HCfE Celebrates Ten Year Anniversary
The Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship is celebrating its tenth
year since forming back in 2007. As part of the celebrations HCfE
staff have been reflecting on the Centre’s origins, along with the
Centre’s mission and aims for the future, by writing up an ‘Origins
and Overview’ document. This document is designed to provide
outsiders with an understanding of HCfE’s background,
pioneering research, projects and initiatives.
Prof Andrew Godley, lead-author of the ‘Origins and Overview’ document
Prof Andrew Godley, Academic Director for HCfE, spoke about
the purpose of the document:
“Our intention is that the document is a resource for all of us to
draw on and use as needed in future discussions, presentations,
bidding documents and other activities. Producing the document
has been a joint effort and my sincere thanks go to my co-authors
Jurek Sikorski, Keith Heron and Dr Marrisa Joseph.”

Entrepreneurship Society Delivers
Events for Students
The student-led Entrepreneurship Society has grown its
membership and is delivering more events than ever. Over the last
six months, the Entrepreneurship Society has held many events.
Here are some of the highlights:
10th October 2016: ‘Young Entrepreneurs’ Talk, with Guest
Speaker Ollie Forsyth
Over 60 students attended a talk led by Ollie Forsyth, the founder
of TBE Club, TBE Magazine and Ollie's Shop, as well as co-
founder of Unibell. Ollie talked about his previous year in
business and current ventures including the TBE Club’s launch
and the plans for the continuing growth of Ollie’s Shop. His talk
was filled with useful tips on making it by yourself, how to build
your network, the difficulty in legal and accounting aspects and
how to find your passion in changing the world.
“A brilliant talk to get the ball running this year” – Emily Large,
Event Manager

26th October 2016: ‘Talks by Leading Entrepreneurs’ Event,
with Guest Speaker Julianne Ponan
Julianne Ponan, CEO Creative Nature, gave an inspiring talk on
her attitude towards business. She highlighted to the audience the
importance of a personal passion in business, which can stem from
personal experiences where you can stumble across a problem that
many are suffering from. In Julianne’s situation it was promoting
health and superfoods in an ethical and environmental way and the
society members gained some major insights into both the food
industry and forming a business from the foundations up.

14th November 2016: ‘Business Management in Finance
Uncovered’ Talk, with Guest Speakers from Fidelity
Four members of financial services company Fidelity came to
Henley Business School to talk about their experiences, focusing
on bringing together critical thinking, capability and a fresh
approach to help drive change and implement innovative solutions
across an organisation. The guest speakers discussed interactive
games and how clients must be at the heart of every business and
its investment decisions.
18th January 2017: Founders Q&A Panel
Four experienced entrepreneurs made up a panel of experts that
answered questions from the audience. The panel members were:
Tim Brownstone – CEO of KYMIRA
Seth Allen – CEO of Agribusiness Academy
Charlotte Roach – Founder of Rabble
Emma Cranstoun – Co-Founder of Scrubbingtons
This event worked well due to its unique question and answer
format, allowing for the best possible engagement from the
audience. From the questions a group conversation grew and
several subjects were debated. The talk covered various aspects of
an entrepreneur’s life and each business was from a different
background and industry, which helped to push the important
message of picking your own passion to build your empire on.
1st February 2017: ‘How to Get Your Product to Market’
Talk, with Guest Speaker Thor Mitchell
Thor Mitchell, Chief Product Officer at equity crowdfunding
platform Crowdcube, spoke to the society members about the
manager’s perspective of getting a product out to the market.
Thor’s previous experience of working at Google for nine years as
an Engineer and Product Manager shone through as he discussed
the planning, networking and many more important factors that
are essential to getting a new product out on the shelves.

Reading’s app and collaborate on huge projects in conjunction
with Apple, Google, Amazon Web Services and Judo. Piers, along
with two of his colleagues, talked about his work and history,
before taking the students through a 10 step guide on setting up an
app. These steps ranged from building a wireframe to selling to
huge investors and Piers also gave insights on some of the best
software to use, what makes each unique and how they will

