EXPERIENCE

EUROPEChapter One

Venice, Paris, Vienna, Prague, Budapest, London, Berlin, Istanbul — explore the wonders of Europe in its greatest cities

With its very name evoking a golden age of romance, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express travels between some of

Europe’s most famous cities every year between March and November. Paris, for example, is known as the ‘city of love’: couples stroll hand in hand along its grand boulevards and relax in sunny pavement cafés. The French capital is also home to some of the world’s most iconic attractions, including the Mona Lisa, Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower.

Across the Channel in London, ancient history mingles happily with contemporary culture, with super-modern skyscrapers such as The Shard standing cheek-by-jowl with historic landmarks like the Tower of London. Immerse yourself in the English capital’s world-famous museums and shops and sizzling West End shows. Museums abound in Vienna, too, where you can stroll around the hip

MuseumsQuartier and browse the boutiques on the Kohlmarkt. Grand palaces and pristine parks characterise the Austrian capital — as do waltzes, opera (Mozart, Beethoven and Strauss are former residents) and coffee houses.

When it comes to Venice, built on more than 100 small islands, delights await at every turn, from the world-famous Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge and St Mark’s Square with the Basilica, to pretty little canals and charming piazzas. Italy’s floating city has inspired a thousand poets and artists, from Byron to Canaletto. Back on terra firma, the quaint, winding streets of Prague are a blend of baroque, Renaissance, Art Nouveau and neoclassical architecture. Don’t miss the Charles Bridge and Astronomical Clock, and be sure to sample its delicious independent beers.

Take time to visit two vast cities that combine old and new like no other. Istanbul links East and West

EXPERIENCE EUROPE’S GREAT CITIES

From the bars of Berlin and the bazaars of Istanbul to the buzz of London and the beauty of Venice, embark on a voyage of

discovery on board the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express

across the Bosphorus: silks and spices are piled high in the Grand Bazaar as the ululating cry of the muezzin rings out over streets lined with slick bars. And the ancient cities of Buda and Pest join across the River Danube to form the Hungarian capital. Built on a series of geothermal springs, the city is a renowned spa-lovers’ paradise and is also famed for its café culture.

For a more contemporary experience, Berlin has become a sophisticated metropolis with chic sky bars, Michelin-starred restaurants and designer shopping enclaves in the 25 years since the Wall came down. Admire cutting-edge architecture, enjoy events such as the Berlin Film Festival, or simply relax in its cafés and stroll along the sweeping boulevards.

The finest way to travel between and experience these cities is on board our luxury train, which combines history with style and comfort.

WELCOME

ON BOARDChapter Two

A journey on the iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express combines sumptuous décor, gourmet dining and unmistakable romance

Board the Venice-Simplon-Orient Express and you are embarking on an adventure embraced by film stars, royalty and even

spies. Under one man’s mission to bring the train back to life, the vintage carriages were bought in 1977 and carefully restored for the train’s relaunch in 1982. Today, it is still one of the most desirable travel experiences in the world.

Each original 1920s car has its very own distinct character. Touches such as Ornate marquetry by Art Deco master René Prou and engraved glass panels by René Lalique all combine to create a sensation of vintage luxury.

Our twin cabins feature upper and lower berths, while single cabins have one lower berth. Crisp damask sheets and fine blankets contribute to a cosy and restful atmosphere at night; during

train and become part of its incredible history

glamour with Lalique glassware and art deco interiors, the Champagne Bar serves a selection of vintages. Alternatively, the Bar Car ‘3674’ offers a glamorous setting for aperitifs and nightcaps before or after dinner while listening to our resident pianist.

In keeping with the spirit of the occasion you can never be overdressed on board. During the day, smart daywear is appropriate excluding jeans, T-shirts or trainers. In the evenings, the minimum requirement for gentlemen is a jacket and tie; tuxedo is very much encouraged, with an equivalent standard for ladies. However, such is the ambience of the train that guests may wish to dress in their most glamorous finery.

the day, the berths are transformed to offer comfortable banquette seating from which to admire the views. A cabin suite formed of two inter-connecting twin cabins can be reserved, using one cabin as a living area and the other for sleeping, or as a lower berth bed in each.

There are three Restaurant Cars on board, featuring the marquetry of ‘Etoile du Nord’, the Lalique glass panels of ‘Côte d’Azur’ or the black lacquer of ‘L’Oriental’. Tables are dressed in fine white linen, fresh flowers and sparkling silver. Executive Chef Christian Bodiguel uses fresh ingredients, many sourced along the route, to create dishes that combine classic French cuisine with innovative twists.

