A CASE OF HEMORRHAGIC

GASTROENTERITIS

— IN A NINE YEAR OLD LABRADOR —

THE CASE

12 Sept. 1984: The dog was brought in for consultation by the owners' son who could report only that the dog had vomited and that the vomit contained blood. The mother had reported that the dog also trembled. When I saw the animal, I got the impression that it was dying. It seemed totally wiped out, the head was hanging down, the legs could barely support him and the back was curved. The eyes lay deep in their sockets and were dull and expressionless. The pulse was 140 (normal rate is 60-80), the temperature 38°C (normal 38.5-39°C).* No rumbling audible in the intestines. The contents of the intestines was liquid. I made a preliminary diagnosis of gastroenteritis with hemorrhage and developing sepsis. In the absence of any other indication, I gave the animal a dose of Pyrogenium. The son took the animal home with instructions to inform me as soon as the picture changed.

RX ARSENICUM ALBUM 200

Arsenicum album 200C: 1 dose every 10 minutes for 1 hour. Then every 4 hours until change in condition. Two hours later, the animal was somewhat quieter. There was no more vomiting, but twice there was diarrhea with blood. The expression of the eyes was improved. The next morning, the animal went on its usual walk, but was quickly tired out. 24 hours after the first dose, the animal was ready to eat again. 14 Sept. 1984: The animal is completely recovered.
