INTRODUCTION

This course catalog has been prepared to assist you, the student, with class registration. You are encouraged to share its contents with your parents and to involve them in the selection of classes. Should questions or concerns arise concerning class registration, please feel free to contact the guidance office at the school. The school recognizes that all students are individuals with unique strengths and needs. Students should select classes that enable them to graduate and to grow in all areas of the curriculum. The administration, counselors, and staff recommend that students take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them while they are enrolled in high school. Students are challenged to select classes that will provide the best possible preparation based on their respective career interests, aptitudes, and abilities. For some students attending four-year colleges, this may mean additional English, math, science, foreign language, and social studies requirements plus a variety of elective classes. Other students attending community colleges, vocational/trade schools, military, apprenticeships, etc., may choose to concentrate more on the vocational offerings which will prepare them for the world of work and/or post-secondary education. Students should seek out the best educational program that their high school can provide. It will prove prudent not to settle for just getting by. It is imperative that student academic and career needs are met. Students should make every effort to obtain the most, well-rounded education possible.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Registration Guidelines In order to achieve a well-rounded education, students are encouraged to enroll in seven (7) class periods each semester, each year. Students will be enrolled using the following guidelines. The guidelines should be considered the minimum number of courses to be enrolled in.

9th Must be enrolled in 7 courses, 7 of which are graded with the A-F system 10th Must be enrolled in 7 courses, 7 of which are graded with the A-F system 11th Must be enrolled in 6 courses, 5 of which are graded with the A-F system 12th Must be enrolled in 5 courses, 4 of which are graded with the A-F system

Transfer students and special circumstances may be reviewed and approved on an individual student basis.

Dropping/Adding Courses Students will be discouraged from changing their schedules once the semester has begun. Requests for schedule changes will not be granted after the first 2 weeks of the semester. Students dropping a class after the first 2 weeks of the Semester will receive an “F” for the course. Changes prior to the 2 weeks will be granted after considering the following:

A. Placement; B. Schedule openings; C. Building procedures; and D. Supervision of students.

Dropping and Adding Due to Scheduling Misplacement If in the opinion of the teacher of the course in question, a student is failing the course due to being misplaced, a student may with the teacher’s and counselor’s consent be placed in a course more appropriate to the student’s ability level. This policy does not pertain to students who have enrolled in courses against both the counselors and teachers recommendation.

Exceptions to the number of courses required can be made for, but are not limited to, physician prescriptions, concurrent enrollment in Oregon Institute of Technology or Klamath Community College. Exceptions must be approved by the administration.

Counselor and Guidance Program The role of the counselor is to provide guidance and support to students and parents, to assist and serve as a resource person for teachers, to be a consultant to the administration as well as a liaison with outside agencies and a coordinator of counseling activities. The counselor will assist with the growth and development of individuals so that all may function at their highest level for their own benefit and

for that of society. The counselor will also serve as a liaison and communication link between the students, the parents, and the school.

Counselors will provide student services that oftentimes can help the student understand and develop positive self-concepts, move through individual levels of development, cope with their environment, develop positive life/career goals, and develop their abilities to function effectively in various life roles.

Counselors will provide assistance to students in scheduling classes to serve their needs in order to meet requirements for graduation.

Counselors assist students in gaining information concerning colleges, trade schools, vocational schools, apprenticeship programs, the armed forces, and a variety of job requirements.

Counselors provide students accessibility to various testing programs such as the SAT or ACT. Counselors also provide information for scholarship programs and other types of financial aid.

The school recognizes that all students are individuals with unique needs and strengths. Based upon these needs, the school supports a counseling and guidance program which helps students to function in a manner satisfactory to self, family, school, and community.

Parents and students are encouraged to use the counseling services that the school provides.

Yearly Schedule and Four-Year Plan Notice to Parents and Students It is imperative that students consider year-long scheduling. Once the year’s schedules are made, it is the intention of the guidance department to hold students to their schedule. Any necessary schedule changes must be made during the first two weeks of each semester and only with a written request from the parent and the approval of the principal or designee.

Four-Year Plan Freshman students will complete a four-year plan that will serve as a working document to help guide the student and parent when selecting courses while in high school. The four-year plan should also assist students in making decisions about their tentative career and post educational plans and the establishment of appropriate goals.