HCfE Events Deliver Great Insights for
Students and SMEs
Talks on Enterprise Development
Juliette Stacey, Group CEO of Mabey Holdings, delivered a talk
titled ‘Shoring your Foundation for Growth’ on 20th March 2017.
Juliette Stacey, Group CEO of Mabey Holdings
Addressing an audience of SMEs and Masters in Entrepreneurship
students, Juliette shared her personal experiences of developing a
high growth business. Juliette revealed how a business can start
strong with a vision but then lose momentum and have its very
survival threatened. She spoke passionately about Mabey’s
journey from a family run business to a business run by a board of
external professional managers and covered how Mabey had
withstood a “storm” to come through the other side, looking to a
4 ©Henley Business School, 2017
bright future of digital engineering and robotic manufacturing.
Juliette said that her company’s policy was to “hire talented before
you need them” and spoke in depth about training and support for
staff and she ended her talk by discussing how to best explain the
impact Mabey has had:
“It has been difficult to describe what Mabey does without talking
about engineering and we’ve had many an attempt to find a simple
description. Mabey enables communities to live and grow.”
The talk by Juliette followed an equally successful talk by Sean
Taylor, CEO of Redwood Technologies Group on 12th October
2016.
Sean Taylor, CEO of Redwood Technologies Group
There was a real sense of honesty and insightfulness about the
talk, titled ‘Survival and Growth using Re-invention’. The talk
was given by Sean, who with his brother Martin co-founded
Redwood Technologies in 1993.
A computer scientist who graduated from King’s College London,
Sean has built a very successful international company serving
many of the large companies from Panasonic to HSBC to AXA to
Vodafone in over 50 countries. Redwood Technologies, which in
2016 won the ‘Queen’s Awards for Enterprise: Innovation’, grew
by over 30% and in 2017 will grow by more.
Speakers’ Panels
On 10th November 2016 HCfE hosted a Speakers’ Panel titled
‘Leadership 4.0 – Successful Leadership in the Fourth Industrial
Revolution’.
Prof Andrew Godley, Academic Director of HCfE, opened the
event and described how businesses and universities are working
together to better understand leadership and provide insights to
help business leaders, as exemplified by the Digital Leadership
Forum at Henley Business School. You can find out more at
http://www.henley.ac.uk/digital-leadership/forum
The panel consisted of four SME business leaders – Claire
Edmunds, Founder and CEO of Clarify, Sam Clark, Founder and
MD of Conjure, Dan Daly, CEO and Co-founder of Lein Applied
Diagnostics, and David Taylor, MD of Prodrive Advance
Technology. Between them they shared their experiences and
collectively highlighted the importance of engaging all employees
in innovation and adopting digital technologies.
Claire Edmunds, CEO of Clarify Sam Clark, MD of Conjure
Claire raised what is recognised by many as an important aspect of
leadership, especially in the new age of rapidly advancing
technologies: setting the ‘values’ and conducting business on the
basis of having values that guide and build a culture of fulfilling
not just business objectives, but employee satisfaction and
development.
Sam shared stories of working with likes of McLaren, the British
Museum and Jaguar Land Rover and emphasised how important it
is to connect with and work closely with customers, listening to
what they need. What is refreshing about Conjure and what
exemplifies Sam’s leadership is that he encourages all employees
to tinker, develop and experiment with the latest digital
technology tools. This ensures Conjure finds and adopts those that
make a difference, allowing Conjure to stay ahead of the curve.
Sam added that “all tools used at Conjure are cloud based”.
On 20th February 2017 HCfE hosted the ‘Building a Sustainable
Competitive Advantage’ Speakers’ Panel. The purpose of this
Speakers’ Panel was to address the question ‘how do we succeed
in the long term?’ by revealing what several ambitious SMEs are
practicing.
Jurek Sikorski, Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship Executive Director
Opening the presentations was Jurek Sikorski, Executive Director
for HCfE. Jurek spoke about the three critical success factors that
were needed to sustain a competitive advantage: strong intellectual
property, a viable business model and superior organizational
processes, capabilities and resources.
The first speaker was Jon Harrison, Director of Professional
Services for Fairsail. Jon talked about the three things that have
given Fairsail a competitive advantage: people, an innovative
product and an amazing customer experience.

Jon Harrison, Director of Professional Services for Fairsail
Following Jon was Claire Hewitt, Managing Director of PCG
System Solutions. Claire described the company’s history, both
pre- and post-acquirement by a US based firm, and described
PCG’s sustainable competitive advantage to be a focus on people,
markets and the business model, along with making brave choices
and new product development and IP creation.
Claire Hewitt, Managing Director of PCG System Solutions
The next speaker was the Founder and CEO of SoundOut, David
Courtier-Dutton. David displayed the six pieces of SoundOut’s
competitive advantage: technology, panel quality and speed,
automation, a unified research platform, a route to market and a
low cost and high margin.
David Courtier-Dutton, Founder and CEO of SoundOut
Last to speak was Dr Jamie Wilson, Founder and CEO of
HomeTouch. Jamie’s company addresses the growing problem of
enabling families to find a trusted and life time carer for loved
ones. Jamie’s solution was simple but innovative; an online
marketplace connecting vetted carers with care seekers, bypassing
the traditional home care agency which does little to address the
need for trusted lifetime care.
Dr Jamie Wilson, Founder and CEO of HomeTouch
After Jamie had spoken, the audience had a chance to ask
questions. The Q&A picked up a number of other factors
important in building a sustainable competitive advantage,
including ‘speed’ in execution, rewarding people for their
contribution in the form of share options as well as bonus
payment, and awarding recognition and having ‘fun’.

