Top 10 Fundraising Ideas

The best fundraising ideas are simple and, above all, allow you to give your donors something in return for their generosity. Now, that may be some kind of prize or simply something they buy from you – like a cake! They might also get the chance to enjoy themselves for a few hours, or to feel moved, amused or inspired by you and the work of Helping Hands Cambodia. Whatever you decide to do, communicating your event is really important so make sure you email your friends and family, use social media and even start a blog if you are fund-raising over a period of time. If you can make your social media and blog posts funny or moving, people will respond even more positively to your great work. And don’t forget to include links to your online donation page. Here are ten simple ideas for you to consider. Good luck!

1. Ask for an alternative gift. Got a big birthday or anniversary coming up soon? Don’t know what you want for Christmas? Do friends ignore you when you say you really don’t need anything for your birthday? Why not ask for donations to Helping Hands instead? Set up an online donation page and email it to anyone who asks what you want for your birthday!

2. Do something sponsored. A walk, run, swim, triathlon, or even three-legged race! Add fancy dress to make it even more fun. You could ask friends and family to join you and maybe finish with a party – the more the merrier! And don’t forget to ask for sponsors… 3. Hold a theme party. Invite your friends to a themed party. Maybe a Cambodia-style party with traditional food and drink – there’s a lot you can do with rice and noodles. Charge a reasonable fee which you can donate to Helping Hands. You could even do a short talk about Helping Hands with some photos! 4. Host a frugal lunch or dinner – invite friends to a simple lunch or dinner – you could have a Cambodian theme – noodles and stir-fry for example. Charge a reasonable fee and all the profits go to charity. 5. Host a Big Night In! Save money by not going out on the town and invite friends to yours for beer, wine and snacks. Provide some music, tell them all about Helping Hands and ask for people to donate what they think they saved by having a night in! 6. Give a talk about Helping Hands. Arrange a talk, slide and video show at your work, school, church or other community group and ask for donations at the end! 7. Hold a quiz or bingo night. Ask your work, school, church or other community group to host a quiz or bingo night with an entry fee and prize for winners. 8. Hold a fancy-dress party. Invite friends or ask your community group to hold to a themed fancy-dress party. Add music and a few drinks, charge an entry fee and reward the best costume with a prize! 9. Hold a raffle. Boost donations at big social events by holding a raffle. Ask local businesses and friends for prize donations and sell tickets on the night. 10. Sell something. Be it cakes, crafts, or unwanted furniture. Sell on e-bay, at school, uni or work, on your drive or from your garage. As they say – there’s a buyer for everything!

How to Set Up Your Own Personalized Fundraising Page for the Mega Raffle

If you are doing any kind of fundraising activity, setting up your own online fundraising page is often the easiest way for people to support your efforts and donate to Helping Hands Cambodia. Here are two of the best online fundraising sites we know. They are all set up to make donating to Helping Hands really easy and they also allow your supporters to make tax deductible or tax efficient donations. For US Residents: Our parent charity Globalteer is a partner project of award-winning online giving platform Global Giving, which means that you can set up a Helping Hands Cambodia fundraising page where US resident supporters can make secure tax-deductible donations online.

1. Go to www.globalgiving.org/20653, scroll down until you see a green rectangle on the right hand side which says “Help raise money!” and click on the “Start a Fundraiser” button.

2. Enter your Fundraiser details: Give the fundraiser a title, enter your name, type up a small description of what you are doing, and set a fundraising goal.

3. For the fundraiser photo we suggest using a picture of yourself so that people know they are on the right page, or a close-up picture of the project if you have one.

4. We also suggest that you check the “share your contact information with non-profit partners” box (which means Globalteer) so that we know you have started your page.

5. Send us a separate e-mail at [email protected] to let us know you have started a fundraiser for the Mega Raffle. This will ensure that we make sure the funds get sent to Helping Hands Cambodia and all of your donors will receive their entry tickets.

Now submit your fundraising page. Once it is approved you will be sent a URL to share with friends. For UK Residents: If you and most of your donors live in the UK, then Virgin Money Giving is the best site to use for your fundraising page, as it allows donors to increase the value of their donation by up to 25% through GiftAid. Here’s how to set up your page through our parent charity Globalteer:

1. Go to http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/giving/ and click on 'Start fundraising’ on the right hand side.

2. Register with Virgin Money Giving using your e-mail address or Facebook page. 3. Answer a couple of questions about your fundraising activity and click “next.”

Page 7: Helping Hands Cambodia Fundraising Pack€¦ · Fundraising Pack Contents 1. Top 10 fundraising ideas To get you started, we’ve put together a list of ten top fundraising ideas.