POLICIES AND ADMINISTRATIVE REGULATIONS

Graduation Requirements Policy The Board will establish graduation requirements, which meet or exceed state standards. Those requirements will be published yearly for students and their parents/guardians. A diploma will be awarded to each student who has satisfactorily completed all state and local requirements for units of credit and attendance. Alternative certificates and diplomas are available for students who have demonstrated the inability to meet the full set of academic standards established by the State Board of Education for a diploma while receiving modifications and accommodations. Graduation diplomas will not be granted to foreign exchange students. Foreign exchange students will be provided an honorary diploma at the end of the school year and they will receive special recognition for attendance from the school they attend in accordance with the procedures developed by the high school. Seniors transferring into the Klamath County School District will be permitted to graduate if they meet the requirements of the school they transferred from if the Klamath County School District requirements cannot be met.

Graduation Exercises Because the Board believes that completion of the requirements for a diploma from the public schools is an achievement that improves the community as well as the individual, the Board wishes to recognize that achievement in a publicly celebrated graduation exercise. Accordingly, appropriate graduation programs will be planned by high school principals, on the date or dates selected by the Board. The district’s valedictorian(s), salutatorian(s), or others at the discretion of the building principal or designee may be permitted to speak as part of the district’s planned graduation program. All such speeches will be reviewed and approved in advance by the building principal or designee. All students in good standing who have successfully completed the requirements for a senior high school diploma, a senior high school modified diploma, or are within one credit of earning a regular or modified diploma may participate in graduation ceremonies.

Graduation Requirements In addition to Cohort Graduation Requirements, Henley High School requires successful completion of a senior project. Activities and assignments comprising the project are accomplished in social studies and English classes during the student’s junior and senior years. To graduate from Henley High School, students must be enrolled in and pass Senior English and successfully complete the senior project. To pass the senior project, students must receive a C or better on their project, paper and oral presentation.

Early Graduation Policy A student who, for educational and vocational reasons, wishes to graduate from high school in less time than the ordinary grade 9-12 sequence may request permission to complete graduation requirements on an altered schedule. The student and his/her parents/guardians will consult with high school guidance personnel to develop a graduation plan. In order to pursue this opportunity, students shall state their intention in writing, accompanied by a written plan stating how the student proposes to meet the necessary requirements for early graduation to the Superintendent no later than October 15th of their junior year. In the event that the October 15th date cannot be met, a letter of explanation outlining the circumstances that prevented complying with the October 15th deadline shall be sent to and approved by the Superintendent. Transfer students and special circumstances may be reviewed and approved by the Superintendent.

Pass/Fail Policy It is the policy that Klamath County School District students (grades 9-12) have the option to receive a Pass/Fail for up to one (1) elective credit per year. A student could accumulate a total of four (4) credits of Pass/Fail during his/her four (4) years of high school. 1. The Pass/Fail applies to elective classes only, or to a class, which the student does not

need as a required class and wishes to take as an elective class. 2. Pass/Fail will be given for semester grades only. 3. A Pass/Fail may affect the cumulative grade point average (GPA). 4. Students opting for the Pass/Fail must make their requests known in writing to a counselor as

soon as possible, but not later than four weeks before the end of the semester. The request must be signed by the student’s parent/guardian, teacher, counselor, and principal in order to be implemented. The final determination will be made by the principal. Once the Pass/Fail form has been completed and approved, the decision is irreversible.

5. For students to receive or be eligible for Pass/Fail, they must have:

A. Demonstrated appropriate attendance; B. Demonstrated appropriate citizenship; and C. Demonstrated appropriate efforts in achieving the course objective.

6. You will be ineligible for an Honors diploma if you choose to take a class Pass/Fail other than

classes that are only offered Pass/Fail (i.e. Teacher aide, Office aide)

Students Retaking Classes for Credit Students who fail state or district requirements must take these classes again and receive a passing grade. Students who fail elective classes may choose to take the class over. Students who receive a low grade in a class may choose to take the class over for their own benefit for elective credit. However, students who take classes over will have the failing or low grade removed from their transcript.