Our booking conditions apply to the trips described in this brochure. These conditions are available on request by calling your nearest Reservation Office from the following locations:UK: 0845 077 2222 +44 (0)203 117 1300 US: +1 800 524 2420 (toll free) Singapore: +65 6395 0678 or online: belmond.com/termsandconditions

Our booking conditions contain important limitations and exclusions of liability. Please read them before we confirm your booking. Adequate travel insurance is vital. Details of a policy suitable to cover the arrangements you book are available from an advisor at RHG Insurance Brokers on +44 (0)1438 345714 or +44 (0)1438 345719 (please quote “VSOE Travel” when calling). We provide financial security for flight-inclusive Packages (a “Package” exists if you book a pre-arranged combination of at least two of the following components when sold or offered for sale at an inclusive price and when the service covers a period of more than 24 hours or includes overnight accommodation: (a) transport; (b) accommodation; (c) other tourist services not ancillary to transport or accommodation and accounting for a significant proportion of the Package) and ATOL protected flights by way of a bond held by the Civil Aviation Authority under ATOL number 3141.

Your Financial Protection: when you buy an ATOL protected flight or flight inclusive holiday from us you will receive an ATOL Certificate. This

lists what is financially protected, where you can get information on what this means for you and who to contact if things go wrong.

We, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, will provide you with the services listed on the ATOL Certificate (or a suitable alternative). In some cases, where neither we nor the supplier are able to do so for reasons of insolvency, an alternative ATOL holder may provide you with the services you have bought or a suitable alternative (at no extra cost to you). You agree to accept that in those circumstances the alternative ATOL holder will perform those obligations and you agree to pay any money outstanding to be paid by you under your contract to that alternative ATOL holder. However, you also agree that in some cases it will not be possible to appoint an alternative ATOL holder, in which case you will be entitled to make a claim under the ATOL scheme (or your credit card issuer where applicable).

If we, or the suppliers identified on your ATOL Certificate, are unable to provide the services listed (or a suitable alternative, through an alternative ATOL holder or otherwise) for reasons of insolvency, the Trustees of the Air Travel Trust may make a payment to (or confer a benefit on) you under the ATOL scheme. You agree that in return for such a payment or benefit you assign absolutely to those Trustees any claims which you have or may have arising out of or relating to the non-provision of the services, including any claim against us, the travel agent (or your credit card issuer where applicable).

You also agree that any such claims may be re-assigned to another body, if that other body has paid sums you have claimed under the ATOL scheme.

Not all holiday or travel services offered and sold by us will be protected by the ATOL scheme. Protection for all Packages not including flights is provided by means of a separate trust account in which all monies paid to us in respect of a Package will be held until the Package in question has been completely performed. Non-Package arrangements and arrangements not booked or departing from the UK are not protected by these arrangements.

On certain trips a minimum number of persons is required for the tour to take place. We will notify passengers at least 56 days before departure if a trip is cancelled for this reason. The applicable deposit (15% unless otherwise stated) must be paid to us when you book (or if booking within 56 days of departure, full payment must be made on booking).

If there are fewer than 12 passengers in your party, and if you have made your booking more than 56 days before departure and have paid a deposit to secure your booking, the balance of the cost of your arrangements (including any applicable surcharge) is due not less than 56 days prior to scheduled departure. If there are 12 or more passengers in your party, payments must be made as follows: 15% of the cost of your arrangements is payable on booking, a further 35% of such cost (including any applicable surcharge) is due 90 days before departure (if your booking is made between 90 and 56 days before departure).

If your booking is made less than 56 days before departure, you will be required to pay the entire cost of your arrangements at the time of your booking. If we do not receive (in cleared funds) the balance in full and on time, we reserve the right to treat your booking as cancelled by you, in which case cancellation charges will become payable. Cancellation charges apply in the event you or any member of your party cancels a confirmed booking. These charges will increase the closer to your departure date that you notify us of a cancellation.

We regret we are unable to offer you any assistance if you are delayed at the outward or homeward points of departure. Non-UK passport holders, including other EU nationals, should obtain up-to-date advice on passport and visa requirements from the Embassy, High Commission or Consulate of your destination or country(ies) through which they are travelling.

We reserve the right to amend the price of unsold trips at any time.

BOOKING CONDITIONS

3141Many of the flights and flight-inclusive holidays in this brochure are financially protected by the ATOL scheme. But ATOL protection does not apply to all holiday and travel services listed in this brochure. Please ask us to confirm what protection applies to your booking. If you do not receive an ATOL Certificate then the booking will not be ATOL protected. If you do receive an ATOL Certificate but parts of your trip are not listed on it, those parts will not be ATOL protected. Please see our booking conditions for information.