Rise in Graduates Endorsed for Tier
One (Graduate Entrepreneur) Visa
Three recent graduates, Noopur Johri, Karla Pena and Sungok
Kim, have been endorsed by HCfE for their Tier One (Graduate
Entrepreneur) visa this year. The Tier One visa allows graduates
from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland to stay
in the UK after finishing their studies, on the basis that they have a
genuine and credible business idea that they are looking to
establish and are endorsed by a university.
HCfE Newsletter
©Henley Business School, 2017 7
The number of endorsements issued is higher than the number
issued during 2015-2016. Subject to the visa scheme continuing
next year, HCfE expects the number to increase again in 2017-
2018.
Speaking about her endorsement, Noopur said:
“It gives me the opportunity to transform my business idea into
reality and contribute towards the UK economy. The support of
the Henley Centre for Entrepreneurship in my endeavour is very
encouraging and motivating. The mentors at the Centre have been
extremely supportive; the business idea clinic with Jurek made us
think of various possibilities, challenge assumptions and opened
us up to the reality of actually executing an idea in the practical
business environment.”

HCfE Hosts Visitors From MGIMO,
Russia
Two separate visits from Moscow State Institute of International
Relations (MGIMO) were hosted by HCfE earlier this year, in
collaboration with the Centre for Euro-Asian Studies.
Three directors from MGIMO Incubator visited Henley Business
School on 27th and 28th February 2017 for discussion with HCfE
after receiving a grant of over £70,000 from the British Embassy
in Russia to develop the project titled ‘Business Incubation 3.0:
Networking for sustainable growth, entrepreneurship support and
best practices exchange’.
The visit was organised to share and exchange knowledge and
practices in supporting start-up businesses. The four guests, Yury
Sumin, Timur Radaev, Alena Arhipova and Tatiana Kamenskaia,
came as a delegation of the winners among the best Directors of
Russian Business Incubators.
During the first day the MGIMO guests were welcomed by Yelena
Kalyuzhnova, Director of CEAS, and Andrew Godley, Academic
Director of HCfE. The guests spent the whole day with Jurek
Sikorski, Executive Director of HCfE, who presented the range of
extracurricular events and initiatives that help students launch
their entrepreneurial career.
The guests toured the Henley Start-Up Business Incubator and
Andrew Godley spoke about the history of entrepreneurship and
the ambitions of HCfE to expand and create a strong and world
class entrepreneurship ecosystem.
The visitors also spent their time at the Innovation Works Centre
and heard from Tim Brownstone, CEO of sportswear company
KYMIRA. Tim shared his story about his business and how HCfE
and the Incubator have helped him start and grow his company to
where it is today, selling in all continents of the world.

For the second day, the four MGIMO visitors spoke with members
of the Leadership, Organisations and Behaviour faculty. Keith
Heron discussed possible teaching avenues and opportunities with
the representatives of the Russian business community, whilst Dr
Norbert Morawetz and Dr Maks Belitski gave an open lecture.
The guests were impressed by the professionalism of the Henley
Business School’s staff and the exceptional quality of the
facilities, stating that they felt there were “fantastic facilities to
conduct business”.
In March 2017 HCfE entertained two postgraduate students from
Russia: Andrew Reduto, who won the university start-up
competition and studies modern aspects of marketing activities in
European telecommunications companies, and Anastasia
Krasenkova, who manages the MGIMO incubator projects and
studies industrial marketing of goods and services. The students
came to Henley Business School for one week as part of an
educational trip to the UK, under the support of the UK Embassy.
During their time at Henley Business School, the students visited
several lectures and had a chance to talk to both MBA and MSc
Entrepreneurship students. They were hosted by Keith Heron,
Director of MSc Entrepreneurship Programmes, and had detailed
mentoring with Jurek Sikorski, Executive Director of HCfE.
The students were pleased that during the trip they acquired many
valuable long-term contacts, which will prove to be important for
the future collaboration of MGIMO and Henley.

Alex Baker Runs Writing Workshops
for Forest School Pupils
Alex Baker, HCfE’s Support Administrator, ran a series of fun
creative writing workshops for pupils at Forest School in January
and February 2017.
In his free time Alex volunteers at Wokingham Library, where he
runs a creative writing club called Igniting Writing for 11-18 year
olds to encourage entrepreneurial ideas and develop their
storytelling and writing skills. The sessions at Wokingham Library
have been running since 2014, attracting over 20 members per
session, and Alex has been expanding to cover invitations to
several local schools, including Bulmershe, Edgbarrow and St
Crispin’s.
Alex Baker, left, and Sarah Kennedy, right, at Forest School library
Alex spoke in glowing terms about the imagination the pupils
showed:
“I was impressed by the creativity on display. Writing can be seen
as a solitary activity, so it was great to see the pupils sharing their
ideas and creating such imaginative stories out of the prompts
they were given.”
Sarah Kennedy, the Forest School librarian, was equally positive:
“I think the Igniting Writing sessions helped some boys who have
not been inspired by the usual English lessons. Several pupils who
usually struggle responded really well to the writing exercises!”