Credit for Students Transferring From Accredited and Non-Accredited High Schools Students transferring to Klamath County School District high schools from accredited or appropriately registered and approved private, religious, or alternative high schools may, at the principal’s discretion, receive credits for classes (except religious classes) for which they have earned credit at their previous high school. In addition, these students may take challenge exams to earn additional credits needed to graduate according to their class status at the time of transfer. Credits of transfer students from an appropriate public or private alternative program of instruction that is registered with and approved by the Oregon Department of Education, or accredited by the Northwest Accreditation Commission, or the accreditation association in the state where they last attended school will be accepted. Klamath County School District will not accept credits of transfer students from schools that are non-standard, or are not registered, with, and approved by the Oregon Department of Education, or approved in a similar manner by the state where they last attended school. Home study programs through a non-accredited source will fall under non-accredited transfer credit guidelines.

Credit Options Students may earn high school optional credits for the following experiences:

1. College or high school level courses; 2. Work experience; 3. Independent study; and 4. Credit by exam. Students who wish to earn optional credits must apply to the high school principal prior to enrollment in the course. A maximum of eight (8) units of high school optional credits will be counted towards graduation.

V-Tel (two way interactive video classrooms) Klamath County School District has equipped all of the high schools with classrooms that can communicate with each other as well as many other sites around Oregon and the United States. Classes will be taught each period next year from one or more of our high schools. This will expand instructional opportunities for many of our students. Exact courses will be announced in April. If you have questions, please ask your counselor.

Credit by Examination Klamath County School District will offer credit and/or competencies earned by examination. Those courses for which credit by examination may be earned will be determined by the Superintendent or his designee.

16

Page 17: HENLEY HIGH SCHOOL - kcsd.k12.or.usHENLEY HIGH SCHOOL . 2011-2012 . Course Catalog . If you have a disability and need this publication in an alternate format, please contact the Klamath

Examinations for these courses will be provided by the district curriculum department and will be given the second week of each semester. Credit by examination is to be considered a process for ascertaining student competency and awarding credit for a particular course offered at the high school without the student having to enroll or participate in the course. All students must file an application with the school counseling/guidance department at least three (3) days prior to the date of examination. The application must include approval indicated by a signature of a parent or guardian. All applications must receive the approval of the building principal and the district curriculum director. Students may attempt the examinations only twice and these attempts may not occur within the same semester. Students may not attempt credit by examination for a course in which they are enrolled. A student may not attempt credit by examination for a sequential course below the level at which the student has or is enrolled or below the general level of expectation for students. A credit earned (CE) will be given only if the examination is passed. No student may earn more than four (4) credits through credit by examination that will count toward graduation. The district curriculum director and the building principal shall administer this program. They will work with building department chairpersons and individual teachers to assist with: 1. Developing examinations either written or based on observable indicators of competence, which

shall clearly demonstrate learner outcomes of the course being challenged. 2. Determining standards of performance or examinations, which will be accepted as evidence of

satisfactory completion of course requirements. 3. Determining when an appropriate examination has been devised to measure course completion

equivalency and when the test shall be used. 4. Establishing examination dates and locations. 5. Publishing credit by examination procedures and courses for which credit by examination may be

attempted. 6. Reviewing student requests for credit by examination where guidelines are not sufficient. 7. Scoring examinations. When a student successfully passes an examination for a course by the process of credit by examination, he/she shall be given credit for the course. The enrollment requirement of the course, if any, shall be waived. Credit (CE), but no grade for the course will be noted on his/her transcript and the course will count toward graduation requirements, both in units and in required course enrollment.

Off-Campus Study Credits Klamath County School District will offer credit in the following off-campus experiences: 1. College or high school level courses; 2. Work experience, and; 3. Independent study. Students wishing to apply for off-campus experience credit shall file an application with the guidance office prior to enrolling in any program or class. This application shall include student goals, the name of the class or nature of the program under consideration, principal and district curriculum director

College Credit While In High School Understanding the importance of providing an academically challenging curriculum for some of our most talented students, the Klamath County School District has adopted three separate programs whereby students can earn college credit while enrolled in high school. Each of these programs has unique guidelines and advantages to the student participating in them.

