2. 2014 process for defining report content and aspect boundariesEveryyear,werevisitourmaterialityprocesstoensurethatpreviousassessmentsarestillvalidandtoassessifanyadditionalrelevanttopicsneedtobeconsideredorlessrelevanttopicsremoved.Notopicswereremovedin2014butwehaveregroupedandrecategorisedsometopicsinresponsetostakeholderqueriesandinordertoprovideabetterfitwithGRIaspects(e.g.transparencyandpublicpolicyengagementhavebeengroupedintoethicalbehaviour,restructuringintoethicalbehaviourandemployeeengagementandcapitalleverageintofinancialperformance,andrisktotheeconomy).

In2014,wefollowedtheGRIG4materialityprocessasdescribedintheG4SustainabilityReportingGuidelines.

2.1. Identification of material relevant topicsOverthepasttwoyears,Barclaysconductedseveralengagementsessionswithexternalstakeholders.TheaimwastoinspiretheCitizenshipStrategypost-2015.SeeG4-24toG4-27formoredetailsonstakeholderidentification,engagementandinclusiveness.

Additionally,weusedpublicallyavailableinformationtoinspirerelevanttopics.ThisincludestheSustainabilityAccountingStandardsBoard(SASB)financialissuestable,theGRItable,aswellasavailablematerialityanalysisofourpeers.

During2014aninternalworkshopwasorganisedinordertobringtogetherandprioritiseallpreviousfindings.Itinvolvedrepresentativesfromdifferentpartsofthebusiness,chosenfortheirspecialisedknowledgeofdifferentstakeholdergroups(includingGroupStrategy,InvestorRelations,HR,InsightsandResearch,Citizenship,ReputationRiskandEnvironmentalRisk).Specialattentionwasalsotakentoachieverepresentationofasmanybusinessunitsandgeographicalareasaspossible,suchasAfricaBanking,thePersonalandCorporateBank,etc.Thisworkresultedintheinitialidentificationof23relevanttopics(seesectionbelowfordetails),whichthenunderwentaprioritisationprocess.

TheaffordablehousingbusinessunitinSouthAfrica(MyHome)addressesthehousingchallengesfacedbyconsumerswhoearnlessthanR18,600permonthinsupportoftheSouthAfricangovernmentagendaonprovidingaffordablehousingtopeople.In2014,weprovided4,566customerswithhomeloanfinanceatatotalvalueofR1,490m.

Throughourcommunityinvestmentinitiativeswehavecollaboratedwithcivilsocietyorganisationstodeliverprogrammesinalleviatingpovertyinthelivesofyoungpeople.In2014,weextendedourpartnershipwiththeGrameenFoundationtodevelopanewretailpropositionaimedatengagingVillageSavingsandLendingGroupsinformalfinancialservices.Wealsocollaboratewithcorporateclientstotestnewfinancingmodelsaimedatsupportingthedevelopmentandgrowthofsmallholderfarmers.

Wehavesupportedthetransitiontocleanerenergybyprovidingdebtfundingsupportto12projectsannouncedforroundthreeoftheSouthAfricangovernment’sRenewableEnergyIndependentPowerProducerProcurementProgramme.Theseprojectsincludewind,solarphotovoltaic(PV)andconcentratedsolarpower.Theyhavebeendesignedtobenefitlocalcommunitiesandwillimpactmanybusinessesduringthevariousconstructionphases.Uptothethirdbiddinground,theBankhasbeeninvolvedinfinancingfor1,598MWofrenewableenergyprojectsincluding456MWforsolarPV,892MWforwindand250MWforconcentratedsolartechnologies.Thisrepresentsc.41%ofallrenewableenergyprojects(byMWs)awardedduringtheprogrammesofar.Inaddition,theBankalsosupported28projectsduringthefourthbiddingroundoftheprogramme,withwinningbiddersexpectedtobeannouncedduringthefirstquarterof2015.

TheSouthAfricanWindEnergyassociation,inconjunctionwiththeGlobalWindEnergyAssociation,recognisedourSouthAfricanoperationforitssignificantcontributionmadetothewindindustrybyawardingitthetitleof‘outstandinglender’.Wehavebeenoneofthemostsuccessfulbanksinfinancingthisspecificrenewableenergytechnologythroughourinvolvementinarrangingfinancingfor892MWsofwindenergyprojectsupthelatestroundofdealsawardedinthemarket(c.45%ofallwindenergydealsawardedbyMW).
