In a rash of recent phone scams burning the telephone lines, the Henry County Police Department urges citizens to exercise caution when giving out personal information, particularly over the phone. The police department is reporting several phone scams where individuals pose as legitimate agents or officials and target residents in order to obtain personal information. One of the phone scams involves a caller claiming to be a local law enforcement official advising there is a warrant for your arrest. They say it can be remedied by providing credit or debit card information over the phone. Be advised that the Henry County Police Department never accepts credit or debit cards for citizen-requested services, such as background checks. Furthermore, any fines or fees related to offenses are handled by the courts, not by the police. Other reported scams include one where the caller claims to be from a federal agency, seeking to verify personal information and may even cite some of your information. Or the caller may say he or she is with Windows in an attempt to access your computer’s information. Police warn not to verify anything or allow anyone remote access to your computer, and not to visit any website they ask you to visit. There is also a scam offering a free medical alert system where the caller asks for personal information and credit/debit card numbers in order to steal money from unsuspecting citizens. The most recent phone scam encountered by police is a caller posing as a delivery person with UPS or FedEx and telling the homeowner they have a package for them. They then ask for the homeowner to state their address and ask if anyone is currently home. Potential victims are even provided a package tracking number to sound more legitimate. Police believe this latest scam is an attempt to burglarize or commit a criminal act and the criminal is trying to find out if the residence is occupied. the henry county update 1 BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS Called Meetings July 11th at 6:30 p.m. July 23rd at 6:30 p.m. Regular Meetings July 16th at 6:30 p.m. July 23rd at 6:30 p.m. August 6th at 9:00 a.m. August 20th at 6:30 p.m. Meetings held at: Administration Building Community Room 140 Henry Parkway McDonough, GA 30253 Commission meetings will air Fridays, Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays on Henry TV Channel 14 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99, at 9 a.m. & 7 p.m. Police Warn to Beware of Phone Scams July 11, 2013 Continued on Page 2

Police want citizens to know that there areapplications that allow people to call using fake phonenumbers, and criminals often obtain personal informationfrom public records, so just because the caller seems toknow certain information does not make him or herlegitimate. Take note of the number from which they arecalling and the company or organization they arerepresenting. If you feel the caller may be legitimate, ask for

their information and tell them that you will not provide anyanswers until you verify them. Then, look up the phonenumber for the organization and call for verification.

Police urge anyone who has been a victim of any ofthese scams to contact the Watch Office at the followinglocations: Headquarters at 770-288-8210/8328; North Precinct at 770-288-7573; Fairview Precinct at 770-389-6272.

Henry County has received a share of a $2 milliondividend declared by the Board of Trustees of the AssociationCounty Commissioners of Georgia – Interlocal RiskManagement Agency (ACCG-IRMA), which is the propertyand liability fund. Henry County’s dividend, in the amount of$84,491, will be applied in the form of a credit toward thecounty’s property and liability premium for the 2013-2014policy year and result in a slight savings in Henry County’sFY2014 budget.

The ACCG-IRMA is a non-profit Georgia countygovernment-owned insurance fund providing property andliability insurance coverage to its Georgia county memberssince its inception in 1987. Georgia law, enacted at therequest of Georgia county governments, allowed countygovernments to form non-profit insurance funds, whichoperate much like mutual insurance companies. These non-profit insurance funds allow Georgia county governments topurchase insurance coverage, at cost-efficient rates that aretypically better than a county could negotiate on its own. Thefund is owned by the Georgia county participants andmanaged by a Board of Trustees who represent participating

Georgia counties. The program is an efficient method offinancing insurable risks, which ultimately reduces insurancecosts for the county and benefits the taxpayers. Countiesparticipating in the ACCG insurance program also receiveextensive loss control and safety services to help mitigateand reduce claims.

“The $2 million dividend equals the largest in theprogram’s 25-year history,” said Charlie Newton, McDuffieCounty Chairman and chairman of the Board of Trustees.“This program provides an outstanding service to countiesand authorities throughout the state and allows us to cost-effectively manage our insurance needs.”

Any insurance premiums which are not used to payclaims and operating expenses, as well as any investmentincome earned on the premium while it is held to pay claims, belongs to the member county governments. The dividendsare possible because of favorable results in the investmentpremium dollars held in reserve to pay claims, as well as thesuccessful and dedicated management efforts on the part ofHenry County in promoting safety and implementing losscontrol techniques.