4. In the “Search for a charity” section, search for and select “Globalteer.” 5. Now you can create and edit your page. Make sure the title of your page includes the words

“Helping Hands Cambodia.” 6. In the “Share your story” section, talk about what you are doing and why you are supporting

Helping Hands. You should upload a picture of yourself or of Helping Hands too. If you would like a photo form us, please let us know.

7. Set a fundraising target to encourage more donations. 8. At the bottom of this page you will be asked if you want to send a thank you message to your

donors – we say yes! Just compose a short thank you which will be automatically sent out every time someone donates.

9. Be sure to e-mail us at [email protected] to let us know you have set up the page for the Mega Raffle and what it is called. This will ensure that we make sure the funds get sent to Helping Hands Cambodia and all of your donors will receive their entry tickets.

Share the link to your fundraising page with your friends, family, and on social media!

For the rest of the world: If you are collecting donations or staging a fund raiser in a country other than the USA or the UK you can use either of the above to set up a fund raising page. However, at the moment your donors will not be able to take advantage of any tax breaks, and unfortunately donations have to be made in either US$ or £. You can also set up a personal fundraising page on a platform in your home country and have the funds sent to yourself, on sites where this is permissable, or collect cash. You can then submit them via the Mega Raffle Donation Page. Donations here can be securely online in any currency, using your credit or debit card or PayPal. Just go to https://www.globalteer.org/donations/mega-raffle/ and follow the instructions – make sure you indicate in the message section that you would like your donations to go to Helping Hands Cambodia! Be sure to send us a list of names, e-mails, and donation amounts of your donors to ensure that they will receive their entry tickets for the raffle. Or You can simply ask your donors to donate directly using the Mega Raffle Donation Page. From this donation page, just ask them to leave a note in the comments section of their donation, stating your name and your fundraising activity so that we know to associate their donation with your personal efforts.

Helping Hands Cambodia Overview

Helping Hands is a Cambodia registered NGO in the rural village of Prasat Char, 25km from Siem Reap, Cambodia.

The Challenge:

Helping Hands is a community project in one of the poorest regions of Cambodia. Villagers live in extreme poverty, children are often malnourished, poorly educated and can suffer debilitating or chronic health problems. Some children have to cycle 2 hours to get to state school - attendance and graduation rates are among the lowest in the

world. Helping Hands has been changing that since 2005. Helping Hands works with the community to provide long term solutions to the

problems caused by poverty and we have already had a significant impact on the lives and futures of the villagers. Former students have secured jobs in a variety of

professions from medicine and accounting, to sales and hospitality. They’ve followed their dreams and can now support themselves and their families.

Objectives:

To improve future prospects of our community through a strategy of holistic education and emergency support.

Core Activities:

Helping Hands takes a holistic approach, we aim to touch every aspect of our students lives with three main areas of focus: Education, Health Care and Nutrition, and Social Care. We provide free supplementary education to support the students state school

studies, and teach Khmer, English, Maths, Sports, Music, Arts and Crafts, and Health and Hygiene. We also grow fruit, vegetables and herbs on-site which are used to make

nutritious breakfasts for the students each morning. Health and Social care is provided, and we run a University Scholarship Programme to encourage our students to pursue

further education, and follow their dreams. Helping Hands is managed by UK charity Globalteer and employs Cambodian staff.

Funding needs:

Helping Hands relies on funding from donations and grants to meet all our running costs. This includes teaching materials, utility bills and of course the salaries of our local

Khmer teachers and staff.

Dear ,

My name is [insert name] and [insert how you know the addressee or what it is that made you contact

them].

I have just returned from an inspirational volunteering trip to Cambodia where I volunteered as a

classroom assistant and general helper at Helping Hands, a community project for 300 disadvantaged

children and 70 families in the rural village of Prasat Char near Siem Reap.

The project was founded in 2005, is managed by UK charity Globalteer and employs local Cambodian

staff. It provides a kindergarten, free supplementary education for older children to enable them to

complete their state school studies and university, and vocational training scholarships. It also

provides training in health and hygiene, nutrition and agriculture. Helping Hands aims to help the

children of the village realise their full potential and give the whole community hope of a better future

for themselves and their families.

I would love to come and give a talk, short slideshow and video about Helping Hands and my time

volunteering there to you [and your club, your school, class, etc]. I can also answer questions anyone

may have about volunteering at the project and about how people can help my fund raising efforts for

the children.

You can find more information about Helping Hands Cambodia at www.globalteer.org/helpinghands
