomas at 885-4954 or Carrie Lasswell at 525-3197 to sign up!

4-H Council Minutes Morgan Webb called the May 18 4-H Council meeting to order at 7:02 pm. The pledges were led by the officers and roll call was a sign in sheet. Taylor Henzlik read the secretary’s report there was a correction and minutes were approved with the correction. Alex Jones read the treasurer’s report with a current balance of $17,460. The report was approved as read. Club reports were given. The clubs represented were: Montrose Busy Beavers, Clinton Cougars, Clinton Cool Cats, Clinton Rockets, Mt. Zion Lions and Henry County Sharp Shooters. Clubs not represented were Shawnee Indians, and CCA Patriots. Old Business Taryn discussed 4-H camp for this year and that it would be a day camp this year with Camp Bob White being under construction and no other campsite was

available. Camp counselors will come and set up on June 8 and return on June 9 along with the campers. Taryn also stated that any scholarships that were going to be used for camp will be carried over for next year. A Carnival report was given and the total outcome was $6,158.45 with $4,000 of that being profit. The county fun day at Living Waters Ranch was also discussed; people who went said it was a lot of fun and that it should be done again next year. There was a problem with people signing up but not attending. There were 75 people signed up and only about around 45 people went and paid. Living Waters had planned for the 75 with employees and food, so there is a possibility their expenses were not covered. In the future, when 4-Hers sign up they will need to pay in advance as well. New Business Committee reports were given by a representative. The carnival committee was not in attendance but the date for next year will be March 19, 2016. Banquet & Awards gave the official date which will be October 10 at the United Methodist Church. The meal will be the same as last year where families bring side dishes, extension council provides the dessert and the extension office will take care of meat, rolls and everything else. Also photo organization still needs to be worked on. The Fair committee has almost everything ready there are still some questions about the schedule that Taryn will take to the Fair Board. The library will not be available this year to display items going to the State Fair so a new location needs to be looked into possibly in a window on the square somewhere. An area that is shaded will be needed, though, as some items would fade in the sun. The Presentation Day committee was not in attendance. Also the Budget will remain the same next year. Taryn asked if there was an interest to do something for The Old Glory Days Parade. It was suggested that we pull a trailer and hang the banners from it instead of walking this year. The Johnson family will provide the truck, trailer and hay bales. Zach Jones made a motion to accept this idea and Brendon Engeman seconded it. Motion passed. The parade is July 4 and we will need to line up at 9:30 am in front of the United Methodist Church. Dates for club leader orientation and officer candidates were discussed. Next year there will be a Clover Kid project at Henry Elementary one day a week and volunteers are needed. The next meeting is September 21st at 7 pm.

Montrose Busy Beavers Brendon Engeman called the May 20, 2015 meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. at the Montrose Park. Pledges were led by Keon Engeman and Bailey Carter. Members signed in and were asked, “What was your favorite summer event?” Jesse Henzlik moved and Keon Engeman seconded that the April minutes stand approved as presented. Taylor Henzlik reported a bank balance of $798.75. She wrote a check for $187.00 for county dues. Michelle Henzlik stated another $11 was still owed as a miscalculation of member’s dues was calculated. Jesse Henzlik moved and Bailey Carter seconded that the treasurer’s report stand approved. Motion carried. Old Business: Members met at 6:00 to collect trash for the Montrose Festival Committee. A motion to