OIT/High School Advanced Credit Program Introduction The OIT/High School Advanced Credit Program consists of college courses taught in the high school by regular high school faculty. Generally these classes are offered as part of the regular high school curriculum, and students have the option of registering for college credit. Credits earned in these courses are standard college credits and are transcripted by the OIT Registrar’s Office. Benefits Students have the opportunity to begin their college education while still in high school without needing to travel to the college campus. A possible exception to this may consist of an occasional lab session or special lecture held at OIT or another participating school. Because the courses are sponsored, students receive a significant tuition reduction. The program can also help students gain experience with college-type courses. The high school benefits from an enriched curriculum and relationship established between the high school and OIT. By providing the opportunity for students to start earning college credit while completing their high school studies, the school better serves the learning needs of their constituents and takes a positive step toward involving students in establishing future goals. The college also benefits from the collegial relationships established between the high school and college faculty. High school students gain familiarity with college course work and develop a relationship with OIT. Transferability of Credits All courses offered in this program are regular OIT classes in every respect, including standard numbering, titles, descriptions, and credits. It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to check on the transferability of credit to the institution(s) of their choice. Should parents and/or students have questions about transferability of credits to out-of state colleges or universities, they should contact OIT’s Director of Continuing Education.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE-HS ADVANCED CREDIT PROGRAM

Introduction Community colleges from around the state are pleased to offer our high school students an opportunity to earn community college credits at their local high schools. This articulation option is applied primarily to vocational technical course offerings that have been defined by the joint efforts of our high schools and community college personnel. This program, entitled “2+2 Tech Prep Program,” was based on Dale Parnell’s model which offers high school students a four-year pathway including the last two years of high school plus two years of a community college associate degree program. Students who choose 2+2 Tech Prep credits commit to a well-planned curriculum between the high schools and community college leading to an associate degree in a particular occupational area. The 2+2 Tech Prep credit also allows students to receive college credit for certain high school classes even if they are not certain of their occupational future. Students may also decide that they wish to continue on to complete a four-year degree and thus expand to a 2+2+2 concept whereby students may fulfill some division requirements while at community college. Benefits

1. Students have the opportunity to earn community college credits while in high school without the necessity of traveling to the community college campus.

2. Our high schools and community college curriculums are better organized to compliment one another, thus improving the educational opportunities for our students.

3. Community college credit is very affordable.

So How Do I Get 2+2 Tech Prep Credits? 1. Complete high school equivalent courses with a grade of “A” or “B.”

2. Attach fee with registration form provided by your teachers.

3. Give registration form and check to your teacher who will then forward them to the community college to be put on a transcript.

Transferability of Credits Alpha-numeric community college course numbers (i.e., BA 101, OA 121, etc.) are transferable to four-year colleges. Course numbers designated only by number (i.e., 6.134, 3.205, etc.) are vocational technical and are transferable to other community colleges, or sometimes, as electives to four-year colleges. Your vocational technical high school teacher and counselor will be able to advise you and answer questions related to this credit opportunity.

EARLY ENTRY PROGRAM This transition program offers a seamless education concept, which allows approved students to attend college level courses at OIT while they are still enrolled in high school. This program not only offers students an excellent opportunity to enhance their formal high school education, but also represents a significant savings financially due to the reduced tuition rate. Once students have been approved to participate in this program, they may enroll in most of OIT’s 100 and 200 level courses. Since the program was developed to enhance a student’s high school experience and not substitute for it, students will only be allowed to take courses that are not taught in the high school. Additional information regarding this exciting opportunity is available in the guidance office.

STUDENTS CONSIDERING A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE

Students should be aware that Graduation is a minimum requirement and is not sufficient to meet entrance requirements at colleges. Students who intend to continue formal education at a college or a university should consult with a counselor when planning schedules. Since most colleges and universities have differing standards and requirements, the counselor will be able to advise which courses are needed to pursue personal interest as well as those needed for admission. Students should build their four-year plans around these proposed requirements. Specific requirements have been established for entrance to all colleges and universities in the Oregon University System. The Oregon University System includes the following universities:

Eastern Oregon University

Oregon Institute of Technology

Oregon State University

OSU Cascades

Portland State University

Southern Oregon University

University of Oregon

Western Oregon University

COMMUNITY COLLEGE REQUIREMENTS

Oregon community colleges provide academic (college) transfer and professional technical programs. Generally speaking, community colleges have open enrollment. In some community college programs, limited enrollments are a factor for admission, and, in some cases, special requirements are needed for enrollment. All students must have a high school diploma or a GED. Consult your counselor for individual school requirements.
